Chicago breaks surprising 146-year-old weather record

Chicago isn't exactly known for having mild, snowless winters. The city is prone to frequent Arctic outbreaks with temperatures plunging below zero Fahrenheit, along with frequent light snowfalls and occasional blizzards.

This year, however, the weather pattern across the U.S. brought a historic reprieve to the most winter-weary Chicago residents. For the first time in 146 years of record-keeping, there was no snow on the ground on any day during January and February.

The snowless streak was punctuated by frequent bouts of record warm weather, with numerous daily and monthly records toppling during February in particular. Read more...

Pinterest doubles down on AI because 'most of Pinterest hasn’t been built yet'

When you think of artificial inteligence, Pinterest is likely not the first tech giant that comes to mind.

The company is hoping that will soon change. Pinterest is launching a new group within its organization dedicated to machine learning and AI research. Pinterest Labs, which will be run by the company's chief scientist, Jure Leskovec.

"Labs brings together top researchers, scientists, and engineers to work on image recognition, user modeling, recommender systems, and big data analytics," Leskovec writes in a post on Pinterest's blog.  Read more...

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick tells driver 'bullsh*t' in response to query about price dropping

Stop the presses: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is kind of an asshole. This isn't news to either his own employees internally, or to his contractors, those who currently drive his whole operation, helping him bolster his company up to be one of the most valuable startups in the world.

But the latest piece of evidence is pretty damning: A video obtained and transcribed by Bloomberg, where Kalanick argues with his Uber driver.

When the driver, Fawzi Kamel, asked Kalanick about the price dropping on Uber, the CEO replied, "Bullshit."

“We started with $20," Kamel responded. Read more...

Having trouble online today? Blame Amazon.

The internet got a sucker punch on Tuesday. And no, it wasn't another DDoS attack

This time instead of hackers, it was Amazon. The tech giant that ships every product imaginable around the world in two days also quietly runs what seems like half the internet. And on Tuesday afternoon, Amazon Web Services went down.

Amazon Web Services is a cloud-computing service that offers networking and content delivery, cloud storage, security services and the technology behind the Internet of Things. High-profile companies and websites — Snapchat, Netflix, Intuit — all pay for and rely on AWS to run.  Read more...

Prince Charles and Princess Diana will be Ryan Murphy's next 'Feud'

If you think actresses are scary, wait until you see royalty.

Ryan Murphy's much-anticipated Feud hasn't even premiered yet, but the show is delicious enough that FX has already ordered Season 2 — and it will center around a relationship that still fascinates us to this day: The ill-fated marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

The couple's "wedding of the century" took place in 1981, but they separated in 1992 and were divorced in 1996, following years of apparent misery together and affairs on both sides. Diana died in a car crash in 1997 and Charles later married his mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles, in 2005. Read more...

Warren Buffett: 'If a lady says no, she means maybe'

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett made an analogy about business on Monday that was not great.

In an interview about Kraft Heinz's proposed — and rejected — acquisition of the consumer goods company Unilever, Buffett turned to a misogynist tale as old as time.

"It reminds me of that old story about the difference between a diplomat and a lady. I don't know whether you've ever heard that or not," the Berkshire Hathaway executive asked CNBC's Becky QuickBusiness Insider spotted the problematic comment.

"Well, if a diplomat says yes, he means maybe. If he says maybe, he means no. And if he says no, he's no diplomat," Buffett continued. "And if a lady says no, she means maybe. And if she says maybe, she means yes. And if she says yes, she's no lady. So he [Kraft Heinz chairman Alex Behring] probably got a maybe [from Unilever] and didn't know whether it was coming from a diplomat or a lady, essentially."  Read more...

Mahershala Ali used to be a rapper and of course he's very good

In wonderfully predictable news: Mahershala Ali is good at everything.

The Oscar-winning actor has hit a superstar stride in 2017, crushing roles in Hidden Figures, Marvel's Luke Cage series and, of course, Moonlight.

Before all of his on-screen success and Calvin Klein campaigns, the Academy Award winner tried his hand at something a little different: rap.

After earning his masters degree in acting from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, the actor began rapping under the name Prince Ali.

"Bay Area rhymesayer Prince Ali's verbal assault combines a flaunting, B-boy-like swagger with nuances of spirituality, a strong implication of his Souls of Mischief Influence," his iTunes artist biography reads. Read more...

Get ready to see less #ad and #spon on Instagram

Instagram appears to be gearing up to bring a dose of transparency to what its users are promoting. A new tool, spotted this week but not yet widely available, would let advertisers tag a partner in Instagram posts.

The tagging system is featured below the "Tag People" option on Instagram and seemingly lets advertisers name a partner. The functionality comes after years of advertising watchdogs and lobbying groups being frustrated about the lack of a clear policy or rules for so-called branded content on the app.

Moshe Isaacian, a creative marketing strategist from Los Angeles, spotted the feature earlier this week. Read more...

Trump's absurd statement on health care gets trolled because how could it not?

As the great Avril Lavigne once sang, "Why'd you have to go and make health care so complicated?"

Well, okay. That's not exactly what she said, but if she were to release her hit angsty 2002 anthem, "Complicated," today about the laughable health care statement Donald Trump made on Monday, those would probably be the lyrics.

Why the internet was so screwed up today

Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3, the cloud computing service that backs many major sites and services, including Netflix, Airbnb, Giphy and 148,213 other sites, suffered a disruption on Tuesday, bringing large parts of the internet to a grinding halt.

Many of Mashable's AWS-backed systems, including Slack, Trello and our internal CMS slowed or became unresponsive shortly after 1 p.m. ET, confirming the disruption.

While the cause of the outage still hasn't been confirmed, Amazon acknowledged the problems on the AWS Twitter account and promised anxious users it was hard at work on a fix.

For S3, we believe we understand root cause and are working hard at repairing. Future updates across all services will be on dashboard.

New smart holster automatically makes police body cams record when guns are drawn

A new smart holster design could make police body cameras more responsive in the moments they're needed most: when an officer draws their firearm.

TASER, the company behind the stun guns used by law enforcement officers around the world, recently introduced the Axon Signal Sidearm. It's a small wireless sensor that detects when a weapon is removed from its holster and immediately initiates recording on connected cameras in a 30-foot range.

The Sidearm, which the company says is compatible with most firearm holsters, is the latest smart device in the Axon Signal line. The tech allows police officers to go about their business without  manually activating their body cams, since actions like turning on a patrol car's light bar, opening car doors or charging a TASER battery automatically trigger the recording function. In an ironic twist, a 1991 Shell ad contains a warning about climate change

The U.S. president might doubt the reality of human-driven climate change, but you know who doesn't? Major oil companies. In fact, they've known the reality of the problem for decades.

Take Royal Dutch Shell, for instance.

In 1991, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant produced a film, called "Climate of Concern," that warns of potentially catastrophic risks from burning the very oil and gas that companies like Shell produce.

Its narrator speaks of a "new sense of urgency" driven by the "realization that our energy-consuming way of life may be causing climatic changes, with adverse consequences for us all" — like famine, flooding, waves of climate refugees and extreme weather.  Read more...

Predator drones will no longer rain hellfire missiles from the sky

Predator drones will no longer haunt the sky above parts of the Middle East and Africa, though another type of drone will take their place.

MQ-1 predators and other military drones have launched hellfire missiles in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and other nations. The predator's been around for more than two decades.

The reaper drones that will take its place are faster, have better sensors and can carry more explosive power, according to the Defense Department. Reapers have been used in tandem with predators for a decade, but next year predators will give way to their more advanced counterparts entirely, allowing the military to eliminate training costs for the lesser of the two types of drones. Can a podcast actually save America? Three former Obama staffers think so

Your name could shape your face, new study suggests

Long before anyone knows what we'll really look like, we're given the label we will probably carry for the rest of our lives — our name. But what if your appearance, particularly your face, somehow reflected the name you were given at birth?

A new study suggests that each person's face, insanely enough, could actually be shaped by his or her name.

So that would mean, yes, that Sarah really does look like a Sarah, and that Fred really does look like a Fred. Supreme Court weighs a constitutional right to social media access

Does everyone have the legal right to access social media, regardless of past sins?

The Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday on the constitutionality of a North Carolina law barring convicted sex offenders from accessing social media platforms also used by children. Lawyers advocating on behalf of one such offender, Lester Packingham, argued to the court that Facebook is so integral to everyday life that depriving an individual of access violates his or her First Amendment rights.

That's right: We're at a point where Facebook access may soon be considered a fundamental right.

Terms of the deal have not been announced, but multiple reports citing sources in the publishing industry said the bidding process had reached tens of millions of dollars. One report by the Financial Times put the number north of $60 million.   Read more...

Some poor soul broke an $800,000 sculpture while trying to take a selfie

Sometimes, art begets art. And sometimes, it destroys it.

Case in point: just days after Yayoi Kusama's immersive Infinity Mirrors debuted at Washington D.C.'s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a visitor crushed one of her signature pumpkins while trying to take a selfie.

A pumpkin similar to the broken pumpkin. RIP, pumpkin.

Image: Mathis Wienand/Getty Images

According to Artnet, a similar pumpkin sold at auction for nearly $800,000 in 2015. So this was a pretty expensive goof.

The room containing the smashed pumpkin — which has attracted legions of selfie-takers since it opened — shut down following the incident, but fret not, pumpkin-lovers: it will reopen soon in all its Instagram-friendly glory. Read more...

What to do when internet outages ruin your cool smart home

Your lights automatically flipping on when you walk in the door. Checking who's at the front door without getting up off the couch. Starting your coffee before you get out of bed.

There's a reason the smart home industry is forecasted to become a multibillion-dollar industry over the next several years. Sheer convenience aside, smart home gadgets make us feel like we're living in the future. Until they don't.

Amazon's lengthy AWS outage Tuesday was a stark reminder of just how much farther we have to go to realize the seamless Jetsons-esque future gadget-makers so desperately want us to buy into. The hours-long disruption took down much of the internet, crippling day-to-day activities for many who rely on AWS-backed services, like Slack and Trello, to do their jobs. Read more...

Basically everyone reuses their passwords

Every once in a while I have to log into a website I haven't been to in, say, a year. I type in my username and password, hit enter, and the internet yells at me.

Wrong password. OK, I say, and type another variation of the password.

I tell myself, "This time I'll use a an exclamation point instead of an 'I,'" sure that this could be the only other option.

Wrong again, so I go back to typing my original guess, thinking maybe I'd misspelled it the first time, but no, I'm wrong, and now my fingers are flying across the keyboard until the internet has yelled at me so many times that I have to create a new password and answer a bunch of questions to prove I'm not some imposter hacker trying to steal my own LinkedIn info.  Read more...

Watch Netflix's first look at Joon Ho Bong's new monster movie 'Okja'

Tilda Swinton's line "I took nature and science, and synthesised," is simple enough, but in the first teaser to director Joon Ho Bong's upcoming Netflix film, Okja, it carries a lot of meaning.

The follow up to Snowpiercer, Bong's new movie explores the liminal state between animal and man.

The film co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and Lily Collins. It's central character, however, is Mija — a young girl who seeks to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her friend.

Her friend happens to be a massive "synthenised" beast called named Okja, that kind of looks like a pig-ish, elephant-skinned creature with very human eyes.  Read more...

Thirsting for the new Nokia 3310? Just make sure it works where you live

Nostalgia is cheap, but it gets us every damn time.

Nokia's reboot of the classic 3310 sent people in an unprecedented fervour when it debuted at Mobile World Congress on the weekend. Turns out people want durable dumbphones that'll last longer than a year. Even if they don't offer much except for Snake.

The bad news though is that it might not even work: The Nokia 3310 relies on 2.5G connectivity, which requires 2G networks.

Depending on where you live, your local 2G network may be decommissioned at some point in the future, or already has beenAustralia's phasing it out as we speak, with Telstra having decommissioned its 2G network in 2016 and Optus' switch-off set for April 2017. Read more...

A python eating a possum upside down in a tree is the most horrifying thing you'll see all day

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Everything in Australia is trying to kill you.

While that might be a little OTT, there's nothing like coming across a huge snake devouring a possum to put the fear of nature back into you.

According to Ten News, tourist sisters Simone and Michelle Hunjak came across the carpet python, dangling upside down in a tree, in Byron Bay. Fighting against the laws of physics, the snake was attempting to swallow a ringtail possum whole while it "hung out." Creepy.

Congresswomen in white troll Trump to his face during joint address

The Democratic women of Congress dressed up for Donald Trump's first address Tuesday night, but it was to make a strong statement.

Dozens dressed in white and filled the rows of seats right in Trump's line of vision to call out for women's rights.

Their color choice dates back to the suffragettes of the early 1900s, who were known for wearing white while campaigning to bring voting rights to women.

Fireball video provokes UFO debate because we're desperate for aliens

We should know better by now. We've said it before: It's not aliens. It's never aliens. Stop saying it's aliens.

In fact, sometimes the most spectacular-looking "UFOs" in our skies are actually pretty mundane.

On Tuesday, Lee-Anne Peters rose just before sunrise in Hobart, Tasmania. She was making cupcakes for her daughter's birthday when she "noticed this strange thing in the sky." She thought it was a plane at first, but her daughter speculated that it looked more like a meteor thanks to its fiery tail. "It was definitely quite an exciting start to the day," she said. Hyperloop One begins initial talks with the Indian government

Hyperloop One's high-speed transportation solution could reach India in the near future. That's the plan, at least.

Hyperloop One executives, including CEO Rob Lloyd and chief chairman Shervin Pishevar spent three hours in a room packed of Indian government officials and journalists on Tuesday. That's how keen they are to bring Elon Musk's idea to the country.

Although at the first sight, they don't look as the perfect match (India is known for its archaic regulations, over-crowded roads and poorly-designed urban areas), the two have begun talking.

At the event, India's railway minister, Suresh Prabhu, said the government is open to further discussions and definitely sees the need for Hyperloop One's high-speed trains. "Though we are not hyper about it," she joked. Read more...

One more gaffe for India's national airline and people can't stop rubbing it in

Fault in the stars? Or perhaps in the skies?

Because nothing seems to be going right for India's national airline, Air India. First, it was pilloried for choosing to reserve seats for women. Then, a London hotel shamed its cabin crew for taking away buffet food in lunchboxes. And now, this.

Two of Air India's engineers forgot a basic step thus forcing an aircraft to make an emergency landing, the Press Trust of India reported

A Delhi-Cochin flight which took off from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport early Monday morning had to be grounded forcibly within 40 minutes because the engineers had “forgotten” to remove pins from the landing gear, thus making it impossible for the pilot to retract the aircraft's wheels.   Read more...

Emma Watson is no stranger to celebrity. The actress has been in the public eye ever since she scored the role of Hermione Granger at age 10. While the spotlight has given the actress more roles and a social justice platform, it has also made her more vulnerable.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Watson revealed why she opts out of selfies with fans — it's a matter of being tracked.

"For me, it's the difference between being able to have a life and not," she said. "If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they've created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters. They can see what I'm wearing and who I'm with. How do you get women to try organic tampons? Give them out at Equinox

Starting Wednesday, every Equinox member will find tampons from Lola in their gym's women's bathrooms.

That's a big deal for Lola. The organic tampon subscription service and wholesaler was one of the first high-profile women's health companies to make a splash in Silicon Valley (or Silicon Alley, since Lola is based in New York). Since 2015, Lola has raised $11.2 million in funding from investors including Spark Capital, Trump in-law Josh Kushner, Lena Dunham and Allison Williams.

But since Lola's launch, the buzz around wholesale or subscription models for women's health tech startups has started to fade. Lola makes tampons and pads out of organic cotton and sends them directly to consumers via a subscription model. But there's also Cora, which launched after Lola with a similar idea, and Flex, which is trying to get women to switch to a disposable menstrual disc. Read more...

When was the last time you did pull-ups for fun, let alone on your birthday?

Well, 90-year-old Vern from Florida recently put us all to shame when his son recorded him doing pull-ups on his birthday. According to his son, the two regularly go to the gym together to work out despite Vern's old elbow injuries.

"We go to the gym regularly and he loves to do pull-ups," Vern's son writes in the YouTube caption. "I think he does pretty good considering he broke both elbows as a kid."

Just look at what Vern can do in cargo pants and sandals. Most millennials don't even know how to stand up straight, let alone do a pull-up. Read more...

Uber driver explains why he argued with CEO Travis Kalanick

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick's very own Uber driver has spoken out about that incriminating video, and things are not looking good.

The ride-sharing company has been under fire the past few weeks for a myriad of reasons ranging from sexual harassment allegations to a beef with Google and controversial Trump-related remarks, but things got even heavier on Tuesday when a damning video of CEO Travis Kalanick being an asshole to his own Uber driver was released.

The dash-cam footage shows Kalanick and his black Uber driver, Fawzi Kamel, arguing over price hikes at the end of a trip on Feb. 5. Kamel hit the Uber CEO up about problems in the pricing structure, when Kalanick responded by yelling: "Some people don't like to take responsibility for their own shit. They blame everything in their life on somebody else. Good luck!" Read more...

Partnering with Tumblr, the campaign is calling for and sharing 30- to 60-second videos of people declaring their support for transgender rights.

The initiative recently launched with videos from lawmakers and activists, while big names and people around the country will join the campaign soon. Read more...

What one video game developer organization is doing to combat Trump’s immigration ban

The International Game Developers Association was one of the first in the games industry to speak out against Trump's immigration ban. It's no surprise they've taken their protest of the ban a step further to actually help developers in the seven affected countries get visas to come work in the US.

The IGDA will be offering free memberships to developers in the seven countries — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Syria — which, in addition to a host of other benefits, grants members easier access to visas to come work in the USMembership fees usually range from $25 a year for an unemployed developer to $48 a year. CNN is Sean Spicer's enemy except for when it's reporting good things about Trump

News is fake until it's good and then it's real and we will talk about it.

Cool?

You may know that the current White House administration is no fan of CNN. President Donald Trump has called their journalism "fake news" more than once. Press Secretary Sean Spicer has, among other things, railed against CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta. CNN (as well as other outlets) was also kept out of a press briefing held in his office.

But then CNN said Trump's joint address to Congress on Wednesday got good reviews from viewers, and now CNN is chill. Read more...

9 things from Mobile World Congress you should be excited about

Yes, there was no Samsung Galaxy S8 and yes, its absence was felt. But even without it, Mobile World Congress — the largest mobile show of the year — was anything but boring.

This year, everyone's crazy for retro phones. LG slapped competitors in the face with a surprisingly solid flagship. A futuristic-looking, hyperconnected car debuted at MWC instead of at the Geneva Motor Show. And there were just enough weird gadgets for us to geek out over while we sped through the Fira Gran Via's sprawling convention center halls.

I tried a self-driving car in London and lived to tell the tale

Just a few metres into my journey in Nissan's LEAF electric car, the autonomous vehicle swerved towards the kerb.

It wasn't exactly the start I was expecting.

But to be fair to Nissan, my driving companion, Tetsuya Iijima, Nissan's Manager of Autonomous Drive Technology, quickly placed his hands on the steering wheel and took over the car instantaneously.

It was a minor glitch due to a disconnected wire with the computer in the car's boot. If anything it showed how swiftly the driver can override the vehicle and Nissan immediately provided another LEAF car, modified for self-driving.  Read more...

'Beauty and the Beast' director reveals Disney's first openly gay character

Beauty and the Beast could make major strides in representation when it hits theaters in a few weeks, with one of the first known LGBTQ characters in a Disney princess film.

In an exclusive with Attitude magazine, director Bill Condon revealed that Le Fou (Josh Gad) is coming to terms with his sexuality and that the internal struggle has a payoff.

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” Condon said in the interview.

“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings," he added. "And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.” Read more...

This isn't a Nintendo Switch review, but it'll help you decide about buying one

Nintendo Switch is, at this point, a Zelda machine.

Let's be clear: the new hybrid console — out on March 3 — is brimming with potential. It lacks the power of a current generation PlayStation or Xbox, but its ability to seamlessly... er..switch between TV and on-the-go play is a winning touch.

Provided you're a fan of Nintendo games, of course. That's a forever proviso when it comes to Nintendo hardware: if you don't care for Mario or Zelda or (hopefully we'll get one again someday) Metroid, there's not nearly as much to love. Read more...

Scientists are firing lasers at dinosaur fossils, and the result is awesome

Scientists are one step closer to figuring out what dinosaurs actually looked like—and they're doing it by pointing laser beams on dinosaur fossils to show previously unknown features and details, including the actual fleshy outlines of prehistoric creatures.

In a new study, researchers focused the technique on the Anchiornis, a small feathered dinosaur that lived in the late Jurassic period.

Due to the animal's drumstick-shaped legs and bird-like arms, revealed by the lasers, researchers think the Anchiornis might have been able to fly. The discovery offers another link in how modern-day birds may have evolved from their predecessors, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.  Read more...

Alternatives to the pussy hat if you're honestly too embarrassed to wear one

Facebook blocks famous nude artwork and feels the internet's ire

On Tuesday, Facebook decided to block a video advertisement, stating that the ad violated their guidelines around sexual content.

However, the ad was merely for a collection of artwork to be auctioned off and the "sexual content" was actually a piece of artwork.

Mossgreen, the auction house in Australia who's behind the ad, has spoken out against Facebook's ban. Mossgreen's chief executive, Paul Summer, told The Guardian, "I can’t quite believe it, to be honest. I feel I’m not living in the 21st century. It’s like Facebook are living in the 1950s."

Papa John's new pizza fast pass is either evil genius or just genius

Just when you thought pizza was peaceful again, there's drama at the pepperoni slicer.

Papa John's Pizza recently rolled out a new delivery feature, "Papa Priority," at select locations. For a $3 fee, those who need their pizza like, now can force their pie order to the front of the production line. It's effectively a fast pass for pizza. Great? Great! Who doesn't want their pizza as quickly as possible? (We all do.)

But of course there are issues. The fee comes in addition to a delivery fee and tip. Additionally—and probably most importantly—it doesn't actually mean your pizza will go out faster. If your pie is the first one done but all the drivers are still out on other deliveries, it could take just as long as if you were further down the line, leaving you salivating, hungry, and out three more dollars than you would be otherwise. Aka, hangry. Read more...

Elephants only sleep 2 hours a day in the wild, wearables study finds

When you weigh more than 10,000 pounds, you need a lot of food just to survive. All those hours spent searching for grasses, roots and fruits means there's little time left over for sleep.

How little? Try two hours a day for African elephants in the wild, a new study found. If confirmed, that would be the shortest-known sleep time of any land mammal.

These herbivores can also regularly go nearly two days without sleeping at all, according to the paper published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE.

Researchers followed two free-roaming female elephants inside Botswana's Chobe National Park. They outfitted each matriarch with an "actiwatch" — like a Fitbit for elephant trunks — and a collar with a gyroscope to monitor the elephants' sleep times and sleeping positions. Read more...
