This photographer is documenting the resistance — and donating the pictures

David Moriya hasn't had a break from work in weeks.

A freelance photographer with a full plate of scheduled headshots and concerts to shoot, Moriya has recently taken on a new gig: documenting the resistance to President Donald Trump and his administration.

He calls it the Resistance Photography Project, and he's donating his most striking images to nonprofits, free of charge, to use on their websites and social platforms.

Earlier this week, he stayed up until 5 a.m. editing photos from the #NotMyPresidentDay protest in New York City. He took 4,200 photos throughout the course of the Feb. 21 demonstration, but he's struggled to find time to pore over the images between his regularly scheduled shoots. Read more...

Sean Spicer mistakenly announced Donald Trump as the new HUD secretary

On Thursday's installment of "Spice World," White House press secretary Sean Spicer sent out a tweet mistakenly announcing that Donald Trump — the current U.S. president — was confirmed as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Our condolences to Ben Carson.

Image: Twitter/Archive.is

The swiftly-deleted tweet was the latest in a series of Spicer-related technology mishaps, including his extremely public Venmo profile, constant leaks, that time he may have tweeted out his password, his inability to hide his public WHOIS data and his previous gig as the White House Easter Bunny. OK, that last one wasn't a technology mishap, but we had to remind you. Read more...

Firefighters rescue mischievous husky from roof twice in 1 hour

A very good dog did some very bad things, but he's still a very good dog.

The Nanticoke City Fire Department in Pennsylvania responded to a public assist call on Monday after a mischievous husky managed to break free from its prison for some fresh air on the roof. The dog's humans weren't at home but the firefighters were able to get the dog back inside, then they left.

Then it happened again.

"About an hour later, firefighters received another public assist call to same location for the dog on the roof," the page wrote on Facebook. "The dog apparently wanted to be back outside again and reopened the window and let himself out again." Read more...

Fun dad allows family dog to get a very unfortunate haircut

The idea behind taking your dog to a groomer's is that the dog will look better afterwards.

Sometimes, though, the dog ends up looking worse. Ruff life.

This happened to Beau's family dog on Tuesday, when his dad took the dog for an impromptu haircut. It did not go well.

'The future that liberals want' is here, it's now and it's a meme

What is the future that liberals want?

That's the question everyone's asking (and meme-ing) after rando right wing political Twitter account @polNewsNetwork1—what, @polNewsNetwork was already taken?—sent out a tweet trying to criticize liberals on Wednesday:

This is the future that liberals wantpic.twitter.com/QwterpqQbH

The tweet reads "this is the future that liberals want," alongside an image of a man in drag sitting next to a woman in a traditional niqab, a "veil for the face that leaves the area around the eyes clear."

This left a lot of people saying, "yeah... kind of exactly." Read more...

Amazon's fulfillment centers will soon run on solar energy

Our president might not believe in climate change, but Amazon does.

The tech giant on Thursday announced a new commitment to clean energy. Amazon will install solar panels on 15 of its U.S. fulfillment centers this year, and 50 worldwide by 2020.

Amazon's solar panels at centers in California, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada and New Jersey could power up to 80 percent of the energy needed at each fulfillment center.

Amazon has other renewable energy projects in the works, too. The tech company operates wind and solar farms in Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia to power its Amazon Web Services data centers. Smaller rooftops on regular office buildings have also been converted to green energy.  Read more...

Don't be fooled, Snap isn't a 'camera company'

Kudos to Snapchat AKA Snap — it looks like the company has pulled off a successful IPO without a massive technical glitch or the bottom falling out from under it. It's even managed to penetrate the world of "the olds," at least for a day, dominating the conversation on septuagenarian-favored networks like CNBC and Bloomberg.

Just don't call it a camera company.

But that's exactly what Snap called itself when it filed for its IPO last month, doubling down on the description co-founder Evan Spiegel began evangelizing about a year ago. On the surface, it kind of makes sense. Even though Snapchat doesn't really make cameras per se, it specializes in consumer camera technology. It's in the business of offering users innovative ways to create custom images they can share with friends. Read more...

After epic drought, parts of California now have too much snow

Finally. California, which has endured more than five years of epic drought that forced officials to institute unprecedented water use restrictions, now may have too much of a good thing.

A snowpack that in some places is twice the typical amount for this time of year threatens to cause spring flooding, depending on how quickly it melts. This snow continues to be dumped on California, resulting from a parade of relentless drought-busting storms that have lined up across the Pacific like airplanes lining up for take off from JFK Airport during the evening rush. More snow is likely to fall in northern California's mountains this weekend.  Read more...

Amazon reveals the cause of massive AWS outage, and it's really embarrassing

Amazon has finally revealed the cause of the lengthy outage that disrupted service to dozens of internet services for hours — and it's pretty embarrassing.

The cause, according to the company, who posted a very wordy explanation on its website Thursday, was "human error." Which sounds bad enough until you find out exactly what the "human error" was: a typo.

According to Amazon, the trouble began Tuesday morning when an employee, who was conducting routine maintenance, mistakenly entered the wrong command while trying to take "a small number of servers" offline. Instead, that command took down a "a larger set of servers," including those that support two S3 subsystems. (S3 is a data storage service used by a number of web-based services.)  Read more...

Snapchat teaches investor not to underestimate the power of 🍆🍆🍆 pics

A company going public means a lotta people get rich. Today that means the CEOs, executives and early investors in Snap Inc., the company once better known for its association with dick pics than its decision to be a "camera company."

But not everyone was convinced in the power of dick pics. Chris Sacca, outspoken Silicon Valley venture capitalist, has invested early in other successful tech business like Instagram, Kickstarter, Twitter and Uber, but he didn't buy into Snapchat — even when they came knocking.

On Thursday, shortly before Snap's first day on the market ended, Sacca shared, on Twitter, an email he had received from Snapchat cofounder and CTO Bobby Murphy from Nov. 2, 2012.  Read more...

This drone photo shows how much damage was done to a Jewish cemetery

Perspective sometimes requires taking a step back.

The FBI is trying to figure out who recently knocked down more than 100 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia. This followed an incident in St. Louis, Missouri, in which vandals damaged 200 headstones  at a Jewish cemetery. This week, a Jewish cemetery in Rochester suffered a similar fate

Damage can be hard to visualize in numbers or as a series of incidents, but photojournalist Charles Mostoller brought a different perspective to the vandalism in Philadelphia when he sent his drone into the sky above the cemetery.  Read more...

50 million people now pay for Spotify

Spotify should hit play on a celebratory playlist today.

Those huge numbers haven't necessarily led to profit. The most recently available report shows the company lost a whopping $194 million in 2015 despite a growing subscription base.   Read more...

Peter Thiel's surveillance company reportedly ready to help Trump's deportation operation

Peter Thiel's surveillance company Palantir is reportedly finalizing the digital framework for a potential mass deportation operation, should President Donald Trump decide to go that route.

The company is putting the last touches on an intelligence database called Investigative Case Management (ICM), according to The Intercept. The system won't be polished until September, but it's already used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency known for carrying out deportations.

Palantir is cofounded by Thiel, who has become Trump's go-to man for all things technology. The company apparently has a $41 million contract to construct and keep up the Investigative Case Management system, which has been deemed so vital to ICE that The Intercept reports the agency doesn't believe it can work without it.  Read more...

This is what a spacecraft sees during a solar eclipse

An eclipse is an incredible thing to see from Earth, but it's even more epic from space.

A new video taken by the European Space Agency's Proba-2 spacecraft on Feb. 26 shows a solar eclipse through the mechanical eyes of the probe, tasked with staring at the sun day in and day out.

The eclipse made the sun resemble a "ring of fire" from South America and Africa on Earth. This type of eclipse — called an annular eclipse — occurs when the moon is centered on the sun but doesn't totally blot out the light of the star, which happens during a total eclipse. Read more...

No, wearables aren't dead, although Fitbit could use a boost

With the downfall of Pebble late last year, it looked like the wearables market could be in trouble.

Nope. It hit an all-time high with 33.9 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2016, growing 16.9 percent year over year, according to the latest data from analytics firm IDC.

The report revealed the diverging paths of two of the most recognizable names in the game: Fitbit and Apple.

Fitbit held onto its perch atop the wearables food chain, but it's slipping. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch had its most successful showing since entering the space in April 2015. It's a big reversal from Apple's decline in Q3 2016 — and it shows the wearables market could be in the midst of another shift.     Read more...

High school basketball team loses game in worst way possible

Welp, March Madness has finally arrived.

Arlington High School played Central Christian Academy on Tuesday night (OK, so it was technically February) in an Indiana state tournament.

With 0.5 seconds left to go, Arlington had a one point lead with still a free throw to shoot. So they basically had the game in the bag.

But that's when a crucial error occurred. Arlington decided to intentionally miss the second free throw, and....

That suuuuuuuuuuucks.

And here's a second angle just for good measure:

The decision to intentionally miss the second free throw is a common one in basketball. This strategy doesn't give the opposing team enough to time to run an inbound play, so by intentionally missing, Arlington was basically forcing Central Christian Academy to try a full-court catch-and-heave. Rarely does this work for the unfortunate team doing the heaving.  Read more...

Made of 156 parts, it has two separate titanium tanks (so you can enjoy two whisky varieties), a stainless steel mouthpiece that makes it easy to switch between those tanks, deployable winglets that create a stand for the flask as well as cask indicators that remind you what you're currently drinking.  Read more...

The starfish have spoken, and they hate your stupid microchips

How cool are starfish? They have no brain, they can regenerate, and when you flip them upside down they're like, "Screw this, I'm flippin' myself back over!" But turns out they also really, really like their privacy.

A recent study in the journal of the National Centre for Biotechnology Information found that starfish have a pretty cool way to avoid microchip tags.

When Danish biology students Frederik Christensen and Trine Olson tried implanting the asterias rubens (common starfish) with microchips, they found the creatures would simply draw them through their bodies internally before "spitting" them out from their arms. Outrageous.  Read more...

You like piñatas. You like cakes.

Now you can have them together in a Sydney creator's smash cakes, which are both edible and designed for those with an appetite for destruction.

Like a piñata, inside each of her smash cakes is an assortment of candy that'll spill out when you crack open the chocolate shell.

You can get them on Claudia Abrahams' SydneySmashCakes, and videos of them getting wrecked on Instagram have been quite the hit — and fair enough.

Lenovo rides the nostalgia wave, promises to bring back Motorola name

Well, hello Motorola.

After being unceremoniously killed by its Chinese owner Lenovo in 2016, the Motorola brand name might be coming back.

This is according to Cnet, which spoke to Motorola Chairman and President Aymar de Lencquesaing on Sunday.

According to de Lencquesaing, the brand name will return because Lenovo now has "clarity on how we present ourselves."

We suspect, however, that it might have something to do with the buzz generated by BlackBerry and Nokia, both of which have successfully played the nostalgia card at the Mobile World Congress this year Read more...

The robots studying the Fukushima nuclear waste site keep failing

The robots sent in to investigate the nuclear fallout at Fukushima just aren't good enough.

Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) head of decommissioning admitted on Thursday that more creativity was needed in developing its robots sent to the reactive zone.

The Fukushima nuclear power plant was massively damaged in 2011, when three of the six nuclear reactors suffered meltdown after being struck by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and associated tsunami waves.

More than 100,000 residents of the nearby Fukushima Prefecture had to be relocated, and the government has spent the last five years struggling with the aftermath. The incident is regarded as the world's largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Read more...

Here's what happens when you tell Tinder matches your dad just died

Mourning the loss of a parent can be one of the most difficult times in a person's life—a time when swiping on Tinder is literally the last thing on your mind.

And yet, after comedian Jenn Welch's father passed away three weeks ago, that's exactly where she found comfort—in the swiping and messaging dynamics of Tinder. Even more, the experience proved amusing, enlightening, and heartwarming for her.

Welch found herself thinking about Tinder in the days following her dad's death, as she really wished wasn't going through this difficult time on her own

"Obviously I can’t date right now. That’s not fair to do to anybody—to hope that another person will swoop in and make me feel better while I grieve the loss of my father," says Welch. And that got her to thinking about the logistics of actually finding a date while grieving

"Like, how would I even go about getting a date right now? I’d just go on Tinder and tell dudes my dad just died?" pondered Welch.

"I guess I have a dark sense of humor—I definitely got that from my dad—and as soon as the idea of going on Tinder and straight-up telling dudes that my dad just died popped into my head I couldn’t let it go," Welch continued Read more...

Play this hilarious voice-activated 'Flappy Bird' that's going viral

If you thought Flappy Bird was frustratingly addictive, you're going to love this voice-activated version.

Eight Note is rapidly going viral across Asia, with thousands of players literally screaming at their phones.

The game sounds pretty simple. The character has to jump across blocks and avoid falling.

The only catch? The character's jumps are controlled by the volume of your voice.

It's pretty great to watch.

A small murmur will cause the character to shuffle slightly, whereas a shrill scream will result in a huge leap.

The game has two modes: Endless and Stages — which are pretty self-explanatory. Read more...

The mechanism behind booking a ride on your phone is actually really complex

Every time you click to book a ride on the Grab app, the machinery that clicks in the background crunches some serious numbers to pair you with a driver.

It's "staggeringly complex," as Grab's head of engineering, Ditesh Gathani, put it in an interview with Mashable.

Underneath the seemingly simple process of booking, the system has to achieve a few goals, such as: providing the passenger with a driver, at reasonable cost within minutes; and to do this with as few buttons to press, and fields to fill in as possible.

It also runs predictive analytics in real-time to figure out where demand will be, so the app can tell drivers where to go in the next few hours. Add that to machine-learning, with the system figuring out your routine and filling in where you want to go on some days. Read more...

Google says the Pixel 2 will launch this year and it'll be pricey

If there was ever any doubt that Google would release a successor to the Pixel and Pixel XL, its best smartphones ever, you can now lay those fears to rest and sleep easy at night.

He also reaffirmed the Pixel will remain a premium device with a premium price, which means it likely won't start at a price that's lower than the current $650 for the 32GB Pixel (a 128GB version sells for $100 more). 'For Honor' review: a unique blend of hack-and-slash and fighting games, but little else

A samurai stands with her katana drawn, cautiously stepping backwards as an axe-wielding viking barrels toward her.

The viking's axe swings in a deadly downward arc, but the samurai meets it with her own weapon, parrying the attack and following up with a flurry of quick cuts. She charges into the viking, briefly opening up his guard and punishing his slow reflexes with a powerful blow.

Nearing death, the viking rolls to the side to run, but the samurai, eyes locked on her foe, launches a knife at him. The viking topples and the samurai runs off to find the next fight.

For Honor is a hack-and-slash style fighting game featuring samurai, vikings and knights where it's all about the fights — the thrill of going up against an opponent and carving your own combative path to outwit and outmaneuver them with a series of attacks, blocks, dodges and punishes.  Read more...

Facebook is testing out a new City Guides feature for select iOS and Android users. It's Facebook's answer to TripAdvisor, providing curated suggestions for local attractions, events, restaurants and more. To keep the experience properly social, it also shows you a list of friends who've visited the city and what they did when they were there.

'Destiny 2' will not carry over your character progress from 'Destiny'

Say goodbye to all the gear and currency you've spent hours and hours (and hours) farming for in Destiny, because the sequel won't let you transfer any of it over.

In a blog post today, Bungie announced that in order to make the second Destiny game feel like a true sequel, Destiny 1 players will not be able to bring any of their earned items or abilities over to the new game.

This was previously rumored by Kotaku, whose sources also noted that Destiny's sequel will be coming to PC as well as Xbox One and PS4.

The team won't completely forget about players who've spent hundreds or even thousands of hours with their Guardians, though. If you've reached level 20 on a Guardian and finished the Black Garden story mission, you'll be able to carry over that Guardian's class, race, gender, face, hair and marking selections. Additionally, you will receive "honors that reflect your Destiny 1 accomplishments." Read more...

IT ME DAISY THE DOG HELLO HI!

According to Daisy's mom, Jessica Woodruff, Daisy unfortunately lost all seven of her puppies in a barn fire on Feb. 20.

After she lost her puppies, Daisy just wasn't the same.

"Daisy wondered [sic] the 80+ acres lost, sad and confused," she said. "As a mother, I couldn't fathom her loss." Read more...

Google Photos has a brand new feature to magically improve your pics

Google Photos, the company's much-loved photo storage app, is introducing yet another way to improve your snapshots without any hassle.

The company announced a new "auto white balance" feature on Thursday. Now, when users select a filter, the Google Photos app will correct the white balance in an image in addition to the exposure and saturation. Users can tweak things further by going into "Color" and adjusting the warmth and tint.

Simply put, white balance is a tool used to render colors correctly. Sometimes due to lighting, photos can turn out too yellow, as in the example bellow, or eerily blue. Auto white balance is a staple feature of most cameras and photo-editing tools, and it helps your pictures look better and more natural.  Read more...

Dying author pens heartbreaking dating profile for her beloved husband

We’ve all read a lot of online dating profiles in our time, but you’ve probably never read one as heartbreakingly good as this one.

Amy Krouse Rosenthal, who is terminally ill with ovarian cancer, penned a stunning essay for this week's Modern Love in the New York Times in which she glowingly recommends her husband, Jason, and urges someone to swipe right on him.

Is it weird to love a window?

A post shared by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (@missamykr) on

It’s as beautifully written as it is soul-crushingly sad. Perhaps that's not surprising, since Rosenthal is the bestselling author of many classic children’s books — Little Pea, Spoon, and Duck! Rabbit! among them — and a memoir, Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal.  Read more...

#BoycottTheBefore wants you to rethink what eating disorder recovery looks like

Just a few months ago, Lexie Louise deleted a photo from her Instagram that compared her body during her eating disorder to her body after recovery.

She realized these popular side-by-side images, which spread widely across social media to increase awareness and promote the benefits of recovery, can actually do more harm than good. So, she created an empowering hashtag campaign called #BoycottTheBefore to call them out.

"I deleted my 'then' vs. 'now' recovery photos from social media today," Louise wrote in a post explaining her decision. "Why? Well, because I am seeing I am so much more than just a comparison photo." Read more...

The next skill for Amazon Echo could replace a 50-year-old home gadget

Amazon reportedly has new tech in the works that could let you talk to anyone in any room in your house. Yes, Amazon just re-invented the intercom, only this time it's going to be built into the Echo.

Rumors surfaced last month that pointed to Amazon and Google's plans to bring home phone functionality to their smart hub assistants, the Echo and Home. It's a logical step for the household-based smart devices — but it might not end there.

Multiple anonymous sources told Recode that Amazon is moving forward with its telephony project and is also working to turn Echo devices into a smart intercom system for the home. The sources claim the devices, which are currently in beta testing within the company, could be announced in the coming months.  Read more...

Thanks, Trump: I guess we are cool with George W. Bush now

Here's a fun reality in Donald Trump's America: the new crown jewel of our talk show circuit is painter, president and poncho enthusiast George W. Bush.

Yes, as Trump subjects the country to his vast, festering ego, some people are noticing that Bush, who's on the road promoting his new art book Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, suddenly seems kind of ... endearing? Not because of anything he's done, necessarily, but because of good old contrast.

Thanks, contrast!

You know things are bad when George W. Bush starts sounding like a member of the Resistancehttps://t.co/OoGOjcVzfq

Boom, this little girl just dropped a hilarious, explosive truth bomb on Nigel Farage on live TV

Out of the mouths of babes, as it goes. On Friday, Nigel Farage, the British warm ale to Donald Trump's skunked American keg beer, ended up on the receiving end of a stone cold diss. By a young girl. Holding an inflatable sword. On live television.

Farage was making an appearance on Russia Today on Friday. RT, as its better known, is widely considered to be a propaganda arm of the Kremlin. Farage was on a news segment where RT apparently invites guests to see what kind of inane setups they'll agree to. Whatever the case may have meant to be, it wasn't what happened here.

It seems maybe the young girl was supposed to say something else, as the camera cuts right to her. But whatever was actually meant to happen, we can absolutely guarantee you, this is way, way better. Read more...

Moon missions continue Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk's rocket-measuring contest

Another day, another unhinged-sounding plan to fly to the moon announced by an eccentric billionaire.

According to a report from the Washington Post, Blue Origin — the spaceflight company founded by Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos — is planning to set up an "Amazon-like" service to send cargo to the moon in the hopes that people will eventually settle there.

The first "Blue Moon" mission — conducted with NASA's help — could launch as early as July 2020, according to the report.

The Blue Origin news hits just days after SpaceX's Elon Musk announced that his spaceflight company plans to send two unnamed people on a trip around the moon at the end of next year.  Read more...

Lena Dunham is having a Rihanna moment with her new tattoo, whether you want her to or not

Lena Dunham's tattoos have always been in the public eye – along with the rest of her skin, as critics love to mention – so her recent Instagram post showing off a new chest piece comes as a not-huge surprise, really.
