Here's how winter storms like Stella get their (unofficial) names

Talking about the weather might be a dull move at dinner parties or over cocktails. But online, it seems there's no more captivating topic than the snow, sleet, rain or ice falling outside our windows.

The Weather Channel has capitalized on this interest by giving unofficial names to winter storms, in turn spawning hashtags and headlines that blanket the internet. As anyone on Twitter saw on Tuesday, the entire U.S. Northeast was gabbing about #StellaBlizzard.

The storm was expected to dump at least a foot of snow on as many as 100 million people across the northern U.S. Some meteorologists described the storm system as "bombogenesis," a fancy way of saying an area of low pressure is rapidly intensifying. Read more...

UCLA star's dad makes outlandish boast, promptly gets roasted in hilarious Twitter hashtag

LaVar Ball — who is neither a player nor a coach, but a star player's parent — has been the talk of March Madness so far.

We gave you the rundown on Ball on Monday (check it out here), but had to come back with an important update. Ball's boastful hubris has now led him to the place where boastful hubris inevitably leads everyone in 2017: Getting roasted on Twitter.

There's even a hashtag, so you know it's real.

LaVar Ball — whose son Lonzo is a superstar freshman point guard for UCLA — has made a habit of loud-mouthed bragging all this season. But he topped himself in an interview published Monday by saying he could have beat Michael Jordan one-on-one during their respective primes. (Counterpoint: Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time, while LaVar Ball averaged two points per game in the one season he played at Washington State in the late 80s.) Read more...

Sleet is the worst form of precipitation imaginable

I first heard it hit the bedroom windows at 6:05 a.m. on Tuesday morning. It was unmistakable, yet I couldn't, or rather, refused to believe it. The metallic tapping of sleet hitting the windows was clear and growing louder with each wind gust, until the chaotic chorus of the wintry mix was impossible to ignore.

My wife, Olga, woke up, alarmed.

"Is that sleet?" she said, followed by "this is bullshit."

I married a smart woman.

You see, to a weather geek, sleet is the lowest form of precipitation. It stings you in the face when it hits you. It makes a noisy racket on windows and skylights. Yet it bounces off tree branches and accumulates in an icy, slushy mess on the ground, packing down any previously fallen snow.  Read more...

Amazon Echo finally gets the one feature it should have had when it launched

The Amazon Echo is the gadget that keeps on giving.

Amazon quietly updated its smart speaker with support for connecting to Bluetooth—a feature that the smaller and cheaper Echo Dot has had since day one.

Although no reason was given as to why it took some two years for the Echo to get Bluetooth speaker support, it's still a welcome update.

The Echo's built-in woofer, tweeter and reflex port spit out some pretty good omnidirectional sound (comparable to Logitech's UE Boom). But if you wanted better wireless sound, you were kind of screwed until now. Read more...

Fasten creates an Uber-meets-Foursquare site, starting with Austinites at SXSW

What if Uber could not only help you get somewhere but suggest where you should go

And what if it wasn't Uber but another ride-hailing app that isn't riddled with controversy?

As of today, there is an option (for SXSW): Fasten released Tuesday a website called "Fasten Vouch." Instead of relying on just recommendations from friends or random reviews online, Fasten users, or anyone, can rely on this website to understand where people (locals and visitors) are actually going.

Timed with the rest of the South by Southwest conference, the feature is only available in Austin, Texas. But the company, which positions itself as the third major ride-hailing player in the United States under Uber and Lyft, is hoping to expand to other cities as they grow.  Read more...

Botnets are zombie armies and other helpful analogies from Alphabet's new Chrome extension

Google's parent company is trying to make complex tech jargon easier to understand.

Is this 'Snowden' clip where Kellyanne Conway got the idea for spying microwaves?

The truth about microwave ovens is not that they can be used for spying. As you're about to see, it's quite the opposite.

But in this brave new world where world leaders forcefully insist that left is down and right is up — often by distorting something they saw on a TV screen moments ago — it's not too much of a stretch to think that Kellyanne Conway may have recently screened Snowden.

In an interview with her hometown paper published Sunday, the senior counselor to President Donald Trump was asked point-blank whether she had any evidence that Trump Tower had been "wiretapped."  Read more...

Wondering what people did during the blizzard? Hooked up, obviously.

Normal blizzard prep involves stockpiling candles, water, and snacks, but many people also went in search of someone to hunker down with.

Dating app Hinge told us that yesterday in New York City they saw twice the amount of usual activity starting around 4 p.m. The surge was in advance of the massive winter storm — dubbed "Stella" by the Weather Channel — that was predicted to hit the city. A last minute search for blizzard buddies, no doubt.

Even though the storm fizzled out for the area, Hinge still saw 10 times the normal activity for a Tuesday morning today. Since schools were closed and transportation spotty, many New Yorkers were trapped at home. So it's clear that many singles spent their day bored and searching for love amidst the thundersleet. Poor goldfish got a custom tiny wheelchair and no one can handle it

Brace yourselves: your heart is about to be stolen by a goldfish.

Taylor Dean, a Youtuber that creates educational animal videos for nearly 300,000 subscribers, has a friend named Derek who works at a local aquarium - and just taught us all how to love by creating a tiny custom wheelchair for a goldfish in need.

And luckily, Dean shared it with the internet.

My friend made a wheelchair for a goldfish pic.twitter.com/QghXTY7rme

— Taylor Nicole Dean (@taylorndean) March 10, 2017

The little fish suffers from swim bladder disease, a disorder that prevents goldfish from controlling their buoyancy in water. When the swim bladder is deformed or infected by bacteria or parasites, the goldfish loses its floatation stability - which could result in a fish floating to the top of the water, heavily leaning toward one side, or even swimming upside down. This Samsung TV looks like framed art when you turn it off

Why does a TV need to look like a big black rectangle in your living room when it's turned off? It doesn't have to be that way.

That's the premise of Samsung's "The Frame" TV, which the company announced Tuesday would be available to consumers sometime this spring.

First debuted at CES 2017, the TV is designed to look like a framed photo when you're not binging Game of Thrones on it.

When the TV's special "Art Mode" is activated, instead of switching off all the pixels, the screen displays one of 100 pieces of art.

"Paired with the numerous options for art layouts and colors, as well as customizable accessory options including interchangeable bezels and an optional Studio Stand, it truly complements the user’s living space," Samsung says in a press release. Read more...

Team Trump leaves door open for microwave spying and Chelsea Clinton is having none of it

Sean Spicer told the world on Tuesday that, no, microwaves are not a good way to spy on people.

That was in response to Queen of Alternative Facts Kellyanne Conway, who recently said these kitchen appliances are just one of the many ways Big Brother may have been watching Donald Trump during his campaign (as he believes but has not yet proven).

Claiming Conway's earlier comments were "made in jest," Spicer didn't completely rule out the possibility of microwave spying: "The microwave is not a sound way of surveilling someone," he told reporters. Read more...

Trying to protect teens by censoring the internet probably doesn't work

There's never a dull moment on the internet, especially if you're a teenager with jokes to make and time to spare.

Don't like that Snapchat filter that turns you into a dog? Get lost in random Reddit threads or spend the day trading GIF-filled tweets with your best friend.

But sometimes the fun comes to an abrupt stop thanks someone else's creepy behavior, and everyone starts wondering (again) if the internet is too dangerous a place for kids.

Parents worry a lot about digital stranger danger and exposure to pornography. Teens often think grownups are overreacting. While there's a lot of panic about worst-case scenarios, a new study suggests the impulse to shield teens from bad experiences online might not be the smartest or most effective move.  Read more...

Kal Penn shares cringeworthy audition scripts from his early days as an actor

Minorities in Hollywood: You've come a long way, even if it doesn't feel like it. Actor Kal Penn found some of his old audition scripts, and the snippets he shared of accented or stereotypical South Asian roles would not survive today's scrutiny. Or at least would get the social media flogging they deserve.

The entertainment industry still has a lot to fix when it comes to minority representation (ahem, Ghost in the Shell), but Penn's tweets show that things have — somewhat — improved.

Penn's thread started with a call for actors that included snake charmers, fire eaters and a "Gandhi lookalike." (At least they spelled Gandhi right?) Read more...

I'm starting to love Instagram Stories more than Snapchat because I'm incredibly thirsty

Instagram and Snapchat are basically the same thing now, with one major difference: Everyone you know is on the first, and not the second.

I know, Snapchat is cool—the superior offering, really—but it's true. Instagram, quickly becoming the dad-rock of social media, has 300 million daily users versus 158 million on Snapchat. I didn't think this mattered until Snapchat shot itself in the foot with a small but significant update recently.

It's all to do with Stories, which work similarly on each platform. Basically, you take a picture or short video and post it under your profile, where your followers—all of them, or a select group, depending on your settings—can watch it for a span of 24 hours.  Read more...

The chat app war between Microsoft and Slack heats up

Senator slams military leaders over Facebook pornography scandal

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand blasted military leaders on Tuesday over a pornography scandal involving thousands of marines sharing nude photos — some of active servicemembers and veterans —- in a private Facebook group.

"Who has been held responsible? Have you actually investigated and found guilty anybody?" she asked leaders of the Navy and Marines at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

"Where's the accountability for failure? Who is being held accountable for doing nothing since 2013? Who? Which commander?"

Gillibrand likely mentioned 2013 because that's the year she tried to push through a bill that would have taken the ability to deal with sexual assault cases from military commanders and handed it to military prosecutors. Though the bill didn't pass, Gillibrand became known as the Senate's most vigorous defender of the military's victims of sexual assault.  Read more...

'This Is Us' season finale pulls off the show's cruelest twist yet

The season finale of This Is Us is a mashup of How I Met Your Mother and Scenes from a Marriage. Save for a few scenes near the conclusion, the episode is devoted to Jack and Rebecca, flashing back to the days just before they met and then to the night of Rebecca’s first touring gig with Ben’s band, which goes horribly awry, ending the night in tears. Then again, when does a night with the Pearsons not end in tears?

The finale expertly subverts our expectations of seeing Jack die, since last week's ominous ending certainly implied that he was headed for a tragic demise. Perhaps the show's biggest twist yet is that creator Dan Fogelman chose not to deploy that reveal at the climax of the first season, when audiences have become trained to expect a shocking ending. It's agonizing to think that we have to wait even longer to get some semblance of closure about Jack's death, but you've got to admit that it's also kind of a genius move on the part of the producers.  Read more...

Google Maps can now take you deep inside this fiery volcano

Google Maps is like our digital third eye, allowing us to see practically every swath of the Earth's surface. Now the mapping tool can take us underground, into the fiery depths of a volcano.

As of Wednesday, Google's Street View lets users explore one of the world's largest boiling lava lakes. Just track down the Marum crater on the Vanuatuan island of Ambrym.

The lava lake is the latest fascinating, but mostly impractical, addition to Street View. In February, the tech giant added panoramic vistas of southern GreenlandRead more...

Uber wants to wean drivers off Google Maps and on to their new system

Uber has been weathering quite a storm lately, but the ride hailing company wants to remind you: It also builds technology, and not just sexism scandals.

On Wednesday, Travis Kalanick's beleaguered startup officially launched a new navigation system for its drivers. Features include lane guidance, next turn previews and real-time traffic information. It's also introduced a night-time look to make the app easier on the eyes in the dark.

Rolling out on both iOS and Android, the tool will give Android users access to in-app navigation for the first time. Previously, the latter would have to switch out of Uber's app into Google Maps or Waze to plan their route. On iOS, the update has begun in some cities, but its launch on Android is still in its early stages. Read more...

Hundreds of David Bowie stamps quite literally fell to earth from the sky

David Bowie was The Man Who Fell to Earth and now he has quite literally just done that, in the most peculiar way.

In homage to the late singer, who died in January 2016, Royal Mail has launched special 10-stamp sets into the sky.

The stamps feature images of Bowie's best loved album covers and on stage.

52 sets in total (the same number of years of Bowie's professional recording career) were attached to helium balloons with cameras, just like Bowie's character in that movie.

When the balloons burst, after reaching 34,100m at a speed of about 12mph, the stamps began descending at nearly 200mph.  Read more...

Yup, the pen trumps keyboards when it comes to learning

Is the pen mightier than the keyboard?

Yes, according to two Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) scientists, who say that using a pen triggers the brain in a way that makes it more ready to learn.

During a two-month-long research project, neuropsychologists Audrey van der Meer and Ruud van der Weel studied brain activity in subjects typing and taking notes by hand.

"We wanted to gather evidence about what was going inside the brain when you type or when you write," said van der Meer.

Subjects wore electroencephalography (EEG) nets with some 256 sensors on each, while typing a description of a word, then using a pen to draw it. Read more...

New version of Chrome is much easier on your laptop's battery

If there's one complaint about Chrome that keeps popping up lately, it's that Google's web browser — once a lightweight alternative to the much slower Internet Explorer and Firefox — is a resources hog.

Now, Google has partly addressed that issue by throttling background tabs so that they don't use a lot of CPU time, thus saving power.

According to a post on Google's Chromium blog, the change, which went live with Chrome version 57, makes background tabs 25% less busy. This, in turn, should have a considerable impact on a laptop's battery life, though Google doesn't state exactly how big.  Read more...

Mermaid toast is very pretty to look at, but it's no fad... yet

Toast isn't something that inspires much excitement, but adding colour seems like a sure way to make it more photogenic.

Add the word mermaid, and you might just have a nice sounding idea. Too late if you thought of mermaid toast just then, because it's a foodstuff that's already getting plenty of love on Instagram.

And hell, it's not hard to see why. It's toast, but buttered with swathes of blue-green algae powder mixed with almond milk cream cheese.

Sure, that sounds like an odd combination, but now it kinda looks like a painted canvas. Bet you can't stop looking. Read more...

Volvo's Tesla killer to arrive in 2019 with a 250-mile range

Volvo is building an electric vehicle, and, somewhat surprisingly, it's not going to cost a ton of money.

According to Automotive News, Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of the luxury car maker's USA arm, told journalists at the Geneva auto show that the company aims to launch the car in 2019 with a $35,000 - $40,000 price.

Very few details are known about the car at this point — not even its size has been decided — but Kerssemakers claimed it will have a range of at least 250 miles.

Volvo already offers hybrid variants of several of its models, including the XC90 SUV and the V60, but it doesn't have a purely electric car.  Read more...

St. Patrick's Day expectations vs. reality

Every year on March 17, when the lions are hopefully growing weary and the lambs are getting ready for their debut, we come together as a society to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, a long-standing religious and culturally Irish holiday celebrating the Feast of Saint Patrick.

It wouldn't be a cultural holiday if we didn't America it up by consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, wearing stupid T-shirts, and eating nauseating, dyed green foods.

But, just like any other holiday, St. Patrick's Day inevitably comes with high expectations that are rarely met. As hard as you try to make this day great, here are some things that will stand in your way, and the reality you will likely face as a result. Read more...

The competitive Super Smash Bros. community is coming together to help out one of their own after a player went into cardiac arrest at a tournament in February.

Player Nicholas "Ministry" McGuire went into cardiac arrest during the BEAST 7 Smash tournament in Sweden in February after an artificial valve in his heart stopped working. Since being rushed to the hospital on Feb. 19 and moving around to multiple intensive care units at two different hospitals, McGuire's hospital bills are piling up and his sister Katherine McGuire has set up a GoFundMe page for some financial support.

Google Family Link is a good start for parental controls, but here's what needs work

Google's got a new tool for parents: Family Link, a way for them to keep tabs on what their kids are doing on their devices, especially for those younger than 13. It has a good framework of parental controls, but some of the tools lack much-needed detail. Still, most parents will enjoy is the way it enables you to remotely manage activity: You can approve or deny your kids' requests from anywhere.

Family Link represents Google's attempt to address the trend of kids accessing devices and the internet at younger and younger ages. It gives kids real Google accounts, complete with Gmail addresses and access to most Google services, like Maps and search—but with restrictions that only the parent can control. Read more...

Google opens up to kids under 13 with Family Link

Google has its eye on your kids.

The tech giant is opening up its many online services to kids under 13 with a new tool called Family Link: an app that lets parents carefully manage the content on their kids' devices. It marks one of the first attempts by a major tech company to directly address the reality of kids using tech products, potentially acquiring many more customers in the process — albeit in a limited way.

Family Link allows kids to use real Google services — Gmail, Maps, Chrome and more — not watered down, "kiddie" versions. However, kid accounts are directly tied to parent accounts, and there are many granular controls over what kids can and can't do. Each app has an overall rating for its content (Maps, for example, is rated "G"), and parents can limit the time a child uses a specific app or service, or block it altogether. Read more...

The 5 second rule might not be that gross after all, scientists say

Let's be honest, we've all picked up a piece of food from the floor after dropping it and eaten it. But, the jury has long been out about the safety of the "five second rule," which states that if you pick food up quickly enough, it's still edible and will do you no harm.

Researchers at the University of Aston, in Birmingham, UK, claim they've found that the five second rule might, in certain instances, be safe and it could actually be extended to half an hour.

Germ expert Professor Anthony Hilton from Aston University claims the rule depends entirely on the nature of the floor surface and the type of food dropped. "Obviously, food covered in visible dirt shouldn’t be eaten, but as long as it’s not obviously contaminated, the science shows that food is unlikely to have picked up harmful bacteria from a few seconds spent on an indoor floor," says Hilton

Of course, eating food that's spent any amount of time on the floor can never be entirely risk-free, says Hilton. Read more...

This guy is crowdfunding to send politicians a spine

Think your politicians are spineless? That they should grow a backbone?

Well, now you can quite literally send them one. Nothing is holding you back.

Cameron Scott calculated that it would cost £18,867 ($23,050) to send a £57 model of the human spine to each MP who voted down an amendment to the Brexit Bill, which would have given Parliament a vote on the final deal with the European Union.

His post on Reddit went viral, and Scott did what everyone should do in these situations: he set up a crowdfunding pageRead more...

MashReads Podcast: 'The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas' is a haunting short story that'll stick with you for years

You don't need a write a long novel to create a story that will stick with you for years.

Or at least that's the case with Ursula Le Guin's short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." In a only four short pages, Ursula Le Guin has crafted an iconic short story that is as haunting as it is brief.

“The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” is about the utopia of Omelas, an idyllic land filled with festivals, sun and happiness. But as a part of an undisclosed bargain, the joy of Omelas is only possible if one child experiences extreme pain. This child is imprisoned in a cellar or broom closet, covered in sores and can have no happy thing or kind word offered to him. Everyone in Omelas knows of this child — citizens usually learn of the child when they are between 10-12 years old – and many accept this child’s pain as a fact of life. The ones who do not, walk away from Omelas into the great unknown never to return.  Read more...

The Trump-like terror lurking in a forgotten sci-fi classic

The Dystopia Project is Mashable's ongoing book series reflecting on what dystopian fiction has to teach us under our new political climate. This week: Asimov's Foundation trilogy.

When you think of mid-20th century dystopias, most people go right to Brave New World (1932) or Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948). What you're unlikely to think of? Their rough contemporary, the Foundation Trilogy (1951-1953). Possibly because you've never read it.

But you should. Even though it hails from the faded age of gee-whizz atomic-powered sci-fi stories, Isaac Asimov's classic has a lot to offer 21st century America.  Read more...

After debuting Facebook Stories — its near identical clone of Snapchat Stories — in Ireland earlier this year, the company is rolling out its feature to users more widely.

Stories live in a horizontal layout above the News Feed, similar to Instagram Stories. The Messenger shortcut has moved to the bottom center of the screen, and its previous location has been taken over by "Direct," more on that below.

Finn Jones blames Trump for everyone hating problematic 'Iron Fist'

It might be time to take Finn Jones off his own show's press tour. The actor and star of Netflix's upcoming Marvel's Iron Fist can't wrap his mind around fans rejecting a white billionaire protagonist — except that now there's Donald Trump.

"We filmed the show way before Trump’s election," Jones told Radio Times. "And I think it’s very interesting to see how that perception, now that Trump’s in power, how it makes it very difficult to root for someone coming from white privilege, when that archetype is public enemy number one."

Trump's Snoop beef is his latest attempt to distract us from some major issues

President Trump has a lot on his plate right now, none of it particularly good for him, so he's turned to the tried and true method of distraction: a hip-hop beef.

On Tuesday night, Rachel Maddow released a portion of Trump's 2005 tax returns on her show — after a lengthy build-up — and chatted with the reporter who got a hold of the documents, David C. Johnston. The White House tried to undercut Maddow's report by releasing info on the returns before the show even aired.

But by Wednesday morning, Trump was up to his old tricks, trying to downplay Johnston, who has won a Pulitzer Prize and written a book about Trump, talking up a rally he's got planned, and, yes, starting up a Twitter beef with rapper Snoop Dogg. Read more...

'American Gods' trailer is pure fantasy — in the best way

Spring is coming, and thank goodness because that means we're closer to American Gods, based on Neil Gaiman's award-winning fantasy novel. Starz released a new trailer for the show on Wednesday and, as a character narrates at the end of the spectacular minute of footage, "It will be glorious."

American Gods stars Ian McShane, Ricky Whittle, Pablo Schreiber, Gillian Anderson, Kristin Chenoweth, Yetide Badaki and more, in a world where gods exist because people believe in them. As people stop believing, the gods lose power, and new gods emerge to reflect what we value. Shadow (Whittle) and Mr. Wednesday (McShane) prefer the old gods and urge them to fight the new ones, leading to the trailer's promised carnage. Read more...

Apple Music threw an awkward rap party at SXSW, and we were there for the weirdness

Is wearing Apple AirPods at a concert normal? Probably not. But it made sense at last night's Apple Music party.

Kind of.

So goes the music portion of SXSW, which has traditionally involved Pandora, Spotify, Soundcloud and record labels throwing solid parties with fairly respectable lineups of artists, to say nothing of the dozens of showcases putting globally up-and-coming music talent on display.

This year, however, we saw Apple Music make its mark.

SXSW has been going on since 1987, bringing together executives and influencers in technology, music, and entertainment. It's a lot of loud "activations," closed-door dealmaking, and partying. It's gotten increasingly bigger (and some might argue: worse) every year. And true to its recent history, this year marked yet another SXSW first, with Apple getting in on the frenzy with its own events. Read more...

Tech companies to Trump: Your travel ban still sucks (and we're here to help strike it down)

Tech companies have a message for Donald Trump — your travel ban is still garbage, and we're going to keep on fighting it.

More than 50 tech companies filed an official brief early Wednesday morning in support of Hawaii's efforts to strike down the most recent iteration of the Trump administration's efforts to prevent refugees and other immigrants from entering the U.S.

Their argument is essentially the same as the first time around — that it's going to hurt U.S. businesses and is, you know, morally disgusting.

Hawaii is claiming that the ban hurts the state by negatively affecting its ability to generate income from travel and tourism as well as its general reputation as a friendly location with a diverse population. Read more...

Blizzard Entertainment is suing a cheating service for $8.7 million

Blizzard Entertainment, the developers of Overwatch, Hearthstone, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Heroes of the Storm, filed a motion against the creators and sellers of several cheating services that target multiple Blizzard games. They're asking for $8.7 million in damages.

Blizzard filed the lawsuit in July against the cheating company Bossland, which openly sells software that runs bots in several different games, allowing players to farm gold and experience or otherwise hack games to give players advantages that Blizzard says ruin the integrity of the game. In a motion filed Monday obtained by TorrentFreak, Blizzard asked that Bossland cease its operations in relation to Blizzard games and said it is seeking the minimum in damages for Bossland's repeated instances of copyright infringement, totaling over $8.5 million, or rather $8.7 million with attorneys' fees and other costs. That 1997 'Cinderella' with Whitney Houston and Brandy is the best live-action Disney remake

Sorry, Beauty and the Beast: ABC's 1997 televised remake of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella is the best live-action remake of a Disney film.

Yeah, I said it.

In the face of the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast film coming out this weekend this may be a bold statement to make, but the layers within the '90s TV version make it easy to argue that the Emmy-winning production deserves just as much praise now as it did then.

Nazis were actual meth heads and history makes so much more sense

Ever wondered what a powerful country in the midst of a meth epidemic might look like under fascist leadership?

Turns out there's precedent, and it's not pretty. According to an eye-opening book published in the U.S. this month, meth addiction quite literally gave us history's greatest industrial menace: the Nazi war machine. It even got the teetotal Hitler in its grip during World War II.

The book by German historian and journalist Norman Ohler is called Blitzed, and it's as breezy and darkly humorous as its title. But don't be fooled by the gallows humor of chapter names like "Sieg High" and "High Hitler": This is a serious and original work of scholarship that dropped jaws around Europe when it was published there last year.  Read more...

5 ways to make the 'Matrix' reboot not suck

Last night's news that Warner Bros. wanted to resurrect The Matrix sent countless fans scrounging for a blue pill to help them escape this horrifying reality in which studios seem hell-bent on issuing reboot after reboot that nobody ever asked for.

But forgetting this reboot won't keep it from happening. The best we can hope for is Warner Bros. won't screw it up too much. In that light, then, we've got a few suggestions for Warner Bros. as to how to make their new Matrix good, or at least not totally terrible.

Part of the problem is that what felt bracingly new and original 18 years ago can't help but feel stale now, particularly when The Matrix's stamp has been all over action and sci-fi cinema in that time. In fact, this month's live-action Ghost in the Shell kinda brings the influence full circle – it's being described as the new Matrix when the original Matrix was actually inspired by the original, animated Ghost in the Shell. Do we really need a new The Matrix to follow in the footsteps of the new Ghost in the Shell? Read more...
