It's-a me, the Mario-themed bar of your dreams

If you live in the Washington, D.C., area and you love yourself some Mario, there's a bar for you.

The Drink Company, a group of bars under the ownership of cocktail expert Derek Brown, has put together some Cherry Blossom PUBs (Pop-Up Bars) to celebrate cherry blossom season in the nation's capital.

One of those pop-up bars takes place inside Mockingbird Hill, and the Mario-theme has proven so popular that the Washingtonian reports it takes two hours to get in. But one look at some of the photos of the place, and you'll realize exactly why it's worth the wait.

Art supply sales are up, because protest signs don't make themselves

Looks like Donald Trump has gotten people to buy more markers. And, no, not just to draw caricatures of him—although that does sound nice and cathartic.

According to market research company NPD Group, sales of craft supplies have been up since preparations began for the Women's Marches held across the country the day after Trump's inauguration.

Those protest signs aren't gonna make themselves.

Blizzard is being less controlling over what countries will be in this year's 'Overwatch' World Cup

The Overwatch World Cup is back, but this time you get to help your country make the cut.

The 2017 Overwatch World Cup is bringing 32 teams representing 32 countries together to compete for glory once again, but this time countries are invited based on their average competitive skill rating from its top 100 players. So the more you and your fellow countrypeople have won in competitive, the better chance your country has at competing at the Overwatch World Cup this year.

In a change from last year's World Cup, fans no longer get to directly vote for who they want to play on their country's team. This time around, players vote on which Overwatch experts (chosen by Blizzard) will assemble the teams for them. These experts will include analysts, coaches, statisticians, and more. Only "eligible players" will be able to vote for them, although Blizzard did not share what qualifies them at the time of the announcement regarding eligibility. Read more...

Samsung avoids the explosive elephant in the room

Samsung's big Unpacked event in New York City today was focused squarely on unveiling the new Galaxy S8, but there was a specter hanging over the proceedings: the explosive legacy of the Galaxy Note 7

The fate of the Note 7 is a topic Samsung hasn't been able to shake, as much as the company hopes its impressive new generation of products could make everyone magically forget about it. The scope of its failure was unprecedented, making the Samsung brand a punchline and raising questions about production standards and how much control we really have over our precious smartphones.

So when Samsung's parade of executives took the stage today to show off the S8, many expected there'd be some mention of the device, if even only in passing, to put its legacy to rest.  Read more...

Underrated horror MMO 'The Secret World' is going free-to-play

Do you like the mind-twisting horror of H.P. Lovecraft? The blissful tedium of an RPG grind? The Secret World mashed those two concepts together.

Funcom's woefully underrated and underplayed MMO is set to return this spring with a new title — Secret World Legends — and so, so, sooooo much more. From the sound of things, a totally new, free-to-play game has been built right on top of the old one.

Legends takes The Secret World's framework — literally, everything that's been released in the game to date — and re-works it as an action-RPG. New combat mechanics, new ways to level up... but all wrapped around the same 100+ hours of content in The Secret World. Read more...

Three tornado chasers were killed Tuesday night, raising new safety questions

Chasing tornadoes is not exactly a low-risk activity, between the hazards the atmosphere can throw at you and the challenge of driving while keeping an eye on the sky.

However, until recently, there had never been a recorded death of a tornado chaser, despite the activity's increasing popularity in the wake of the 1997 film Twister

On Tuesday night, the tight-knit community of professional storm chasers suffered a wrenching loss when three well-known storm trackers, Gene Williamson, Randall Delane Yarnall, and Corbin Lee Jaeger, were killed in a high-speed collision while chasing a storm near the rural Texas community of Spur.  Read more...

Lyft just came out with its biggest innovation yet: buses

Lyft is truly an innovator of transportation.

The ride-hailing app is testing a new service in San Francisco and Chicago called Shuttle. Like the name suggests, Shuttle is basically a bus.

Lyft users in those two cities can request a Lyft Line like they normally would, and then see the option to switch to a Shuttle if they are near one of the preset Shuttle routes. Those routes have preset pickup and dropoff points, like, again, a bus.

Shuttle will only be available during weekday commuter hours, from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  Read more...

LGBTQ people to Trump: We're here, we're queer, and you won't erase us

That's the message the LGBTQ community is sending the Trump administration, after the U.S. Census Bureau revealed this week that questions related to sexuality or gender identity will not be included in the 2020 U.S. Census or the more detailed American Community Survey.

The move caused LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD to declare that the Trump administration is "erasing the LGBTQ community from the USA." The feeling of erasure has resonated with the community, leading queer people to mobilize around the hashtag #CantEraseUs. Read more...

Podcasts join the Netflix-style world of bingeing with new one from creator of 'Serial'

It's refreshing in modern media when the answer to the question "Why did you do this?" is "instinct."

"There's not really any analysis or metrics or anything really in podcasting," said Julie Snyder, executive producer of "S-Town," a new podcast that follows closely in the steps of "Serial," the smash-hit that Snyder also co-created. "There's very little that you know, so you're really going off of gut instinct."

In the data-soaked world of digital media, podcasting remains something of a bookish alcove in comparison to the rest of its digital cousins. When Snyder and her co-creators sat down to structure "S-Town" — their new true-crime podcast released on Tuesday — it occurred to them that the story might best be served if the entire thing could be posted at once.  Read more...

Samsung has a ghastly cover for you to uglify your Galaxy S8

Elon Musk draws farting unicorn to showcase Tesla's new Sketch Pad feature

Of course the new software update for Tesla cars has a hidden feature. Of course, it's a sketch pad.

And of course, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the feature with a drawing of what appears to be a farting unicorn.

Musk shared two drawings, the other one being a slightly displeased Mona Lisa, complete with a signature and all.

The US dollar is so strong right now, even the dead prefer it in the afterlife

With exchange rates fluctuating so much in the real world, it only stands to reason that those in the afterlife could get affected too.

Malaysian papers are reporting that people are starting to turn to foreign currencies such as the U.S. dollar, when it comes to selecting paper money to burn as offerings.

With the Chinese Qing Ming festival coming, where people are expected to burn "money" for their ancestors in the afterlife, stores are selling replicas of U.S., Singapore and Japanese banknotes.

Queen sends card to Britain's oldest man, he DGAF

This is Robert Weighton, he's 109 years old and he has the face of someone who gives zero f*cks. Just look at him:

Image: Solent News/REX/Shutterstock

His face screams: "It's going to take a lot to impress me, even if the Queen in person sends me a card."

Well, that's actually happened.

Weighton, who was born in March 1908 when Edward VII was King and Britain had yet to fight in two world wars, has declined a card from the Queen because he's got too many of them and doesn't want to clutter his cosy home.

"I'd already received one every year and since it's the age of austerity I thought I would save the country a little bit on postage and printing," he told ITV News. "I don't want a whole row of them, there's no point in that." Read more...

India finally becomes a net exporter of electricity

Infamous for its power outages, India can finally tell the world it has become a net exporter of electricity.

India exported 5,700 million units of electricity to neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar during the financial year 2016-17, the power ministry said this week.

In comparison, the nation imported 5,585 million units of electricity during the same period, more than 200 million units short of the export quantity.

"Ever since the cross border trade of electricity started in mid-80s, India has been importing power from Bhutan and marginally exporting to Nepal in radial mode at 33 kV and 132 kV from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh," the ministry said in a press statement.  Read more...

'Racist' question on kid's homework sheet is angering people

What's in a name? A lot apparently, if this first grader's exam question is anything to go by.

The question, which came up on a paper given to seven-year-olds in Malaysia, asked students to match up names with various places of worship.

They were given four names: Devi, Hock Lee, Kamal and Steve, representative of stereotypical names of people in four of the country's main race groups — Indian, Chinese, Malay and Caucasian respectively.

They were asked to match them up to the "correct" place of worship.

The girl matched Devi up to the church, Steve up to the Hindu temple, Kamal to the Chinese temple and Hock Lee to the mosque.  Read more...

Fake Nostradamus predictions amuse Indian Twitter

A blog called 'Nostradamus and India' by the French political writer François Gautier has caused a stir in India after it was published by India's largest-selling English daily and later found to be inaccurate.

Soon after the blog went live on the Times of India, the alternative news portal Alt News exposed it for inventing "fake passages" and attributing them to the famed 16th century French astrologer Nostradamus.

The blog was taken down from TOI and republished on Thursday with a disclaimer.

Gautier claimed in his blog that in 2012, he'd chanced upon some "hidden manuscripts" in an "old trunk". Those manuscripts contained Nostradamus' predictions on the rise of Indian prime minister (a.k.a. "supreme leader") Narendra Modi. Read more...

First he became a rock, now French artist wants to be a chicken

Pop-up exhibition turns poisoned air into ink to send a powerful message

One of the biggest contributors to toxic emissions are vehicles. So an Indian startup is approaching the problem from the rear end. Literally.

It blocks diesel emissions at the point of contact with the atmosphere, recycles the leftover carbon and uses it to make art.

Lisa Kudrow really, really hates having lemons launched at her face

To be fair, we doubt there are many people in this world who would enjoy having fruit projected at their face from a small (but powerful) cannon.

Lisa Kudrow really, really doesn't enjoy it though.

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Kudrow and fellow guests Jessica Chastain and Victoria Beckham took part in a game called "Flinch".

Basically, they had to stand behind a plastic screen and try not to react when James Corden fired a piece of fruit at them from very close range.

Oxford University is shaking up all those portraits of white men on its walls

Oxford University is putting up more portraits of women, people of colour and LGBTQ people to better reflect its "diversity".

The "Diversifying Portraiture initiative" intends to "broaden the range of people represented around the University." According to a statement, the university seeks to "reflect and promote its increasing diversity and its commitment to inclusivity".

The university has been heavily criticised in recent years for its lack of diversity and inclusivity. Last year David Cameron pointed out that the top university accepted only 27 black British students in 2014 out of an intake of more than 2,500. Indeed, until the 1970s, several of the university's colleges were still all-male and didn't admit women as undergraduates. Read more...

Shark-ridden unboxing of the Galaxy S8 is the perfect metaphor for the smartphone industry

The smartphone industry is tough. Phone makers, we imagine, sometimes feel like they're surrounded by sharks. Which is why an underwater unboxing video of Samsung's new Galaxy S8, with sharks swimming around, makes perfect sense.

Also, it's very hard for a phone to catch fire underwater, so that may be another reason for this watery unboxing.

The entire thing is a stunt by T-Mobile, but it's a good one. After the diver is done with unboxing the phone, he uses it to take a video of the apex predator swimming towards him.  Read more...

Stephen Colbert wisely resurfaces video of Trump butchering 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game'

Every sitting U.S. president has thrown the first pitch at at least one Major League Baseball game since President Taft started the tradition in 1910. But not Donald Trump. He has "scheduling conflicts." Sure.

If you've ever seen photos of Trump's previous pitching attempts, they make a pretty clear case for why Trump (and his ego) would turn the opportunity down. Pair that with Trump's abysmal approval ratings in Washington, D.C., and it becomes even clearer.

But what if Trump just doesn't want to be forced to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game?" After all, he did really butcher it in 2000 — and, yes, Stephen Colbert has wisely resurfaced that very clip.  Read more...

Loneliness can worsen common cold symptoms, so call me, k?

The common cold reduces most people to a sniffling, sneezing mess. With a box of tissues and cold medication as meager defenses, our only hope is that the virus will move on quickly.

While everyone suffers through a range of familiar symptoms, including a cough, sore throat and body aches, it turns out that people's emotional lives may significantly affect how awful those symptoms feel.

A study published Thursday in Health Psychology found that people who considered themselves lonely reported worse symptoms after researchers infected them with a cold virus, compared to individuals who were less lonely.   Read more...

Facebook's fundraisers now help you raise money for yourself and friends

If you're hoping to raise money for a good cause, but it isn't tied to a specific organization, Facebook just changed the game.

The social media giant has expanded its fundraisers tool, now letting users create personal fundraiser pages to raise money for themselves, friends, and people or things not on Facebook. Previously, users could only raise money for a registered nonprofit on the platform.

But to stick to social good, the new personal fundraisers can only span six categories: education (like tuition and books), medical (like procedures and treatments), pet medical, crisis relief (like natural disasters), personal emergency (like house fires or theft), and funeral and loss. As the product rolls out, however, Facebook hopes to include more categories and evolve them over time. Read more...

How '13 Reasons Why' is different than other YA adaptations

When Divergent's Allegiant installment flopped at the box office last year, many in Hollywood began questioning whether YA adaptations could remain popular.

After all, not every young adult book can translate into a Hollywood hit like the adaptation of John Green's Fault in Our Stars, which ended up amassing more than $300 million at the worldwide box office in 2014.

But Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, an adaptation of the young adult novel by Jay Asher, serves as a reminder that there is a way to make an adaptation about teens resonate with more than just one audience.

The 8 main excuses Hollywood uses for racially insensitive casting – and why they're BS

Between Iron Fist, Ghost in the Shell and that first Death Note trailer, it's been a banner month for racially insensitive casting.

But while the problem may be getting extra attention right now, it's not new — and it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, either. In fact, with each passing controversy, the excuses have just started to sound more and more familiar.

Hollywood's racial bias comes in many forms. Sometimes it's "whitewashing" — casting a white actor to play a character who was originally conceived of as non-white, like the Major in Ghost in the Shell or Light in Death Note. (John Oliver has an excellent primer on the industry's long history of whitewashing here.)  Read more...

'Ghost in the Shell' has nothing to say about technology or humanity

For a movie that centers around a remarkable scientific achievement – the kind that seems both radical and inevitable in real-world terms – Ghost in the Shell has disappointingly little to say about technology, humanity, or how they intersect.

SpaceX's launch today could revolutionize the industry: Watch it live

On Thursday, SpaceX will attempt something it has never tried before.

SpaceX has been working toward this moment ever since it was founded 15 years ago, and this launch will mark a huge test of its business plan, which specifically aims for reusability in order to reduce the cost of launching payloads to space.

"This launch is really what we need to see more of in order to bend the cost curve of getting hardware out of Earth's gravity well, and indeed signals a bolder, brighter future in space for all of us," Phil Larson, a former communications employee at SpaceX who is now an assistant dean at the University of Colorado at Boulder, said via email. Brands are creating Snapchat 'Shows' with dreams of getting on Discover

Hotel chains aren't really cool. They have cool stuff to offer, like free wi-fi and swimming pools, but if you're a young traveler on a budget, you might be looking more to services like Airbnb.

Here’s how two local Welsh lads made brewing history

There’s a little bit of a rebel within us all. Brad and Gazz — two Welsh lads with a passion for all things beer — decided to take their love for beer a step further back in 2008 and the result is Tiny Rebel Brewery, an award-winning brewing company whose beers can be found in fridges worldwide.

Tiny Rebel’s humble beginnings can be found in a Welsh garage, where Brad and Gazz spent their weekends on their hobby brewing beer. As self-confessed “beer geeks” the pair got pretty good at the brewing lark and began to take it a little more seriously — in 2010 thanks to a few thousand pounds of investment, some more robust brewing equipment and a shed-load of ingredients Tiny Rebel was born and they set about creating their first Tiny Rebel beers. Uber's latest update gives you even more ride hailing power

It's ridiculous, really, that there's anything to complain about ride-hailing apps that give us the power to summon our own personal chariots directly to our front doors—but hey, the system ain't perfect.

Anna is still a hero, Kristoff is still awesome, and Hans is still a dick — but this version's Elsa is a one-dimensional yawn.

A new tool will automate the referral process so you can get a bonus without doing anything

Referring a friend to your company is an easy way to earn some extra money, but it requires keeping track of current job openings — and who all your former colleagues are.

Twitter is loosening up its 140-character limit — again

It's now possible to squeeze in a few extra characters on Twitter.

Beginning now, usernames will no longer count toward the service's 140-character limit, Twitter announced. The change also means that replies will look a whole lot different than before.

Instead of beginning with usernames, tweet replies will contain only the text of the tweet itself and the handles you're replying to will appear inline. Tweets will still be limited to 140 characters but usernames will no longer count toward that limit in replies.

While this means that Twitter will finally be rid of annoying tweets that begin with ".@", it also means replies could get a lot more complicated. Though Twitter will surface the handles of everyone in a conversation separately from the text of the reply, this could get confusing rather quickly if you're in a conversation with multiple participants. Watch a CNN commentator rail against a former congressman who said Obama benefited because of his race

CNN commentator Angela Rye is doing everything she can not to explode.

Rye butted heads with former U.S. Congressman Joe Walsh's on CNN's Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin yesterday after he suggested that President Obama was held to a lower standard because of his race.

The commentator then pushed Walsh to explain why Obama held to a lower standard when our current President had no political experience prior to entering office, among other depressing things.

At one point, Rye even called Walsh a "bigot" because well — you need to see the clip for yourself. Read more...

EPA mistakenly tells the truth about Trump's climate plans

On Thursday morning, the Environmental Protection Agency sent out a press release containing praise for President Donald Trump's executive order that rolls back Obama-era climate change rules.

But the agency's press office made an obvious mistake in the first paragraph, which included harshly critical comments attributed to West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican coal booster and prominent Trump supporter.

The quote, falsely attributed to Capito, actually belonged to Delaware Sen. Tom Carper, a Democrat.

Yet Carper's statement was far closer to the truth of what the Trump administration did when it ordered the EPA to begin the process of dismantling key greenhouse gas emissions reduction programs and other policies aimed at reducing harmful pollution.  Read more...

'War Machine' trailer: Brad Pitt is the latest A-lister headed to Netflix

Is Brad Pitt's Afghanistan War satire War Machine

A) hilarious, because it's right on point and uses Brad Pitt to perfection;

B) depressing, because it's a reminder of how little we've learned from that whole experience; or

C) kinda both?

We're going with C, personally, but your mileage may vary.

Netflix's new feature is based on the real-life rise and fall of Stanley McChrystal, whom you may remember as that U.S. General who was taken down by a Rolling Stone exposé.

It features Pitt in character-actor mode as McChrystal, with Tilda Swinton, Ben Kingsley, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, and RJ Cyler in the supporting cast.  Read more...

You're screwed if you want to repair the new iPad

Apple's new iPad is thin, powerful—and a nightmare to fix when things go wrong.

iFixit, a website and store famous for its detailed repair guides, unveiled its teardown of the new 9.7-inch iPad Thursday, and it's a doozy.

When it comes to how easy the device is to repair, the $329 iPad scores a 2 out of 10. The tablet's innards are held together with "gobs of adhesive" and "foam sticky tape," which means it'll take a seasoned expert—or Apple itself—to fix the thing.

Adhesive is bad news for repair shops. It has to be heated up and then delicately separated by picks or razors, a process that can actually do more damage to the device if you're not careful. Of course, it's also in part what allows the iPad to look sleek and seamless.  Read more...

'Game of Thrones' drops first Season 7 promo and it's chilling

THIS IS NOT A DRILL: HBO has released the first official promo for Game of Thrones Season 7, and we're freaking out.

The new tease features Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen on a long walk towards their thrones, ending with a chilly hint that ruling the seven kingdoms is the least of their problems.

The clip doesn't feature any footage from the new season (although we're fairly confident that Cersei, Daenerys and Jon will be walking places in Season 7), but the symbolism of the new teaser is fairly clear.  Read more...

Is 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' getting a revival?

These days it seems like beloved canceled TV shows are like vampires: constantly coming back from the dead.

But is the mother of all vampire shows next on the revival docket? At a recent reunion for the 20th anniversary of the premiere, the cast of the seminal teen horror classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer covered all sorts of topics during their EW photoshoot, including the possibility of the show's return.

The show's creator and general nerd god Joss Whedon didn't outright nix the idea:

The cast's answers, unsurprisingly, were mixed. Fan favorite James Marsters would happily join a new show only if Whedon was at the helm, and former Buffy and Angel star Charisma Carpenter noted, "It would just make so many people happy.”  Read more...

An exhaustive breakdown of how the new 'It' trailer compares to the original

2017 is fast on its way to being a very, very good year for Stephen King fans.

We've already got the long-awaited adaptation of The Dark Tower coming this summer, and now we also have our first teaser trailer for Andrés Muschietti's It remake to get excited about.

And what's the point in having a teaser if you can't obsessively break it down, frame-by-frame?

In a cathartic effort to forget about the 5+ months we have to wait before the film's actually released, we've been through the new trailer and compared it with scenes from the original 1990 miniseries. Read more...

Jack Dorsey: Profit is just, like, a choice (also Twitter is going to live forever)

Jack Dorsey runs two big, well-known businesses (Twitter and Square), but he doesn't think one of them needs to be profitable, despite how much Wall Street would like it.

“Profitability is a choice, right? It is a choice between investment and driving profit," Dorsey said at Twitter’s international headquarters in Dublin, rounded up in a piece by Silicon Republic

"We believe there is a massive opportunity to grow and invest in the business. In terms of running the two companies, for me it is not a matter of time, it is a matter of focus and making sure we have a good understanding of what matters most and how you prioritize it," he continued.  Read more...

Elephants finally catch a break as ivory prices plunge in China

Elephants, rejoice: China is making a major effort to kick its nasty ivory habit.

On Friday, the Chinese government is slated to shutter more than two dozen factories that carve ivory. Authorities have also committed to closing all retail outlets for ivory jewelry and goods by the end of the year.

Despite the devastating toll on elephants, China's ivory market — the world's largest — has long been legal. In late 2016, however, the government agreed to shut down its ivory trade to help stem the bloodshed of African elephants and save them from extinction.

The Galaxy S8 has an awesome audio feature that will make iPhone owners jealous

It's great to see Samsung's Galaxy S8 include a standard 3.5mm headphone jack (unlike some other phones).

But the future of music listening is undoubtedly wireless, which is why it's also great the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are the first smartphones to include Bluetooth 5.0 with support for not one, but two pairs of wireless headphones or wireless speakers simultaneously.

Compared to Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth 5.0 has four times the range, two times the speed and eight times the broadcast message capacity, according to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the body that develops, licenses and helps set standards for the wireless protocol. Read more...

Crayola has officially killed a crayon. RIP.

Crayola has retired one of the colors from its classic 24-pack early and hearts are breaking.

Last week, the art supply company  announced it would be canning a crayon on March 31 (a.k.a. National Crayon Day), but because the company likes to toy with our emotions, they cast off the weakest link Thursday afternoon.

So who got booted from the box?

Say goodbye to Crayola’s beloved Dandelion.

A spokesperson from Crayola told Mashable that the gold-colored crayon's early departure was due to "a case of wanderlust" and "an adventurous spirit," and though the crayon seems pretty jazzed in its retirement video, we can bet if it'd been given the choice that good old Dandelion crayon wouldn't want to part from its BFFs of over 100 years. Samsung totally knew it put the S8’s fingerprint sensor in a terrible spot

The single worst thing about the Galaxy S8 is easily its relocated fingerprint sensor. Whoever thought it was a smart idea to put it right next to the back camera should get a slap on the wrist because it's just terrible.

Not only is the S8's fingerprint sensor in an incredibly difficult-to-access spot compared to on the S7/S7 Edge, which had the sensor embedded into the home button on the front of the phone, but you're also likely going to smudge the back camera with your naturally greasy fingerprints every single time you go to use it.

Nice dude John Legend defended Kim Kardashian against a cruel Twitter remark

While Chrissy Teigen remains steadfast in her willingness to call out bullshit on Twitter, her husband John Legend takes a more low-key approach to the platform.

His wife's influence seemed clear, however, when he went to bat for his friend Kim Kardashian after a writer mocked her on Twitter for news that she's considering a third pregnancy.

@stuartpstevens that was pretty awful. Shame on you

— John Legend (@johnlegend) March 29, 2017

Chris Evans calls ex Jenny Slate 'my favorite human' so he's probably trying to make us cry

If there's any justice in the world — which Captain America should be doing his damnedest to make sure there is — one day, we'll get a romantic comedy about the bittersweet romance of Chris Evans and Jenny Slate.

Shortly after Slate opened up her relationship with Chris Evans last week, her superhero ex boyfriend spoke about her Wednesday in equally kind, glowing terms.

"She's my favorite human," Evans tells People. "She's the best."

"I’ve never ever ever met someone in my life who has a mastery of the English language the way she does," he continues. "She’ll give you one sentence and there’s no fat to it. You’re like, ‘You just chose such an unbelievable collection of words that beautifully articulate what you say.' It’s like an art form talking with her, because the visuals associated with her expression are just so colorful." Read more...

What's up with the song in the new 'Game of Thrones' trailer?

It's a little on-the-nose for a show about a powerful chair to use the song "Sit Down" in a trailer, but that's what Game of Thrones did to us with the latest taste of Season 7

The song, by British rock outfit James, plays over slow-motion footage of Cersei (Lena Headey), Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Jon (Kit Harington) seating themselves in turn at the Iron Throne.

For reference, the original "Sit Down" video is...nothing like this promo:

It seems an unconventional choice, but the lyrics are more Thrones-y than you'd think: Read more...

NASA astronaut — and all around badass — Peggy Whitson set yet another spaceflight record Thursday. Whitson surpassed NASA astronaut Sunita Williams to become the female astronaut with the most spacewalks under her belt, according to NASA.

With this spacewalk, Whitson has now walked in space a total of eight times. Whitson now also has the most cumulative spacewalking time, beating Williams' record of five hours and 40 minutes. Playing a game in a different language can make or break a world record speedrun

Every second matters when it comes to speedrunning through video games. And where seconds are concerned, console choices and even language choices are vital to shaving off precious time.

Language matters to speedrunners because, sometimes, the difference means there's less text to scroll through. Sometimes the voice acting goes by a little quicker. Or sometimes the local version of the game happens to run smoother or has unique time-saving bugs.

One of the latest crazes in speedrunning exemplifies this perfectly.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played in a bunch of different languages, and one speedrunner did a side-by-side speed comparison of them using one of the game's opening monologues. It turns out the German version goes by quickest: Read more...

New discovery reveals the T. Rex was actually super into foreplay

The Tyrannosaurus Rex has long been seen as the ultimate tough guy of the dinosaur kingdom, but scientists have found the predators may have been into snuggling. Wait...what?

It's true. The T. Rex has been declared "a sensitive lover." Hard to imagine the 20-foot tall, menacing creature was actually a love bug. But new research just published in Scientific Reports suggests that behind all those massive teeth, the T. Rex had a snout that’s as reactive to touch as a human fingertip.

Scientists now think that the T. Rex (and others in that same family) had heads covered in large scales, but with sections of tough, armor-like skin around their mouths.  Read more...

Those GoFundMe campaigns can't simply buy Congress's internet history

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. And of course, very often these days, crowdfunding campaigns, too.

You might've recently come across a link or eight for two different GoFundMe campaigns bouncing around the social web. Their aim? To crowdfund the purchase of members of Congress' internet histories. Both campaigns were inspired by Republicans in the Senate and the House, who recently voted in favor of taking away privacy protections on your internet data, which were set up by former President Barack Obama.

Obama's privacy measures never sprang to life, though, because of the aforementioned vote by both houses of Congress. Now internet service providers can pimp out your data for the foreseeable future (assuming President Donald Trump signs the legislation, which he's basically expected to do). Read more...

The Galaxy S8 could be stupid fast on certain LTE networks

We now have documented proof that the Samsung Galaxy S8 is more than just fast — it's like, gigabit fast.

T-Mobile dropped a video showing the brand new Samsung flagship being put through its paces on the carrier's LTE network in its Bellevue, Washington research lab.

The phone is able to hit some impressive download speeds, flirting with the gigabit barrier.

OK, there's a big caveat here: the test was conducted under lab-controlled conditions. You'll never have a network connection like that out in the real world — but the potential for that level of speed is still tantalizing.  Read more...
