Yes, the 'Game of Thrones' showrunners hated HBO's stupid melting ice stunt as much as you did

If you care about that which is best in life, or if you're (somehow) out of TV to catch up on or binge, then you're probably anxiously anticipating the new season of Game of Thrones like the rest of us.

But now one of the show's lead actors, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (a.k.a. Jaime Lannister) revealed that the people behind the show's ice melting debacle considered the Season 7 date reveal a cringeworthy moment in TV history (of course, the internet agreed).

"I spoke to [showrunners] Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] about that and they were like, 'Oh god… That's embarrassing,'" Coster-Waldau told The Daily BeastRead more...

The verdict is in: Yes, math can, in fact, be fun.

'Know this might seem controversial, but hear it out: Chance the Rapper sat in on a third-grade math class during a surprise Career Day appearance at a Chicago elementary school this week, and it looked extremely enjoyable.

See for yourself. Addition, multiplication, and subtraction are all on the day's menu, and none of the students look even a little mad about it. The lesson even got a cool name: "Math Talk."

Um why is there a teddy bear emoji on these leaked Samsung Galaxy S8 camera photos?

Okay, now the Samsung Galaxy S8 leaks are just getting ridiculous.

We're just days away from Samsung's big reveal, so, naturally, we've pretty much seen the entire phone at this point.

Now, thanks to another intrepid leaker, we have a new batch of high-resolution photos to obsess over, but the only part we care about with this current batch is:

Why the hell is there a teddy bear emoji on the camera interface?

The leak, which comes from AndroidMX, shows various up-close shots of the Galaxy S8+ in use (and, once again, not exploding). You can see a clear look at the home screen, and what looks like just about every settings menu (in Spanish), but the real gem is the shot of the camera interface. Read more...

Possibly evil mass death of zoo snakes leads to investigation

Nobody gives you the Harambe treatment when you have scales instead of fur.

That's what we're learning after Zoo Knoxville officials in Tennessee revealed that 33 snakes and a lizard were mysteriously found dead on Wednesday morning. No crime scene clues of note and no message from the killer, just a bunch of dead snakes.

And despite all the animal lovers out there, no one seems to raising all that much of a stink over the possibly non-accidental death of these innocent, slithering zoo residents, which included some endangered species.   Read more...

Carrie Fisher's memorial featured R2-D2 and James Blunt, of course

It was a show, not a memorial.

That's how Todd Fisher described the public service he organized for his sister Carrie Fisher and mom Debbie Reynolds in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Held at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, the event drew more than 1,200 friends and fans, or "extended family," as Fisher put it. Those who couldn't attend were able to watch online or follow along from a screen outside.

The event, held three months after Fisher and Reynolds' deaths and two months after their actual burial, was designed as a celebration rather than a somber memorial. Read more...

The difference in Jyn: How Felicity Jones became a badass for 'Rogue One'

This is a rebellion, isn't it? You need to be in shape to rebel.

As Rogue One's action hero Jyn Erso, Felicity Jones — an actress formerly known for cerebral dramas like The Theory of Everything — had to up her exercise game.

"This has been the most physical exercise I've done in my entire life," Jones said in an extra feature in the Rogue One Digital HD package, released Friday.

Director Gareth Edwards shot the Star Wars film documentary style, looking for spontaneous performances. Much of that involved deliberately throwing Jones off-balance to achieve a more natural look when she found her feet again. Read more...

Hey, Paul Ryan: Twitter thinks it's time to call your office

President Donald Trump is doing just great after the Republican healthcare bill failed to make it to a vote Friday, thank you so much.

No heads will roll for that humiliating defeat. Especially not the Just Cuts noggin of House Speaker Paul Ryan. It's all love and affection and onwards and upwards on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Gorgeous hand-colored photos capture Japan on the brink of modernity

Street minstrel, Gose.

Image: Metropolitan Museum of Art

In the 1850s and ‘60s, Japan gradually loosened the restrictions on foreign trade and visitors which had isolated it for centuries.

Western travelers and technologies began to flow in through a handful of ports, including Yokohama, where photographers such as Felice Beato opened studios to introduce photography to Japan.

Suzuki Shin’ichi was one of the first Japanese to take up the trade. He apprenticed in the studio of Yokohama photographer Shimooka Renjō, and in 1872 he was commissioned by Scottish publisher to J.R. Black to create a series of photos for The Far East, a magazine catering to expats in the burgeoning port city. Read more...

'The Hate U Give' is required reading for this American moment

To read The Hate U Give as a young black person is to stand in front of a mirror.

The No. 1 New York Times best-selling young adult novel that’s been swept up under the category of “Black Lives Matter” books is a true reflection of the life of a young person of color in America—and thank goodness, because there really hasn’t been a mirror like this for people to pore over, well, ever.

Angie Thomas’ debut novel (the title is drawn from a Tupac Shakur reference) brings us into the life of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old living in a predominately black neighborhood but going to high school in an affluent white one. She is battling issues that black kids everywhere recognize, from code switching to confronting racists to death's unfortunate and early knock.   Read more...

Blizzard remastered the original 'StarCraft' so you can game like it's 1998

Well that was unexpected.

StarCraft is coming back. Not as a sequel or as yet another expansion for StarCraft II. Instead, Blizzard Entertainment is cooking up a remaster of the 1998 original, with a spruced up 4K resolution sheen and an assortment of modern contrivances aimed at making it easier to play a 20-year-old game in 2017.

The re-release, titled StarCraft Remastered, will launch this summer. Functionally, it's meant to be the game you remember — none of the rules, mechanics, or any of the stuff that made StarCraft the gold standard of the real-time strategy genre will change. Read more...

6 things about adulthood that 'Kenan & Kel' did not adequately prepare me for

If you were raised in the '90s, it's not that far of a reach to say that television played a sizable role in your upbringing. Luckily for us '90s kids, we just happened to grow up with some of the best television in recent memory and everything seemed to have a specific life lesson embedded into its content.

For instance, Kenan & Kel was packed with life lessons. Whether it was "don't do drugs" or "Kel loves orange soda (LOL)," each episode seemed to hammer home a point about life. But there are just some things that, alas, it was unable to teach us.

'Westworld' boss reveals huge moment you probably missed in the Season 1 finale

Westworld won't be back on our screens until 2018 — so it's no surprise that the spoiler-averse showrunners, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, kept a lid on any details about Season 2 at the show's PaleyFest panel on Saturday night.

That didn't stop fans or the intrepid moderator from trying, of course: They grilled Nolan on everything from whether we'll see other theme parks in Season 2, like the previously teased Samurai World ("That'd be cool, wouldn't it?" Nolan coyly deflected), to whether Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) shot park creator Ford (Anthony Hopkins) in the Season 1 finale because she had developed her own consciousness, or simply because Arnold (Jeffrey Wright) had programmed her to. ("Isn't it more fun to just guess?" Nolan teased.) Read more...

Zombie Javier Bardem is NOT happy in the new 'Pirates' trailer

Here's a fun bit of triviaPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is actually the second longest title in the series. It falls one short of the 10-word mouthful that was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Javier Bardem is an angry ghost pirate in Disney's next Pirates adventure. If you're looking for a reason to go — any reason at all — there it is. The latest trailer peers into some of the backstory that turned Bardem's Captain Armando Salazar into a Jack Sparrow hater; believe it or not, it wasn't just Johnny Depp's drunken monkey antics.

These scientists turned spinach leaves into beating heart tissue

Popeye was fond of cramming cans of spinach to beef up his cartoon biceps. Now scientists say the leafy green really could help build a real-world muscle, only this time, it's the human heart.

A team of U.S. researchers found a way to use the veins of the spinach leaf to build a miniature version of a beating heart muscle.

Their discoveries offer a potential solution a major challenge confronting biomedical engineers: how to repair and regenerate damaged organs and tissues.

If proven to work, scientists could use the spinach treatment to grow layers of healthy heart muscle to treat heart attack patients, the group said in a proof-of-concept study published this month in the journal Biomaterials. Read more...

How one sleepy town spent Saturday afternoon in the Great Depression

Founded in 1762, the small city of Hagerstown, Maryland sits just south of the Mason-Dixon line and changed hands several times during the Civil War.

In October 1937, Farm Security Administration photographer Arthur Rothstein, in the course of his assignments covering everyday life across the country, passed through

He paused there for an afternoon, strolling the streets of the humble town, documenting the residents milling about on the main thoroughfare, chatting, shopping and attending an auction.

'Beauty' still a box office beast as 'Power Rangers' opens at #2

Another weekend, another pile of money for Disney.

Beauty and the Beast finishes its second weekend at the domestic box office with an estimated $88.3 million. It's another #1 weekend for the live-action remake of Disney's animated classic from 1991.

No one expected Beauty to come close to its debut, which clocked in at a record-setting $174.8 million. But don't read too deeply into the seemingly large 49 percent audience decline from the first weekend to the second. This is actually at the lower end of average for most Hollywood blockbusters. 'Power Rangers' fans are hyped about that credits scene—here's why

Like most geek-friendly blockbusters coming out of Hollywood these days, Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot sets up the sequel with a "stinger" — a scene inserted into the end credits.

That's what I'm here to fill you in on. Needless to say, spoilers ahead.

Midway through the credit roll we're treated to a familiar scene: our beloved heroes, fresh from saving the planet, are back in detention. A teacher calls the roll, but one student doesn't respond: Tommy Oliver.

As the teacher continues to call out the name with no response, the camera cuts to an empty desk. Slung over the chair behind it we can clearly see a green jacket. It doesn't take a super-fan to piece together the hint here: Tommy Oliver will one day be the Green Ranger. Read more...
