Ultimate Zelda superfan rigs smart home to respond to ocarina

Zelda fan Allen Pan has taken home automation to the next level.

Pan set up his home so that different automations are triggered when he plays tunes from the Nintendo 64 hit Zelda: Ocarina of Time on his own ocarina. It's amazing not just for the fan dedication, but for the amount of work that went into the project.

The video walks viewers through how Pan set the whole thing up, using note recognition, his own coding, and lots of wires.

But it's all worth it to unlock the front door with "Zelda's Lullaby" or water plants simply by piping out "Minuet of Forest."  Read more...

This fiery video captures Mount Etna's magical oozing lava

Italy's Mount Etna is still fired up. The Sicilian volcano has been spewing lava and belching ash on and off for nearly three months now.

After the latest eruption on March 16, fiery-hot lava began flowing down the volcano's slopes. The video shown above captures the flow only two days later.

But as Mount Etna reminded visitors, lava is best viewed from afar. The brilliant red lava recently caused an explosion when it hit snow on the mountainside, injuring 10 people and catching groups of tourists by surprise, the Associated Press reported. Read more...

Uber president Jeff Jones just went full on #DeleteUber and resigned: Recode

Different day, same tough times at Uber. Uber President Jeff Jones has quit, Recode reported Sunday. The decision to leave directly relates to Uber's last two months of PR hell, anonymous sources told Recode.

Uber didn't immediately respond to our request for comment on the sources' accusations in Recode's report. We'll update here if they do.

The straw that broke the camel's back, according to Recode, was CEO Travis Kalanick announcing his decision to hire a chief operating officer to help him put the ride-hailing giant back on track. It wasn't that Uber was looking hire another No. 2, according to these sources; instead, it seems to be the fact that a COO was necessary at all.  Read more...

Some LGBTQ+ videos are being filtered on YouTube and vloggers want answers

Several popular LGBTQ+ YouTube vloggers have claimed that YouTube is using the site's "restricted mode" to hide some of their videos, according to Gizmodo.

The restricted mode for YouTube, according to Google, enables users to filter out "potentially objectionable content," leading some LGBTQ+ vloggers to accuse YouTube of implicitly categorizing their material as not "family-friendly."

That's the complaint British vlogger Rowan Ellis made to Gizmodo, saying, “there is a bias somewhere within that process equating LGBT+ with ‘not family friendly.’”

Ellis posted her own video addressing the issue after she found dozens of her videos fell victim to the process.  Read more...

This crazy buzzer-beater from 70 feet doesn't even make sense

I've seen a lot of buzzer-beaters over the years, but this is might be the best ever.

I mean, look at this shot from Destiny Slocum.

She shoots from 70 feet out with seconds left in the half ... with two hands over her head like a damn soccer throw-in. I didn't even know that was a thing. Let's see Steph Curry try to match that.

Destiny's Maryland Terrapins went on to beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 83-56 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA women's tournament.

These parents left a camera on their twins. What happened next is beyond cute.

Children will do whatever the heck they want, whenever the heck they want. That's the lesson these parents learned when they took a look at some home security footage and saw their twin toddler boys sneak out of their cribs and play in the middle of the night.

Andrew and Ryan Balkin are twin 2-year-old boys, and they have plenty of fun when their parents turn off the lights. They even do a little cleaning up after themselves afterwards.

But there's no getting around Mom and Dad, who bust them good, eventually.

What could the two be chatting about while they lay side-by-side on the love seat?  Read more...

Curious about the Samsung Galaxy S8? Let us direct you to all the leaks, leaks, and leaks.

We're just over one week away from the actual launch of the flagship smartphone, and still, the leaks keep coming.

On Sunday, mobile reporter Evan Blass shared some purported front and profile images of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in colors he called "black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver."

Past clues suggested the phone would also come in violet, so is that what's meant by "orchid grey?" We'll have to wait and see.

Adele's goofy attempt at dancing like Beyoncé in 'Crazy In Love' is all of us

Adele really can't dance Beyoncé, but whatever, she'll try anyway.

It's all part of the goofy charm that's seen Adele make a massive fan out of the whole Australian continent, where her tour concluded on the weekend.

The English singer took a few moments to praise a Melbourne audience member on Sunday night, because the wind blowing through her hair made her look like Bey in the "Crazy In Love" video.

"Gimmie a beat!" she said, trying to emulate her idol's moves, and adorably failing. "I don't know how she does it," Adele told the crowd. Heck, nobody does.  Read more...

'I stand with you': Katy Perry's emotional speech for LGBTQ equality

Quinoa Queen and pop icon Katy Perry gave a powerful account of her past struggles with her sexuality in a speech for the Human Rights Campaign Gala on Saturday night.

Accepting the National Equality Award, Perry told the audience that as a young person she would "pray the gay away" at Christian conversion camps.

"My first words were Momma and Poppa, God and Satan," she told the crowd of LGBTQ community members and allies. "Right and wrong were taught to me on felt boards … When I was growing up, homosexuality was synonymous with the word abomination."

She told the audience: "I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite size pop songs. For instance, 'I kissed a girl and I liked it.' Truth be told — a) I did more than that, but b) how was I going to reconcile that with a gospel singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps?" Read more...

'Neighbours' might disappear from UK screens, and the Brits are furious

It's a widely-known, weird fact that British people love Australian soap operas more than Australians do. Especially Neighbours.

The series, which has been airing in the UK for over 30 years, could be pulled from UK screens completely. And Brits on the internet seem very unhappy about it. So unhappy, they're petitioning and tweeting up a storm.

Aside from kick-starting the careers of Australian celebrities like Margot Robbie and Kylie Minogue, Neighbours is an unashamedly dorky staple of television on both side of the Atlantic.  Read more...

'Mass Effect: Andromeda' is a forgettable, tedious trudge

Mass Effect: Andromeda really blows it.

BioWare had an opportunity to reinvent its homegrown sci-fi series with this game. We're five years removed now from Mass Effect 3. All that controversy around the game's ending — which a pressured BioWare eventually altered in its "Extended Cut" DLC — is in the past.

It hasn't been long enough, apparently.

Mass Effect: Andromeda's story takes no chances. The choices you make have meaning in the moment, but few lasting consequences. You never have to decide, for example, which crew member to sacrifice or how to go about keeping everyone alive during a suicide mission. It's always a more clinical "this or that." Read more...

This dictionary has found a brutal way to catch cheating students

Teachers of the world, unite!

An online Romanian dictionary has found a brilliant though slightly cruel way to deal with cheaters at exams.

During a mock test for the National Evaluation last year, the DEX online dictionary noticed a spike in searches for certain words, arising fears that Grade 8 students were using it to cheat.

So this year, during the same preparation exam, they did something radical: they took the three most-searched words and altered the definitions for each one.

The word "pretutindeni" means "everywhere" but anyone looking up for the word between 9 and 11am last Monday would have found it defined as "eternal or forever," according to the DEX online administrators.  Read more...

Stunt SUV pulls a 'Transformer' and gets around gridlock

Some people build tunnels to deal with traffic, others reinvent the car.

Hum Rider is that vehicular reinvention and, perhaps, the answer to all your traffic congestion frustration. It looks like a standard Jeep Cherokee Wagon SUV, but when it gets stuck in traffic, the car body can lift up, the wheel base widens and then the car can drive right over other bumper-to-bumper- cars.

It's really a shame that this cool, smart idea is is just a very well-executed marketing  stunt.

Thinkmodo (best known for its Devil Baby viral video) cooked up the concept to promote Verizon Telematic's Hum platform. Hum comprises of a dongle that plugs into the OBD port on any car made after 1996 and a Bluetooth speaker. It adds diagnostics, road-side assistance, location and speed tracking and geo-fencing. Verizon's hardware costs $29 and the monthly service costs $10 a month. Read more...

The ultimate clap back: Richard Spencer got owned on Twitter over a song from 'Cabaret'

People are still looking for reasons to clap back at alt-righter Richard Spencer and, over the weekend, he set himself up for a great one.

Spencer, who leads a movement that mixes racism, white nationalism and populism, was engaged in a Twitter scrape with Talking Points Memo editor Josh Marshall, which itself had branched off from a brief Twitter spat with Bloomberg columnist Eli Lake.

Marshall slammed Spencer as "a Nazi and a stain on this country's greatness." Spencer responded with a snide reference to a bizarre tweet Marshall sent out in December, which criticized the incoming Trump administration with a tweet containing porn.  Read more...

LGBTQ 'Power Rangers' lead is a first for a mainstream superhero movie

Power Rangers may be based on an old property, but it's breaking new ground.

The upcoming reboot features a character who's being touted as the first LGBTQ protagonist in a big-budget superhero movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second act features a scene in which Trini (the Yellow Ranger, played by Becky G) is having trouble with her love life. One character assumes she's talking about "boyfriend problems" before realizing she's actually referring to "girlfriend problems."

Speaking to the publication, director Dean Israelite described the scene as a "pivotal" one that ties into the film's overall themes: Read more...

People are up in arms over the new Wonder Woman's armpits

Gal Gadot has a number of extraordinary scenes in the trailer for the upcoming film Wonder Woman. As the lead superhero, she is fierce and brilliant while discovering her powers, fighting in the woods and stopping bullets effortlessly.

But there's one moment in particular has everyone talking...and it's probably not what anyone in the DC universe expected to be discussing. In the trailer, Gadot is seen lifting a car, hurling it down a street—only her armpits, and lack of armpit hair, is the moment that stood out to many fans.

John Oliver lists the biggest 'f*ck you' funding cuts in Trump's budget

Last week, President Trump unveiled his new budget proposal for the federal government.

John Oliver took the time on Sunday's Last Week Tonight to break down exactly what's in the proposal, and explored what that actually means for Americans.

The biggest takeaway is, of course, that many departments and programs will be losing funding. Some of the cuts in the budget actually affect places that voted for Trump the most. Oliver explains that the budget was directed by Mick Mulvaney, who created it by somehow culling policy from incoherent statements Trump has made throughout his campaign.

Spoiler alert: Trump rally speeches do not make good policy. Read more...

A Backstreet Boy named his new baby 'Lyric,' obviously

Sigh. Another celebrity baby has fallen victim to the undying weird name trend.

The Backstreet Boys' A.J. McLean and his wife Rochelle welcomed their second daughter on Sunday, March 19. And they named the baby girl Lyric Dean McLean.

Yep, of course a singer in a '90s boy band named his daughter "Lyric" because we all know how meaningful and deep words are in pop songs. Also, her middle and last name kind of rhyme so that's... something.

Little Lyric weighed in at eight pounds, three ounces and measured 22-inches long. She joins her 4-year-old sister Ava Jaymes in this "Larger Than Life" family.   Read more...

FBI director: There's 'no information' to support Trump wiretapping tweets

FBI Director James Comey believes President Donald Trump tweets unsubstantiated information.

Earlier this month, Trump fired off a series of tweets accusing former President Barack Obama of wiretapping him during the 2016 presidential campaign. Comey searched for such information, but found none.

"I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI," Comey said Monday. He then confirmed that the Department of Justice didn't have any proof of those accusations either.  Read more...

Reviewers find Dave Chappelle still at the top of the game in new Netflix specials

12 years is a long time to be out of the game, but Dave Chappelle would never forget how to play. Though he hasn't recorded a live special in over a decade, Chappelle has toured and used footage from recent performances in his new Netflix specials.

In "The Age of Spin" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas" (both folded into one Dave Chappelle listing on Netflix), reviewers say he's true to his comedy origins as critical observer, provocateur, and of course, wildly funny.

This guy made a genius dating résumé, and everyone wants to go out with him

We have résumés to get jobs, so why not use them for dates too?

That's just what one very smart college kid has done, and he's fast becoming America's most wanted man. Last week, Joe Adams, a junior at Michigan State University, was tagged in a post in a Facebook group. Someone in his class was helping their roommate find a date to a formal, and Adams realized this was his chance.

He commented on the post with an enthusiastic "I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT," and added his dating résumé. It's really more of a work of art.

Image: joe adams

It's similar to a professional résumé, in that he lays out his education and career info—he's a lubricants consultant, which he is careful to explain is "not a euphemism." He lists his skills (crying during Marley & Me, replying to long texts) and some "moderately interesting" personal factoids ("has never lost a Snapchat streak," "makes great small talk with parents"). He even gives a detailed breakdown of how he spends his time ("academic grind," "Facetiming with my mom"). Are you googling him yet? Read more...

Here's why everyone's obsessed with that Missing Richard Simmons podcast

In the past few weeks Missing Richard Simmons has shot up the charts — the podcast charts. It's turning into a Serial-level obsession, but this time everyone's talking about an aging fitness guru.

Spoiler alert, Simmons isn't actually missing in the "call 911 and put up posters with his picture" sense. It's more that his presence is missing from charity events, TV appearances, workout sessions, social events, videos, social media, the internet — everywhere.  Read more...

Food blogger creates Easter egg made of the most delicious substance in the world

Ugh, whatever, chocolate is fine. But why does it have to dominate all the major holidays? Can't the savory fans among us get some love?

Food blogger Annem Hobson is sick to death of chocolate being the center of attention. She's created the ultimate Easter egg—they're called "Cheester Eggs"—to give chocolate Easter treats a run for their money. They're made from a solid block of cheese. And, unlike chocolate Easter eggs, these eggs aren't hollow in the middle

Cheester Eggs are made in collaboration with independent artisan cheese company Wildes Cheese from a "specially devised, unique recipe" using unhomogenized cow's milk and vegetarian rennet. It's based on the company's Napier cheese—a crumbly, hard cheese with a creamy texture and slightly sharp flavor.  Read more...

You now have some extra time to buy AppleCare+ for your iPhone, you klutz

Good news for all you clumsy Apple lovers out there: You now have a little bit longer to take the plunge to insure your shiny new iPhone.

Apple just extended the window for iPhone owners to opt-in to AppleCare+ coverage from 60 days after buying their phone to a full year after purchase. The insurance package gives enrollees two years of hardware repair coverage and technical support, along with two prorated repairs for "accidental damage" like cracked screens.

The plan itself isn't changing at all — it still costs $129, with repair premiums of $29 for screen damage and $99 for anything else you might need fixed if you really thrash your phone. The extension brings the iPhone's protection plan in line with those offered for AppleTV and Macs, which are also available to owners for a full year after purchase.  Read more...

'Mass Effect: Andromeda' reviews are in: Bad game is bad

No one wanted a bad Mass Effect game, but the universe had other plans.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is here, and BioWare's five-years-later return to the gleaming sci-fi RPG series is... a little disappointing. I sure didn't like it.

Let me set the stage: Mass Effect is BioWare's homegrown take on Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and other "space opera" storiesAndromeda takes the series to a new galaxy — literally — picking up 600 years and millions of light-years away.

The major alien races of the Milky Way sent an exploration force off to colonize a new galaxy, and you — as the "Pathfinder" — are the vanguard. If you're familiar with other BioWare RPGs, Mass Effect is very similar, it just has more laser guns. Read more...

Why using voice recognition to identify refugees is controversial

Northwestern's crying young fan is all of us watching our brackets get busted

March Madness can be absolutely brutal.

At the end of the day, only one team is going to earn the national title. This means 63 sets of hopes and dreams will get crushed along the way.

Northwestern's journey through the madness was the program's best ever, considering they've never made it to the NCAA tournament before. But the road ended on Saturday when Northwestern fell to top-seeded Gonzaga 79-73.

While the loss was sad, it became gut-wrenching after a controversial call by the game's officials. Northwestern was in the midst of a game-changing scoring run when a dunk was blocked by Gonzaga. Very brave leopards take on a giant python in an intense battle

Kiernan Shipka reveals the biggest difference between 'Feud' and 'Mad Men'

The apple, as far as acting talent, actually fell pretty far from the tree back in 1962, when the tree was Bette Davis and the apple was her aspiring-starlet daughter B.D.

Fortunately, Feud found an accomplished actress with the meta-skills to merely act like she was acting badly in Kiernan Shipka, who got her big break at age eight on AMC's Mad Men.

Now 17, Shipka is one of the leading actresses of her generation, but as B.D.’s story reveals, not every wannabe star’s path to success is as clear as Shipka’s, even when they’re Hollywood royalty.

In order to keep a streak going, you've got to send a Snap back and forth to a friend within a 24-hour window. And, yes, you've got to do it every. Single. Day. Read more...

Natalie Portman's unborn baby is the star of James Blake's new video

2017 is truly a banner year for underwater maternity shoots. Thanks for kicking that off, Beyoncé.

Natalie Portman swirls around underwater in (Bey collaborator) James Blake's new video for "My Willing Heart." According to a press release, the moody clip — this is, after all, a James Blake video — was shot "just days" before Portman gave birth to her second child.

Amalia Millepied, whose dad choreographed Black Swan, seems fully prepared to embrace the family business and offers a couple elegant kicks for the camera.  Read more...

Gorgeous video takes you on a trip above Mars

At the moment, NASA and other space agencies are operating satellites in orbit around Mars. The spacecraft are continuing to beam amazing images of the red planet's surface back to Earth, and some of the probes have even solved Martian mysteries in the process.

But what would it look like if you were up in space, flying above Mars yourself?

A beautiful new video making use of a high-resolution camera orbiting Mars aboard a NASA spacecraft shows you just that.

"I would love to see images taken by a landscape photographer on Mars, especially from the polar regions. But I'm afraid I won't see that kind of image during my lifetime," Jan Fröjdman, the creator of the video said in a description. Read more...

College students stage buzzer beater that's almost more thrilling than actual March Madness

We just found the technical definition of "one shining moment."

In a humble little classroom at UNC Charlotte, one group of students pulled off the ultimate no-look, over-the-shoulder crumpled paper toss of March Madness. And the crowd goes wild.

It's unclear how many times this stunt was tried before it actually worked, but the celebration afterwards is absolutely and deservedly insane, just like after a real buzzer beater. The overlay audio of a real commentator from a past tournament losing his mind during buzzer beater makes for the perfect finishing touch. Read more...

FBI director tries to help congressman understand how elections work

Ralph Nader notwithstanding, presidential elections in the United States pretty much come down to two people. There's a Republican candidate and a Democratic one. That's how it works. When one wins, the other one loses. The Oval Office has one chair behind the desk.

You get the idea, because you are a person able to compute ideas like "if I win that means someone else loses." FBI Director James Comey is also a person able to compute such an idea. Rep. Mike Conaway was not such a person on Monday. Perhaps he did not eat breakfast.

Zoo sues advertising agency for using raccoon in 'erotic' video

A petting zoo in Russia claims to be suing an advertising agency that used their raccoon Thomas to film an "erotic" television advert.

Last August, the Teatr Zoo in Moscow, Russia, rented Thomas out to the advertising company Art-Msk.

They've since said in an Instagram post that they weren't warned about the nature of the video, which featured a semi-naked model holding Thomas while sitting on a hotel bed.

Teatr Zoo said they only became aware of this after seeing photos from the shoot shared online last August. Read more...

YouTube apologizes for hidden LGBTQ videos

After several popular LGBTQ vloggers like Rowan Ellis and Tyler Oakley said YouTube was incorrectly censoring their videos using its "Restricted Mode," the site has addressed the error and finally offered an apology to those impacted.

On Monday afternoon, the YouTube Creators Twitter account released a short statement apologizing for the "confusion" users were experiencing with the site's Restricted Mode — a feature that allows users to filter out "potentially objectionable content," according to Google.

YouTube Creators admitted that several videos were incorrectly labeled on the site, which led to them being hidden. Furthermore, the account admitted that the error was "not right" and explained they are working to address the problem.  Read more...

This could change the way you use live videos on Instagram

Instagram just made a pretty significant change to its live videos. While live videos will continue to disappear from the app after the stream ends, broadcasters can now opt to save the clips to their camera roll.

In the past, people may have been discouraged from live streaming via Instagram since they wouldn't be able to keep the videos after their broadcast had ended. This move could encourage the app's more influential users to take advantage of Instagram's live streaming abilities.

With the update, which is out now on iOS and Android, a "save" button will appear in the top right corner of the app after you finish a live video. Read more...

Here's how DJ Khaled could manage his Snapchat Stories AND his Instagram Stories

Snapchat's far from the only app with 24-hour Stories these days. Facebook released Instagram Stories, Messenger Day, WhatsApp Stories and Facebook Stories

The struggle of which ten-second video to post and where to post it is so real (for celebrities, social media "influencers," and the rest of us garden-variety narcissists). That's why entrepreneurs Sebastian Dobrincu and Jordan Gonen created Storyheap, a platform for uploading stories to both Snapchat and Instagram, and visualizing analytics.

The entrepreneurs were inspired, in part, by Facebook's big push in Snapchat-like features. "With Facebook involving so heavily in the stories market recently, we are sure that this is the new gold mine for influencers and brands to reach wider audiences. Stories are the new newsfeed," Dobrincu told me via Twitter DM.  Read more...

The country where people devour pasta, wine and olive oil is the world's healthiest. Really.

Special shout-out to my octogenarian cousins still living it up in the Italian hillside.

The Mediterranean nation was ranked the world's healthiest country in the Bloomberg Global Health Index

The index, released on Monday, graded 163 countries based on variables such as life expectancy, causes of death and health risks such as high blood pressure, malnutrition, the availability of clean water and tobacco use.

Italians are in better shape than their peers in other developed nations, with lower blood pressure and cholesterol, Bloomberg found. Those two factors are likely attributed to the classic Italian diet that's rich in vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, lean meats and fish (and so, so many carbs).  Read more...

Tbh, this dog really is the employee of the year, and we quit

There are good dogs and then there are really good dogs. And when you have one of the latter—especially a really good, hardworking, business-minded kind of dog—you'd better appreciate it.

Michael Reeg's Meeka is one such canine. After Reeg started working from home in his job as district sales manager with the equipment supplier Accuride, he realized just how committed Meeka was to making sure he was never lonely when on the grind.

"I remember looking at her lying in my office, which she did faithfully every day, and thinking about how happy she was when I was home and how excited she was when I said, 'Let's go to work,'" Reeg told us. "It struck me that she deserved to be rewarded for her consistent attendance and enjoyment for that quarter." Read more...

6 persistent phone charging myths, debunked

Charging your phone should be easy — just plug it in and forget about it. Unfortunately, there's a lot of bad advice out there that is actually doing more harm than good.

Let's debunk it, shall well?

First, a note about exploding phones: Almost all smartphones these days use lithium-ion batteries, and yes, those batteries have been known to blow up occasionally. The thing is, the dangerous batteries — at least in the widely publicized case of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 — were a result of too-small battery cases and manufacturing problems.
