After United Airlines incident, women share stories of being shamed for their clothing

In response to United Airline's legging-gate, women are speaking out.

Two young girls wearing leggings were banned from a flight on Sunday morning due to a violation of the airline's internal dress code. The situation, which was live-tweeted by activist Shannon Watts, sparked outrage from thousands on social media who called out the company for policing the girls' attire.

Author Dana Schwartz was one of those that spoke out against United Airlines, and asked women on Twitter to share their stories of feeling "embarrassed" or "sexualized" for the first time because of what they wore.

Now that SXSW is over, here was, for sure, my favorite part

SXSW is 10 days of fun. Many of colleagues (I see you Brett Williams) teased me (on Slack) for having a "great time with all the work down there."

But, hey, it's actually work. Attending panel after panel, speaking on your own panels, BBQ after BBQ, happy hour after happy hour isn't easy — no matter how fun it looks from everyone's Snapchat (or Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Facebook) Stories.

When I came back, and even during the whole ordeal, I found my favorite part to be the 45 minutes that I spent away from all the hullabaloo. It was the cycling class I participated with Foursquare and CYC on Monday, the midway point in my SXSW journey.  Read more...

Meet the woman behind 'Feud's' most fascinating character

You’d have to possess a pretty colorful character, not to mention some serious acting chops, to steal scenes away from Jessica Lange while she's channeling screen diva Joan Crawford. Fortunately, Jackie Hoffman has both.

From the moment she makes her first appearance in Feud: Bette and Joan, you can’t take your eyes off Hoffman’s tightly-wound but infinitely patient Mamacita — Crawford’s sternly Teutonic live-in housekeeper, valet, mother confessor and all around Gal Friday, who is never far from the movie star’s side and always faithfully and fiercely on her side, even when Crawford believes no one else is. Aaron Sorkin is just now discovering there's a diversity problem in Hollywood

Despite working in the industry for over 20 years, Aaron Sorkin apparently didn't realize white men had an easier time in Hollywood.

The Academy Award-winning screenwriter and executive producer of “The West Wing” and “The Newsroom” was at the Writers Guild Festival on Saturday, and was reportedly fixated on the issue of diversity in Hollywood—a topic he shockingly didn't seem to have ever mulled over before.

“Are you saying that women and minorities have a more difficult time getting their stuff read than white men and you’re also saying that [white men] get to make mediocre movies and can continue on?," Sorkin asked audience members, reported to Variety Read more...

Orca shows on the rise in China because humans just can't leave whales alone

SeaWorld is winding down its killer whale shows and breeding programs in the United States, earning resounding applause from animal welfare groups. But as marine parks wither in America, they're flourishing in China, sparking fresh concerns about captive orcas in Asia.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, the largest aquarium in China, recently debuted killer whales at the facility in Zhuhai, a city known as "China's Orlando." Trainers there swim with the black-and-white whales, while beluga whales put on dramatic shows.

Chimelong is one of 44 ocean theme parks operating throughout China, with 18 more scheduled to open soon — a 20 percent jump in just two years, USA Today reported on Sunday.  Read more...

Fake VHS ad for Star Wars 'Rogue One' looks straight out of the '70s

Celebrities are weighing in on the United Airlines legging mess

EPA chief calls historic climate treaty a 'bad deal' because this is our life now

The Trump administration has made no secret of its plans to dismantle the climate policies of former President Barack Obama.

But what Trump officials bring in fervor, they sometimes lack in understanding.

Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), railed against the Paris Climate Agreement in an interview with ABC News on Sunday. He called the landmark climate change accord a "bad deal" that unfairly penalizes the United States, while giving a free pass to other major polluting countries.

UK targets WhatsApp and encrypted messaging after London attack

The UK government wants there to be "no place for terrorists to hide," and that includes on encrypted messaging services. The company first on its agenda? WhatsApp.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Home Secretary Amber Rudd called for companies that provide secure communication apps to work with law enforcement.

"We need to make sure that organisations like WhatsApp, and there are plenty of others like that, don't provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other," she said.

"It used to be that people would steam open envelopes or listen in on phones when they wanted to find out what people were doing, legally, through warrantry [sic]. But in this situation, we need to make sure that our intelligence services have the ability to get into situations like encrypted WhatsApp." Read more...

This 'Call of Duty: WWII' rumor is more legit than you realize

It's time to shoot Nazis again, apparently.

The annual Call of Duty hasn't been announced yet, but a set of allegedly leaked photos suggests the new game will return to an old setting: the second World War. The same military conflict that was at the center of the first three Call of Duty games, as well as 2008's World at War.

The mystery begins with a series of posts shared across multiple subreddits — including WWII, CallOfDuty, and CoDCompetitive — all linking back to an Imgur page. The images shared there appear to be either photos or mock-ups of a poster and a SteelBook-style case for a game titled Call of Duty: WWII. Read more...

'The Walking Dead' is going to war in the Season 7 finale

This recap contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7, episode 15, titled "Something They Need."

Season 7 of The Walking Dead has been a lot of hurry up and wait: First, we were waiting for Rick to hurry up and grow a pair so he could take the fight back to Negan, while we spent eight depressing episodes watching our heroes being emotionally and physically tortured by a handsome schoolyard bully with a penchant for monologuing.

Now that Rick has grown said pair and decided to "rise up," as the show's posters proudly proclaim, we're waiting for the gang to hurry up and fight the bully, already. While the last seven episodes have featured some impressive action sequences, for the most part, the show has been spinning its wheels since the midseason premiere — doing everything it can to delay the group's inevitable confrontation with the Saviors.  Read more...

There's also the briefest shot of the Vulture – the big bad villain played by former Batman Michael Keaton. As Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts explained to USA Today, he's part of a crew tasked with cleaning up the destruction that all of these Marvel superhero battles leave in their wake.  Read more...

Mother's Day has caused a bunch of Americans to panic big time

OK, there's good news and there's bad news.

The bad news is that if you didn't call your mum yesterday, you did indeed miss Mother's Day.

The good news is it only matters if you're from the UK.

Basically, Sunday, March 26, was Mother's Day in Britain. Mother's Day in the U.S., on the other hand, isn't until Sunday 14 May.

From the looks of all the confused Americans on Twitter, though, quite a few people didn't realise they were on different dates:

Why do British people have a different Mother's Day to us?? I was so confused I thought I forgot and didn't give my mum anything 😂😳😄

A new update will finally kill the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 once and for all

The last remaining Galaxy Note 7 phones that haven't been returned will finally be put out of their misery.

Samsung's planning to issue a software update that'll disable remaining Note 7 phones from charging at all, according to a report from Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung will reportedly push the update out later this month, and it will cripple the remaining 3-4 percent of Note 7 phones still in use worldwide, mostly in South Korea.

Earlier this year, Samsung said 97 percent of Note 7 devices had been recalled in the U.S. and 96 percent worldwide. Read more...

Terrorists wanting to hide explosives in an iPad is one reason behind laptop ban

The recently introduced rule that prohibits some electronics devices from passenger cabins on flights originating from certain countries was prompted, among other reasons, by a plot to hide explosives in a fake iPad.

According to a Guardian report, which cites a security source, there was more than one reason why the laptop ban — as it's often called — was introduced in the U.S. and the UK last week. But a plot that aimed to bring down a plane with a fake iPad stuffed with explosives sparked fears that Islamist extremists have found a new way to bring explosives on board.

10 burning questions we need answered in 'Game of Thrones' Season 7

This is usually the time of year when Game of Thrones kicks off to distract us from real life with dragons, wargs and gratuitous sex and blood. Sadly, that carnage will have to wait for July 16, but until then we've got some burning questions about what Season 7 has in store.

1. Will Arya rejoin her family?

A girl is fed the fuck up.

10 movie adaptations that totally didn't suck

Ah, books, the original movies.

From fairytales and folklore to YA and graphic novels, written (and drawn) stories have inspired Hollywood for years. The upcoming Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson, made some serious miscalculations in casting, but its original manga series captivated fans around the world. Instead of that mediocre sample, we picked 10 of our favorite page-to-screen movie adaptations — films worthy of their stellar source material.

Holes

Louis Sachar's novel about a boy sent to dig holes in lieu of juvenile detention is a genius novel. We have our protagonist, Stanley Yelnats, his mysterious new friend Zero and the lost boys of Camp Green Lake — and then we have the story of 19th century outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow and wonder how these worlds could possibly meet. The 2003 film stayed true to the book's twisting connections and clever details and also dropped a dope beat. Read more...

Boom believes the future of jet travel is supersonic

Jet startup Boom believes the future is supersonic, and it's now got enough money to prove it.

The company announced on Thursday that it raised $33 million for its first major round of funding, enough for the company to build a demonstrator of its XB-1 supersonic aircraft.

Boom first emerged in 2016 with grand plans to create supersonic passenger jets that could reach 1,450 miles per hour. The company hopes to test its XB-1 demonstrator in 2017, with commercial flights still a few years away.

That aircraft will be one-third the size of the passenger aircraft that Boom hopes to eventually build. The XB-1 "will demonstrate in flight the key technologies for practical supersonic travel" — essentially proving that the company's technology and design can make supersonic flights safe and efficient.  Read more...

The secret weapon that will make your next computer super fast

Intel isn't down with that. On Monday, the chip maker announced the ship date for Optane, a memory module that can change the data game. It takes the speed and fluidity of RAM and combines it with the storage capabilities of Flash memory.

"Storage needs dramatically increased over the last several years," said Intel Client Computing Group SVP Navin Shenoy who caught up with me to explain why Optane  (unveiled at CES 2017) is a potential game-changer for computer users. Read more...

The world's largest dinosaur tracks have been found, and a human can fit in them

Scientists have discovered some of the world's largest dinosaur tracks—measuring as long as the average person is tall—in western Australia.

The 5.5-foot-long tracks likely belonged to a long-necked, small-headed sauropod. They're part of an unusually diverse array of dinosaur tracks imprinted into the rocks on Australia's Dampier Peninsula.

Paleontologists from the University of Queensland and James Cook University recently identified 21 different types of tracks on the 16-mile stretch of coastline. Rocks in the Kimberley region date back to 127 million to 140 million years ago, the team said in a new study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.  Read more...

How to decapitate annoying 'Chat Heads' in Facebook Messenger

You never have to be interrupted by your friend's floating head again.

Chat Heads were introduced several years ago on Facebook Messenger for Android. The feature uses profile pictures of the people you're talking to on Messenger as shortcuts for the chat—they pop up on your screen, regardless of what you're doing, and invite you to tap into the conversation.

While the feature can be useful sometimes, it's mostly just in the way when you're doing something else on your phone.

Messenger also has a feature that lets you directly reply from your notification bar when you need to, so the Chat Heads are frankly a bit superfluous—and again, annoying. But they're still on by default. Read more...

Paper artist transforms historical landmarks into silly scenes

What if the Colosseum was invaded by a giant octopus squirming its legs in and out of the columns? Or how would the statue of David look in a pair of boxers?

London-based paper artist and photographer Rich McCor, who goes by "Paperboyo," looks at landmarks and statues like these, and uses paper to reimagine them in fun and silly ways.

Have you ever heard of the word naumachia? Until I got to Rome I hadn’t either, but it’s a word the Romans used to describe simulated naval fights - they were like gladiator battles on a bigger and wetter scale. Sometimes special structures were built and other times lakes were used, but there is evidence that the colosseum was once turned into a gladiatorial water world for a naumachia (the more you say that word, the more addictive it becomes). According to the Roman historian Cassius Dio, a sea fight took place in the amphitheatre in 86 AD. Ships, weapons and thousands of men were brought in and since every effort was made to make a naumachia (I bet you’re saying it out loud now) a colossal event, even sea creatures were shipped in from around the globe - hence why I put an octopus inside the colosseum, because y’know when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Time to hop back on board Royal Princess and head up the coast to the port of Livorno to visit Florence. (Head to @princesscruises to see more images) #comebacknew Read more...

Powerful Cyclone Debbie is not a typical storm

Cyclone Debbie is nearing landfall along the Queensland coast, threatening to cause significant destruction in iconic tourist destinations like the Whitsunday Islands. The storm will likely be the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the country since Cyclone Yasi hit in 2011. That storm caused $3.6 billion in damage.

As of 11 a.m. ET, Cyclone Debbie had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour, or 108 miles per hour, with gusts to 155 kilometers per hour. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast the storm to continue to intensify as it approaches the coast, with the center crossing the coast between Ayr and Cape Hillsborough on Tuesday morning, local time. Strong winds and heavy rain will be felt all the way north to the city of Townsville, the BOM warned.  Read more...

Facebook's 'Town Hall' is probably the best thing the social network has ever done

Reddit user created a mind-blowing theory to fill a big 'Beauty and the Beast' plot hole

It's a theory as old as time.

The live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast has stayed true to the source material for the most part. But, the movie does contain some new twists and turns in order to distinguish itself from its cartoon predecessor.

Warning: if you haven't seen the movie already there are minor spoilers ahead.

At the end film it is revealed that the cursed servants of Beast's castle actually have some long lost family members living in the village like Mrs. Potts' husband and Cogsworth's wife. We learn at the beginning of the movie that it has been at least 10 years since the curse had been placed on Beast and his servants and, while the curse doesn't allow them to age, it seems unlikely that their family members would stay the same age as well. 'Moonlight' director Barry Jenkins' next project is about the Underground Railroad

Amazon Studios just landed Barry Jenkins' next big project.

The Moonlight director will write and direct a one-hour original limited drama, The Underground Railroad, for the streaming service.

The drama will be adapted from Colson Whitehead's novel — a recent MashRead Choice — of the same name.

The book follows a girl named Cora as she escapes a Georgia plantation for the rumored Underground Railroad.

“Going back to The Intuitionist, Colson’s writing has always defied convention, and The Underground Railroad is no different,” Jenkins said in a statement. “It’s a groundbreaking work that pays respect to our nation’s history while using the form to explore it in a thoughtful and original way. Preserving the sweep and grandeur of a story like this requires bold, innovative thinking and in Amazon we’ve found a partner whose reverence for storytelling and freeness of form is wholly in line with our vision.”  Read more...

NATO stocks up on data-sucking surveillance drones

NATO wants more data-sucking surveillance drones.

The alliance is buying five Global Hawk surveillance drones, according to The Wall Street Journal. They'll be based in Italy, and the first one will begin flying around either later this year or early next.

While it's a bit unclear how those surveillance drones will be used, there is a chance they will be deployed in Eastern Europe. NATO has recently sent more troops to places such as Poland, as Russian-backed separatists continue to battle Ukrainian troops in Ukraine. Surveillance drones are often used to monitor the locations of troops or anything of interest, and could — theoretically — help NATO gather information along the alliance's border with Russia, whose government detests NATO.  Read more...

An Uber spokesperson told Mashable shortly after the news broke that the program was being paused while the company looked into the incident.

Lynda Carter is the POTUS we need in 'Supergirl'

Supergirl has made an art form out of stunt casting — former Super-alums Dean Cain and Helen Slater play our heroine's adoptive parents, for crying out loud — but perhaps its greatest achievement was tapping Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, as the President of the United States.

We haven't seen much of Carter's President Marsdin since she was introduced in episode 203, but she makes a welcome return in the March 27 installment of the CW hit — and Mashable has an exclusive sneak peek.

In our first look at episode 217, "Distant Sun," the POTUS is a little concerned by the Daxamite ship that's still lurking in low orbit above Earth but in the interests of not causing an intergalactic incident, she's hoping to take a more measured approach to National City's latest alien visitors, and keep conflict to a minimum. We'll just have to wait and see if Mon-El's icy parents (played by Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo, because this show is perfect) are on the same page.  Read more...

Snapchat desperately wants businesses to pay for geofilters

Snapchat needs to make more money, sure. But even more than that, the now-public company needs to attract more advertisers — even to its lower cost ad options — in hopes of turning them into big spenders and cementing the app as a must-buy digital ad platform.

To do so, Snapchat is turning to one of its oldest tools: Geofilters.

The app, once primarily heralded for its sexting capabilities, is in a need of cash and attention amid its growth period less than a month after going public. How it's doing that — beyond inking deals with the world's biggest entertainment studios — is convincing businesses that they should fork over a few hundred dollars per year and make an annual commitment to have geofilters on the app.  Read more...

When you're up nursing at 3 a.m., this chatbot is definitely not your friend

Nursing a baby at 3 a.m. – especially when it's not going well – can lead you down a Google rabbit hole. When all you want is for your baby to stop crying so you can both get back to sleep, getting hold of reliable and relevant information as soon as possible is vital

In an effort to help new out new nursing parents at exactly this dark hour, Public Health England (PHE) has launched an interactive Facebook Messenger chatbot to encourage longer breastfeeding relationships.

In a blog post announcing the chatbot, PHE chief executive Duncan Selbie said the UK has the lowest rate of breastfeeding mothers in the world, but the "right support" can keep mums breastfeeding for longer. The Start4Life BreastFeeding Friend chatbot – BFF for short – aims to address this need for support with a tool that's accessible during the wee  hours when healthcare professionals aren't available. This bot, as it turns out, probably won't give you the support you require

"New babies need to be fed round the clock, and the peak times for online searches for breastfeeding help (by volume over 24 hours) are 2 and 6 a.m., when healthcare professionals and ‘phone helplines are not readily available," a spokesperson for PHE explained. Read more...

Not all Starbucks barista mistakes are bad because one made it into 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'

You know exactly the direction that your day is going to go when you go to Starbucks, tell them your name is Jeff and get a cup with "Jessica" scrawled on the side.

But while most of the time its annoying, a bungled name can sometimes, very rarely, become a source of inspiration.

That's exactly what happened to Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, who had been tasked with the herculean task of naming the most prominent planet in the Star Wars film.

In various interviews, most recently with CNN, he told the story of going to Starbucks after he was told that he would get to name the end planet in Rogue One. Read more...

Surprise! Katie Cassidy's coming back to 'Arrow' as a series regular in Season 6

Well, this is unexpected.

Katie Cassidy will be returning to Arrow as a series regular in Season 6 — despite the fact that her character, Laurel Lance (aka Black Canary), was killed off in Season 4.

In the world of superhero shows, anything is possible — and Laurel's sister, Sara (Caity Lotz) has already proven that you can't keep a good vigilante down, having died and been resurrected on Arrow before moving over to spinoff series DC's Legends of Tomorrow

But Cassidy won't be reviving the Laurel Lance that fans knew and loved for the first four seasons of Arrow — she'll be playing the Earth-2 doppelgänger version of Laurel, aka Black Siren, a metahuman criminal who was brought over to Earth-1 by the villainous speedster known as Zoom in The Flash Season 2. Sean Spicer went an entire press briefing with something in his teeth

It was bound to happen with the White House press briefing always scheduled right after lunch: Press Secretary Sean Spicer held Monday's press event with food stuck in his teeth the entire time.

It was a persistent piece of food that didn't budge from start to finish and unlike the time when his American flag pin was upside down, no one notified him with a courtesy note or polite notification.

Too bad for Spicer, the mystery green blob (any guesses on what is was — spinach, parsley, kale?) deeply lodged between his lower teeth did not go unnoticed.  Read more...

Sia joins some 'Sesame Street' friends to get groovy about singing songs

For her first cameo on the hit PBS show Sesame Street, singer Sia donned her signature black and white wig as she danced and sung along with some adorable Muppet pals last week.

Instead of her normal long bangs covering her face, the "Elastic Heart" singer chose to wear a big red nose to cover most of her face. The singer tackled slow songs, fast songs and "dance like a monkey songs" while Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover and Abbey joined her both in dancing and in wearing wigs.

Given her wigless walk through LAX last week, we might get to see a lot more of Sia's face in the future. Read more...

Bros at a city council meeting demand a 12-foot statue of Paul Walker and it's perfect

These two dudes put on their best graphic tees and "bacon" beanies, watched a video called "How to Tie a Tie," and rolled up to San Clemente's City Council meeting with one prerogative: get a 12-foot statue of Paul Walker built on the San Clemente pier, stat.

Why? Because it'd be inspiring, duh. Paul Walker helped countless dudes work up the courage to "ask out Shelby," and, like, "stand tall."

Plus, they're "pretty sure Paul's cousin went to San Clemente high school for at least a few semesters," and "everyone is so steamed," right now, it'd be the perfect solution to calm down a world that's really, really "P.O'd."  Read more...

Cat pulled by remote controlled car has no time for haters

What do ya know- another lazy cat. Such a surprise.

This fluff ball of cat is so lazy that it's pulled in a plastic container attached to a remote controlled car and clearly DGAF. It might as well be waving to all its haters as it rolls on by like the sleepy grand marshal in a kitty parade.

Now imagine this video with "Ridin' Dirty" playing in the background. Better, right? Read more...
