Everyone's convinced Sean Spicer's upside-down flag pin was a distress signal

It was a fashion misstatement during Friday's White House press briefing. Or was it a message?

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer checked in with the press for his usual session while unknowingly wearing his American flag lapel pin upside down.

Twitter, of course, noticed.

'Buffy' is the only show that prepared us for the Hellmouth of Tinder

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered 20 years ago today at the dawn of the information age when humanity was grappling with a very big question — can nerds ever be cool?

Sarah Michelle Gellar and and her crew did their best to convince us. The conventionally hot outcasts who wouldn't take any bullshit from demons spent most of their time hanging out in the library with teachers researching ancient monsters.

Shockingly, the gang's not very lucky in love — it is not chill to ask out a high schooler when you're a vampire who has been alive for centuries... and that's actually one of the more successful relationships. In "I, Robot. You, Jane," the show gets to the root of a great modern evil — the endless stream of creeps you encounter while trying to find love online. The episode originally aired April 21,1997, and to this day, it is still the most powerful art created about Tinder.  Read more...

Mark Zuckerberg and Travis Kalanick laugh it up at 'Babes and Balls' party

What would any kind of Silicon Valley outing be without ping pong and a heaping side of sexism?

We may never know.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick both recently attended a birthday party for fellow rich white guy Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, at the Susan Sarandon-owned San Francisco outpost of SPiN. The two tech titans, one of whom is currently embroiled in a massive sexism scandal, were either unconcerned or unaware that the party was themed as a "Babes & Balls Breakfast at Tiffany's."

And if they were actually unaware, it's only because they ignored all the signs—at least one of which was a literal sign on Facebook.  Read more...

'Pokémon Go' developers feel you: Gyms need to be improved

Collecting and evolving Pokémon in Pokémon Go is a lot of fun, but the competitive side of the popular mobile app is lacking. Developer Niantic recognizes that.

Pokémon Go's gym feature needs to be improved, Niantic admitted in an interview with multiple outlets during the 2017 Game Developers Conference, Polygon reported Thursday.

In Pokémon Go, gyms are specific landmarks pockmarked across the world where players can use their Pokémon to battle for supremacy. If a player wins enough battles against a gym's leader(s), they take control of it (or join it if their team already has control of it) and select a Pokémon to defend the gym against other players. Sean Spicer channels Melissa McCarthy during a White House press conference

Press Secretary Sean Spicer made a joke during the daily White House press conference on Friday, and, to be fair, it was actually pretty funny.

In the first weeks of President Donald J. Trump's presidency, it became pretty clear that Spicer had a short temper when answering questions he didn't like or understand from the press. Being the press secretary and all, it was a bit problematic.

His performance was so ridiculous that he even got a jab from Saturday Night Live, where Melissa McCarthy played a very angry, gum-chewing Spicer. At one point in the bit, McCarthy charges a reporter with the podium. Read more...

Characters react to a naked Link in 'Zelda: Breath of the Wild'

The world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is incredibly responsive — enemies will pick up nearby objects to use as weapons, lightning has a higher chance of striking you if you're wearing a metal helmet and characters will not let you off the hook if you're walking around naked.

Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game that allows Link to wander the world in the nude (well, not completely nude, but close), so of course players are taking advantage of the opportunity and welcoming the breeze between their knees. The non-player characters that inhabit the world aren't ignorant of Link's nakedness, and people have been posting some of the funny interactions that ensue when walking around in their tight blue undershorts. The Airbus Pop.Up is the autonomous car/drone mashup of your dreams

When you really need to beat traffic, do you ever wish your car could just take flight and soar above the streets right then and there?

Airbus offered antsy commuters a tantalizing look at a multi-modal ride hailing model with its latest far-fetched future concept, Pop.Up. The high-flying transportation system, brought to life through renderings and video with Italdesign, was unveiled earlier this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Pop.Up design is built around a small capsule about the size of a two-seat car cab. It's the one consistent feature between each mode of transport — wheels and rotors would automatically attach to the capsule along the way, and it's even designed to link up to public transport systems like subway trains and hyperloops for the most direct route to your destination. You'd never have to jockey for a seat on the train ever again.   Read more...

Hurricane forecasters sent a blunt warning to their bosses

When Hurricane Sandy made a devastating left hook into the Mid-Atlantic on Oct. 29, 2012, killing nearly 150 people and causing about $70 billion in damage, a narrative took hold in the weather community and the media that made its way to Capitol Hill.

U.S. weather models were late in forecasting that storm's bizarre track when compared to the top model from Europe, which locked onto it more than a week in advance. Many in and out of government began to criticize what they saw as a growing modeling gap across the Atlantic Ocean.

The weather model wars are continuing, and new evidence has emerged that instead of making a leap forward in forecast accuracy as Congress has directed, the U.S. may be about to take a step back, at least when it comes to high-impact events such as hurricanes and tropical storms are concerned. The Women's Strike fizzled because Americans can't stop working

At the Women's March in January, there was a line of screaming women in pink pussy hats stretching as far as the eye could see. While there isn't an official headcount of how many participated in the Women's Strike on Wednesday, the visuals told a far different story.

Just over a thousand people were estimated at the strike's major protest  outside Trump Tower in New York City, compared to 400,000 people who demonstrated in Manhattan in JanuaryMore than 3.2 million women participated in the Women's March, the largest protest in American history. Of course, the strike can't be expected to produce the same kind of turnout as an international march. Still, millions of women still showed up to work on Wednesday or only partly participated. Kind man dresses wild toad in wonderful, tiny hats to make a little boy happy

We never knew a toad could look good in hats until we saw it on the internet. And now that we've seen it, both us and toads can never go back.

It all starts with Mr. Toad, who would show up day after day on Chris Newsome's porch in the summer.

"The toad would sit on my front porch every night during the summer," Newsome explained. "He lives under the daisies in my flower bed and he would come to the porch to eat bugs."

Image: 1158PM/IMGUR

Since the toad became a regular visitor, Newsome dubbed him Mr. Toad (although he isn't completely sure that the toad is male). And although Mr. Toad may not have been ready, he was about to become the center of a child's delight. Read more...

Cory Booker refuses to rule out running for president at SXSW

'Hack' blamed for Instagram post that briefly upended the NFL world

When the verified Instagram account of New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo appeared to bid the Boston area farewell early Friday, it was a major piece of NFL news.

Except that it apparently wasn't news at all.

In the wee hours of Friday morning, Garoppolo's Instagram account posted a photo of him celebrating with the Super Bowl trophy, alongside this caption:

“So grateful for my time in New England. Peace out Boston✌🏻"

Garoppolo has been Tom Brady's backup in New England for three seasons. Cruise ship crashes into one of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world

The dreamy beauty of a coral reef in Southeast Asia has been partially damaged by a massive, 4,290-ton cruise ship called the Caledonian Sky.

On Saturday, the ship crashed into a popular diving site called Crossover Reef, which holds some of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world, located in West Papua province, environmental news outlet Mongabay reports.

It reportedly managed to smash some 17,000 square feet of coral in an area previously pristine enough to be considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's expected it'll take nearly 10 years for a full recovery from the incident. Now local officials want the British-owned cruise ship company to pay for the damage. Read more...

Gee, wouldn't it be just too bad if someone leaked the March Madness bracket on Selection Sunday again?

March Madness is arguably the most glorious annual event in sports, and it all centers around a simple tournament bracket that's most easily and enjoyably digested at one time.

That's why the tournament's annual "Selection Sunday" reveal is so egregious. It's a two-hour TV program (thankfully, "only" 90 minutes this year) that lards copious amounts of bloviation and advertising around something that most sports fans would prefer was just posted online at an appointed time.

Last year, however, an anonymous vigilante threw themselves upon the gears of this money-making machine by leaking the 2016 bracket halfway through the TV reveal. Now 2017 Selection Sunday is upon us in two days. Could we be due a repeat?  Read more...

How teens are pranking your Facebook News Feeds with random events

Seen any strange events popping up in your Facebook News Feed lately?

Maybe something very mundane, like a niche event at a school you've never heard of? Or perhaps something a bit more unusual, like worm-charming or mushroom-growing classes?

Well it's not advertising, and it's not an accident.

It's actually part of what seems to be the latest Facebook trend among British teens: making random events pop up in their friends' News Feeds by saying they're going to attend, even when they're obviously not.

The innovative photos that proved no two snowflakes are alike

Image: Metropolitan Museum of Art

Raised on a farm in Jericho, Vermont, Wilson Alwyn Bentley became fascinated with the crystalline patterns of snowflakes at a young age.

As a teenager, he began trying to sketch the delicate formations with the aid of an old microscope, but found them melting or sublimating into vapor before he could draw them in any detail.

After much tinkering, Bentley devised a way to connect his microscope to the bellows of a large-format view camera, and finally captured a photograph of a complete snowflake on January 15, 1885.

He photographed over 5,000 more snowflakes over the following decades, capturing each crystal on a microscope slide backed by black velvet, working quickly to capture a photo before it disappeared. Read more...

Terrence Malick is just embarrassing movie stars with weird sex stuff now

Terrence Malick apparently isn't making movies anymore, he's making elaborate excuses to put our hottest movie stars into extremely awkward sex-fetish scenarios that are about as titillating as invasive dentistry.

Only two reasons I can think for why he might be doing this: To thoroughly embarrass famous people without anyone realizing it, or to gratify his own bizarro, wildly inaccurate notions about how human beings sate their carnal desires. If it's the former, I admire his diabolical plan, but it must be stopped; if the latter, it's just weird and icky and also must be stopped. Either way, Terrence Malick must be stopped.  Read more...

There's now a 'She persisted' energy bar because this is what we've come to

American progressives now face a nearly insurmountable task: Manage one of the largest social protest movements in history, while refusing to lapse into cheesiness.

Their latest challenge comes in the form of a "She Persisted" energy bar. Chef and blogger Lentine Alexis developed a recipe for Mother Jones that she hopes will sustain people for a long day of protesting. It's also known as the "Superseed Energy Bar," or the "bar for making change."

When Mitch McConnell shunned Elizabeth Warren from the Senate floor, his reproach — "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted" — quickly became a refrain for the resistance.  Read more...

This is what actually makes your Kickstarter successful (Hint: Not $)

Every Kickstarter project wants to meet its fundraising goal. But a new study suggests that raising a ton of money doesn't predict how much success a crowdfunding project will ultimately find.

Researchers at North Carolina State University found that the number of people who supported a project on Kickstarter — rather than how much money the project raked in — was the real indicator of whether a product would succeed.

The study, published this month in the journal Research Policy, followed 1,000 successful Kickstarter campaigns in technology, product design, hardware and video games. All participants who responded raised at least $10,000 from an average of 1,078 backers.  Read more...

An 1895 photo album offers a gentleman's guide to self-defense moves

Image: Metropolitan Museum of Art

These images come from an untitled turn-of-the-century album which catalogued numerous maneuvers a person can use if suddenly engaged in hand-to-hand combat.

Following the revolutionary advancements in motion photography made by Étienne-Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge in the 1880s, many similar handbooks of bodies in motion were produced, with purposes ranging from artistic and scientific reference to achieving business success through exercise.

Here, two finely dressed gentlemen demonstrate a variety of (rather improbable-looking) encounters and the holds, twists, chops and drops one can use to come out on top, pocket watch and coin purse intact. Read more...

'Alien: Covenant' faux advert shows you the birth of the robot apocalypse

The next installment of the Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant, just added another cool piece of backstory to the film series, this time focusing on Walter, the humanoid robot played by Michael Fassbender, with a little help from AMD, the processor company.

In a short clip posted on YouTube, we see the "birth" of Walter as his parts are assembled (a la Westworld's opener) and his processor chips are implanted. Oh, what's that? Yeah, it's sort of a commercial for AMD, too. Thankfully, AMD's involvement turns out to add a bit of cool faux-authenticity rather than mere product shilling. These hijabi self-defense videos aren't the tutorials we want, but they're the ones we need

At anti-Trump rallies around the country, a popular chant often reverberates among the crowd: “When Muslim lives are under attack, what do we do? Stand up. Fight back.”

A new video series called Self Defense Starter Kit is hoping to allow Muslim women to do just that, empowering them with self-defense techniques. The series — produced by directors Robie Flores and Ali Withers — was created in responses to the spike in documented hate crimes after the election of President Donald Trump.

Though portions of the video series can be useful to women of all backgrounds, the main focus of the series is empowering Muslim women. The Self Defense Starter Kit videos feature two Muslim women instructors and cover topics exclusive to the community, like what to do if an attacker grabs your hijab. Read more...
