Teen makes a terrible, terrible mistake in letting friend choose her first tattoo

Friends don't let friends make tattoo decisions.

Elle Mills, a YouTuber and student, wanted to make a series of "first time" videos for her channel. Her friend, Tavian Palacios, had recently gotten a tattoo and suggested Mills get one for the first video of the series.

"[I] felt like it wouldn't be an exciting YouTube video if I just got a tattoo and that was it, so I decided it would be a whole lot more entertaining if Tavian chose it and surprised me," Mills said in an interview.

And, boy, did her friend deliver on that surprise. Without her knowledge, Palacios chose a simple tattoo design of a heart with a banner in the middle displaying his Twitter handle.  Read more...

You can re-write the Red Wedding in this 'Game of Thrones' board game

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Or you just reset the game board and play again.

A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game adapts George R.R. Martin's enormously popular series of novels into a game you can play at home. Using the books as a springboard, players participate in their own bloody struggles for control of the Seven Kingdoms.

The initial game — which heads to Kickstarter later this year, with a retail release set for 2018 — specifically focuses on the tension between the Stark and Lannister families. Expansions are common with miniatures games like these, so expect the game to introduce the other houses of Westeros over time. Read more...

Guess which other 'Star Wars' movie had wild alternate endings? 'Star Wars'

Had enough of alternate endings to Rogue One? Then you may want to check out the far superior alternate endings for its sequel — a little movie now known as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

The Rogue One endings have been arriving thick and fast over the last week or so, thanks largely to the release of the Star Wars standalone movie in digital formats this Friday. We've learned that Jyn Erso might have survived in an escape pod or by being frozen in carbonite; that Orson Krennic may have survived the Death Star's attack on Scarif only to be killed by Darth Vader; that K-2SO originally died on Scarif's tropical beachesRead more...

This man's epic quest for a rainbow bagel makes a crucial point about accessibility

If you're in New York City, you could get your hands on a coveted rainbow bagel pretty easily. Only a MetroCard fare and a few subway stops are between you and the copious amounts of dyed dough.

But if you have a mobility-related disability, public transportation — and navigating a city overall — isn't exactly bagel quest-friendly.

Just ask Zach Anner.

To mark Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month this March, the popular YouTuber, who lives with cerebral palsy, collaborated with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation to release a hilarious and illuminating video on the lack of accessibility in cities. Read more...

Uber will totally narc on teens

Kids are not to be trusted. And now, thanks to Uber for teens, they don't have to be.

The scandal-plagued ride-hail company announced Thursday a new program allowing parents to add teenagers to a "family profile," thus allowing plucky youngsters aged 13 to 17 the ability to hail a car all by their grownup selves. No adults required.

"We all wish we could be in multiple places at once," the saccharine ad copy — no doubt channeling Uber CEO Travis Kalanick's desire to simultaneously extinguish all of his company's press fires — tells us. "But until then, Uber can help families with the logistics." Read more...

Everyone on Twitch can't stop watching this new survival shooter

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is tearing up the charts on Twitch today, placing at no. 1 with over 145,000 viewers across just 20 different streamers. This may be the first time you're hearing about Battlegrounds.

The game just released on Steam Early Access and was created by the same modder who made Arma 3's "Battle Royale" and consulted on the super-popular H1Z1: King of the Kill. That modder, Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Green, is finally working on his own standalone game alongside developer Bluehole — Battlegrounds.

Battlegrounds, just like PlayerUnkown's other projects, is a battle royale-style game where players enter an environment, gather weapons, armor and other items and fight to the death — think of it like a competitive survival shooter gameH1Z1: King of the Kill is the most popular game in this genre — it even has a professional scene where players compete in tournaments for hundreds of thousands of dollars — but Battlegrounds may already be on its way to usurping H1Z1's throne.  Read more...

People can't get over this photo of Republican dudes who want to cut maternity care

Republicans like to insist the war on women is nothing more than hysterical liberal outrage.

Sure, the left uses the phrase to occasionally score political points, but sometimes Republicans make it so easy. Like when they appear to be casting aside women's needs without a second thought or even purposely targeting rights and policies that many women consider fundamental to their well-being and freedom.

Case in point: When Vice President Mike Pence tweeted a photo on Thursday from a meeting with a group of very conservative Congressional Republicans who want to eliminate maternity care from a set of required health insurance benefits, people couldn't help but notice a glaring omission: women.  Read more...

Scorching heat from this 'artificial sun' could help fight climate change

German scientists have just switched on the world's largest "artificial sun," an instrument they say could be a game-changing technology in the fight against climate change.

With 149 high-powered lamps, the Synlight system produces light about 10,000 times the intensity of natural sunlight on the Earth's surface. When concentrated on a single spot, the lamps can generate scorching temperatures of around 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

The scientists say they eventually hope to harness that heat to produce hydrogen fuels, a carbon-free alternative for vehicles and airplanes.

WikiLeaks reveals someone at the CIA really, really likes 'Doctor Who'

With the latest dump of WikiLeaks data called "Dark Matter" we get to see how (allegedly) deep the CIA's affection for British TV goes.

The documents, released Thursday, contain  more details from the "Vault 7" leak

One of the big hacks was supposedly named "Sonic Screwdriver," which is a reference to the Doctor's trusty tool on the long-running BBC series Doctor Who. The sonic screwdriver is basically a sci-fi version of a magic wand that can do everything from picking locks to hacking into computers.

Subtle.

The CIA's Sonic Screwdriver is described in the WikiLeaks documents as a way to implant code through an adapter while a Mac is booting up. Then, other tools can be installed onto the computer even if it has a firmware password. Read more...

How to block 'Game of Thrones' spoilers, curse words and eggplant emoji on Twitter

Finally, some peace and quiet on social media.

Twitter rolled out some new muting options today, which will allow Android and web users to hide selected words, phrases, hashtags and even emoji from their timelines and notifications for preset amounts of time. (iOS users, for now, will have to settle for blocking things from their notifications.)

The feature was first teased last October and expanded upon earlier this month.

Twitter has allowed its users to mute individual profiles and notifications for a while now — but the new individual word blockage can keep everything from annoying TV spoilers to offensive or triggering language off your timeline. Drones are revolutionising dinosaur research by mapping giant footprints by air

Along the northwest Australian coast lies a dinosaur highway.

With the Indian Ocean eating away at the rock, the red cliffs of the Kimberley have revealed hundreds of prehistoric footprints. Two-legged theropods and big-bodied sauropods, among other groups, walked this patch of Earth around 130 million years ago.

Armed with drones and hand-held laser scanners, scientists are mapping the heavy tracks they left behind.

Anthony Romilio works in the Vertebrate Palaeontology and Biomechanics Lab at the University of Queensland. He and his team have created 3D models of track sites using a combination of high-resolution aerial photography and lidar — a way of measuring depth with laser light — gathered by hand, drone and light aircraft. A woman in Mumbai is being hailed a hero on Twitter after reportedly jumping on a leopard to rescue her little son from its claws. The incident is believed to have taken place in northern Mumbai in an area bordering a forest-park.

The animal leaped out of a dense thicket at around 9pm local time. “I started yelling for help, and ran towards my child to grab him. On seeing me approach, the leopard made a dash for the bushes,” the mother recalled.

Residents have blamed local authorities for not installing streetlights in the area. The mother, however, managed to avert any serious injuries to her three-year-old. He was given three stitches at a local hospital.  Read more...

Emma Thompson says Donald Trump once asked her out but she turned him down

"Hi, it's Donald Trump here."

That's what Emma Thompson heard as soon as she picked up the phone.

What followed next is a pretty incredible story.

It was the late 1990s, and Thompson was doing a film called Primary Colors with John Travolta, the British actress said during an interview for Swedish news outlet SVT

Thompson, who at the time was freshly divorced from Kenneth Branagh, received the call from The Donald while on her trailer on the Universal Studios lot.

After the initial shock, Trump reportedly said: "Yeah, I just you know, I wondered if I could offer you some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers. They’re really comfortable." Read more...

Future of farming: smart autonomous drones with eyes on the field

Farmers have another tool to help them in the field.

With smartphones in hand, tech-savvy farmers are able to fly heavy duty drones out to do everything from crop dusting to surveying the health of the plants.

And with smarter software, drones can do more autonomously, making the process more efficient and at far lower cost than hiring a specialised pilot to man an aircraft over the fields.

While makers have offered agriculture drones to the market for two decades now, adoption is tiny, according to Xaircraft, a Chinese maker that's starting to expand into the U.S. Read more...

Company pays out staff wages in coins, leading to massive backlash

Change is definitely not welcome in this case.

200 employees from a bus company were surprised on payday — not by the amount of money they got, but by their weight.

The Baoying Car and Transport Company from Yangzhou, China, decided to pay employees their wages of up to hundreds of dollars each, in 1 yuan coins — the lowest denomination, worth about 15 cents USD.

Rolls of coins paid out.

From backyard to billions: This startup is leading the game in fantasy sports

There’s a Scottish startup that’s been making waves in the US fantasy sports space, and its eye is now firmly set on changing the fantasy football game in the UK.

On a journey that may seem alien to most, Edinburgh startup FanDuel began their venture in North America, and only recently brought their platform to their UK home. The company got its start back at 2009’s South by SouthWest interactive festival in Texas, where its five co-founders came up with the idea of daily fantasy football during a backyard brainstorm. Making a departure from season-long online gaming tournaments, the team hit on the idea of creating shorter gameplay, with more opportunity for players to opt in on a daily basis. This city has no monuments to women so an artist did a colourful shake-up

There is not a single monument dedicated to a female historical figures in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

Like most cities, Sofia is dotted with rusty monuments of warriors, political, religious and literary figures. They've become so ornamental, they are rarely noticed. Every single one of them is male. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An impromptu artistic intervention is trying to address that.

Seven brightly coloured busts with female faces have been erected on temporary pedestals around the city in an attempt to break that stigma and start a conversation with a pop of colour.  Read more...

Mayim Bialik has something to say about people calling grown women 'girls'

Mayim Bialik has had enough of people calling grown women "girls". In a powerful video — viewed by more than 1 million people — the Big Bang Theory star urged people to think about the language they use when describing women.

"When we use words to describe adult women that are typically used to describe children, it changes the way we view women — even unconsciously — so that we don't equate them with adult men," says Bialik

To over come the issue, Bialik suggests that we politely correct people. "Maybe if we start using language that elevates women and doesn't equate them with sweet, small, cuddly, tender things, we'll start treating them as more than that as well," she said. Read more...

2017 has been a big year for Bitcoin: its highest price ever, a major disappointment from the SEC for No. 1 Bitcoin fans the Winkelvoss twins, and, for a moment, a value higher than gold

But another cryptocurrency has been quietly growing in volume while everyone was focused on Bitcoin. Ethereum, which is kind of like Bitcoin but slightly nerdier and more complicated, edged up against Bitcoin in its daily volume earlier this month. In plain english, Bitcoin is much bigger in terms of monetary value, but Ethereum is being used so much that it's facilitating nearly as much business.

In defense of ghosting: It's nothing personal

Ghosting is everywhere, and dating apps are desperate to put an end to this disappearing act. But ghosting doesn't need a solution — it is the solution.

If you didn’t already know before plunging into the deep, dark depths that is online dating, you certainly learned quickly thereafter: dating is a numbers game. And when you’re messaging with what turns out to be your third lamest match of the day, ghosting becomes a necessary tool to manage the exhaustion that is mining through the hundreds of (probably boring) people at your fingertips.

For the record: This isn’t the nicest way of looking at people. But neither is the meat-market display of the swiping mechanism employed by the most popular apps. It is, as they say, what it is. If you’re going to partake, this objectification is an inherent and unavoidable aspect of dating app culture. Read more...

People are weirdly into that Facebook 'On This Day' feature but FB won't give them access

A chat with Kurt Russell, aka Ego the Living Planet in 'Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2'

The ruse was truly elaborate. Right there, on the back of Kurt Russell's director's chair, was the ostensible name of his character — "J-Son."

And that seemed to answer the biggest question for reporters visiting the set of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 in Atlanta last spring, which was: Who would Russell be playing, exactly?

Between the chair and the concept art we'd seen earlier in the day, we had 'em dead to rights. Russell would indeed be playing J-Son, the duplicitous intergalactic monarch and father of half-Earthling Peter Quill, now leader of the newly minted Guardians. No more hiding it. Case closed. 'She's not waking up:' Boy saves mom using Siri to call ambulance

A little voice came on the phone and introduced himself as Roman.

The four-year-old boy had touched his mom's thumb to her phone and used Siri to call for an ambulance. His mom, he said, was "closing her eyes."

"Can you do me a favor?," the emergency responder on the call asks Roman. "Can you go and get mummy?"

"We can't," Roman says. "She's dead."

Roman told the responder his mom was "not breathing." He gives his address to the woman on the other end of the phone, then shakes his mom, as requested.

"She's not waking up," Roman says.  Read more...

Blood Orange releases a stunning new music video for 3 tracks

Why release a normal music video for one track when you can release a long music video for three songs?

Devonté Hynes, the human behind Blood Orange, has done just that with a new video for three standouts from his latest album, Freetown Sounds

The breathtaking visuals accompany “With Him,” “Best to You” and “Better Numb," and feature montages that include Empress Of singing and Amandla Stenberg accompanying Hynes on piano and violin. And of course, there is plenty of dancing—though not quite as much as previous Blood Orange videos.  Read more...

What 'Power Rangers' gets right that other superhero movies don't

Forget flying, super-strength and morphing. In the new reboot, it turns out the Power Rangers' real superpower is friendship.

Okay, that might be overstating the case a bit. But while Power Rangers may be no one's idea of an A-list property, it manages to stand out from the pack by getting right what so few other films like these do. Namely, it actually establishes its superhero team as a team

To back up a bit, the new Power Rangers movie functions as an origin story. Jason, Kim, Billy, Trini and Zach (the future Red, Pink, Blue, Yellow and Black Rangers, respectively) are five teenagers who attend the same small-town high school but barely know each other. That all changes when they happen to be in the same abandoned quarry at the same time, at the exact moment that they uncover five mystical glowing coins that grant them superpowers.  Read more...

Concept design puts stunning U-shaped skyscraper over New York

Are U kidding me with this skyscraper? (get it?)

A mind-blowing concept for the world's longest building has been revealed in the form of an incredibly cool, U-shaped skyscraper, and excuse us because we need a minute to take this all in. 😳

"The Big Bend" – an architectural structure designed by Oiio studio – is essentially an arched skyscraper that features a special elevator system able to travel horizontally, in curves and in loops.

You know, no biggie.

According to Oiio's website, the design plans to brilliantly work around the New York City zoning laws that create several obstacles for developers, limiting their ability to maximize property height, by focusing on length rather than height.  Read more...

Kid who can't handle being grounded for a day overreacts like only a 9 year old can

Ahh the pains of being 9 years old. All the angst of a teenager and no idea what to do with it.

Sometimes the only solution is to, like, pack your bags and run away to wherever pre-teen runaways go to? At least that's what this 9-year-old girl planned to do:

think my little sister is overacting a bit all because she got grounded for a day 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/Bq08CAbQ5j

— NK (@nicole_kennedyy) March 21, 2017

When @nicole_kennedyy texted her younger sister to check up on her, she was met with a slew of drama.

"The only thing that I like in my life is my friends, iPhone and my new house," is an incredible statement. It's something that only a young girl overreacting to being grounded or a drunk girl after a rough night out could say. Read more...

Cheaters will be allowed back in to some 'Counter-Strike' tournaments — Pros and fans are not happy

When Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players are caught using cheats or hacks, they can kiss their professional dreams goodbye. At least that's how it used to work. Now, one of the biggest tournament organizers is only honoring Valve's ban on cheaters for two years.

Tournament organizer ESL changed its tournament rulebook to state that Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) bans against players are now being waived after two years. This effects all of ESL's CS:GO events: Intel Extreme Masters events, ESL One tournaments and ESL Pro League seasons starting with the upcoming sixth season. The one exception would be if ESL hosts a CS:GO Major like they did with ESL One Cologne in 2016, because Valve sponsors those events, in which case the cheat bans will still stand. Read more...

Facebook reaction GIFs could soon finally be a thing

It's about freaking time. GIFs could finally be coming to more places on Facebook.

The social network plans to start testing a new GIF button in comments, Facebook confirmed Friday, meaning proper reaction GIFs could finally be a thing.

It's not clear if the test, which will apparently resemble the GIF button in Facebook Messenger, will become an official feature. In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson emphasized the feature is just an experiment for now.

“Everyone loves a good GIF and we know that people want to be able to use them in comments. So we're about to start testing the ability to add GIFs to comments and we'll share more when we can, but for now we repeat that this is just a test.” Read more...

That time Charles Barkley got a contact high from Nirvana

As far as random celebrity stories go, here's a pretty great one: Charles Barkley, in the prime of his NBA stardom, getting a contact high from the band Nirvana.

Buckle up, folks, for a trip back in time to a little place called 1993.

Barkley recently appeared on The Dan Patrick Show, where he shared some funny marijuana stories. Here's the Nirvana one, which best we can tell comes from Sept. 25, 1993. On that evening, Barkley hosted Saturday Night Live and Nirvana was the musical guest.

Barkley was coming off an NBA MVP season, while Nirvana was at the height of its rock stardom. (Frontman Kurt Cobain would die of an apparent suicide just over six months later.) Meanwhile, SNL's cast at the time included Chris Farley, Al Franken, Norm McDonald, Tim Meadows, Jay Mohr, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Sarah Silverman and David Spade. (Sheesh!) MashTalk: Will the new electronics ban affect your travel plans?

Welcome back to another week of MashTalk. On this week's podcast, the Mashable tech team breaks down the new electronics restrictions that'll affect passengers flying to the U.S. and UK from select Middle Eastern and North African countries.

This week's MashTalk is hosted by Senior Tech Correspondent Raymond Wong, with commentary from Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff and Tech Reporter Brett Williams.

Real Time News Reporter Colin Daileda joins to give us the full skinny on the new electronics restrictions (2:07). In a nutshell, electronics that are larger than a smartphone (i.e. tablets, laptops and game devices) can't be carried on board flights from listed airlines and must be placed in checked baggage. It's a huge hassle for everyone involved, and most warranties (like Apple Care) probably won't cover any accidental damage to your devices if you're forced to check them (9:51). Read more...

'Game of Thrones' wine will have to hold us over until Season 7's premiere

We're inching closer and closer to Game of Thrones' Season 7 premiere, but the impending winter of July 16 still seems decades away (is there more wildfire, what is happening?!).

Fortunately for us, Vintage Wine Estates is throwing Thrones fans a bone by finally releasing their much-anticipated Game of Thrones special edition wines.

Partnered with HBO, Wine Enthusiast's 2011 Winemaker of the Year Bob Cabral created the line of three Game of Thrones-inspired wines meant to symbolize "the strength of the characters and the terrain of their kingdoms."

So it turns out Shaq doesn't actually believe the Earth is flat

Thank God: Our national nightmare is over as Americans coast to coast collectively exhale.

No, Donald Trump has not resigned from the presidency. What we're talking about here is of much more importance: Shaquille O'Neal, it turns out, does not actually believe the world is flat.

You may recall last week when the retired NBA star and all-around celebrity said on his podcast that the spherical Earth is actually flat. Hoo-boy, let me tell you, did this bit of ground-breaking information from a scientific expert spawn some internet clicks. (Although our own Miriam Kramer did write a nuanced and thoughtful look at what's really up with flat-Earthers — you should check it out.) Read more...

The 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' poster leans into Spidey's Avengers connection

Spider-Man: Homecoming brings us our third Spider-Man in 15 years, but this webslinger's got something his predecessors didn't: a hookup to the Avengers.

The new poster makes that crystal-clear, positioning the Avengers tower smack-dab in the middle of the Manhattan skyline.

Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is there, too, chillin' like a villain on the water's edge.

In addition to his signature blue-and-red suit, Spider-Man's rocking a bright yellow blazer emblazoned with his school's insignia. And while the caption – "Homework can wait. How your car might be protected from hackers in the future

Two senators are trying to defend your future cars from hacks.

Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal (of Massachusetts and Connecticut, respectively) recently reintroduced the SPY Car Act, which aims to protect the control of your vehicle as well as any data a hacker might find there.

The bill's authors hope to separate "critical software systems" from noncritical ones, so an infection of the noncritical parts wouldn't necessarily lead to an infection of the systems that control the vehicle.

Were it to become law, the Federal Trade Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would be tasked with making sure vehicles could detect any kind of hack and follow that detection by stopping it before the car is being controlled remotely.  Read more...

Here's a super nerdy analysis of the music in 'Zelda: Breath of the Wild'

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild soundtrack is beautiful on the surface, but YouTuber Mark Brown digs a little deeper to see exactly what makes the sound design of the latest Zelda games such a success.

In the video above, Brown explains how underneath Breath of the Wild's visceral piano plinks and violin plucks is a very nuanced orchestration that echoes Zelda games of the past without completely lifting classic theme songs or tunes. The soundtrack helps explore the themes and tones of Breath of the Wild while staying true to the series with understated references and surprising callbacks. Read more...

iCloud wasn't hacked for ransom, but you should make sure to keep your account safe, anyway

Earlier this week, a sketchy group of hackers announced a bold claim: they had access to hundreds of millions of Apple emails, and then, threatened to wipe user data from 200 million iCloud accounts if their ransom demands aren't met by April 7.

The group, which calls itself the Turkish Crime Family (TCF), made those threats through its Twitter handle and an aggressive campaign to convince journalists to cover the story. The threats were first reported by Motherboard.

Apple reps issued a statement to Fortune clarifying the reports as the story developed. "The alleged list of email addresses and passwords appears to have been obtained from previously compromised third-party services," the spokesperson said. Read more...

How MealPal plans to outlive the subscription service hype

Before she co-founded ClassPass, Mary Biggins sold subscriptions for leather-bound books.

"I love the subscription space," Biggins said in an interview on Mashable's Biz Please podcast. "From really early in my career, I've been thinking about subscription unit economics and how you acquire customers. The thing that's really cool about subscriptions is there are so many different levers to think about."

Biggins joined Mashable social media producer Tracey Edouard and me in our New York headquarters to talk about her history in the subscription space and her new venture, MealPal.

MealPal, which lets customers pay a set monthly fee to pick up weekday lunches from participating restaurants, is growing. The startup just went international with a launch in London and raised another $15 million in venture funding. And even as the subscription space gets more crowded, and startups struggle to make as much of a mark as the boutique fitness subscription service ClassPass once did, Biggins says MealPal is built to last.  Read more...
