Royal Jordanian bans use of laptops on flights in and out of U.S.

In a notice that appears to be prompted by federal U.S. officials, Royal Jordanian Airlines issued a new ban on electronic devices on planes Monday.

A tweet from the airline's official account listed new rules for all passengers flying in and out of the U.S. that spell horror for anyone who gets bored on long distance journeys.

"Carrying any electronic or electrical device on board the flight cabins is strictly prohibited," the statement said, meaning that bringing out your iPad to watch a movie is apparently now a no-no on the carrier. Read more...

The iPhone 8 sounds like it's the ultimate homage to the original

You've already heard all about the iPhone 8's front — it's rumored to have an OLED display with curved edges that dominate the entire front and no home button — but we may have just learned a little something about its back.

Korea's ETnews, which has accurately reported on smartphone rumors in the past, claims the iPhone 8 will sport a new "three-dimensional glass" back with curves on the top, bottom, and left and right edges that are more "gentle and rounded" than the iPhone 7's current design.

The rounder and curvier "water drop" design isn't a wedge like on the Pixel and Pixel XL, which has a profile that tapers; the back's still said to be flat (for the rumored wireless charging), and it's just the corners and edges that might get slightly more sculpted. Read more...

Elmo is sad to learn he's out of a job because of Trump's budget cuts

Elmo go bye-bye.

Controversy has surrounded Donald Trump's proposed budget, which includes cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds both PBS and NPR

If this is the case, it's looking like Elmo and the Sesame Street gang are out of a job. Someone theorized what that tough conversation might sound like by creating this parody video of Elmo getting the heave-ho.

As expected, Elmo is caught completely off-guard, citing his 32 years in the biz. He has rent to pay and insurance he desperately needs. After getting the axe, the person doing the firing suggests applying for government healthcare while he still can because, ya know, that's being cut too.  Read more...

Woody Harrelson has apparently quit smoking weed

Sometimes things are not what they seem. Take Woody Harrelson for example.

While in conversation with Vulture, the actor revealed that despite people's perception of him being seen as a little wild, and despite the fact that he tried to open a pot business in Hawaii last year, Harrelson hasn't gotten high in quite some time.

Who would have known?

"They think I’m a party animal, which … I am a party animal. I mean, that might be one thing. But I am a party animal," he said. "But on the other hand, I haven’t… I’m now extremely moderate and…I actually stopped smoking pot almost a year ago." Read more...

Police want to know about literally anyone who googled this guy

Police in Minnesota want to solve a crime by combing through Google search history.

Officers in Edina, a city of around 50,000 people, got a warrant compelling Google to divulge information about people who searched for the name of a financial fraud victim between Dec. 1, 2016 and Jan. 7, 2017.

Someone convinced a credit union to wire $28,500 from an Edina man's account by creating a fake passport using the man's name alongside a photo of someone else.

In their warrant application, police stated that the fake photo came up by googling the victim's name, but didn't come up in other search engines. The warrant for the five-week period compels Google to hand over information regarding anyone who searched the victim's name, including email addresses, social security numbers, birthdates, IP addresses and "information related to the content the user is viewing/using." Obi-Wan Kenobi is back. Here's what it means for the Star Wars saga.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Star Wars: Rebels episode "Twin Suns."

From a certain point of view, Obi-Wan Kenobi sits at the very center of the entire Star Wars saga.

Dead or alive, Kenobi is the only human character who shows his face in every episode of the original and prequel trilogies. His inability to prevent the rise of the Empire, or the creation of Darth Vader, is the core story of Episodes I-III. Kenobi's nurturing of Luke — and lying to the kid about his dad — sets in motion the core story of Episodes IV-VI. The core mystery of how he turned into a Force ghost when he lost his duel with Darth Vader in Star Wars lasted six whole movies.  Read more...

'John Wick' kicks just as much butt when he's using Nerf guns

John Wick is known for its incredible fight sequences. It turns out they are no less amazing when all of the real guns get substituted with Nerf guns.

YouTube channel Corridor, which specializes in Nerf action videos, demonstrates this perfectly by showing us what John Wick would be like if the weapons were Nerfed, literally. The action is still so captivating, we almost wish all movies would use Nerf guns instead of real guns. At the very least, movies would be more colorful that way. Read more...

Why can't Colin Kaepernick get a job?

Why can't Colin Kaepernick get a job? He apparently can't get so much as an interview.

Even Spike Lee or all people smells something "fishy" about the the stone-cold reception Kaepernick's talents are receiving in the NFL world.

A post-brunch Instagram post by Lee that made headlines Monday could initially be dismissed as just another bizarro bubble in the celebrity fishbowl. But it actually illuminates one of the football world's most fascinating and controversial spring storylines.

In an Instagram post Sunday, the director and sports fan implored his hometown New York Jets to sign Kaepernick, who's currently an NFL free agent. But Lee also wrote something more. Insults are bad but this little kid's 'Overwatch' diss is too perfect

What's the worst possible insult you could throw at someone? Calling them a bad Overwatch player.

A parent shared the disciplinary slip that their daughter received at school for insulting a fellow student after her pencil was stolen. Instead of going with a tried-and-true insult like "doo doo head," "fart face" or "butt muncher," the student went straight for the throat and called out the perpetrator's Overwatch skills by saying they mainly play as arguably the worst character in the game, Hanzo.

My daughter got in trouble for calling a kid who stole her pencil a Hanzo main. My husband and I have been laughing for half an hourpic.twitter.com/Y1vDfGZZpA

Disney experiment lets you catch real objects while in VR

We're still getting used to the immersive magic virtual reality offers, but a new experiment from Disney Research pushes the technology into another realm: interaction with real objects while in VR.

A demonstration of the experiment was revealed on Monday via video (below) that shows a VR headset wearer accurately catching a real ball thrown at him. However, the VR headset wearer can't see the real ball. Instead he's reacting to a virtual ball that is tracked to correspond to the real-world object.

The tracking was accomplished using the OptiTrack Flex 13 motion capture camera, which tracked the ball as well as the catcher's hands and head at roughly 120 frames per second. Although it's not readily apparent in the video, the hardware is an Oculus Rift headset and the team used Unity software to render the virtual environment.   Read more...

A puppeteer's personal story about bringing Sesame Street's first autistic Muppet to life

It was a Thursday evening, and puppeteer Stacey Gordon was hard at work in her Phoenix, Arizona studio when she received the call of a lifetime.

Matt Vogel, Sesame Street's Muppet Captain and Big Bird understudy, called to let Gordon know that the show's producers picked her to play Julia, the first-ever autistic Muppet and a new addition to the broadcast. The call left her stunned — so much so, she almost couldn't absorb the news.

"I thought he said a different name," Gordon says, laughing. "And then I was like, 'Wait. That was my name.'"

Now, as both a puppeteer and mom of a 13-year-old autistic boy, she's "thrilled and indescribably honored" to operate a Muppet who will bring more awareness and compassion around autism into millions of children's homes. Read more...

This GIF has been labeled a deadly weapon

A man who allegedly sent a tweet to a reporter that triggered a seizure was arrested and charged by the FBI last week and on Monday he was charged with more crimes by the Dallas district attorney.

John Rivello, 29, was arrested Friday by the FBI in connection with sending a strobing GIF in a tweet last December to Dallas-based journalist Kurt Eichenwald, who has epilepsy. He was charged with cyberstalking Friday after Eichenwald suffered a seizure and pursued legal action against the troll.

On Monday, the Dallas County District Attorney's Office filed more charges against Rivello, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a DA spokeswoman. A hate crime enhancement was added because it appears that Rivello targeted Eichenwald because he is Jewish. Read more...

Guess launches a real smartwatch this time

The last time Guess tried to make a smartwatch, it was pretty lame. Now, the company is taking another swing, this time with a full-blown smartwatch that could rival other fashion brands worming into wearable tech.

The company dipped its toes into smartwatches in 2015 with a hybrid smartwatch called the Guess Connect. It wasn't that techy, and it was confusing to use. Something's wrong with Kim Kardashian's Snapchat, and nobody will tell us why

'Sesame Street' has brilliantly trolled Donald Trump for decades

It's always a sunny day when Sesame Street is trolling President Donald Trump. And though you might not realize it, the classic children's show has been poking fun at the business man turned leader of the U.S. for yearssss.

Way before Donald Trump was president, Sesame Street was there, trolling him long before any of us knew what we were in for. The show was ahead of its time, creating parody-inspired characters like Ronald Grump and Donald Grump as early as the 1980s.

While the nonprofit show is careful not to get too political with its programming, over the years Sesame Street has delivered some epic burns to Donald Trump, and in light of his recent plans to cut PBS funding — a network that re-airs Sesame Street episodes even though the show moved to HBO — we thought it would be a perfect time to revisit them. The U.S. drops in the World Happiness rankings. Trump policies won't cheer us up.

The United States keeps getting sadder — and things probably won't get better under the policies of President Donald Trump.

That's one of the conclusions from the latest World Happiness Report released by the United Nations, which has the U.S. dropping a spot to 14th in the world.

Meanwhile, Norway was ranked as the happiest country. Australia, Canada and Costa Rica all did better than the United States.

One reason America is getting gloomier: money doesn't equal happiness.

"The central paradox of the modern American economy ... is this: income per person has increased roughly three times since 1960, but measured happiness has not risen," writes Jeffrey D. Sachs, the Columbia University economist and special adviser to the UN Secretary-General who compiled the U.S. section of the report. Read more...

The awful missed calls that marred March Madness opening weekend

College basketball referees have something of a bad reputation. But then again, sometimes they really earn it.

Our unfortunate latest case in in point: This weekend's second round of March Madness, with seasons, legacies and berths in the Sweet 16 on the line.

Let's start with Sunday's matchup between eight-seed Arkansas and one-seed North Carolina. Carolina's up just one with 45 seconds to play.

Tar Heels point guard Joel Berry II drives right with the shot clock running down. Then he commits an obvious travel and what could easily be called a charge before throwing up a wild attempt that a teammate scoops up and scores. Carolina goes up 68-65 and goes on to win the game 72-65.  Read more...

All the same, the building's design seems to work remarkably well in mountainous and dense Chongqing, where builders say it was necessary to have the train go through the block.

The train reportedly runs on rubber tyres with air suspension units, and produce a mere 75.8 decibels of sound — 10 dB above a normal conversation. Read more...

Turtle which needed surgery to remove a bellyful of coins has died

The Thai sea turtle that lived in a wishing pond and ate nearly 1,000 coins over the years has died.

The 25-year-old turtle, named Omsin (Thai for "bank") was found with an engorged stomach full of coins back in February. She had a reportedly successful seven-hour surgery, but went into a coma later due to complications, the vet who operated on her said on Facebook.

Omsin died on Tuesday morning.

She lived in Si Racha, a town on the east coast of Thailand. The coins were thrown into the wishing pond for good luck by visitors. Read more...

Watch this woman count money faster than a cash-counting machine

This cashier from Shandong, eastern China, has gone viral after demonstrating her counting skills at a training session.

She managed to count 550 notes of different denominations of yuan in 77 seconds, quite a feat considering that cash-counting machines do exist.

She's not the only one who deserves some sort of record, however: check out this 10-year-old video of a Japanese clerk who managed to stamp 100 pieces of paper in 18 seconds.

This emerging country is getting unhappier by the year

India is getting unhappier by the year.

It now ranks lowest of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) emerging economies and second-lowest among SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations in the happiness index as revealed by the United Nations' World Happiness Report 2017

The 1.3-billion-strong country ranked 122 out of 155 countries, dropping four spots from a year ago.

Bike-sharing companies are flooding the market, but this one insists its bikes are smartest

Singapore now has a third bike-sharing company in just a few months.

One of China's largest bike-sharing firms, Mobike launched here on Tuesday, adding to the growing list of bike-sharing companies that have mushroomed.

Like many of its competitors, the bikes are stationless, so users are meant to just leave them on the side of the street and walk away when they're done.

But this convenience has led to issues like theft and even vandalism in countries like China, with many hogging the bikes by locking them in their private compounds. Read more...

Why people are painting their faces green in Russia

Alexei Navalny is an anti-corruption blogger who over the years became opposition leader and leading critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. As such, he's often exposed to intimidation from pro-Kremlin supporters.

However, this time he didn't expect to be doused with a green antiseptic liquid.

The incident happened as Navalny was campaigning in the Siberian city of Barnaul. An unknown assailant walked up to him and pretended to shake his hand before flinging the liquid — known in Russian as "zelyonka".

Navalny wrote on Facebook that he feared it was an acid attack. To his relief, the antiseptic remains on skin for days but it's harmless.  Read more...

Theresa May tells Vogue why 'gentleman' Donald Trump held her hand

Actions speak louder than words. And, when photographs of Theresa May and Donald Trump holding hands emerged just days after Trump's inauguration, people on both sides of the Atlantic weren't sure what to make of it.

In an interview with Vogue, May has broken her silence on the real reason she and Trump were spotted hand in hand back in January.

"I think he was actually being a gentleman," May told Vogue. Journalist Gaby Wood wrote that May was "laughing off this gesture" as she spoke.

"We were about to walk down a ramp, and he said it might be a bit awkward," May continued. May is the first British prime minister to appear on the cover of American Vogue, and the photos were shot by Annie Leibovitz. Read more...

Butterbeer ice cream now exists in the muggle world and we are grateful

Stop what you're doing immediately. Butterbeer ice cream now exists in the muggle (and wizarding) world.

Yuengling's Ice Cream just announced butterbeer as its latest flavour, which takes its inspiration from the popular wizarding beverage.

The ice cream company has paid heed to J. K. Rowling's description of butterbeer's unique flavour, which she once described as "a little bit like less sickly butterscotch."

The butterbeer ice cream, therefore, will be made from half buttercream ice cream and half butterscotch ice cream, "twisted with a butterscotch swirl." Mmm. Read more...

Reporter instantly regrets attempting to broadcast beside a large puddle

If you decide to film a news report next to a very large puddle, there's only really one way things can end.

On Monday, broadcast journalist Lauren Hewitt attempted to film a local news report about housing in Norwich.

Somewhat unwisely, she chose to position herself next to a very puddly stretch of road.

Oh dear.

The best part of that clip has to be the way she stops the report, turns around, and then immediately gets splashed yet again.

This trick will let you record Snapchat videos without your hands

Ever wish you could record a Snapchat video with no hands? Good news: it's not only possible, it's easier than you may think.

While there's no official way to enable hands-free recording in the app itself, there's a relatively simple workaround for iPhone users via iOS' accessibility settings (we haven't yet found a reliable method for Android, unfortunately.)

Head over to the accessibility setting: Settings —> General —> Accessibility —> AssistiveTouch and enable AssistiveTouch. If you've ever dealt with a broken home button you're likely familiar with how AssistiveTouch works but you'll now need to create a custom gesture as well. Read more...

Ellen DeGeneres was hospitalized for the most Ellen DeGeneres reason ever

Ellen DeGeneres had to go to the hospital this week—but don't worry, she's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The comedian pulled a Jimmy Fallon and injured herself on the way home after a night out and a couple of glasses of wine with her wife, Portia de Rossi. Luckily, she told the whole story on Monday's episode of Ellen.

"I broke my finger. I know what you're thinking—how can you host a show without the tip of your ring finger? I'm not going to let this beat me. I am not!," DeGeneres exclaimed.

"So, you know how in gymnastics when you do a one-handed cartwheel and you have to spread the weight evenly between all your fingers? Well, I had two glasses of wine and fell into a door," she explained, then showed audiences pictures of the broken bones.   Read more...

Apple's new video app is part Snapchat, part iMovie and full of AI

Quick: you want to make a casual, shareable video that's longer than 60 seconds, what app do you use?

If you're drawing a blank (besides your phone's stock camera app) then you may have just made the case for Clips, Apple's new video app, which is due out in April.

At a high level, Clips is something of a cross between iMovie and Snapchat. You can edit together a series of clips (get it?) and still images into longer videos that you can stylize with filters, text overlays, graphics, and, yes, lots of emoji.

That may sound more like Snapchat than a straight-up video editor but the core features of Clips have more in common with iMovie than something Evan Spiegel would dream up. Read more...

Apple replaces the iPad Air with a new 9.7-inch model for $329

Exactly one year after it launched the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple has refreshed its tablet lineup with a new iPad in that exact size.

This isn't the Pro or the Air 3, though; it's just called iPad, and it starts at a very reasonable $329.

The new model appears to be very similar, specs-wise, to the iPad Air 2. Apple claims its 2,048x1,536 pixel screen is brighter than ever, and its chip has been upgraded to Apple's A9.

The cameras are the same: 8 megapixels on the back, 1.2 megapixels on the front. A Touch ID-enabled home button is there, of course, but the device doesn't come with a stylus like the iPad Pro.  Read more...

Trump takes credit and smirks with glee over Colin Kaepernick's unemployment

While President Trump wants to take credit for the country's job growth numbers whenever it benefits him, there's one man whose unemployment Trump is happy to be responsible for: Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, who stirred up controversy last year when he refused to stand for the national anthem in protest of police brutality and mistreatment of the black community, is a free agent and yet can't seem to even get an interview with any NFL team.

As our own Sam Laird notes, Kaepernick has struggled over the last few seasons, but led the 49ers to the Super Bowl a few years ago and has some pretty decent stats on his sheet. Plus, at 29 years old, Kaepernick has enough gas left in the tank and athletic ability to be helpful for a decent number of teams who could sign him to a smaller, low-risk contract. Read more...

The best FPS multiplayer map ever is now in 'Counter-Strike'

How this high-end hair tools brand blows away the competition

Former president of Mexico slams Donald Trump's (SAD!) approval ratings

Despite the unrelenting amount of political drama that grows more intense with each passing day, life is not a reality television show. But if it were, President Donald Trump would be fired, at least according to one of Trump's most vicious critics.

How does 'The Flash' and 'Supergirl' crossover measure up to TV's best musical episodes?

Not all musical episodes are created equal — some TV shows stage a one-off interlude to mark a milestone, like How I Met Your Mother's 100th episode; some rely on cover songs to give their writers a break, like That '70s Show and Grey's Anatomy — but occasionally, ambition and execution align to create something special, an installment that services the characters, advances the plot and sates our hunger for toe-tapping original tunes and jazzy dance numbers.

Thankfully, The Flash's musical crossover with Supergirl (which airs March 21 on The CW), falls into the latter category.

In addition to featuring pivotal character development for both heroes, the episode features a mix of pitch-perfect covers and two original songs (one penned by La La Land lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the other by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom), all of which will earn a permanent place on your playlist.  Read more...

Planeteers, assemble: 'Captain Planet' is finally going to be available online

If you were a kid in the '90s, chances are your Saturday morning diet consisted of a nutritious blend of cartoon classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman: The Animated Series and — if your parents were trying to sneak some fiber into your bowl — Captain Planet and the Planeteers, centered around a socially-conscious, blue-skinned superhero and his band of ethnically diverse, eco-warrior teen sidekicks.

The show boasted one of the catchiest theme tunes of the era (or at least the only one to squeeze in the word "asunder"); a celebrity voice cast that included Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan and Jeff Goldblum; and a sense of optimism that now seems distant and unattainable. (Gonna take pollution down to zero? Nice try, Cap!) Read more...

It is uncool to stay home during spring break, so the Trump kids are vacationing in Aspen with their families this week. Unfortunately, they seem to be making everyone around them miserable.

Gucci posted a load of weird memes and the internet is cringing hard

A Gucci campaign for watches is probably the last place you'd expect to see the Arthur meme, or a post featuring the words "me vs the guy she says I shouldn’t worry about." But, these beloved memes are the focus of a quirky ad campaign that's currently dividing the internet.

Gucci enlisted the help of "international meme creators" to create a series of Instagram memes for its latest advertising campaign — a collaborative project called #TFWGucci — for timepieces. But, while some people are loving the fashion house's foray into internet humour, many of its Insta followers have been left scratching their heads.  Read more...

Tomi Lahren suspended from TheBlaze over abortion comment backlash

Tomi Lahren, outspoken conservative commentator and host of the nightly talk show, Tomi, has been suspended from TheBlaze following several comments on abortion, CNN reports.

Severe backlash stemmed from the 24-year-old's Friday appearance on The View, in which she told the audience she was pro-choice, contradicting past comments she made passionately bashing abortion.

"I’m someone that’s for limited government. So I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government but I think the government should decide what women do with their bodies," Lahren told members of The View, changing her strict conservative tune on air. Read more...

DJI Phantom 4 Pro + extends drone power and excitement

I often draw comparisons between DJI and Apple. Though one makes phones and tablets and the other drones, they each have reached a design plateau in their respective categories and the updates they now deliver are more polished refinements of existing products than great, genre-breaking leaps.

There is nothing wrong with that, especially when the refined product is as beautifully rendered as the DJI Phantom 4 Pro +.

DJI’s latest prosumer drone is at once comfortingly familiar, while at the same time technically advanced and innovative to be noticeable and appreciated. Read more...

There are 11 newly-classified clouds, and all of them are breathtaking

If you did, you might catch a volutus, or roll cloud, which looks like a tube that appears to be spinning along its horizontal axis. Or perhaps you'll get really lucky, and see a dramatic-looking asperitas cloud, from the Latin word for roughness. These resemble a rough sea's surface, as seen from underwater.

The volutus and asperitas are but two of the 11 new cloud classifications included in the new edition of the International Cloud Atlas that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will publish online on Thursday.

UK bans laptops and big smartphones on airlines from 6 countries

The government has announced a cabin luggage ban on most electronics from six Middle Eastern and African countries, saying the measure was "necessary, effective and proportionate".

The instructions, which cover phones, laptops or tablets larger than 16 cm in length, 9.3 cm width and 1.5 cm depth, will affect six UK carriers, including British Airways and EasyJet, and eight overseas airlines, including Egyptair and Saudia.

"Most smartphones fall within these limits and will continue to be allowed on board. However, devices larger than these dimensions may not be carried in the cabin," the Department for Transport said.  Read more...

According to one unfortunate pup's X-ray, Monopoly is a dog eat dog world

Monopoly is a ruthless, never-ending, game of strategy, chance and immoral spending that ruins friendships and destroys Game Night.

If you play Monopoly, be prepared to waste at least four hours of your life getting yelled at by your friends and just regretting everything that lead you to this point.

We're assuming that this dog lost all of his hotels in a bad deal and got so frustrated that it drove the pup to ingest one of its own kind.

We wouldn't doubt if this dog sent itself to the vet just so it could get out of playing Monopoly and stop the game entirely by eating arguably the best token: the Scottie dog. The X-ray posted on Reddit by user brainyblond proves that the dog was so desperate for an escape that it rather spend its time at the absolute last place any dog wants to go.  Read more...
