Ride-hailing in Austin: Life without Uber and Lyft is a fun sh*tshow

SXSW is known for having breakout apps of the year. There was Twitter, Foursquare and, most recently, Meerkat.

But this year it's not about anything innovative in tech that's got every attendee pulling out their smartphone and opening the app store.

In Austin, Texas, there's no Uber or Lyft. To make the 25-minute drive from the airport to downtown Austin, you have to either rent a car, hail a taxi, or download a new app.

And yes, you read that right: Not even Lyft

In Austin, for almost the last year, the two biggest ride-hailing companies in the United States haven't operated. It's a complicated tale of citizens versus corporations, of distaste for a duopoly and annoyance for not complying to town rules, that's left Austin as one of the few areas in the U.S. where "Let's get an Uber" just doesn't fly.  Read more...

Mark Hamill shared 'perhaps the very first' photo of Luke Skywalker and it's a real nostalgia trip

Hop inside the X-Wing, y'all. Mark Hamill is about to take you to Nostalgia Town.

On Saturday, the Star Wars star and prolific Trump impersonator took a break from staring at stuff on Ahch-To to share a throwback photo from the filming of Episode IV: A New Hope

"Taken in Tunisia early morning Day #1 waiting for my 1st shot (emerging from home for robot auction) — Perhaps the very 1st #Luke Pic," he wrote.

Aw, look at original trilogy Luke. He's not quite a boy, not quite a Jedi; he's just hangin' out on Tatooine, ready to shoot some womp rats, farm some moisture, and go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters. Read more...

Can the ClassPass model actually work? Well, the CEO just stepped down, so...

On arrival, ClassPass took the fitness world—and the tech world—by storm, when it debuted its subscription service for boutique fitness classes. These days its model is less certain, especially now that its founding champion just stepped down.

CEO Payal Kadakia co-founded ClassPass in 2013, with a deal that let subscribers pay one fee to attend as many yoga classes, spin classes, and barre classes as they liked. Co-founder Mary Biggins even went on to apply that model to MealPal (formerly MealPass), which offers a similar deal for workday lunches.

In the years since, ClassPass has had to up its prices and do away with its unlimited plan to stay afloat. Where it once offered unlimited classes for $99 a month, it now charges $135 for 10 classes a month.  Read more...

'Game of Thrones' Robb Stark goes to space for Amazon's new sci-fi show

Yes, there is life after dragons and frost giants, and for Game of Thrones' Robb Stark (Richard Madden) that life continues in space as, yes, an interstellar priest.

That's the premise of Amazon's new streaming series Oasis, a science fiction tale based on the novel The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber.

There's not much available online in the way of a trailer, other than a super-brief snippet tossed into the middle of Amazon's other pilots, which makes it seem like Amazon is playing to its installed base instead of trying to draw in new viewers. (Or maybe it's just that they still haven't figured out how to compete with Netflix yet.) Read more...

What's Disneybounding? Meet the newest, semi-cosplay fashion trend you've never heard of

There's cosplaying—and then there's Disneybounding.

The increasingly popular activity, which some deem "closet cosplay," is when Disney fans dress up as their favorite characters using contemporary fashion.

With the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast hitting theaters this weekend, we decided to take a closer look at Disney's subculture of fashion.

So...how did Disneybounding even start?

The fashion trend began with blogger Leslie Kay (pictured above).

She came up with the term as she was getting ready for a trip to Walt Disney World.  Read more...

April the giraffe's unborn baby is a cash giraffe

April the giraffe's overdue baby bump is turning into the Super Bowl of giraffe pregnancies.

For the past five weeks, more than 80 million people have watched a YouTube livestream as April's unborn calf takes its sweet time in her womb.

Now, Animal Adventure Park, the upstate New York where the animal lives, is in the market for an advertiser, TMZ reports.

And with April's newfound celebrity status, that spot is worth big money.

The stream's original sponsor, Mazuri Exotic Animal Nutrition, locked down the rights for peanuts—or you know, whatever giraffes eat—back when everyone thought the baby would just be a one-and-done deal. The zoo asked only that the company keep the animal fed in return for the advertising space in the livestream description. Read more...

Twitter mourns the millions of brackets lost with Wisconsin's upset March Madness win

There's been a great disturbance in the force-of-brackets. As if millions were suddenly thrown in the trash.

Chances are: Your bracket's probably worthless, or at least one-fourth worthless, now that the Wisconsin Badgers took down defending champion Villanova in the second round of the tournament.

Number-eight seed University of Wisconsin came out of nowhere to unseat the top dog 65-62.

College basketball fans gathered on Twitter Saturday to pay their respects for the fallen brackets.

Meet Roadie, the Ludacris-backed Uber for rideshare-transporting your stuff

In our Uber-powered world, people call upon strangers to take them wherever their typing fingers take them. For Uber, riders are in control of Points A and B—drivers are glorified chauffeurs.

With Roadie, it's put in reverse (just to back it up). The startup, backed by rapper-turned-movie star-turned-tech entrepreneur Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, shows people opportunities to deliver items—be it a 7-foot-tall statue of Jar Jar Binks, or someone's fluffy puppy.

"There’s an unbelievable natural resource, bigger than San Francisco, made up of all the places that people go every day, 250 million vehicles, a billion square footage of capacity every day that hits the road," said Marc Gorlin, CEO and founder of Roadie.  Read more...

In the hours following his death, musicians, celebrities, and loving fans shared tributes to and memories of the man who pioneered a genre.

Drake dropped a bunch of new music and we have A LOT to talk about

Please don't call it an album. Drake's latest "project" or "playlist," titled More Life, premiered unexpectedly Saturday on OVO Sound Radio, sending the internet into a spin.

Surprising and delighting the masses, More Life was not an Apple Music exclusive like 2015's Views. It was immediately available to stream on Spotify and other services.

With 22 tracks to choose from, there was plenty there for Drake fans to process. Not least, a track featuring presidential hopeful, Kanye West himself. The song, "Glow," is already being hailed as a standout. The evidence? The following gifs: Read more...

'The Flash' will face a very different kind of villain in Season 4

After three seasons of speedy villains, The Flash will hit the brakes in Season 4.

"Next season we're not going to have a speedster [as the main villain]," showrunner Andrew Kreisberg revealed during a panel at Los Angeles' PaleyFest on Saturday, where the stars and producers of The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow were gathered to celebrate the four CW shows.

But before Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) can slow things down, he needs to defeat this season's Big Bad. That would be Savitar, a self-proclaimed speed god, who is threatening to kill Barry's soulmate, Iris West (Candice Patton).  Read more...

Of course Drake admits to drunk texting J-Lo on 'More Life'

For a fleeting, exquisite moment in December, we all thought Drake and J-Lo might be dating or at least collaborating.

They cuddledThey selfied. They reminded us we are on this Earth for only a heartbeat; there is only loving and being loved. And yet, when Drake's new "playlist" More Life appeared on Saturday, there was no new track featuring Ms. Lopez. How cruel.

She's gone, but not forgotten. In the opening track "Free Smoke," Drake raps that he sends J-Lo messages while under the influence. Apparently, she has declined to update him with her new digits. Read more...

Sports betting is starting to look a lot more like Wall Street

Your March Madness office pool is like the Charles Schwab of sports betting. Beyond those hastily chosen brackets, there’s an entire cottage industry of sports betting that’s increasingly resembling Wall Street.

In 2016, total sports wagers in Nevada were $4.5 billion, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. With that much at stake, gamblers are turning to more sophisticated tools that involve complex data analysis to achieve better odds, real-time wagering during games, fund managers who pool bets and risk management practices. The result is something akin to day trading. Here’s how: Read more...

This one hack lets you post Live Photos on Instagram

One of the coolest additions to the iPhone 6S was Live Photos. The moving pictures inhabit the space between GIF and video but act more like something out of the wizarding world of Harry Potter, giving iPhone users even more of an excuse to take album upon album of pics.

While social networks like Facebook, Tumblr and Google Photos supported the animated snapshots shortly after launch, photo-centric Instagram still hasn't added direct functionality well over a year afterward. We've been given plenty of new features in the meantime – some good like Snapchat-cloned Stories, some bad like photo albums – but we still can't share Live Photos.  Read more...

Why itchiness is contagious

Mice, just like humans and monkeys, will start itching if they see a compatriot scratching itself, a new study finds.

The finding is the first evidence that "socially contagious itching" exists in rodents, the researchers said. Moreover, the researchers' neural analysis revealed that socially contagious itching is hardwired into the mouse brain.

"The mice got itchy when the other mice scratched [themselves]," said study senior researcher Zhoufeng Chen, the director at the Center for the Study of Itch at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "Just like a human being."  Read more...

Before email, there was V-mail: The WWII program that scanned letters onto microfilm

Image: Fort Missoula Museum

Shortly after entering World War II, the United States military found that shipping and delivering immense volumes of mail to and from servicemen overseas would be a challenge, especially given the need to reserve cargo space for critical weapons and supplies.

The solution, based on the British Airgraph Service, was called Victory Mail — V-Mail for short.

The Eastman Kodak-designed service launched on June 15, 1942 and became the primary method of communication between soldiers on the front lines and family at home.

A V-mail letter would be written on a piece of standardized stationery, then photographed and transferred onto a roll of microfilm. Upon reaching its destination, the letter would be blown back up to a readable size and printed. Read more...

Shaq is a flat-Earther too, apparently

Now Shaq is doing it.

Is it possible that current and former members of the NBA have mutually agreed to troll the planet — which is provably spherical in shape — with preposterous flat-Earth theories? The only other explanation is that they believe it, and just ... noNo.

Retired NBA star and current media personality Shaquille O'Neal is the latest pro basketball player to assert that our definitely globe-shaped planet is, in fact, a flat surface. His proof: when he drives between Florida and California, "it's flat to me." Read more...

Not everyone's thrilled Cheerios gave away 1.5 billion wildflower seeds to save the bees

Cheerios' recent campaign to give away flower seeds was both wildly popular and, no surprise, controversial.

General Mills, maker of the O-shaped oat cereal, said it initially planned to dole out 100 million wildflower seeds to customers who requested them.

The goal? Boost the ranks of North America's imperiled bees. Cheerios instead gave away 1.5 billion seeds, depleting its entire stockpile.

"In one week, the campaign not only reached its goal, but surpassed it by an un-bee-lievable amount," the company announced on March 17, causing a universal groan. Read more...

Wow, some stranger just gave us Trump's tax return and it's really weird

Viewers tuning into The Rachel Maddow Show on March 14 were disappointed to see, after much hype and 20 minutes of on-air build up, that an expected bombshell turned out to be a giant dud.

Maddow saw a surge of viewers to her program, following teaser tweets about obtaining President Trump's tax returns. Maddow eventually revealed two pages of Trump's 2005 tax return. The forms showed that Trump earned $150 million that year and paid $38 million in taxes. Maddow's source, financial journalist David Cay Johnston, claimed to have received the documents in his mailbox.

Despite the tax return not yielding anything of real significance, Mr. Trump still went out of his way denounce the findings as "fake news." Read more...

Tale as old as time: Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' debuts at $170 million

I hope you like seeing Disney's animated classics turned into live-action features. They're not going away anytime soon.

We have Beauty and the Beast to thank for that. Disney's flesh-and-blood (and CG) remake of the 1991 hit opened at the top of the domestic box office with an estimated $170 million. That's more than the animated feature earned during its entire theatrical run in the U.S., which ended at $145.9 million.

Beauty's opening weekend success was evident early on when it logged a $64.1 million opening day. That was enough to give it the third best start of all time for a March movie, after Batman V Superman ($81.6 million) and The Hunger Games ($67.3 million). Read more...

Ellen has the best reaction to 5-year-old's unexpected Trump burn

It was supposed to be a cute moment The Ellen DeGeneres Show show is known for. Instead, 5-year-old geography genius Nate Seltzer laid down some hot fire on President Donald Trump.

While answering a gamut of questions from Ellen about his self-drawn world map, he was asked who was standing inside Russia. And that's when little Nate dropped the big burn: "Trump."

Ok, so the kid's got well-timed jokes. But his actual drawing of Trump is also pretty good because it makes Trump look like a angry bridge troll.  Read more...

Earth just had its second-warmest February since 1880

As the saying goes: Another month, another disconcerting report from top U.S. climate agencies.

Last month was Earth's second-hottest February on record since at least 1880, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported

At the same time, the extent of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctica hit record monthly lows.

In February 2017, the average global temperature was 1.76 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average of 53.9 degrees, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information said late last week.  Read more...
