Casey Affleck didn't mention Ben in his Golden Globes speech and Ben took it personally

Brotherly love is a fickle thing.

After winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a drama, Casey Affleck's speech was heart warming as he thanked many people for his success with one notable exception: his older brother Ben. Well, as it is an older siblings' job to humiliate their siblings, the older Affleck did not let the snub get away unpunished.

He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night and proceeded to tell some truly shocking facts about his younger brother including the fact that Casey did not brush his teeth from ages 10 to 14.

After watching, we're sure people who have no siblings will cherish their embarrassment free lives. Especially if they have to give an acceptance speech. Read more...

Samsung might have just confirmed Bixby, the next ridiculously-named AI assistant

We've gotten used to calling on Siri, Cortana and Google to answer questions, give directions and tell really bad jokes — and it looks like yet another oddly-named digital assistant is about to join the roster.

According to a screenshot of the Korean version of Samsung Pay's beta page captured by SamMobile Monday, Samsung's upcoming AI program will be named Bixby. The name appeared as a category available for selection on a drop-down menu that appeared on the site.

This might confirm the speculation that followed Samsung's trademark filings for the name and another, Kestra, back in November. While the company confirmed that an AI assistant will be included in the upcoming Galaxy S8 back in November, details have been scarce.  Read more...

A powerful group of women will run from NYC to the Women's March on Washington

The Women's March on Washington is fast-approaching, and if you don't already have travel plans booked to D.C. you might consider running there.

Alison Desir is a running coach, the founder of Harlem Run, and a contributor to Women’s Running magazine. After she reflected on the negative implications Donald Trump's political administration could have for women, members of the LQBTQ community and America as a whole, she decided it was time to take a stand — or should we say, a sprint.

'Pokémon Go' banned in China over public safety concerns

The world's most populous country will not be getting Pokémon Go

Apparently, China thinks the game is just too dangerous to allow due to public safety concerns, according to Reuters.

China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television cites "a high level of responsibility to national security and the safety of people's lives and property" and a "threat to geographical information security and the threat to transport and the personal safety of consumers" as reasons for Pokémon Go's ban.

In other words, China thinks you're just not responsible enough to play the game. Because, who knows, you might fall off a cliff, crash your car into a school or cop car, or stampede through a public park just to catch a rare Pokémon. No, no, no, you can't be trusted to play Pokémon Go. Read more...

Trump asked a prominent anti-vaxxer to lead a commission on vaccines

President-elect Donald J. Trump has asked   anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to chair a commission on vaccine safety, Kennedy said after meeting with Trump Tuesday.

This appointment is certain to rattle the scientific community, since Kennedy is a well-known vaccine advocate who falsely believes that vaccine ingredients cause autism. This is a claim that scientists have debunked time and time again.

"President-elect Trump has some doubts about the current vaccine policies and he has questions about it," Kennedy said after the meeting, according to a pool report.

Kind mailman builds ramp for neighborhood senior dog

Are mailmen and dogs even enemies anymore?

That is certainly not the case for Boulder, Colorado letter carrier Jeff Kramer and his friend Tashi, an elderly black lab. Kramer, who says hi to Tashi every day on his route, recently installed a ramp that helps the 14-year-old pup get from his house to his front yard.

"It's incredible," Karen Dimetrosky, Tashi's owner, told the Daily Camera in Boulder. "I can't imagine not having the ramp now. It's the only way he gets in and out."

Kramer initially constructed the ramp several years ago for his own senior dog, Odie. But when Odie passed away, it sat unused — until Kramer decided to deliver the lumber to Dimetrosky and (eventually) assemble the ramp himself. Read more...

LG G6 rumored to have an unusual, QHD+ screen

After the not-very-successful, modular G5, LG is changing its strategy. The company's new flagship, the LG G6, will not be modular at all; according to new reports, it will feature a new, waterproof design with a large screen and very small bezels.

Majority of Americans want Trump to delete his Twitter account, poll finds

Twitter binges are Donald Trump's lifeline — often the thing that gives him comfort after someone says something remotely critical about him.

But apparently most Americans are not fans of the late night and early morning ramblings, according to a recent poll by Quinnipiac University.

In fact, 64 percent of voters polled said the soon-to-be U.S. president should just delete his account altogether. And young people are even more tired of it — 71 percent of those between ages 18-34 say Trump should close his Twitter account.

It's worth noting just 899 voters nationwide were polled between Jan. 5-9. But even Republicans weren't exactly lining up to defend Trump's love of Twitter; just 49 percent said he should keep his account. And the Republicans polled were pretty much the only ones who kind of supported Trump keeping his Twitter account.  Read more...

Check out these awesome clouds, ruined by conspiracy theorists

Sometimes, you really can't win on social media.

On Sunday, the airline Virgin Australia posted some photos of a stunning cloud formation on its Facebook page. Captured on a recent flight from Perth to Adelaide, the pictures are of wave clouds, which are caused when air encounters an obstruction like a mountain and is forced over the object.

"It's like skipping a stone across water," Neil Bennett from the WA Bureau of Meteorology told AAP

"The wave clouds are caused by air being forced up over a range of hills and performing a wave like motion until it settles down, which causes the gaps. The air goes up, cools, then bounces back up again." Read more...

FIFA may have just ruined the World Cup, and fans aren't happy

FIFA made what had previously been floated official on Tuesday by voting to expand the World Cup field from 32 to 48 teams beginning with the 2026 tournament.

In doing so, it just might have ruined the greatest spectacle in sports.

Whispers of an expansion to the World Cup field have been making their way through the soccer universe for months. The primary knee-jerk reactions to a bigger field (the World Cup was last expanded in 1998) boil down primarily to two fears. First, that the tournament's quality will be diluted by including less accomplished teams. Second, that its format will be rendered obtuse and awkward if grown beyond the convenient current format of 32 nations.  Read more...

Moving from his achievements in office to the varied challenges facing the country, it took in everything from race relations to climate change to fake news and social bubbles - with nods to Atticus Finch and George Washington along the way.

It was near the end, though, when he talked of his love for Michelle and his pride in his kids - and the bromance with Biden of course - that things really reached fever pitch among the impassioned crowd.

The company announced a pair of significant changes to its privacy management and settings on Tuesday. They’ll arrive as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update scheduled to ship this spring. However, Windows Insiders (those on the beta program) can download and try it now.

In a blog post explaining the changes, Microsoft unveiled a new web-based privacy dashboard where Microsoft service users will be able to see and manage the data the company has collected. From the page, Microsoft account holders will be able to clear their browser, Bing search and location activity. They’ll also be able to clear out whatever Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, has saved from their interactions. Read more...

Facebook blocks posts in Thailand that the government has blacklisted

Facebook is now blocking some posts in Thailand based on what the government deems is unsavoury.

On Tuesday, journalist Andrew MacGregor Marshall noticed that some of his posts and those from fellow dissident Somsak Jeamteerasakul were not showing up for users accessing Facebook in Thailand.

This post he made appears to users outside the country, but shows up as a removed post if accessed from a Thai IP addressMashable also used a Thai proxy server to confirm Marshall's allegation.

The post carries pictures of a woman Marshall claims is King Vajiralongkorn's mistress. In the pictures, the woman is in her underwear and seen paying respects in downtown Bangkok to the statue of the late King Chulalongkorn, who passed away in 1910.  Read more...

This bank has some really weird security questions on its website

Often, security questions on websites aren't as difficult as security researchers would like.

An Indian bank may have addressed that issue, but it reportedly took a weird route to get there.

Journalist Rohin Dharmakumar was greeted by some very strange questions when registering with the State Bank of India.

In addition to typical questions such as one’s favourite sports commentator or where they met their spouse, the state-run bank has also shown interest in the website "you rarely visit" and the "plant you like or dislike." The bank also asks about your "neighbours pet’s name," if that works for you.   Read more...

Apple enhances security options for its CareKit apps

Apple is upping security options for its health apps.

The tech giant has partnered with the security firm Tresorit to offer developers using Apple's CareKit platform increased privacy options, helping reach HIPAA compliance.

Tresorit's security technology, called ZeroKit, will offer user authentication for patients and healthcare workers, end-to-end encryption of health data, and "zero knowledge" sharing of health data, in which data isn't shared with any service as it transfers.

End-to-end encryption is used for cloud storage, messaging and other services but hasn't been widely adopted in healthcare apps, Tresorit senior vice president David Szabo told Mashable. Data is encrypted before it is uploaded to the cloud and that encryption key never leaves the user's device. Read more...

Drone video shows stunning fields of green after rain in Australia's Outback

There are patches of lush green growth and water, a rare sight in an area more used to drought.

The nearby Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park had been closed temporarily thank to the unusual rain, but reopened on Dec 27. Rangers have been working to restore tracks in the park that were damaged by water.

Watch Seth Meyers grill Kellyanne Conway better than most journalists do

With 150 million daily active users, Instagram Stories is launching ads

Just five months after its debut, Instagram Stories — and the 150 million people using it every day — are no longer free real estate.

Instagram will begin inserting video ads into the Snapchat-like Stories experience and add more analytics features for businesses, the company announced on Wednesday.

The news marks one of the fastest introductions of ads into a product for Facebook, which typically plays the long game in monetizing new features. Facebook bought Instagram in April 2012 for $1 billion, then took almost three years to introduce ads across the platform.

The introduction of Stories was met with some skepticism, particularly as it seemed a direct clone of Snapchat's Stories feature. That hasn't done much to temper consumer interest. Instagram announced on Wednesday that 150 million people use Stories every day.  Read more...

This bold campaign aims to celebrate audacious dreams

Dreams come in a variety of packages. Sometimes, they’re goals of going back to school, starting a company or going on an exotic adventure. Sometimes, they’re focused on making an impact within a community or on a global scale. Often, there’s a long road between the first inklings of a vision and the reality of bringing a lofty goal to life.

Or sometimes, as with Lisa McKenzie, a small business owner in Covington, Louisiana, this road is a runway.

McKenzie is on a mission to help cancer survivors take back their confidence with You Night, a six- to eight-week program that leads women survivors of cancer on an emotionally restorative journey and culminates with an empowering runway event.  Read more...

One viral photo captured the public's attention on Syria — and lost it almost as quickly

[Editor's note: This story contains disturbing images.]

Syria had been embroiled in more than three years of civil war when, in September 2015, the photo of the lifeless body of Aylan Kurdi lying face down on a beach in Turkey was suddenly everywhere. Thousands of Syrians had already died in the conflict, with little attention paid to the issue. Now, the entire world was watching.

At least, for a little while.

A new study has found that this photo had a tremendous impact on the amount of attention given to the Syrian war, spurring interest in the conflict and generating a spike in donations. Unfortunately, that interest waned almost as quickly. Read more...

Woody Harrelson joins young Han Solo movie

Woody Harrelson is confirmed to join the young Han Solo Star Wars movie.

The Hollywood Reporter noted on Jan. 3 that Harrelson was in talks to join the film as the young Solo's mentor figure, which sounds very similar to his role as Haymitch Abernathy in the Hunger Games franchise.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller said in a statement. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.” Read more...

This is the CNN reporter that just got into a yelling match with Donald Trump

Donald Trump made CNN one of his favorite targets of media bashing during the election. At Wednesday's press conference, he took the opportunity to express his rage at one reporter in particular: Jim Acosta.

Acosta is CNN's senior White House correspondent and was present at Trump's first press conference since winning the presidential election. Trump railed on CNN for publishing a story that claimed the president-elect had been briefed by leaders in the intelligence community on claims that Russia held sensitive information bout him.

Trump vehemently denied the reports and attacked CNN and BuzzFeed, leading to Acosta's attempt at asking a question. Read more...

In stunning exchange, Trump refuses to answer question from CNN reporter

From the very beginning of Trump's contentious press conference on Wednesday, the president-elect expressed his contempt for news organizations like CNN and Buzzfeed.

PEOTUS' ire appears to have been provoked by a story published by CNN last night, which referenced a memo alleging that Trump may have been compromised by Russia. When CNN reporter Jim Acosta attempted to ask Trump a question today, Trump shut the senior white house correspondent down, accusing him of publishing fake news.

Acosta made repeated attempts to have the president-elect answer a question, but Trump spoke over the reporter and referred to him as "rude."  Read more...

Donald Trump addressed alleged lurid sexual acts by saying he's a 'germaphobe'

Donald Trump has some news for everyone who showered him with pee jokes: he's a germaphobe.

During the president elect's press conference at Trump Tower on Wednesday, Trump responded to BuzzFeed's publishing of an unverified intelligence dossier on Tuesday. The document made several shocking allegations about his close ties to the Russian government, along with one very disturbing claim that he hired prostitutes to participate in a sex act on a hotel bed.

Among the accusations released in the dossier, Trump was said to have hired prostitutes for a "golden shower" party — which essentially just a shower of urine — on a bed in a Moscow Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Read more...

Sorry, Trump, everyone on Twitter still cares about your tax returns

Donald Trump gave his first press conference in seven months on Wednesday, and of course it was dominated by Tuesday's bombshell reports alleging Russian interference in the election and hidden cameras capturing certain liquid-based fetishes.

There was another issue, though, that was very much on everyone's mind even if Trump wouldn't admit it: his tax returns.

Speculation was rife that the binders full of paper on the dais would offer a torturously belated an insight into Trump's financial affairs. Alas, it was not to be. In fact, Trump insisted that no one outside the media could care less about the issue. Read more...

Report on Russian hacking suggests Telegram may not be as secure as you think

In the midst of all the fallout that came in the wake of Buzzfeed's publication of an unverified dossier that claims President-Elect Donald Trump has definite ties to Russia was an uncomfortable revelation for security-minded people everywhere: one of the most trusted encrypted messaging apps might not be as safe as its users think.

Telegram, one of the apps used by people around the world for secure messaging, was cited in the report as having been compromised by the FSB (AKA the Russian secret police).

According to a confidential source speaking in June 2016, the FSB flagged Telegram as being of "especial concern," which led to the organization focusing its efforts on cracking the system's security: Read more...

Obama's right: Social media has damaged our democracy

It’s time to burst social media bubbles before they swallow democracy whole.

In his presidential farewell address Tuesday night, Barack Obama—the first president of the social media era—offered one of the most succinct criticisms ever heard on a mass scale of our social media-obsessed culture, and its effect on democracy:

The president added that the ability to channel media for every taste is playing right into the rise of partisanship. And without ever uttering the words “fake news,” Obama tied this isolationist social media bent to the steady rise of fake news.

What Obama said about neighborhoods, college campuses and places of worship is true. In fact, it’s always been true. Read more...

Apple once envisioned the iPhone with an iPod click wheel and it was horrible

The iPhone we know and love today could have been very different, and maybe even a total flop, if Steve Jobs had picked a different interface for it.

A new video published by Apple leaker Sonny Dickson shows off an early-stage version of "Acorn OS," an iPod-based interface for the iPhone that Apple was working on before deciding to go with the now-ubiquitous icon-based interface.

The story goes like this: Apple had two teams working on what would eventually become iOS (née iPhone OS).

One team, under Tony Fadell, the "father of the iPod" was working on an operating system based on the iPod interface and controlled with a click wheel. Meanwhile, another team, under ex-Apple senior vice president of iOS software Scott Forstall, was tasked with creating an icon-based interface. Read more...

An important reminder on Donald Trump and 'fake news'

President-elect Donald Trump just slammed BuzzFeed—one of the most prominent, visible media organizations in the world—as "a failing pile of garbage" during a Wednesday morning press conference.

The venom is a direct response to the news outlet's controversial publication of an unverified dossier alleging close ties between Trump and Russia. The report contained unproven claims of a highly personal nature—some involving bizarre interactions with sex workers in Moscow—and it's dominated the news cycle since its publication Tuesday night. TMZ reports that on Monday, a woman walked into the store, gathered up clothing and perfume, then, well, dashed away from the scene in a silver car. She is reportedly still at large.

Secretary of state nominee Rex Tillerson shows his true colors on climate change

President-elect Donald J. Trump's secretary of state nominee Rex Tillerson has been a bit of an enigma when it comes to his views on climate change. Unlike the nominees to head the Environmental Protection Agency, or the Department of Energy, he does not neatly fall into the climate denier camp.

In fact, under his tenure as CEO of ExxonMobil, the company acknowledged the need to address global warming, endorsed a carbon tax and publicly supported the Paris Climate Agreement.

However, these moves came after decades of work to research the science behind climate change and then suppress, confuse and distort that science to protect the company's business interests.  Read more...

Volkswagen to pay $4.3 billion after pleading guilty on emissions scandal

Volkswagen AG took a major step toward resolving one of the darkest chapters in its history Wednesday, pleading guilty to an emissions-cheating scandal and agreeing to pay $4.3 billion in criminal and civil charges as the U.S. announced charges against five new individuals.

As part of its settlement, VW pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and using false statements to import cars to the U.S. VW executives Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Jens Hadler and Richard Dorenkamp were among those charged with conspiracy.

The court filings detail a scheme in which the German automaker deceived regulators and customers for years, and dozens of employees destroyed documents, even after the scandal broke in September 2015. Read more...

'Game of Thrones' fans imagine what would happen if the U.S. army went to Westeros

I've said it a hundred times, but I'll say it again. If Jon Snow wants to rule Westeros he should just get a bunch of guns.

Reddit seems to have the same idea. A thread on the Game of Thrones fan subreddit r/gameofthrones asks the theoretical question: What would happen if a brigade of U.S. Army soldiers arrived in Westeros?

Beyond the difficult situation of the White Walkers, the answer is obviously, "The people with big guns would kill the people with no guns" but it's still intersting to think about.

Redditor Headhunt23 describes a situation in which only minor conflicts dot an otherwise total takeover. Read more...

John Mayer really wants to join Fifth Harmony

Since Camila Cabello's dramatic departure from Fifth Harmony, there's been an empty space just waiting to be filled in the group.

John Mayer might be the perfect person for the job and with some tweets Tuesday night, he might have unwillingly planted the idea in folks' minds.

Last night, the guitarist and songwriter launched into a series of confusing, albeit hilarious, tweets battling with an unverified John Mayer account and experimenting with threads.

In the middle of it all, he hopped onto the #BeTheFifthChallenge, a hashtag from fans imagining who could replace Cabello. Essentially, he was arguing with himself about the brilliant girl group. Classic.  Read more...

Good ol' Penthouse offers $1 million for Trump golden shower tape

And who said investigative journalism was dead?

Last night, Buzzfeed published a mind-blowing 35-page memo alleging that Donald Trump may have been compromised by the Russians because of, among other things, a sex tape featuring him having sex with Russian prostitutes. Trump, who allegedly encouraged the workers to urinate on a bed, called the report "fake news" — and now Penthouse is offering $1 million for the tape.

The memo had been circulating for months among journalists and politicians, but was never published in its entirety because the allegations couldn't be independently verified. So who better than Penthouse, a softcore porn magazine, to do the hard, real work of paying for the tape? Read more...

India threatens to expel Amazon employees for selling Indian flag doormats

India takes a lot of pride in its national flag, and Amazon is learning that the hard way today.

India's outspoken external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj lambasted Amazon on Wednesday after the Seattle-based ecommerce company the company’s Canadian store was found to be selling doormats depicting India’s flag.

The 62-year-old minister threatened to expel all foreign employees of Amazon from the country if it did not remove the controversial doormats from its store.

Swaraj also demanded the Seattle-based company to offer an "unconditional apology," and "withdraw" all "products insulting our national flag immediately," she tweeted Wednesday, urging the Indian High Commission in Canada to consider the matter at "the highest level. Read more...
