Mars, Venus and the moon are having a cosmic meet-up this week

The moon, Venus and Mars are getting close in the night sky this week.

Mars and Venus will appear just next to the crescent moon in a coincidental planetary meet-up Tuesday.

You should be able to see the trio (assuming you have good weather) by looking west Tuesday evening, according to a NASA skywatching video.

Mars, which looks much like a red-tinged star, should appear just below the moon, with brightly-shining Venus just below that. Both will be near the constellation Aquarius.

Unfortunately for millions of people in the U.S. Northeast, clouds will likely obscure views of the three cosmic objects.  Read more...

Rockettes chairman encourages concerned dancers to be 'tolerant of intolerance'

Who knew that the New York City Rockettes would become one of American culture's loudest (and most sequined) voices of dissent?

Just prior to Christmas, several of the dancers came forward with concerns about being forced to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration. Though Madison Square Garden Company, who produces the Rockettes, later clarified that the dancers would not be required to perform, the company's executive chairman, James Dolan, recently spoke to concerned dancers and encouraged them to be more "tolerant," according to an exclusive published by Marie Claire

Ronda Rousey still made $62,500 per second in her brutal UFC 207 loss

Ronda Rousey may have lost UFC 207 in under a minute, but she still walked away with a pretty incredible payday, earning $62,500 per second.

In her first fight since November 2015, Rousey was no match for reigning bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, who, by comparison, notched $5,208 per second.

Rousey's total $3 million ties Conor McGregor for the highest disclosed purse in UFC history, according to MMA Fighting

Watch Joe Biden get dissed by a baby

Joe Biden is still vice president for the next 17 days and with so little time left, he didn't disappoint during a big day on Capitol Hill Monday.

The new U.S. Congress was sworn in to office Monday, with Biden presiding over the Senate's ceremony and meeting with senators and their families. But when the vice president posed for pictures with the family of Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), something unexpected happened.

As the family lined up on either side of Biden, he became enamored with Burr's granddaughter, talking to her, making some noises, and leaning in for a quick kiss on the head — until the young child ducked away from Biden's gentle attempt at affection.  Read more...

A developer built a 'Law & Order: SVU' episode generator and it's perfect

Face it: 395 (and counting) episodes of solid crime television isn't enough. We need more Law & Order: SVU.

Luckily, developer Scott Luptowski has a solution with episode descriptions generated by a computer program.

Sure, SVU can seem slightly robotic already, but to be fair there are only so many variations of "I want a lawyer" that you can write before you're just saying nonsense.

After building a script to pull episode descriptions from Hulu, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, Luptowski used a tool called a markov chain to automatically predict text based on the existing episode summaries. Luptowski told Mashable in a DM that he then ran the episodes through the chain hundreds of times to find the funniest results. Read more...

7 tech innovations coming to your next smartphone

Boring or not, smartphones aren't going away anytime soon. Phones — specifically, Android phones — hit a new high in 2016, finally competing with the iPhone in many of the areas they usually fell short.

But they're about to get even better.

Like Intel's tight grip on the PC world, Qualcomm powers most of the world's best smartphones. To kick off CES 2017, the chipmaker detailed its newest processor, the Snapdragon 835, and outlined how it's going to push mobile tech forward in 2017.

The new Snapdragon 835 systems-on-chips (SoCs) will be produced using a 10-nanometer process, downsizing from the 14-nanometer process used in pre-existing Qualcomm chips, thus fitting even more transistors — and more processing power — on a chip. Read more...

Julian Assange says once again that Russia is not Wikileaks' source

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is claiming again that a Russian-connected source didn't leak hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee to his organization. That's contrary to the U.S. intelligence community's recent conclusions.

That assertion and Wikileaks' increasingly partisan rhetoric has at least one Republican pundit, Sean Hannity, changing his tune toward the controversial figure.

“We can say, we have said repeatedly over the last two months, that our source is not the Russian government. And it is not a state party,” Assange says in a new interview with Fox News' Hannity, the first part of which will air on Tuesday night. Read more...

The 'Michael Jordan of darts' will not be deterred, even by a trophy thief in foam fingers

Professional darts seems like the chillest sport from afar. You sit around and drink alcohol while other people play a pub game with preternatural competency, then, every once in while, a guy wearing giant foam fingers storms the stage and tries to steal the trophy.

Actually, scratch that last part. It's not traditional — but it is what just happened at the World Darts Championship in London.

Before Michael van Gerwen of the Netherlands won Monday's championship, a spectator wearing a suit — and a pair of those weird, giant foam fingers that have somehow wormed their way into the sports world — ran onto the stage and tried to make off with the trophy.  Read more...

Will universal basic income mean you can quit your job?

It’s not a new concept. In the late 1790s, American statesman Thomas Paine called for a universal payment of £15 per year to all his countrymen in exchange for the right to hold private property.

First suggested over 200 years ago, the idea of universal basic income never quite went away, and in many circles, it’s actually picking up steam.

Progressive Finland is officially the first sovereign nation to put it to the test. Two-thousand Finnish citizens, who were selected randomly from those currently receiving unemployment benefits or an income subsidy, will now receive €560 ($587) a month. Everyone gets the same amount of money whether they work or not. The pilot will run for the next two years, and may eventually expand to include all Finns.  Read more...

This digestive tracker can help you control your farts

LAS VEGAS — Nothing can stop you in your tracks faster than a bad case of the tummy rumbles.

We've all had an unfortunate bout of indigestion but this new digestive tracker may be able to help find out what foods are more compatible with your body.

The AIRE by FoodMarble is a portable app-connected gadget that is able to analyze the amount of gas in your bloodstream the way a breathalyzer would monitor your blood alcohol level. According to FoodMarble, certain foods that don't gel with your system cause a buildup of gas in your gut.

Tesla falls short on promised car deliveries for the year

Tesla has ultimately failed to roll out the number of cars it had repeatedly projected it would in 2016.

The electric automaker said Tuesday that it delivered just 76,230 of its Model S and Model X vehicles in the last year, undershooting its promised 80,000 to 90,000.

The company blamed the shortfall on production challenges related to an upgrade of its in-car Autopilot system — a set of sensors, radars and cameras designed to help guide drivers with partial automation. The problem lasted from October until early December. Read more...

Let Tom Hardy soothe you with the best bedtime story you've ever heard

International treasure Tom Hardy may be best known for his intense, often laconic characters in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, but the British thesp is also a father and a dog lover — which explains his latest role.

Now you can watch the NBA in VR using Google's Daydream View

Samsung isn't the only company letting people watch live NBA games in virtual reality.

Now, users of Google's Daydream View headset will be able to watch, too.

Google is now getting in on the game, which could help it secure a larger piece of the rapidly growing mobile VR market. This cord-cutting company picks up where Aereo left off

Remember Aereo, the startup that tried to offer over-the-air TV via the internet only to have the Supreme Court shut it down? Well, another company is picking up the OTA dream where Aereo left off.

Mohu, which describes itself as the "cord cutting company," is launching a product called the AirWave at CES 2017. Similar to Aereo, it lets users watch live OTA TV shows on any device, but it goes further: The AirWave integrates live TV channels with over-the-top streaming services into a single app.

That's pretty cool, but it also differs from Aereo in a way that might put it on more solid legal footing: The AirWave is essentially an antenna paired with an app, meaning the user will have have to set it up in their own home (Aereo required users to lease an antenna in a remote location). That means the OTA content will be limited to what's available locally and receivable by the AirWave. Only devices on the same Wi-Fi network as the AirWave will be able to stream the broadcasts. Researchers bid farewell to 'Granny,' the world's oldest known orca

At an estimated age of 105 years old, the orca known to researchers as "Granny" is presumed to be dead.

Labelled J2, she was a member of the Puget Sound orcas which are located in Washington State in  the U.S., a small and closely monitored group of the species.

Over the last 40 years, J2 has been witnessed "thousands of times" according to the Center for Whale Research, but hasn't been seen since October.

She's believed to be the oldest of her species, give or take a 12-year margin of error.

She was last spotted swimming north on Haro Strait, well ahead of J pod — one of the three family groups of whales that travel with their mothers or grandmothers. Read more...

Record high spent on political ads despite Donald Trump

Donald Trump's presidential campaign treated political conventions with about the same reverence as a wrecking ball does a wall. That holds especially true for ad spending.

Yet even the president-elect's unprecedented disregard for TV ads couldn't stop the sector from growing modestly in the past year.

Spending on political advertising as a whole grew by 4.6 percent from 2012 totals to reach a record high of $9.8 billion spent, according to a report released Tuesday by research firm Borrell & Associates.

But the growth didn't benefit everyone in the media industry. Broadcast television turned out to be the big loser of the cycle, its commanding 58-percent market share in 2012 eroding to just 45 percent this year. Read more...

Its new line of QLED TVs, unveiled Tuesday at CES in Las Vegas, use quantum dot material (nano-particle-sized silicon) to create brighter screens – up to 2,000 nits — with what Samsung calls “perfect color,” better contrast and improved viewing angles.

Samsung also claims that the quantum dot technology makes TVs more energy-efficient and durable.

“With the advent of QLED TV, we provide the most true-to-life picture on screen,” said HyunSuk Kim, president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics, in a press release on the new QLED sets. Read more...

A teen just bought a newspaper, because why not

They say millennials don't read newspapers, but one just bought a small-town weekly.

A 19-year-old purchased the Central Delta Argus-Sun, a weekly newspaper serving a small county east of Little Rock, Arkansas, for an undisclosed amount.

The paper, based in Brinkley, is one year older than its new owner, Hayden Taylor, who admittedly has zero experience in the news industry and no college degree. He graduated high school in 2015 before attending a small parochial college for a year.

While he told the local Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that he'll get some textbooks and read about journalism and the newspaper industry, his main focus will be on "how to make the bottom line work." Oh, what a familiar line.  Read more...

Snoop Dogg gives best bud Willie Nelson the perfect Christmas sweater

Redditors share portraits of their dogs posing majestically for the camera

Our canine companions are meant to be our best friends, and yet they are increasingly dominating in an array of disparate, un-dog like fields; killing it as skateboarders, surfers and even distinctly amoral (yet undeniably cute) thieves.

Case in point: A recent trend on the "Aww" subreddit has seen users uploading portraits of their dogs posing for snaps while flaunting the controlled grace of decorated models — putting your average human's selfie to shame.

Check out the following choice highlights of dogs nailing their portraits, and try to keep your jealousy in check. Read more...

Lego Boost is robot building for the rest of us

LAS VEGAS — Vernie considers me with his icy blue yes, an orange eyebrow slightly cocked. Then, suddenly, he races forward and asks me my name. I shout it into the nearby tablet and we commence bonding.

Okay, we don’t so much bond as I command and Vernie, a new Lego robot, responds.

Vernie is one of five models that children ages 7-to-12 can build and program with Lego’s new Boost kit. The new, 543-piece Lego set, introduced this week at CES in Las Vegas, is like the younger brother to the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot-building kit. That set is relatively complex, uses special pieces and requires a lot more patience on the part of kids and parent to work out even the most basic programs. Doing so pays dividends, but if you’ve never coded before, it can be a little off-putting.  Read more...

Millions of cows to be tagged with unique 12-digit numbers in India

After its people, India now wants its cows and buffaloes to have a unique numerical identity.

The government has rolled out an extensive project, wherein 1,00,000 technicians have set out to tag 88 million cattle with a 12-digit unique identification number, the Economic Times reported.

It will work just like the Aadhar system, where citizens are marked with unique numbers and the identification is used in major government transactions.

By tagging cows and buffaloes, the government wants to streamline the tracking of cattle and stay on top of animal vaccination, dairy production and so on.  Read more...

App-connected hairbrush will teach you to brush your hair better

You could be brushing your hair all wrong — at least according to L'Oreal's new smart hairbrush.

Called the Kératase Hair Coach, the brush uses an array of sensors and an app to "coach" users into brushing their hair more efficiently.

The Wi-Fi enabled hairbrush is powered by Withings, and connects to your phone so you can track data it collects. The battery-powered brush is equipped with five sensors: an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a conductivity sensor, load cells and a microphone.

The accelerometer and gyroscope detect motion (which direction you are brushing your hair); the conductivity sensor tracks whether your hair is wet or has product in it; and the load cells detect how forcefully you brush. Of course, none of those things will actually tell you about your hair itself, which is where the microphone comes in. Read more...

Device lulls you to sleep with relaxing scents

LAS VEGAS — Sleep is a precious commodity that every human needs, and a new device promises to help you get it through the power of smell.

Oria, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, is a device that uses two fragrances: one to help you fall asleep and another to help you stay asleep.

The connected device looks sort of like a small humidifier, except instead of releasing vapor, it releases scents that are supposedly designed to help you get a night's rest. Someone made VR shoes and it's as weird as it sounds

When you think of accessories to use in virtual reality, shoes are probably not what comes to mind. But that hasn't stopped one company from creating a set of sensor-enabled kicks fro VR.

Part controller, part accessory, the Taclim shoes (created by Cerevo, the same company behind the app-enabled snowboard bindings) allow you to use your feet to interact with what you see in virtual reality.

Though Cerevo describes them as "VR shoes," the design is really more Birkenstock than shoe. You place your foot in the "shoe" and  two straps go over your foot. As you walk and interact with the objects and surfaces in the virtual world, the shoes vibrate in different patterns in response to your actions. Read more...

A new kind of router turns your Wi-Fi network into a fortress

LAS VEGAS — Smart devices have a problem. Most of their magic requires that they connect to the internet, but the internet can be a dangerous place.

Malware is everywhere, and when it infects connected gadgets, it can be a problem for everybody.

But a new class of device is rising to combat this trend, and it's on full display at CES 2017.

Late last year the term "botnet" became a buzzword thanks to a major cyberattack on Dyn, one of the companies that provides some of the basic infrastructure of the internet. Hackers were able to employ a network of infected smart devices — thermostats, security cameras, routers and who knows what else — from all over the world — to act as one in a DDoS attack, which crippled many well-known services, including Twitter. Artist finds brilliant way to mess with facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology is booming both for commercial and security purposes, from Amazon scanning faces in its grocery store to police using the software on 117 million Americans.

But a Berlin-based artist has found a way to confuse these computer vision algorithms with a concept that borrows from the camouflage techniques used by animals.

With the HyperFace project, Adam Harvey uses thousands of "algorithm-specific optimized false faces which reduce the confidence score of your true face," as he told Mashable via e-mail.

Millennials, there's some good and bad news about your gender pay gap

LONDON — The gender pay gap for UK millennials now stands at 5 percent; halving the gap experienced by the previous generation, new research suggests.

But, while that might sound like good news, the research — shared with Mashable — also shows that this progress is set to be undone as soon as women enter their 30s and 40s, meaning that millennial women will still earn significantly less than men over their careers.

The analysis — conducted by living standards think-tank, the Resolution Foundation — looked at the typical hourly pay of different generations of women from as far back as the greatest generation (people born between 1911 and 1925); tracking it over the course of their careers and comparing it to that of their male counterparts.  Read more...

"'Bones' is ending...after 11 years," Billy Eichner explains sadly to New York pedestrians in this Billy on the Street segment titled "A Farewell to Bones."

How do us regular citizens feel about the end of Bones? Sadder than you'd expect, really. New York is, somewhat surprisingly, brimming with love for David Boreanaz, the relationship between Booth and Bones and also for actual bones. Did the show go off the rails? Who can say, really? (No one Eichner spoke to could.) But there are hard facts at work here, like that the hip bone is connected to the back bone and the back bone is connected to the neck bone. Read more...

This Mannequin Challenge expertly shows the need for a Parkinson's cure

The Mannequin Challenge may be getting stale in terms of meme culture, but one Australia-based nonprofit just made one of the most powerful videos you need to see.

Parkinson's New South Wales, an organization that brings support and resources to people living with Parkinson's disease, made a poignant Mannequin Challenge video featuring several people with hand tremors — a common symptom of the neurological condition.

The video is noteworthy because the rules of the social media fad require its participants to stay completely still for the entire duration. And that's the point: "Until there's a cure, life is our challenge," the final card of the video reads. Read more...

Cat owner learns the hard way to read those Amazon descriptions carefully

Redditor cewallace9 just wanted to order a nice cat tree for her beloved feline friend. Instead, she ordered a tree for dolls. Or ants.

Cewallace9 failed to notice the phrases "dolls houses" and "miniature" in the item's Amazon description and thought she was getting an under-$20 deal on a full-size scratching post.

Image: Amazon

That... was not the case.

Image: Imgur

"Note to self," she wrote, "...check the dimensions of EVERYTHING before ordering online."

All is not lost, though: this little felt lump could make a great ring holder. Or cewallace9 could adopt a few hamsters. Just some suggestions. Read more...

Wendy's Twitter account still has (fresh, never frozen) beef with the world

Hell hath no fury like the Wendy's Twitter account scorned.

The fast food chain recently dropped jaws after Twitter users discovered the 🔥  comebacks it was sending to unsatisfied customers on the platform.

On Wednesday, Wendy's (fresh, never frozen) beef with Twitter users continued, escalating after the account posted what appeared to an infamous Pepe the Frog meme, re-designed to resemble the restaurant's red-haired mascot, Wendy.

After being asked, "Got any memes?," the Wendy's community manager replied with a brand-altered rendition of the internet meme that was adopted by neo-Nazis. It currently serves as an icon of the white nationalist alt-right movement. Read more...

Lakers fan nets $95,000 by nailing amazing half-court shot

Tuesday night was a great one for Lakers fan Jerald Acoba, who watched his team defeat the Memphis Grizzlies and — more impressively — sunk a half-court shot for $95,000.

It was the second time this season a fan has won big bucks by hitting the shot; a fan won $35,000 earlier this season. The opportunity happens at every game, and with each miss the jackpot grows bigger.

After sinking the money-winner, Acoba swaggered around the court in celebration, even receiving congratulations from some of the Lakers's star players.

Asked what he had planned for the money, he went the altruistic route, saying he was going to buy his mom a car.  Read more...

Prolific Pacific storms set to punch California with blockbuster rain, snow

A series of powerful storms are dumping potentially damaging amounts of rain and snow in California. By tapping into subtropical moisture like a needle tapping into a vein, the storm systems are transporting huge amounts of water vapor, which is being converted to low elevation downpours and mountain snow.

While forecast uncertainties remain, it's possible that some areas will receive up to a foot or more of rain before the skies clear early next week. In addition, the higher peaks of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada Mountains stand to get blitzed with up to 10 feet of snow.

LG's new robot helpers are cute and friendly AF

LAS VEGAS — LG just announced a new line of robot helpers that are pretty damn cute.

The Korean company showcased two Hub Robots, an Airport Guide Robot and an airport cleaning robot at CES Wednesday.

Sort of like a robot butler, the Hub Robot can control your Wi-Fi connected appliances, so it can preheat your oven and tell you when your food is done.

Also available in a smaller "Mini" version, the Hub Robot has an interactive display that shows information about what it's doing, like checking the weather or starting your next load of laundry.

This will come in handy for all those wifi connected appliances, LG's hub robot #MashCES pic.twitter.com/XNwNk1Hrrv

Get ready to see more captions on Facebook videos

Facebook is trying to make creating and watching videos even easier. The social network is introducing an automatic captioning feature for videos on Facebook Pages, TechCrunch reported Wednesday.

Facebook said the feature has in fact been rolling out to all U.S. English Facebook Pages since October. Not every Page and not every Page administrator has access, Mashable found when searching for the setting.

The system, available within the Page manager, can generate video captions with the click of the button. It's not perfect, as TechCrunch notes, but administrators can correct any errors in the text. The tool breaks it out line by line, segment by segment, to make it easier to check.  Read more...

Panasonic's GF9 is the perfect mirrorless camera for selfie lovers

The quest for the perfect selfie continues. We can all use our smartphones to take a good selfie, but taking a great selfie requires a little more work after the fact. You need to find the right app and then make the right tweaks before it's post-worthy.

There are plenty of cameras out there that promise to take the best selfies, but few like the new Panasonic GF9.

At $550, the GF9 is reasonably priced for a 16-megapixel mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. It's small enough to fit in a coat pocket or a purse and has a design inspired by old school film cameras.  Read more...

You can experience Obama's last speech live in 360 degrees

Barack Obama's legacy as the social media and tech president will be cemented right through his final moments in office.

His farewell address will be broadcast in live 360 video thanks to a partnership between virtual reality media company VRScout and the White House.

Those who cannot attend the event on Jan. 10 can still feel like a part of the audience at McCormick Place in Chicago through these immersive videos.

"People will have differing opinions [regarding Obama's political legacy], but for future generations, for the first time, they’ll be able to go and sit and stand next to a president as he delivers his farewell. Not only will we be doing it live, but we’ll also have a 4K version of this that will be forever accessible," Eric Chevalier, the cofounder of VRScout, told Mashable. Read more...

Your iPhone could soon make it easier for you to text during mvoies

According to Tweets posted by Australian leaker Sonny Dickson, Apple's Jan. 10 iOS 10.3 beta release might include a "Theater mode" for texting during movies.

The feature reportedly dims the display and mutes audio to make it easier to text in dark, quiet theaters.

The potential introduction of the feature signals that one of the last phone-free strongholds might finally fall to our smartphone addictions.

The world's largest flash drive holds 2 terabytes of data

Have a ton of digital data you need stow away in your pocket? You're in luck — about two full terabytes worth of it, in fact.

Fresh off the CES news line comes word of Kingston Digital's latest offering, a massive (at least storage-wise) USB flash drive, the DataTraveler Ultimate Generation Terabyte (GT). With up to 2 TB of storage, Kingston claims it's the highest capacity USB flash drive in the world.

In the words of my colleague Damon Beres, "that's a big honkin' flash drive."

Back in 2013, Kingston was the first to release a 1 TB flash drive. The new 2 TB version comes outfitted with a zinc-alloy metal casing for "shock resistance" and a USB 3.1 adapter (sorry, MacBook Pro users)Read more...

Amazon reportedly planning to launch its own brand of workout clothes

Amazon is apparently getting into the yoga pants business.

A series of recent job postings suggest that the online shopping giant plans to launch an athletic apparel line to join its existing roster of private-label clothing brands.

The listings, which were posted in late December and first reported by Recode on Wednesday, are seeking applicants “to build authentic activewear private label brands that have compelling and unique DNA and deliver amazing consumer valued innovation.”

That would seem to indicate that Amazon plans to compete against the likes of Under Armour, Nike and Lululemon in the trendy "athleisure" wear market — a category that encompasses workout clothes for everyday wear like yoga pants, tank tops and running tights. Read more...

Dazzling photo of stellar nursery cuts through cosmic dust to reveal baby stars

A giant stellar nursery shows off its newborn stars in a new photo taken by a powerful telescope in the Southern Hemisphere.

The nursery — known formally as the Orion A molecular cloud — is actually the closest known "star factory" to Earth at 1,350 light-years away, according to the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

"The most spectacular object is the glorious Orion Nebula, also called Messier 42 seen towards the left of the image," The ESO said in a statement

That nebula actually creates part of the constellation Orion's sword, if you want to train a pair of binoculars on it yourself sometime.  Read more...

'Hi From the Other Side' app brings together Trump and Clinton voters who want to talk

Once upon a time, they were (Facebook) friends and neighbors. Post-election, however, many Donald Trump supporters and Hillary Clinton voters are looking at each other like they're self-righteous aliens from another planet.

A new app called "Hi from the Other Side" hopes to bridge that divide. Started by 29-year-old Henry Tsai, a student at Harvard Business School, the app brings together Clinton supporters and Trump voters to do the thing they want to do least — talk to each other.

Interested users are paired up with someone who voted for the other candidate. The site encourages users to not just email, but to actually speak to each other, whether over the phone, on video or in person. Read more...

The latest co-working spaces are girls-only

It’s 11 a.m. on a recent Friday, and 29-year-old Audrey Gelman—public-relations powerhouse, former Hillary Clinton press aide, longtime friend of Lena Dunham’s—is sitting on a pink couch at the Wing, the co-working space and social club she co-founded this October in New York. A man walks through the elevator doors, and Gelman throws him a friendly wave. “That’s our AV guy,” she says. “He’s basically the only man that comes through here.”

That’s because the Wing — so-named because, like the wing of a house, it’s a separate space — is just for women. Co-working is hardly new; industry trade magazine Deskmag estimated there would be 10,000 co-working spots worldwide by the end of 2016. But female-focused spaces have become a niche in the industry as a response to contemporary feminism and a reaction against fratty venues that advertise kegs and pingpong. “Women are craving community, connection, and confidence, and that’s what we’re going to give them,” says Stacy Taubman, 38, founder of Rise Collaborative, which is set to open in St. Read more...

Jury trial to decide whether the 'Star Trek' fan film boldly went too far

LOS ANGELES — A trial by jury could decide whether a fan-made Star Trek film — meant to be a proof-of-concept for a higher quality, feature-length version — boldly went too far into the depths of copyright infringement.

Paramount Pictures and CBS, which own all rights to the franchise's film and TV productions, months ago filed a copyright lawsuit against Axanar Works, which sought to raise $1 million on Kickstarter for Prelude to Axanar, a prequel to the original television show. Axanar used professional cast and crew to make its 20-minute version for YouTube, where it's been viewed 2.7 million times. Read more...

Kylie Jenner konfirms the obvious: The Kardashian apps use ghostwriters

Kylie Jenner has quit personally writing posts on her app after "a very personal post" that was too personal she didn't even write was published.

If that doesn't make sense to you, congratulations. Because it shouldn't.

The post in question was about how she spices up her relationship with Tyga, including recommendations for everything from baking cookies to using sex toys. And while she's certainly not shy about exposing certain aspects of her relationship, this false portrayal of their romance struck a nerve.

It's pretty standard stuff for a relationship advice column, save for a couple hyper-specific details ("I heard T say he wanted personalized chopsticks, so that's what I got him for his by-day.") It's written in conversational, albeit slightly grating, tone that Kylie and anyone else raised on a steady diet of mediocre women's magazines could mimic without any writing chops.   Read more...

Man who had his medical debt paid by John Oliver speaks out

In June, comedian and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver purchased $14.9 million dollars worth of medical debt for just $60,000.

It seemed almost too good to be a true — a simple, hilarious sketch designed to produce great ratings. But on reddit Tuesday, user EricHill submitted a letter he claimed he received from the comedy show, explaining that his debt had been resolved.

Not only had the comedian paid the debt, he also alleviated Eric of having to pay any taxes on his "cancellation of debt" income. That's because the series paid for Eric's debt through "RIP Medical Debt," as a 501(c)(3) charity. Eric's debt was paid off, no strings attached. Read more...

CES' biggest event so far was everything people hate about tech

The electric car revolution is missing a barf bag. Too bad. You're about to need one.

On Tuesday night, Faraday Future—an aspirant Tesla competitor very much on the rise—debuted their FF 91 electric car at CES in Vegas. The car looks pretty amazing. But the presentation overflowed with enough meaningless tech jargon to fry your motherboard, or make you roll your eyes right out of your head.

Over the course of the 70-minute showcase (which you can watch below), Faraday referred to its ride as:

  • "The first of a new species.

  • "The world’s first ecosystem-connected car.

  • "[An] intelligent entity [that] is also a caring entity.

  • And: "The car that may not be a car at all.

  • Oh, also, there was the car's "avant-garde proportion and silhouette."  Read more...

Trump officially adds 'Apprentice' villain Omarosa to White House staff

It wasn't too long ago that a Donald Trump presidency appeared, to many, simply not possible.

Now another seemingly impossible, or at least strange, event is also a reality: On Tuesday, 2000s reality TV villain Omarosa Manigault was said to be joining the White House staff of incoming President Trump, according to sources who spoke with the Associated Press. An official announcement on Wednesday tweeted by multiple reporters appeared to confirm the hire.

Manigault's official title will be assistant to the president and director of communications for the office of public liaison, the position currently held by Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. Read more...
