Weather forecaster truly cannot contain her love for Adam Driver

It's hard to predict what will cause a bout of uncontrollable laughter. For Charlotte, North Carolina meteorologist Kaitlin Cody, the magic combination is actor Adam Driver, a Super Bowl commercial and an awkward joke live on-air.

After learning that Driver is scheduled to appear in a live Super Bowl commercial this year, Cody lauded him as "one of the funniest people on Earth, although I guess you have to watch the show Girls to understand." Then, she compared him to her brother, which, understandably, we suppose, weirded out her co-anchors. Cue the cry-laughter.

Let this be a lesson to them: if you want to hear a coherent weather report, do not bring up Adam Driver again. Read more...

The heart-wrenching, relevant story behind a viral Twitter account

You've probably seen the haunting Twitter posts popping up over the past couple days. They're being shared all over, and for good reason.

"My name is Regina Blumenstein." reads one. "The US turned me away at the border in 1939. I was murdered in Auschwitz."

"My name is Arthur Weinstock," reads another. "The US turned me away at the border in 1939. I was murdered in Sobibor."

The tweets go on and on, more than 250 of them. They're the names of Jewish people who were denied refuge in the United States, then later killed in Nazi concentration camps.

The account sharing those stories, called @Stl_Manifest, started as a project to remember Holocaust victims on social media. But it gained added tragic relevancy on Friday when President Donald Trump signed an executive order that effectively amounts to a far-reaching ban on Muslim refugees and other visitors. In the chaotic, heartbreaking wake of Donald Trump's "Muslim ban," Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau is projecting a markedly different message.

On Saturday, Trudeau tweeted in solidarity with refugees, including those unable to enter the United States under the president's executive order. "To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith," he said. "Diversity is our strength."

Well, this Twitter fight between NBA stars sure escalated quickly

Some good-natured trash talk or a general airing of grievances is far from unheard of among pro athletes on social media, but this little beef between two NBA stars got real personal real fast.

Grab your popcorn.

It all starts with some-good natured ribbing during Friday night's game between the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies. The Blazers' official account tweeted out a GIF making fun of Grizzlies forward Chandler Parsons for air-balling a three-pointer.

To be fair, the NBA 3-point line is really, really far away from the basketpic.twitter.com/dHusI9cHcW

Apple, Uber, Netflix, Twitter join corporate rebuke of Trump immigration policy

Following the internal and public statements from the likes of Google, Facebook and Microsoft regarding the Trump administration's new immigration policy, two additional tech heavyweights have now added their voices to the fray.

On Saturday, in an email obtained by Recode, Apple CEO Tim Cook, the head of the world's leading tech company, reportedly took a stance against the new policy.

"Apple would not exist without immigration, let alone thrive and innovate the way we do. I've heard from many of you who are deeply concerned about the executive order issued yesterday restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. I share your concerns. It is not a policy we support," wrote Cook in the email, according to the report.  Read more...

Airport protests against Muslim ban spread across the U.S. via social media

Organising on social media under the hashtag #MuslimBan, Americans gathered at airports across the country Saturday to protest President Donald Trump's travel ban on Muslim immigrants.

Trump signed the executive order Friday, which included a 90-day travel ban for citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen, as well as a 120-day suspension of the U.S. refugee program.  The move threw lives immediately into chaos, cancelling the travel plans of approved refugees and seeing those with valid U.S. visas turned away at transit stops or removed from planes.

Airbnb said it will help those affected by Donald Trump's Muslim travel ban on Saturday, but is yet to share the fine print.

The company's cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky wrote on Facebook that Airbnb will provide free housing to refugees and people not in their home city who are denied the ability to board flights.

"We have 3M homes, so we can definitely find people a place to stay," he wrote, asking people to reach out to him via his personal email.

An Airbnb spokesperson told Mashable more detail would be shared in the coming days. "We will leverage existing tools, like our disaster response tools, among others," he added.  Read more...

Thanks to Trump ties, #DeleteUber campaign grows on social media

Links to President Donald Trump are shaping up to be a liability for Silicon Valley's golden boys. Case in point: Uber.

The hashtag #DeleteUber has been spreading on social media amid protests against Trump's Muslim travel ban. The ride hailing service was accused of "strike breaking" in New York Saturday, while others condemned remarks made by Uber CEO Travis Kalanick indicating he would work with the president.

In a Facebook statement, Kalanick said the "ban will impact many innocent people."

Hundreds travelled to New York's John F. Kennedy airport Saturday to demonstrate against Trump's executive order, which prohibits citizens of seven majority Muslim countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Read more...

Actor Kal Penn raises thousands for Syrian refugees after vile social media comment

What Kal Penn calls turning bigotry into love is a powerful force indeed.

The actor flipped a vile social media comment on its head Saturday, using the message of hate to rally support for Syrian refugees to the tune of $50,000.

Penn shared a screenshot of what appeared to be an Instagram comment in which someone said "you don't belong in this country you fucking joke." He linked to a crowdfunding page entitled, appropriately enough, "Donating to Syrian Refugees in the Name of the Dude Who Said I Don't Belong in America." Read more...

The Terra Nova expedition: An ambitious and ill-fated attempt to reach the South Pole

In 1910, British explorer Robert Falcon Scott embarked on an ambitious expedition to Antarctica, aiming to explore uncharted wastelands, conduct scientific studies and above all else, become the first person to reach the South Pole.

He had competition. Ernest Shackleton had come within 100 miles of the pole the previous year, and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen also had his sights set on reaching it first. Read more...

Lyft pledges $1 million ACLU donation in response to Trump's #MuslimBan

While the #DeleteUber hashtag continues to gather steam on social media, Lyft is taking on Donald Trump's Muslim ban directly — and probably picking up some new customers in the process.

The ride-sharing company — and Uber competitor — addressed the political minefield in an email to customers, bearing the title "Defending Our Values." The joint statement from co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer protests Trump's controversial executive order in strong terms.

"Banning people of a particular faith or creed, race or identity, sexuality or ethnicity from entering the U.S. is antithetical to both Lyft's and the nation's core values," the email reads. "We stand firmly against these actions, and will not be silent on issues that threaten the values of our community." Read more...

Here's Justin Bieber getting savagely checked in the NHL All-Star celebrity game

The NHL All-Star celebrity game puts former pro hockey players on the same ice as actors and musicians — which can apparently lead to moments like this.

Justin Bieber learned the hard way just how physical the NHL can be when Chris Pronger checked him into the boards Saturday.

Associated Press photographer Mark J. Terrill was in position to snap this amazing photo.

Pronger was a 6-foot-6, 220-pound defensemen in the NHL for 18 seasons (he's technically still under a playing contract, but hasn't actually played in a few years). Here's video of the collision, in which it looks like Pronger wasn't nearly as hard on Bieber as he could have been.   Read more...

The @dog_rates Twitter account is protesting Donald Trump's #MuslimBan with adorable photos (naturally) and messages of love.

It started innocently enough on Saturday, during widespread airport protests railing against the Trump White House-enacted immigration ban — which affects an outsized proportion of Muslims. The WeRateDogs account shared a photo of a cute pup protester wearing a sign that read: "I wag 4 refugees."

The internet isn't too happy about Ivanka Trump's fancy dress tweet

Amidst the chaos brought on by President Donald Trump's maybe illegal executive decision to block immigration from several Muslim-majority countries, first daughter Ivanka Trump wants the internet to check out her dress.

On Friday, Trump signed an executive order that instituted a 90-day travel ban for citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations, a 120-day suspension on U.S. entry for all refugees, and more specifically, an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees hoping to escape civil war.

In the wake of this decision, protesters have gathered at airports around the country to voice anger over Trump's decision and to show support for travelers currently detained due to the sudden change in policy.  Read more...

2 big names in video games take on Trump's immigration ban

The Trump administration's immigration ban has prompted a fast response from two of the bigger names in the world of video games: Vlambeer and Playdots.

Starting at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Vlambeer — the Dutch studio behind Ridiculous Fishing, Luftrausers, and Nuclear Throne — pledged to donate all revenue from the subsequent 24 hours to the American Civil Liberties Union. Co-founder Rami Ismail noted that the donations were prompted by the ACLU's "opposition to the #MuslimBan."

Ismail is an outspoken voice in game development, having fought hard in the past for the rights of indie developers. More recently, he's turned his attention toward the increasingly divisive efforts of the Trump administration; this was highlighted in a string of tweets on Saturday. Read more...

People point out irony of Trump screening 'Finding Dory' during immigration ban

Finding Dory was snubbed when the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday.

Now it's back in the news, this time because President Donald Trump is reportedly screening the movie at the White House for staff and family — right in the middle of the furor over what is effectively a ban on Muslim immigrants.

CBS White House correspondent Mark Knoller shared news of Trump's family movie screening, which will be shown in the White House Family Theater on Sunday afternoon. Indeed, in a presidential schedule shared with press, a movie screening is planned for 3 p.m. Read more...
