New changes to official White House website worry social justice activists

Changes made to official U.S. government websites in the dawn of Donald Trump's presidency are already alarming people invested in social justice causes.

Most of the changes activists have pointed out were made to the official White House website, WhiteHouse.gov, outlining Trump's policies on criminal justice and immigration. There are no mentions of LGBTQ rights.

Under the "Top Issues" section of the site is a Standing Up For Our Law Enforcement Community page, which suggests the path to safer communities lies in "more law enforcement, more community engagement and more effective policing." Read more...

Black Lives Matter app lets social media users mark themselves 'unsafe' in America

A new social media tool is making it extremely and soberingly clear how racism threatens the safety of black Americans.

Mark Yourself Unsafe, a web app that Black Lives Matter organizers modeled after Facebook Safety Check, allows black social media users to symbolically mark themselves "unsafe" throughout the entire United States. The tool officially launched on Jan. 17, and it serves to highlight the current threats the black community faces across the nation — from economic inequality to police violence and countless other forms of racial bias

Livestream follows 'GTA' characters around San Andreas

A Twitch stream is following Grand Theft Auto V NPCs around today as they walk around the streets of San Andreas, crying hysterically.

The last time we saw the San Andreas Community Cam — created as an art project by Brent Watanabe — it was following a deer in a slightly modded version of the game. The deer got into all sorts of antics, including getting shot at and chased by the cops, and somehow surviving pretty much everything thrown its way.

The stream makes its return today in time for the inauguration of our 45th president. Watanabe is using the same basic programming as the deer that, in this case, allows the citizens to wander around and make decisions of their own accord. The only difference is the audio recordings (of what surely must be ugly crying) attached to them.  Read more...

Donald Trump won't let go of his supposed Tom Brady bromance

Donald Trump just became the most powerful man in America. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is on the cusp of his seventh Super Bowl appearance and third NFL MVP award. In other words, he's among the most powerful players in football.

The two "winners" intersected at Trump's pre-inauguration festivities on Thursday, when Trump gave a shoutout to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who attended.

Trump wished the Patriots luck ahead of their AFC Championship matchup with the Steelers on Sunday, calling out Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.

"In the audience we have somebody that’s under no pressure whatsoever cause he’s got a great quarterback named Tom Brady, and a great coach named Belichick — Bob Kraft," Trump said. "So good luck, Bob. Your friend Tom just called, he feels good. He called to congratulate us, he feels good. Good luck. You’re going to do great things." Read more...

It's Aaron Rodgers' NFL and everyone else is just playing in it

Perhaps you missed that final pass during Sunday's Packers vs. Cowboys playoff game.

Rodgers rolls left, eludes a deluge of defenders, buys all the time in the world — as he often does — and then hits a streaking Jared Cook running across the field, all with just seconds on the clock. It lets kicker Mason Crosby come out to break a tie as time expires and, thus, propels Green Bay into Sunday's NFC Championship game.

It was the kind of play only a Hall of Fame-bound quarterback could complete. But what makes the toss even more impressive — and demonstrates why Rodgers is in a class of his own right now — is that he made the whole thing up. Read more...

Apple files $1 billion lawsuit against major iPhone partner

Apple just did the unthinkable: The tech giant is suing Qualcomm, which makes the iPhone's baseband processor — basically the smartphone's modem for connecting to mobile networks — to the tune of $1 billion.

First reported by CNBC, the lawsuit is related to another legal action from earlier this week, when the FTC filed an antitrust lawsuit against the chipmaker, alleging Qualcomm was using its patents to strong-arm competitors into paying exorbitant royalties, even for devices that didn't use Qualcomm-made modems.

Apple was specifically cited in that lawsuit, which also alleges Qualcomm pressured Apple in specific ways to guarantee it would use its modem tech exclusively for a five-year period, from 2011 to 2016, essentially shutting out every other manufacturer of baseband processors from the world's most popular smartphone. (With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Apple began producing some iPhones with Intel modems.) Read more...

One of the most popular White House website pages is a petition seeking Trump's tax returns

As President Donald Trump assumes the oval office, an anti-Trump petition is climbing up the popularity charts on whitehouse.gov.

The second-most popular page on the site as of this writing is a petition calling for the release of Trump's tax returns, according to an analytics website that tracks the webpages of U.S. federal government agencies.

As of this writing, again, around 7,500 people were on the petition's page, and the petition was approaching 3,000 signatures. The only page eclipsing the petition is the White House's home page. Read more...

Thousands form human chain across Golden Gate Bridge in powerful message to Trump

A human chain formed across the Golden State Bridge in San Francisco Friday in just one of the many powerful displays of resistance to Donald Trump's inauguration.

While other protests took hold around the world, San Francisco's bridge protest stood out for the incredible image it gave to the rest of the nation.

Thousands of people locked hands and stood in unity for the two-hour event — a demonstration that was organized by a local group Bridge Together Golden Gate, according to ABC 7 News.

Around 2,200 people stood together as parts of the chain, the Marin County Sheriff tweeted, showing their objection to the new U.S. president just as he was officially being sworn into office. Read more...

Here's what everyone was dying to know during Trump's inauguration

While Donald Trump was being sworn in as the country's 45th president on Friday, the American people were busy searching Google with one burning question.

And that very important query was: How old is Trump’s youngest son?

Yes, Barron Trump, Trump's youngest son — who is in fact, 10 years old — has once again stolen the hearts and attention of Americans.

People seem to relate to Barron, who, like basically everyone else, looked extremely tired during his dad's presidential victory speech back in November, and pretty unimpressed with today's drawn out ceremony. Read more...

This 'Overwatch' player basically stole Junkrat's identity

It's not very often that someone using Overwatch's voice chat turns out to be helpful and entertaining.

YouTuber Rinsenpai was one of those lucky few to experience just such a thing, joining a game with a player named Junkrat who was, appropriately, playing Junkrat. Not only that, he sounded exactly like Junkrat. The impression was so good that it wouldn't be surprising if we learned that he was the actual Junkrat voice actor.

While affecting the voice of everyone's favorite Australian anarchist, Junkrat responded to his teammates, made some jokes and even called out plays and locations of enemy players. What a team player. Read more...

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are finally an official couple

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have officially joined a small – but important – group of queer superheroes in on-panel relationships, per The Advocate.

Written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by Tess Fowler, DC Comics Bombshells #79 puts Harley and Ivy front and center, where their relationship is a key plot point in the story. (Harley and Ivy have kissed in previous issues of the 1940s pinup-style Bombshells series.)

These two have been together for a very long time. Their unique friendship in the '90s show Batman: The Animated Series and in the Gotham City Sirens books brought many to believe that there was more between them than met the eye.  Read more...

Apps aren't dead — they're thriving to the tune of $89 billion

In case there were still any doubts, we now have more proof than ever that the app business is as strong as it's ever been — $89 billion strong, to be precise.

That's the finding of a new report from app analytics firm App Annie, which said that usage, downloads and revenue were all up significantly in 2016, compared with the previous year.

That runs counter to reports that came earlier in 2016 that led some onlookers to suggest the app business was on the decline. We now know that's not the case.

Let's start with revenue. Developers worldwide raked in more than $35 billion in 2016 across the App Store and Google Play, App Annie reports. But, when you factor in revenue from advertising and third-party app stores, the total shoots up to more than $89 billion, according to the firm.  Read more...

Someone at the National Park Service is obviously not happy about Trump's inauguration

Today's peaceful inauguration of President Donald J. Trump won't stop disgruntled government employees from passive aggressively using Twitter.

Though today is supposed to represent a calm transition of power, at least one branch of the government decided to flex its social media presence and point out some negative aspects about the incoming administration.

The National Park Service, the government agency that manages all U.S. national parks, or at least the person running its Twitter account, decided not to take Trump's oath of office lying down. Though not directly tweeting anything, after the official swearing in, the account retweeted two tweets that carried a definite partisan bias, pretty unusual for a government agency.  Read more...

For the strategy vets at Creative Assembly, 'Halo Wars 2' is a fresh challenge

The most exciting thing we know about Halo Wars 2 right now? The Creative Assembly is making it.

There are few development teams on the planet with more real-time strategy chops than Creative Assembly. You might know the studio best for its 2014 survival horror game Alien: Isolation, but this is also the team behind the long-running Total War strategy series.

Where Total War features a cast of thousands and an emphasis on historically authentic warfare, Halo Wars 2 pits the ragtag crew of a single battleship against an alien threat. With smaller armies and a "space marines vs. aliens" sci-fi bent, the new game feels about as far from Total War as you can get. Read more...

Who pulled the bigger crowd: Trump or Obama?

President Donald Trump is all about big crowds, especially when they are gathering for him. There is no doubt the new president would have been thrilled on Friday as hundreds of thousands of people poured into the National Mall in Washington D.C. to witness a Trump presidency in real life.

Despite the yuge gathering, many people shared side-by-side photos on social media to show Trump's crowd compared to Obama's first crowd back in 2009. The shots appear to show a much thinner crowd at Trump's inauguration. People are freaking out that Twitter made them follow Trump's account

The people are revolting. Donald Trump took the oath of office Friday and in part with that transition he has taken over the @POTUS account.

Without any doing of your own, Twitter has made it so that if you followed @POTUS under Obama you're automatically following his now archived account at @POTUS44 in addition to the @POTUS account under Trump. Why Londoners are standing in solidarity with the U.S. at the Women's March

Sundance documentary 'Legion of Brothers' reveals the heroism and horror of war

Immediately after the September 11 attacks, the U.S. government initiated a secret war in Afghanistan.

Fewer than a hundred Special Forces soldiers, building a coalition with the rebels of the Northern Alliance, faced off against the Taliban and the terrorist organization al-Qaeda and succeeded in driving them out of power by the end of the year — with minimal coalition casualties and without conventional, large-scale military operations.

Despite this victory, the U.S. and its allies soon became mired in a seemingly never-ending war, the impact of which is still being felt to this day.

Inauguration crowds are looking puny compared to Women's March crowds

Sorry, Trump, but these Women's March crowds are YUGE.

Ladies from around the world got in formation to take part in the Women's March on Washington following Trump's inauguration, and the crowds are downright bigly.

With attendance projections for the D.C. March now at over 500,000, many can't help but compare today's attendance to Friday's underwhelming inauguration numbers.

While hundreds of thousands did show up to watch Trump be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on Friday, visible empty bleachers and photos of Obama's packed 2009 inauguration ceremony, which had an estimated turnout of around 1.8 million, proved Trump's gathering was far from record setting. Watch the Women's March on Washington streamed in 360 degrees on Facebook

The Women's March on Washington is already proving to be a historic event, with the massive number of marchers from around the country far outpacing the attendance of Friday's inauguration event in Washington, D.C.

And while there are still thousands of women (and men) streaming into the nation's capital, there are many who for various reasons weren't able to attend and are offering support from afar.

For those supporters, the next best thing to a local city march may be a series of 360-degree immersive videos being produced by RYOT from the site of the march.  Read more...

That is still true, in part. But Twitter engineers orchestrated settings that violated what they had said to do.  Read more...

Sundance review: 'Tokyo Idols' paints a creepy picture of J-pop super fans

PARK CITY, Utah — There's a scene in Tokyo Idols where Rio Hiiragi, a pop star trying to make it big, bikes to small provinces as a publicity stunt to meet her fans. She's wearing a cute yellow helmet and live streaming her trek. Trailing behind her are a handful of older men. They are her biggest fans.

The documentary premiering at the Sundance Film Festival spotlights the world of young female performers — "idols" — who dress like anime characters and sing and dance for adoring crowds, even though many aren't very good at singing or dancing.

It's more important for idols to be cute and tender to fans than sing well.  Read more...
