The iPhone at 10: It changed everything

When something is as ubiquitous as the iPhone, it can be hard to remember what life was like without it.

Apple’s iPhone, which was introduced 10 years ago today at MacWorld by Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, is more than a device or expert integration of components, software and design. It’s a cultural object with influence that’s still being felt far and wide.

I wasn’t present at the unveiling. At the time, I worked for PCMag.com and, though we covered Apple and its products, we didn’t always attend MacWorld (back then, Macs held just a fraction of the then critical desktop market). We were aware that Apple had smartphone ambitions, but they were entering a market dominated by BlackBerry, Palm, Microsoft and Nokia (for less-smart “feature phones”).  Read more...

Mariah Carey says producers 'foiled' her New Year's Eve performance

Mariah Carey didn't want a lot for Christmas. She didn't even wish for snow. But in hindsight, she probably regrets not adding "better producers" to her humble gift list.

The American singer-songwriter-diva on Sunday blamed Dick Clark Productions for her disastrous New Year's Eve performance in Times Square.

Carey's comments — shared in a video on Twitter — are the first in her "own words" about the on-stage debacle.

Her representative last week similarly blamed producers for the mess-up, a charge that Dick Clark Productions has disputed. Read more...

College team surprisingly good at 'swimming' through snow in Speedos

You got to hand it to these swimmers from Georgia Tech: they're dedicated to swimming no matter what the conditions.

When the school's planned tri-meet in Virginia against Virginia Tech and the University of Kentucky was canceled by heavy snowfall, some Georgia Tech swimmers took matters into their own hands.

iPhone commercial or foreign indie film? Apple gets artsy with new ad.

Apple’s latest commercial looks like something straight out of a foreign indie film.

"Take Mine" is Apple's latest one-minute ad meant to show off the iPhone 7 Plus' portrait mode and new depth-of-field feature. The short film, featuring indie film-style yellow subtitles, starts in an old cafe and proceeds to take us around what appears to be a Greek village to meet  locals who would fit well into a Criterion Collection classic film.

Alas, this may all be smoke and mirrors, as the real Apple hype is around the 10th anniversary version of the iPhone, coming later this year, which is expected to be an ambitious departure from previous models. But if you can't wait for the next phase of the iPhone, this spot is a charming entreaty to get you to snag an iPhone 7 now.  Read more...

Emma Stone uses awards speech to praise kids' party food 'fairy bread'

In Australia, most kids can't go to a party without encountering a snack called fairy bread

It's white bread, topped with margarine and colourful hundreds and thousands (A.K.A. sprinkles.)

The kids Down Under are wild for it. So too is actress Emma Stone, it turns out.

Having only recently been deemed trendy by a U.S. publication (much to the horror of average Australians), Stone spoke of her love of the snack while accepting the award for Best Actress for her role in La La Land during the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International Awards in L.A. How your BFF Emma Stone got ready for the Golden Globes

It's weird that your best friend, Emma Stone, didn't invite you over to have a glass of champagne and listen to Carly Rae Jepsen while she gets ready for her big night.

But it's cool! She probably didn't want you to make you think she's just trying to make everything about Emma Stone all the time. But lucky for us, the social media-shy actress let everyone have a peek at her less-than-glam lip mask routine.

Issa Rae called out Donald Trump on Golden Globes red carpet

It might be Issa Rae's first Golden Globes but she is not leaving without making a statement.

The actress and brilliant mind behind HBO's Insecure took some time on the red carpet to talk about president-elect Donald Trump's controversial Twitter account.

"Every single time I see a tweet from that man...every single time I see some of the staff and administration he's bringing, it gets worse and worse," Rae said. "The scariest part is how normal it's becoming to some people."

"I think we just have to keep calling things out like, 'No you're lying! That's not true! No, that doesn't work that way!,' Rae explained. "As long as we don't continue to let him slide there might be some hope, but it's scary." Read more...

Watch Pharrell try really hard not to face palm at Golden Globes

Pro-tip: Even if you haven't watched all the films this year, maybe make sure you can get their names right. It's the least you can do.

On the 74th Golden Globes red carpet, Jenna Bush Hager made an awkward mistake when speaking to Pharrell Williams, who is nominated for Best Original Score for Hidden Figures...NOT Hidden Fences (which is not a movie, by the way).

"You're nominated for 'Hidden Fences,'" Bush Hager says to Williams, who then managed to calmly avert his eyes and most likely was doing everything in his power to not face palm right then and there.   Read more...

Evan Rachel Wood wants girls to know they don't have to wear dresses

Twitter is not a fan Jimmy Fallon's Chris Rock impression

Jimmy Fallon raised a few eyebrows by including an impersonation of comedian Chris Rock in his Golden Globes opening Sunday evening.

Fallon said that he had consulted other awards show hosts to prepare for the Golden Globes, and then launched into an impression of Rock. Whether or not his impression was accurate, many viewers deemed it inappropriate....and it reminded quite a few people of a certain cringe-y Office episode.

Here's a huge wasp dragging a huntsman spider around a kitchen

Not content with giving us snakes eating each other, or exceptionally giant spiders who eat mice, nature has plenty more frightening animal-on-animal oddities to throw up.

Take for example this orange spider wasp dragging a large, incapacitated huntsman spider in Sydney, Australia.

The La La Land star continued her Oscar frontrunner status at the Golden Globes Sunday night, taking home the statues for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

"Damien wanted to make a modern original musical, that's sort of a crazy notion," Stone said of Damien Chazelle's vision for the film.

Stone got emotional in her acceptance speech, thanking her parents and noting that she moved to Los Angeles this same week 13 years ago. She began her journey there, like so many, as a dreamer. Read more...

Ted Cruz issues China an epic eye roll, saying it can't tell the U.S. what to do

In a move sure to raise eyebrows in China, U.S. senator and former presidential hopeful Ted Cruz met with Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen in Houston on Sunday.

Cruz, who lost in the race to become the Republican presidential candidate to Donald Trump last year, used the occasion to fire a word-bullet China's way.

He said that his team had received a "curious letter" from the Chinese consulate asking him to reject Taiwan's visit.

An HTC Vive VR smartphone? Video hints one may be coming

This year's CES didn't offer too many surprises in the way of virtual reality, but a new video has some wondering if we'll soon see a major new VR product from HTC: a smartphone.

Buried at the end of an HTC promotional video leaked on Twitter this weekend is the image of what appears to a smartphone branded as "HTC Vive."

The HTC Vive is the company's popular VR headset, but the only major VR news the company made last week was the unveiling of new VR sensor pucks.

However, a smartphone with some kind of native VR functionality would not only be a huge development, it would represent a smart move forward as the VR industry continues to focus on the smartphone as the engine of broad user adoption of VR versus the pricier, high-end VR headsets.  Read more...

'Moonlight' saves best for last, wins best drama at Golden Globes

Moonlight took home best motion picture drama Sunday at the Golden Globes, the last honor of the night and a big sigh of relief for its fans — many of them critics — after being shut out of five other categories.

Berry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama follows Chiron — played by  Alex R. Hibbard, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes at different points in the character's lives — as he navigates the drug-plagued streets of Miami.

Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monae also star in the film, which has been lauded for its bold meditation on boyhood, growth and sexuality.

Facebook brings guys with same name together in a bromance for the ages

One day you'll get to experience the pure joy of meeting someone with the exact same name as you.

But in the meantime, there's Sam Mitchell from Tasmania and his namesake from England, who have the most incredible story of how they met, something which was chronicled on reddit recently.

The pair met after the Australian Mitchell sent a message to the English Mitchell on Facebook, seemingly just to say hello.

Ryan Gosling's most delightful faces at the Golden Globes

Ol' Ryan "reliably emotive" Gosling is back at it again.

Between fielding red carpet questions and accepting Golden Globe awards for La La Land, Gosling provided us with plenty of GIF-worthy moments.

It's why we love him.

The "Who, me?"

 The good-natured laugh

The vulnerable artist

 The "Proud of you, girl"

The "Why is everyone shoving me?"

The blank stare (but that doesn't mean he isn't listening, because he's always listening).

Stop using the word 'trolling' when you mean harassment and abuse

The internet has created a unique vocabulary, but we've stretched some of these new words beyond their limits and "trolling" should be the first to go.

For most people, "trolling" still refers to a form of online pranking — a provocation in search of a response. Witness people endlessly tweeting the retailer ASOS over a pair of ridiculously long jeans or the Amazon reviews of the "Make America Great Again" Christmas ornament.

Most of all, the word "trolling" demands that you not take anything seriously on the internet. But we've become rhetorically lazy, and there is plenty to be serious about.  Read more...

India tells phone makers to build sub-$30 smartphones

The Indian market is destined to see a $30 (or cheaper) smartphone soon, with all the forces working on making this happen.

To reach India’s one billion people who still don’t have a smartphone, the government has reached out to phone makers to build smartphones that cost less than Rs 2,000 ($29.3).

The government officials recently met homegrown smartphone manufacturers including Micromax, Intex, Lava, and Karbonn to talk about the further lowering the price tag of smartphones, Economic Times reports.

With smartphones dropping below $30 price bracket, more people in India will be able to afford it, the government believes, hoping that this would boost the penetration of mobile wallet and other epayment solutions in the country, according to the report.  Read more...

India's petrol pumps and banks are now fighting over transaction fee on plastic money

Another day. Yet another about-turn.

In a move that could seriously cripple India's cash-strapped population, nearly 56,000 gas stations (locally known as petrol pumps) have decided to stop accepting plastic currency, after the country's top four banks levied a 1% transaction fee on card payments.

The Times of India reported that refueling stations threatened to ban cards almost immediately, until the government intervened and extended the deadline by another week.

Two of India's top banks, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank, account for some 60 percent of card swipe machines installed at petrol pumps.  Read more...

China moves to stop 'internet addiction' rehab camps from using shock therapy on teens

For the past decade, concerned Chinese parents have been sending their internet-addicted teenagers to "boot camps" that claim to offer a cure.

But teens have claimed that abuse is rampant in the camps; electric shock therapy and drugs are some of the "treatments" administered. People have died in the past in these rehab centres, as well.

The Chinese government has now drafted a new law that aims to protect attendees from such abuse, the South China Morning Post reported.

The cyberprotection law, if it goes into effect, will prevent these centres from abusing or threatening minors attending. Read more...

Christian Slater had the best reaction to Tom Hiddleston's bizarre Golden Globes speech

'This is one device': Watch Steve Jobs introduce the original iPhone

The iPhone is officially old as heck: Steve Jobs introduced the device 10 years ago Monday.

You could argue to what extent the device itself has truly evolved from those earliest moments in 2007. At the end of the day, its design has been refined but not revolutionized, much as its actual functionality still revolves around a grid of downloadable apps. But to reflect on the original announcement event at the Macworld conference in San Francisco is to understand how our culture has shifted as a result of this iconic device.

Consider that Jobs had to introduce the iPhone as "one device" that rolled together an iPod MP3 player, a web browser and a mobile telephone. He had to explain how to open and exit apps using the touchscreen and home button — and how to zoom around on websites that were, of course, not yet optimized for a mobile world.  Read more...

Answer: Being almost recognised. At least judging by the stories below.

How the iPhone revolutionized our love lives

LONDON — It's been 10 whole years since the first iPhone was revealed to the public. On Jan. 7, 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the never-before-seen phone, describing it as "a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device."

He wasn't wrong. Love it or hate it, the iPhone has not only revolutionised the the way we date online. It's also transformed the way we feel about online dating.

Hark back to 2007, and the dating landscape looked very different to how it looks now. Online dating was website-based, with sites like Match.com and eHarmony among the most popular. With the rise of the mobile web in the mid-2000s, mobile dating was in its nascent stages, but daters had to access dating sites via web browsers on internet-enabled phones. At least 16 arrested in connection to Kim Kardashian robbery

Several suspects were detained by authorities in Paris on Monday morning in connection with the robbery of Kim Kardashian West, which took place back in October.

Months after Kardashian West was held at gunpoint and robbed of more than $10 million in jewelry at her hotel while in Paris for fashion week, the Associated Press reports at least 16 people (CNN and other sources report 17) have been arrested and are being held for questioning in relation to the crime.

The ages of the suspects range from 23 to 72 years old, and according to a Paris police official, those arrested have a history of prior robberies and other criminal offenses. Read more...

Russian embassy tweets an alt-right meme to troll the British government

The Russian Embassy in the UK is really stepping up its online trolling game.

After using a meme of a duckling with the word "Lame" in response to U.S. President Barack Obama's sanctions against Russia, the embassy's verified UK Twitter account had a go at pundits who criticised a possible Russia-U.S. thaw in relations.

In doing so, the embassy used the infamous Pepe the Frog cartoon, which in September was added to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)'s database of hate symbols:

In today’s papers: pundits call on @Theresa_May to disrupt possible Russia-US thaw. No trust in Britain's best friend and ally? pic.twitter.com/4TNf9x8PCh

Razer's prototypes were so awesome someone stole them from CES

Nobody can accuse gaming company Razer of not bringing its A-game to CES last week.

Though only concepts, Razer stunned attendees with Project Valerie, a concept gaming laptop with three 4K displays and Project Ariana, a concept projector that extends your screen onto your walls. Both earned spots in Mashable's Best of CES 2017

The devices were so impressive that someone has reportedly stolen two prototypes from the company.

In a post published to his Facebook page on Sunday (the last official day of CES), Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, said that he was "informed two of our prototypes were stolen from our booth."  Read more...

Men, a dirty face is the latest grooming trend

LONDON — 2016 saw some pretty unusual men's grooming trends. There was anti-grooming, which involved fake sweat and dishevelled bed hair. Then, there was Jon Snow-inspired hair perms and even the English rose look.

But, 2017 is set to be even more unusual. Models at London Fashion Week's TOPMAN show were sporting a decidedly odd aesthetic: fake dirt

According to a statement emailed to Mashable, this runway grooming look is inspired by the British "pubbing and clubbing scene" of the 1990s.

TOPMAN says the look consists of dirty and greasy hair and oily skin, designed to give one the look of having worked all day and clubbed all night.  Read more...

Billy Eichner and Meghan McCain go to war on Twitter over Meryl Streep's Golden Globes speech

Leave it to Meryl to start a conversation.

During her acceptance speech of the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony, legendary actress Meryl Streep used her time to criticize President-elect Donald Trump for mocking New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski for his disability at a 2015 rally.

"This instinct to humiliate when it's modeled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everybody's life because it gives permission for others to do the same," the actress said, "Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence."

Apple might be launching three new iPads this year

The iPad mini might be going the way of the Dodo.

According to a note from usually-quite-accurate analyst Ming-Chi Quo from KGI Securities, Apple will be launching three iPads in 2017: a 12.9-inch one, a 9.7-inch one and another model that will have a 10-10.5-inch screen.

The largest of the three will simply be a new version of Apple's iPad Pro, while the 9.7-inch model will be a "low-priced option," Quo claims, according to 9to5Mac

The 10-to-10.5-inch model will be the most interesting of the three: A "high-end" model with a narrow bezel design, meaning it might actually have a smaller footprint than the 9.7-inch one.  Read more...

This beer is perfectly optimized for glorious shower drinking

LONDON — There are few things in life that sound more appealing than a cold, refreshing beer while you're standing in a warm shower.

One microbrewery in Sweden has decided to "optimise" the showering-with-beer experience by customising a beer for this exact situation.

"As a brewer I work long and hard days, and when I come home I'm often covered in malt dust — my girlfriend actually calls me Mr Malty Pants — and the shower is a gateway back to normal society," Fredrik Tunedal — founder of PangPang brewery — told Mashable

"I made to Shower Beer small enough to keep its temperature during the shower, and strong enough to mentally wash your workday off and get ready for a fresh night out," Tunedal continued. Read more...

Facebook is (finally) preparing to make money off its massive video audience

Facebook is about to turn up the volume on its video competition with YouTube.

Videos on the social network can soon include mid-roll advertisements, allowing publishers to finally start making money from their videos, Recode reported Monday.

Unlike YouTube where ads run prior to the video and can be skippable after 5 seconds, ads within Facebook videos can be inserted 20 seconds into any video that lasts at least 90 seconds.

The move to ad breaks comes as little surprise to publishers. This mid-roll ad system is the same format Facebook has tested with live videos. "We've found that this model is working well, and we plan to expand this test to make it available to more partners," a Facebook spokesperson wrote in an email to MashableRead more...

Why Google Waymo's self-driving platform is a big deal

Less than a month after officially entering the automotive space as an independent company and announcing its first vehicle, Waymo (the driverless-car company spun off by Alphabet/Google) took the stage at the 2017 NAIS Detroit auto show to show off its new self-driving platform. And what it had to say could make a profound difference for car companies that feel left out of the self-driving game.

The biggest takeaway from the presentation is the company is now making its own hardware for the platform. By taking this step, Waymo can control the development of its hardware hand-in-hand with its software, putting its future in its own hands.  Read more...

Twitter made the best out of the embarrassing 'Hidden Fences' mistake

Here's a PSA we shouldn't have needed: Hidden Figures and Fences are two separate movies. After the nonexistent "Hidden Fences" came up twice during Sunday's Golden Globes, Twitter used it as the jumping off point for a series of glorious portmanteaus.

Hollywood, you have one job. Well, you have several — but at a bare minimum, in the Maslovian hierarchy of Things You Should Get Right, please, for the love of Meryl, learn some names.

The egregious mixup recalled last year's mistaken identification of Gina Rodriguez as America Ferrera, or the party where Mindy Kaling was mistaken for Malala Yousafzai. The Globes even misspelled John Legend's last name, which is also an actual word. Read more...

Twitter tries to list the things Trump finds overrated. You know, besides Meryl Streep.

Meryl Streep winning an award is finally controversial.

The actress' speech as she accepted the Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award was the most talked-about of the evening, largely due to her acceptance speech.

She used her time on the stage to celebrate diversity and champion the free press from being destroyed or silenced. You know, the sort of stuff Donald Trump struggles with. She also brought up  the infamous incident in which the president elect mocked a reporter with a physical disability.

Another year, another day of no one wearing trousers on London's tube

LONDON — It's that time of year again.

Everyone knows that trousers (or pants, if you're America) are a cumbersome, abrasive burden, so it's only right that one day a year we get to dispense with them altogether for our daily commute.

No Trousers Tube Ride Day is a glorious tradition started in New York back in 2002, which quickly spread to other countries when people realised just how much fun not wearing trousers on public transport can be.

Here are some highlights from the London's 2017 'No Trousers Tube Ride':

A good few people seemed to get involved.

James Corden won't be host of 'Carpool Karaoke' spin-off, but tons of other celebrities will be

James Corden won't be the only host at the wheel of CBS and Apple's Carpool Karaoke spin-off.

The series, which will be Apple Music's first official show, will feature 16 different hosts (one per episode) paired with musical guests.

The guests announced at CBS' Television Critics Association presentation Monday include John Legend and Alicia Keys; Billy Eichner and Metallica; Ariana Grande and Seth MacFarlane; Blake Shelton and Chelsea Handler and Will Smith and Corden.

Overall, the show is "fundamentally different" than Corden's late night segments, executive producer Ben Winston said. The biggest distinction is that the spinoff will function as more of an "interview series," and each episode will be 30 minutes in length. Read more...

Volkswagen's new Microbus is even more 'hippie' than the original

Have you always wished you could ride in an iconic 1960s Volkswagen Microbus? Well, soon you'll be able to, and what’s more, it’s electric and drives itself.

Volkswagen introduced the ID Buzz concept car at this year’s Detroit Auto Show on Monday. The concept vehicle from the German automaker is a nod to the beloved Volkswagen Microbus, Volkswagen’s second car, which it introduced in 1950. The original Microbus was popularized during the Hippie movement in the 1960s.

The ID Buzz, which Volkswagen calls a “Microbus for a new era” is both a glimpse of Volkswagen’s future plans and a tribute to one of its most iconic vehicles. It may also help people forget about the diesel scandal from a year ago as the company executes on a larger overall strategic shift from diesel towards electric vehicles.

According to Volkswagen, the ID Buzz has an all electric driving range of up to 270 miles on one charge. It seats up to eight, but can also be adjusted to have two lounging seats and features a fully autonomous “ID Pilot” driving mode, wherein the driver’s seat can even be turned 180 degrees to face the rear.  Read more...

Facebook’s hiring process hinders its effort to create a diverse workforce

Facebook has put itself at the forefront of efforts to recruit a more diverse workforce, including a targeted internal recruiting strategy in 2015 designed to bring in female, black and Latino software engineers.

Yet within Facebook’s engineering department, the push has been hampered by a multi-layered hiring process that gives a small committee of high-ranking engineers veto power over promising candidates, frustrating recruiters and hindering progress on diversity goals.

Facebook started incentivizing recruiters in 2015 to find engineering candidates who weren't already well represented at the company – women, black and Latino workers. But during the final stage for engineering hires, the decision-makers were risk-averse, often declining the minority candidates. The engineering leaders making the ultimate choices, almost all white or Asian men, often assessed candidates on traditional metrics like where they attended college, whether they had worked at a top tech firm, or whether current Facebook employees could vouch for them, according to former recruiters, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about their work.
