16 things Quentin Tarantino learned from rewatching 'Reservoir Dogs' at Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah — Few debuts in the history of cinema have made as much impact as Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs did when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992.

A smart, slick caper film, QT’s rat-a-tat dialogue and style birthed numerous imitators and ushered in the latest generation of filmmaker who, like their musical contemporaries, were deft at mashing up references and tropes to construct something new and fresh.

To celebrate the quarter century since its release, Sundance did a one-off screening of the film introduced by Tarantino, followed by a lively conversation where he was joined by producer Lawrence Bender and Mr. Orange himself, Michael Madsen.  Read more...

Shyamalan's 'Split' is still #1 at the box office

M. Night Shyamalan is back. For the second weekend in a row, the director's Split is the box office winner.

Not since 1999's The Sixth Sense has a Shyamalan movie opened with two consecutive #1 weekends. But Split pulled it off, seemingly cementing the filmmaker's re-emergence after more than a decade of critical duds.

Split picked up an estimated $26.3 million domestically over the weekend, based on Sunday estimates. That's down 34 percent after a $40 million opening weekend (domestic); a relatively small drop by Hollywood standards, and one that suggests both growing interest and repeat viewings for the new film. Celebrities are pouring money into the ACLU after Trump's immigration ban

The ACLU successfully argued for a halt to deportations across the United States on Saturday after an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on Friday caused chaos for immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations.

Even before the stay was granted by a federal judge in Brooklyn, celebrities began calling for donations to the ACLU, starting with Sia, who said she will match donations up to $100,000.

The immigration ban, which resulted in  detentions of immigrants at airports around the United States and protests at many of those same airports, also targeted legal U.S. residents from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia who were out of the U.S. at the time of the ban, as well as those who have dual citizenship in one of those nations. Meteorologists to the world: "Don't call me weather girl"

Female meteorologists have a simple request: Stop labeling us educated, highly trained scientists as "weather girls." And maybe stop commenting on our dresses and lipstick and start asking about our forecasts.

"Women on television can also be scientists. It's that simple," said Ginger Zee, a meteorologist on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight.

On Sunday, The Weather Channel (TWC) debuted a two-part series exploring the unique challenges that women face in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Watch John Legend destroy Trump's Muslim ban in awards speech

Musician and Chrissy Teigen devotee (who isn't?), John Legend really came for Donald Trump’s recent immigration restrictions while presenting at the Producer's Guild of America Awards (PGAs) in Los Angeles on Saturday.

"Los Angeles is the home of so many immigrants, so many creative people, so many dreamers, and those of us who work in this business have the privilege of shaping how the rest of the world perceives this country we love," Legend is heard saying in a YouTube video of his presenter's speech.

"We are the voice, we are the face of America. Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions. Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that."  Read more...

Barb from 'Stranger Things' is back and killing it on the SAGs red carpet

Our hearts broke when Stranger Things failed to do justice to Barb, our favorite nerdy side character.

But never fear: Your girl Barb — aka actress Shannon Purser — is back and looking great on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet.

It seems the UK really, really doesn't want Trump to meet the Queen

This is what it's like when British people tell you, politely but firmly, to bugger off.

A petition demanding the UK government prevent U.S. President Donald Trump from making a state visit because it would be an "embarrassment" for him to meet Queen Elizabeth II has been signed 861,658 times.

"Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales," the petition reads.

Trump was invited to come for a state visit after he met with Prime Minister Theresa May in Washington D.C. on Friday, but his far-reaching Muslim travel ban has caused outrage on the other side of the Atlantic. Read more...

Watch the 'Stranger Things' kids lose their everloving minds after winning a SAG Award

Stranger Things won its first major prize of awards season at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, and no one was happier than the young cast members Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp — who pretty much lost their minds as soon as the show's name was announced, making for the most adorable moment of the night.

Netflix's zeitgeisty series scooped the prize for Outstanding Performance for an Ensemble in a Drama Series, beating the likes of Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Crown and Downton Abbey.

The kids' reactions were epic enough, but then star David Harbour got on stage and delivered a barnstorming speech with such intensity that was worthy of an award all on its own, following the Meryl Streep playbook and criticizing President Trump's recent executive actions without ever mentioning the POTUS by name. This space agency is planning to launch 104 satellites in one go

India is looking at the sky once again as it preps for another world record next month.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will attempt to launch 104 satellites on a single rocket in February.

ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle will carry three satellites from India, and another 101 smaller nano satellites from five countries including the USA.

If things go as planned, ISRO would be able to surpass, by a long margin, the record set by Russia, which sent 37 satellites in one go in 2014.

ISRO's attempt, however, is more about making satellite launches cheaper than shattering records. "Target of PSLV-C37 to launch the maximum number of satellites, tentatively on Feb. 15 is not for creating a record or publicity, it is aimed at cutting the costs down," Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre director K Sivan told The Times of India. Petition to stop Trump's state visit to the UK passes 1 million signatures

A petition calling for the UK government to block Donald Trump from making a state visit to the country has gathered more than 1 million signatures in less than 48 hours.

Miss Universe contestant proves that no one can resist the music of Beyoncé

It's always a good time to bust a move, even on national television.

During a commercial break at one of the Miss Universe Pageant rehearsals, all eyes were on one contestant in particular: Zoey Ivory aka Miss Netherlands. The beauty queen hopeful was spotted dancing to Beyoncé's hit song "Single Ladies" while the rest of her co-candidates were still standing in their picture-perfect poses.

Ivory had no problem showing off her spot on dance moves which isn't that surprising. But seriously, who wouldn't dance to Beyoncé. Read more...

This company will turn your white AirPods black for $99

Most AirPod owners can agree on a few things: They look dorky, sound great and the W1 chip helps them pair seamlessly with iPhones and iPads.

The $159 price could be lower, too, but the one thing most people seem to want is a black option. Enter BlackPods, a third-party company that will darken your glossy white AirPods for a fee.

BlackPods says it uses a three-phase "proprietary coating system" to produce a scratch-resistant pair of black-colored AirPods.

The company also says each pair is "hand-finished" and "subjected to a rigorous visual and quality inspection" by its Brooklyn-based team; the entire coating process takes three days. Read more...

All the best protest signs from the weekend of Muslim ban demonstrations

More protests erupted this weekend in response to President Trump's executive order, signed on Friday, which indefinitely barred Syrian refugees and temporarily banned travel into the U.S. from citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries.

And, yet again, protesters brought some great signs.

While the Women's March took place in streets and parks, the Muslim ban protests extended to major airports across the U.S. as stories have surfaced of people already being detained due to the ban.

Unsurprisingly, the protests of this past weekend were coupled with tons of creative signage. The messages ranged from humorous to angered, and many were rooted in the theme that immigrants and people of all races should be welcomed in America. There were also signs protesting Trump directly and calling for his impeachment. Read more...

It's now harder to check if a used iPhone is a stolen iPhone

'Looks like scoring a used iPhone just got a bit more tricky.

Apple's iCloud Activation Lock tool—which allowed potential buyers to check if a used iOS device (i.e. iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and Apple Watches) is tied to an active account—appears to have been removed from iCloud.com. The change was first noticed by MacRumors.

Activation Lock, first introduced with iOS 7 in 2013, is enabled automatically when a user turns on their device's Find My iPhone feature. It ties an iOS device to a single iCloud account, effectively protecting the phone from being hijacked by someone else. It's the reason why you have to take a few moments to wipe an iOS device and turn off Find My iPhone when you trade your old iPhone in for a new one—if you didn't, your old device would still be tied to your account, and useless on the resale market.   Read more...

What we know today as developer and publisher Bandai Namco began as a Japanese company that made children's rides for department stores, called Nakamura Manufacturing, founded by Nakamura in 1955. The Namco name is an acronym that was eventually derived from the 1958 reorganization as Nakamura Amusement Machine Manufacturing Company. The new dating app that aims to include people with disabilities

Honesty about your true self isn’t exactly the hallmark of most online dating apps, but a new one called Glimmer is trying to create a more transparent environment, especially for people with disabilities.

The emphasis dating apps like Tinder and Bumble put on superficial snap judgments can pose a unique challenge for people with disabilities. Profile formats can make it difficult to easily disclose your disability, and many people fear they’ll be passed over if they do. Glimmer is trying to provide an alternative by creating a more inclusive, transparent environment.

These barbed wire dreamcatchers help support the resistance at Standing Rock

One Native American tribe is giving a modern spin to the traditional dreamcatcher, using razor-sharp wire to highlight the struggle and resilience of Indigenous communities fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The Pueblo Tribe, which set up camp at Standing Rock in August 2016, started making dreamcatchers with barbed wire that was previously used against water protectors. Now they're selling the jarring creations to help fund the camp's needs.

The tribe took this particular barbed wire off canoes taken from the Pueblo Camp by Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) security. The canoes, used by the Pueblo Camp for water rescues during clashes with DAPL workers, were reportedly stolen during the night by security and brought to their base across the river. Read more...

Nope, we are not referring to the infamous and played-out #Deflategate. We're actually talking about the opposite — over-inflating footballs.

The Slow Mo Guys have come out with a new video that shows us what over-inflating a football looks like in slow motion. Trump’s ‘Muslim Ban’ could have doomed Apple

If you subscribe to the butterfly effect—the idea that a tiny change in one part of the world can have massive side effects elsewhere—then you know that a President Trump in 1949 (as opposed to President Truman) and an executive order banning immigration from Syria, could have meant that one of the most successful companies of all time, Apple, might never have existed at all.

Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, who was adopted shortly after his birth in 1955, was born to Abdul Fattah Jandali, and Joanne Carol Schieble. The two met while students at the University of Wisconsin.

Jandali, however, was born in Syria in 1931, and emigrated from Beirut in 1949. He was, in other words, a Syrian National.  Read more...

A thorough explanation of why you might feel sick playing games in VR

It's not clear just how widespread an issue motion sickness in VR is, but it's certainly not not a problem.

Some game developers have managed to come up with tricks to lessen the impact of VR gaming on your stomach, but at best they can feel like temporary fixes to a problem that always seems to rear its head after a few minutes of reprieve. Fraction turning, limited fields of view and even the addition of fixed points that players can focus on for some relief only do so much.

Youtube user Super Bunnyhop does a good job of explaining why that is after digging through tons of research and talks on VR sickness. Basically? Though factors like speed, acceleration, frame rate or a shaky horizon certainly exacerbate the problem, it mostly comes down to your confused perception of reality. Your brain can't reconcile the differences in the varying sensory information it's receiving, potentially thinks you're hallucinating because you've been poisoned and it wants to force you to get the toxins out of your system. Oh, brain. You're so silly. Read more...

Meet the gay Iraqi soldiers who fell in love and ended up on Ellen

Ellen has once again found a story so impossibly sweet it almost makes us forget all the garbage she had to sift through to get it.

In the midst of Trump's recent Muslim ban, Ellen presented us with Nayyef and Btoo, two former Iraqi soldiers who met while enlisted and fell in love. Iraq's rampant homophobia forced them to keep their relationship a secret—if anyone were to find out they were gay, they would "either get tortured or killed."

After his work as an English translator put him in danger, Nayyef applied for asylum in America. Btoo was unable to receive the same asylum, and the pair was separated for four years. During their time apart, the two spoke through Skype every single day. Read more...
