Fixing Roadhog's hook in 'Overwatch' is a great start, but it's not enough

This is one of those good news/bad news situations: Bad news for Roadhog fans, good news for all other Overwatch players.

Roadhog's signature move — a grappling hook attack that pulls a single foe out of position and into his Scrap Gun's line of fire — is a little bit overpowered. Has been for some time. And now, at long last, Blizzard is going to fix it.

It's hard to discuss what the changes will be without first looking at what's so very wrong with Roadhog. That hook works just a little too well, cutting through the air and ignoring the basic physical laws of the universe as it travels. Read more...

A devout Brazilian grandmother mistakenly prays to a 'Lord of the Rings' toy every day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the extended edition Blu-ray version of Return of the King.

A viral Facebook post by a woman in Brazil tells the story of her discovery that her daughter's great-grandmother, attempting to pray to a Saint Anthony figurine, has instead been praying to a small toy Elrond, the elf lord from Lord of the Rings.

"My daughter’s great-grandmother prays to this figure of Saint Anthony every day," writes Gabriela Brandão. In a series of images she reveals that the figurine is not Saint Anthony, but in fact the Lord of Rivendell. Read more...

Headphones are finally getting less dumb about music

LAS VEGAS — The iPhone 7 has turbocharged the move to wireless headphones, but even without cords, we're still tethered to our phones in a very real way.

Think about what you need to do to change up your music. Regardless of your cable situation, you need to pull out your phone, tap on your music app, navigate to another playlist or song, hit play, then put the phone back in your pocket. Why can't you just speak what you want to play — your headphones have a mic, after all, but Siri isn't much good beyond skipping tracks and doing some basic stuff with Apple Music.

Get used to it: Trump's tweets are the news

In just two days, Donald Trump took us all from @EmergencyKittens to North Korea's nuclear program

Such is the news in 2017: The personal Twitter account that helped Trump control the election's narrative now drives the entire American news cycle. Meanwhile, Trump hasn't held a press conference since June (there's one now scheduled for January 11), effectively gutting any power journalists once had to push the president-elect on his statements.

This is the new reality newsrooms are learning to operate under. It's challenging basic assumptions, like: "We should call out the president-elect when he tweets something factually inaccurate." Read more...

Fancy teen wears suit to meet newborn niece because 'first impressions matter'

Grant Kessler is going to do great at job interviews.

The 18-year-old Ohioan recently met his new niece, Carter, who was born earlier this week in Columbus. And according to his sister, Grant really wanted to make a great first impression because he showed up to the hospital in a suit.

Do we think he's going to land that "fanciest uncle" position?

Uber: Don't trust the government with your data, but trust us

Uber sent its New York City users a scary email on Wednesday.

"The government wants to know where you're headed ... on every ride," the subject line read.

The message prompted Uber users to email New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission with their objections to new rules that require ride services to share destination information with the city. Or as Uber called it, "sensitive personal passenger data."

"Today, the City requires Uber and other companies to hand over a lot of sensitive personal passenger data, including where you're picked up on every trip. Now the City wants more. They're trying to force companies to tell them where you’re dropped off, as well," Uber wrote to users. "In other words, they want to piece together the full details of every trip you ever take. Netflix has quite the nostalgic New Year's resolution for 2017.

The lovable streaming service has decided to throw things back to its humble beginnings by showing its loyal DVD subscribers some love.

The company has created a new app — DVD Netflix — for the millions of old timers who still utilize the antiquated DVD-by-mail service, which was launched before the discovery of streaming in 1998. Remember 1998? It brought us hits like Windows 98, the original iMac and the A-Teens.

In 1998, you really would have loved an app that allowed you to queue up your DVDs to watch. In 2017, that dream is a reality thanks to Netflix.  Read more...

"The best way I can describe it is having a diaper on and never changing it, and just sitting in that diaper the whole year," Marshall said on Showtime's Inside the NFL. "That's how our year was. It was a bad year."

Tesla is one step closer to producing its Model 3

LAS VEGAS — Tesla's enormous battery factory is now open for business. The company's Gigafactory, located in the Nevada desert outside of Reno, began producing its first batteries, Tesla announced.

The batteries produced there will help power Tesla's upcoming Model 3 and its energy storage products.

Tesla is producing the batteries in conjunction with Panasonic, which has made a large investment in the project. Panasonic will use cells produced at the factory in its products as well.

The factory's opening is good news for Tesla fans awaiting the company's upcoming Model 3, which has faced production delays. Beginning production of the cells that will power the Model 3 is a significant step toward making the car a reality — though it's unlikely the factory's opening will impact the expected 2018 ship dateRead more...

Digital media is brutal, and Medium's Ev Williams just showed why

There's a growing number of people who believe that digital media's ad-supported model is broken. Add the co-founder/CEO of Medium, Ev Williams, to the top of that list, now.

Williams, who's also the co-founder of Twitter, announced on Wednesday that Medium has laid off 50 people—about a third of its total staff—as the company looks to change how it makes money.

As part of the announcement, Williams put forth a dark view of internet publishing:

"It’s clear that the broken system is ad-driven media on the internet," Williams wrote in a Medium post announcing the layoffs

"It simply doesn’t serve people. In fact, it’s not designed to. The vast majority of articles, videos, and other “content” we all consume on a daily basis is paid for — directly or indirectly — by corporations who are funding it in order to advance their goals. And it is measured, amplified, and rewarded based on its ability to do that. Period. As a result, we get…well, what we get. And it’s getting worse." Read more...

Prominent climate-denying politician gets schooled by science, again

For more than a year, Rep. Lamar Smith, the chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, has been hounding federal climate scientists about a landmark scientific study, published in 2015, whose results he didn't like.

Now comes proof from an independent group of scientists that affirms NOAA's findings.

The study, published in the journal Science, addressed a so-called pause in global warming that scientists had observed from 1998 to 2012. Up until that study, the "warming hiatus" had been a prominent talking point for those arguing that manmade global warming either didn't exist at all, or is less of a problem than most climate scientists make it out to be. Google launches Tilt Brush 'artist in residency' VR art initiative

The landscape of cutting-edge art, usually limited to traditional multimedia, audio and visual hacks, is undergoing a major shift with the advent of virtual reality art tools like Oculus Medium and Quill

Now, one of the earliest players in the space, Google's VR paint-meets-sculpting app Tilt Brush, has launched what it calls an "artist in residency" program to push VR art even further into the mainstream of creative expression.

We saw the first hints of such a program last year in France, where Google trained a small group of artists in the ways of VR art. The new program is much bigger and boasts over 60 artists, including New Yorker cartoonist Bob Mankoff, The Little Mermaid animator Glen Keane, Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty, and Susan Kare, well known as the graphic designer behind the interface icons and fonts for Apple's Mac computers back in the '80s.  Read more...

New York Times gets smacked down in China — with a little help from Apple

Apple has cut the cord to any China-based New York Times iPhone readers.

The Times reported on Wednesday that Apple removed both the English and Chinese-language versions of the newspaper's apps from the iTunes  store on Dec. 23. Other news publications are still available for download.

Apple told the NYT that Chinese authorities had flagged the app as a "violation of local regulations."

The puzzling part about the take-down is the lack of communication between the NYT and the Chinese government. Authorities reportedly worked only with Apple, leaving the paper in the dark about the removal.

When Mashable reached out to Apple for more information about the app removal Apple spokesman Fred Sainz responded with the same statement given to the NYT.  Read more...

Ridiculous underwater drone will help you fish and film it in 4k

LAS VEGAS — Is it actually fishing if you can see underwater?

Drones are out in droves at CES this year, and as we start to accept them in our everyday lives we're seeing new and interesting ways for people to use them, even while fishing.

Although plenty of people have taken their aerial drones to the sky to help spot sea creatures, PowerVision created a submersible robot called the PowerRay that can help you catch fish.

The PowerRay will dive to a depth of 98 feet and an optional add-on Fishfinder sonar system can help you track fish 131 feet deeper, giving you a potentially unfair advantage over the poor little fishes. The Fishfinder can also be detached and used as a standalone device.  Read more...

And boy, does it sound remarkably (and hilariously) like a heartbroken break-up message.

From the outside, the two Chromebooks are virtually indistinguishable. I had a hard time telling the two apart. The only real distinction between the two is what's inside; an ARM processor inside of the Plus and a 2.2GHz Intel Core M3 processor in the Pro.

Otherwise, storage and RAM are the same: 32GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM per machine. Pretty standard specs for a Chromebook. Battery life on both is up to 8 hours. Read more...

HTC unveils Vive accessory that turns real objects into VR controllers

LAS VEGAS — At CES 2017, HTC announced two new accessories that expand on the Vive VR headset's capabilities.

The first is a small attachment called the Vive Tracker that enables motion tracking for real, physical objects and imports them into the VR world.

For example, clip the Tracker to the end of a physical baseball bat and your real swings will translate into the VR world.

Or connect the Tracker to a pair of VR gloves and — boom — your hands and fingers are replicated in VR with full finger-tracking.

Or attach the Tracker to a blaster and pull on its trigger — it'll fire like a real gun in VR.  Read more...

Tennis legend Roger Federer playing a pair of 'air bongos' is pure dorky joy

When you're a legend of the game, like tennis player Roger Federer, you can do anything you want without feeling like a dork.

Even on the very public and potentially embarrassing "Bongo Cam" at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia.

It's your standard fan cam, but with a pair of superimposed graphic bongos that the crowd can pretend to play with. Federer is of course more than happy to play along, as Gloria Estefan's "Conga" blasts in the background.

It's one of those moments that's ordinarily kinda lame, but because he's a 17-time Grand Slam winner — it's actually the best thing ever.  Read more...

Grayson Allen, Duke's dirtiest player, back after 'indefinite suspension' of one whole game

Well, that was certainly quick. Duke basketball's "indefinite suspension" of star guard Grayson Allen for repeatedly and purposely tripping opponents lasted for ... wait for it now ... drum-roll please ... one whole game.

In possibly related news, the Blue Devils struggled mightily without Allen during the single game for which he ended up being benched.

Another interesting reference point: Entering a Wednesday night matchup with Georgia Tech, Duke faced the very real prospect of starting the rugged Atlantic Coast Conferences season 0-2 without Allen. The Blue Devils lost to Virginia Tech by 14 points on Saturday.  Read more...

The 30-year-old product designer based out of New York City wrote about his experiment on his blog just after Christmas before media outlets picked up on his reflections. In an email conversation with Mashable Wednesday, he said the long journey started with just a three-month challenge.

Russell Westbrook absolutely drills referee in the head with a basketball

On the same day the NBA rescinded two of his league-leading 11 technical fouls, Russell Westbrook picked up another one — this time for nailing a referee in the head with a basketball.

Facing the Hornets on Wednesday night, Westbrook let the ball fly in the first quarter.

It looks pretty accidental, considering Westbrook's reaction, which means this foul might be rescinded as well.

But the timing is funny.

After refs handed Westbrook two technical fouls on Friday and then ejected him for arguing, the point guard claimed he isn't officiated the same as other players.  Read more...

What the hell is chicken salt? How one condiment became a national obsession

While Canadians load their chips with poutine, Belgians have them with mayo and Germans happily dip theirs in curry ketchup, Australians prefer to douse their fried potatoes with a fluorescent yellow (sometimes orange) salt substance.  Read more...

1 simple New Year’s resolution for more retirement savings

Let’s just be clear upfront: New Year’s resolutions almost never work.

Their failure rate is so high, I’m half embarrassed to suggest one. I’ve yet to ever keep one myself; the success of this year’s attempt to avoid injuries by stretching after exercise can best be summed up by my midyear herniated disc.

One of the many reasons resolutions don’t work is that we get this intense urge to be a better person in early January, then a few weeks later we turn back into the person we really are. For me, that’s apparently someone too lazy to spend three minutes stretching.

But the resolution I’m going to propose doesn’t take yearlong willpower. It doesn’t even require that you save more, something that Americans surveyed by NerdWallet said they flat-out won’t do next year. It’s a one-time decision that you can implement during those few short weeks when you’re the best version of yourself: Switch to saving for retirement in a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k). Read more...

'Real Housewives of ISIS' causes online controversy

A BBC comedy skit mocking the British women who left the country to join ISIS in Syria has caused mixed reactions online.

The "Real Housewives of ISIS" features four brides of jihadi fighters showing off suicide bomb vests and taking selfies.

In one scene, a woman says: "It's only three days until the beheading, and I've got no idea what I'm gonna wear."  Another shows two women arguing because they're wearing the same suicide vest.

The comedy segment, which went viral on Facebook with more than 14 million views, is part of the  BBC Two show Revolting written by Bafta-winning directors Heydon Prowse and Joylon Rubinstein. It has caused heated reactions on social media: Read more...

The best tech of CES 2017

There's only one place to see the future of technology before it arrives: CES.

Every year, the world's tech companies converge in Las Vegas in to give everyone a glimpse of all the new tech gizmos and trends to come.

CES is glorious tech hype if you're into impossibly thin high-resolution TVs that are crazy expensive, levitating speakers (because why not?) and new PCs.

Hot off the heels of a year that saw devices hit peak maturity, we expected to see more of the same old (smart assistants, self-driving cars, VR and AR headsets, drones, etc.), but newer, better and faster. And we did.

With more tech products shown off than previous years, it's practically impossible to navigate through the barrage of announcements without a proper guide. Life's too short to waste on terrible technology.  Read more...

We now know when Twitter will shut down Vine

All good things must come to an end. And now we know exactly when Twitter will take its Vine app to a nice farm where it can run around free and play with other defunct apps.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday afternoon, the app confirmed it will cease to exist as we know it on Jan. 17, completing its regeneration to "Vine Camera."

Update - the Vine app will become the Vine Camera on Jan 17. Please download your Vines before then! More here: https://t.co/zrE1oDTx48

— Vine (@vine) January 4, 2017

The tweet includes a link to a handy-dandy FAQ that walks you through the process of how to download your Vines (before January 17) and prep yourself for the new Vine Camera app, which sounds an awful lot like Vine except it's on Twitter instead.  Read more...

This sweet projector extends games off the screen and onto your walls

A few years ago Microsoft showed off a concept at CES called IllumiRoom that used Kinect to extend gaming beyond the TV screen and onto your walls. It could have been a game-changer if Microsoft had released it.

Razer's Project Ariana is the spiritual successor to IllumiRoom and works virtually the same, using projections to extend content experiences outside of the computer screen and into the physical world.

From a hardware standpoint, Project Ariana, which is also a concept device (although one that actually works), resembles your typical portable home projector. Read more...

This ridiculous laptop is the portable Batman command center you've always dreamed of

There's only one thing I can always consistently look forward to at CES: Razer's crazy concept devices. This year's no different.

At CES 2017, the gaming brand announced Project Valerie, the world's first laptop with three built-in 4K displays that automatically deploy and retract into a "compact" 12-pound notebook design.

It's absolutely nuts.

Why the hell would anyone want such a monstrosity? Its 1.5-inch thick aluminum design and hefty weight alone defeats all portability. For Razer, that's the wrong question. The right question is, why the hell not? Read more...

Could 2017 be the year people take universal basic income seriously?

What if people were paid just for being alive?

It may sound like some radical utopian ideal, but that's the essential proposal at the heart of a growing movement now drawing mainstream support from a diverse array of economists, policy wonks and Silicon Valley thinkers: Universal basic income.

The idea is appealingly simple: In such a system, a government would guarantee each of its citizens a yearly stipend of enough money to cover a basic standard of living, no strings attached.

The concept, in its most elemental form, has been bouncing around circles of academics, activists and policy theorists for decades with little to show for it in the way of real-world practice.  Read more...

People are understandably freaked out by this toy horse's genitalia

This upsetting development was brought to the internet's attention by Bob Velcoro on Wednesday when he posted photos of the toy to Twitter.

Google CEO: India is a 'quick-test market' for company's products

Google CEO Sundar Pichai feels that India adopts "remarkably" fast to new products and services. And it is the country's "thirst and hunger" for connectivity that is the driving force.

"We realize when we build for India, we can actually take it globally," Pichai told a local television station during his ongoing visit.

Google has developed many services in India — YouTube Offline, for instance — and then taken them worldwide.

Pichai says the video service was "made to work offline in India, and is now working well in other places."  He added that Google is working on YouTube Go, a service that would function smoothly on slower internet networks.  Read more...

J.K. Rowling released a teaser for her new book, and it's as cryptic as ever

J.K. Rowling loves a good mystery, whether she's writing it into a novel or simply tantalizing her fans on Twitter.

The Harry Potter author, who regularly changes her Twitter header, switched it Thursday morning to a cryptic painting: Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanities of Human Life.

"Don't you like it?" Rowling responded coyly when a fan asked her what prompted the new image. She went on to give precious little more information...

It's hard to find a header that sums up everything I'm working on at the moment, but this painting comes close! It's by Harmen Steenwyck.

Facebook reminded me to watch 'Bones' — a show I haven't liked in seven years

Facebook has a sharing problem. A year ago data revealed that Facebook users were posting "fewer things about their personal lives for their friends to see," The Information reported.

While those Facebook "likes" are leading to strong ad targeting and videos are raking in views, once-active users are turning to share their own memories on rival apps like Snapchat.  Read more...

Mass Effect: Andromeda looks pretty even when you're looking at armed combat with laser-spewing death robots.

Can you spot the massive error in this Washington Post cover?

The Women's March on Washington is poised to become the largest anti-inauguration protest, which is why it's especially important to get the facts straight.

Earlier this morning, however, The Washington Post Express, the newspaper's free daily, made the Women's March its cover story, and appeared to have forgot a critical detail. They switched the symbols for male and female, seeming to suggest that the largest protest of women on Capitol Hill would actually just be a gathering of men.

James Baldwin's words rise up in 'I Am Not Your Negro' trailer

When James Baldwin died in 1987, he had written 30 pages of his next book. 40 years later, director Raoul Peck picks up the thread in Amazon Studios' and Magnolia Pictures' I Am Not Your Negro.

Framed with Baldwin's interviews and readings by Samuel L. Jackson, I Am Not Your Negro explores the systemic oppression of Black people in America, starting with the very language used to describe them.

The film is an extension of Baldwin's unfinished Remember This House, which would have explored the assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. "By confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for," Magnolia and Amazon said in a press release. Don't you dare leak anything if you work at Facebook, or this happens

Mark Zuckerberg has a simple way of dealing with Facebook employees who leak information to the press.

He finds them. And then fires them.

That's the most compelling piece of a story published on Thursday by Recode that details just why Facebook doesn't have more leaks despite Zuckerberg's weekly Q&A sessions that are broadcast to the company's staff of more than 15,000 employees.

Like many tech companies, Facebook has a weekly session in which employees can ask questions. Zuckerberg, however, tends to go above and beyond many employers, in providing employees with information on new projects, as well as his own personal thoughts on a topic or two. Those thoughts rarely if ever end up in the media—no small feat, considering Facebook's size, and how closely it's watched.  Read more...

6 ways to combat the gender pay gap in the workplace

LONDON — Millennial women, you might be encouraged by news this week that the gender pay gap in the UK is lower than ever before for your age group. But that narrowing of the gap is short lived. It deteriorates as women reach age 30.

New research published on Wednesday suggests that the gap for women in their twenties is as small as 5 percent; half what it was for women of the previous generation. The research suggests that once women enter their 30s, the pay gap rises dramatically to 9 percent — just one percent less than it was for Generation X women (born between 1966 and 1980).

Leaked photos might give a first look at the Galaxy S8

A new leaked photo uploaded to Chinese social network Weibo claims to be a picture of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8. If the device in the image is legit, it's the world's first look at Samsung's first flagship effort since the Galaxy Note 7 saga — but, while there's a small chance it might be real, that's probably not the case.

The image, first brought to our attention by SamMobile, appears to confirm a few of the design rumors we've heard thus far. Most noticeably, the bottom bezel of the phone's front ditches a physical home button (likely in favor of virtual controls embedded into the display), clearing out space for a nearly all-screen front design. Welcome to the humanization of self-driving cars

Can you love a self-driving car if it loves you back?

It's a question that nagged at me as I considered the prevailing automotive trends at CES 2017: autonomy and artificial intelligence. These two cold and slightly abstract ideas sound worlds away from humanity. Cars that drive themselves are robots, and artificial intelligence is the opposite of your soft brain matter.

Which led me to a third, somewhat hidden, yet critically important car trend: Making all this technology seem less scary and more human.

The humanization of AI and autonomy can seem like a slightly desperate attempt to win over an unwilling public since people believe, irrationally, that self-driving cars are less safe than human drivers and that artificial intelligence will someday result in the singularity that kills us all. Turns out that iconic 'Seinfeld' theme song was completely improvised

Everyone who watches TV knows the catchy synth-bass sounds of Seinfeld's theme song.

Turns out composer Jonathan Wolff, the man responsible for writing the riff, improvised the sounds using his mouth, hands and a simple bass line that could be rearranged according to the timing of Jerry's ever-changing monologues.

Although the network didn't quite get the theme, Larry David insisted on having it and...voilà! The Seinfeld theme was born.

This video of the theme's history was shared on Youtube by user Great Big Story, which features Wolff explaining his method.

Totally improvised, totally iconic.  Read more...

What the new American Girl doll means to black and stuttering communities

When 4-year-old Hazel Alexander was introduced to Gabriela McBride, she knew they would have an instant bond.

Talking to her mom about her new "friend" — who happens to be American Girl's Girl of the Year for 2017 — Hazel couldn't contain her excitement.

"Mom, I know how to stutter," Hazel said. "I can totally talk 'her.'"

Talking "her" meant a distinct language she and the newest American Girl doll share. Both girls stutter, a speech characteristic marked by repetition in sound, prolonged pauses and repeated words. It's a way of speaking that still comes with significant stigma — and stuttering advocates say Mattel-owned American Girl is helping to tackle that shame with Gabriela's release. Read more...

After 2016 of pushing hard on self-driving cars, Uber started 2017 building for human drivers

In the next decade, there could be no more Uber drivers. They won't be necessary in a world where every Uber car is self-driving.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick (known by his more than 7,000 office employees as TK) said that the shift from human drivers to automation will take quite awhile. But it appears that some employees think that Uber hasn't done enough to show support prior to the transition.

"Get someone to 'handle' TK. Too many glib comments in the media about driverless cars does little to convince drivers that we value and appreciate them," a senior researcher in Uber's San Francisco headquarters wrote in a Glassdoor review last September. Read more...

Dell's new 27-inch all-in-one is great for music lovers

LAS VEGAS — With Apple's current unwillingness to upgrade pretty much any of its desktop products, the PC competitors are looking more and more interesting.

Dell's latest all-in-one, the Dell XPS 27, is an obvious iMac competitor, and while its specs aren't all better than the iMac's, it does bring a few very interesting features to the table.

The obvious one is sound. The XPS 27 comes with six built-in speakers — two tweeters and four mid-range/bass units — and can be configured to work with two additional passive radiators and two down-firing speakers (sold separately) for an ever richer sound. Dell worked with Grammy-winning producer Jack Joseph Puig on the audio for the XPS 27, and promises the "best sound" ever seen on an all-in-one PC.  Read more...

Threatened bluefin tuna fetches $632,000 at Tokyo auction

A $600,000 price tag may seem mighty high for just one giant bluefin tuna.

But if every torpedo-shaped tuna cost that much, perhaps the species wouldn't be teetering on the edge of extinction.

A Japanese sushi chain boss paid just such a price on Thursday at Tokyo's 80-year-old Tsukiji fish market.

Kiyoshi Kimura, who owns Kiyomura Corp., bid a winning 74.2 million yen ($632,000) for a bluefin tuna that, at 212 kilograms (466 pounds), weighed as much as two or three people.

Kiyoshi Kimura, right, cuts a 212-kilogram bluefin tuna at his main sushi restaurant in Tokyo on Jan. 5, 2017.

Tinder trolls CES by pitching a regular reality headset

Tinder would perhaps have a difficult time getting in on the VR craze. So it didn't. Instead, it pranked CES.

In the thick of the Consumer Entertainment Show on Thursday, the dating app "launched" Tinder VR, a "multiuser VR" experience that is actually just two people wearing a big headset and having a face-to-face conversation.

"As a tech company, we felt inspired to create [a VR headset] of our own," reads a blog post on the Tinder website. "But here’s the thing: our mission has always been to get people together to have real experiences in the real world. So how do we reconcile the fact that VR is the antithesis of this?" Read more...

New hands-free breast pump lets moms pump on the go

LAS VEGAS — A new breast pump startup wants to help new moms take a literal hands-off approach to pumping.

Willow is a set of two breast pump wearables that are meant to be worn inside a woman's bra. An app on the wearer's smartphone tracks volume of breast milk and time spent pumping and logs that date for later use.

Women don't need the app to pump, however— the product works entirely on its own to encourage the let-down reflex and then adjusts pumping based on the wearer's flow. When the bag is full, the pump stops automatically. One charge gets wearers at least five pumping sessions, and in a pinch, can do a single session on 20 minutes of charging. Read more...
