Sunny Obama rides last week out with a bang, bites visitor on face

While the rest of the Obama family takes a graceful approach to its final days in the White House, Sunny Obama is doing the opposite by biting a visitor on the face.

As TMZ reports, Sunny, an otherwise adorable female Portuguese water dog, bit an 18-year-old White House guest's face on Monday when the visitor tried to pet the dog.

TMZ says Ronny Jackson, the physician to the president, attended to the visitor's small injury, and determined that she would need stitches. Though she will be fine, the cut may leave a scar.

A face scar with an amazing back story? We'd take it.  Read more...

Google's biggest Android problem is also ruining emoji

Want to use that new selfie emoji? How about the facepalm or avocado? If you're on Android, or texting someone who is, there's a good chance those new characters aren't working.

That's because Google, like Apple, ties emoji updates to its new software releases: update to the latest version of Android, get the newest emoji. It sounds straightforward enough, but there's one glaring problem that's been a major handicap for Google for years.

Unlike Apple, which controls both its hardware and its software, Google relies on dozens of manufacturing partners to create the bulk of its handsets (Google's Nexus and Pixel devices excepted). Those partners also control when their customers get new software and, unfortunately for Google, have a pretty piss-poor record of getting these updates out in a timely manner. Read more...

Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon weigh in on how Hollywood fails women as they age

Bette Davis' and Joan Crawford's careers predate Jessica Lange's and Susan Sarandon's.

But Lange and Sarandon, who play the Hollywood legends in Ryan Murphy's upcoming FX series Feud: Bette and Joan, say not much has changed for women in Hollywood in the last few decades.

"I don’t think it’s changed that much really to tell you the truth," Lange, 67, told reporters at FX's Television Critics Association presentation Thursday. "It’s not necessarily a question of age or looks. I think it is who is interested in these stories. If the powers that be don’t find there is anything valuable or interesting in a story about a woman of a certain age, those films aren’t going to get made."  Read more...

Las Vegas rolls out the first self-driving shuttle service in the U.S.

Even with the bright lights of CES fading away in the rearview mirror, the city of Las Vegas is still showcasing exciting tech breakthroughs this month.

This week Vegas, in partnership with NAVYA and Keolisrolled, rolled out the first trial of an all-electric, self-driving public transportation service in the country, immediately fulfilling the promise of some of the autonomous tech shown off on the convention showroom floor by putting it to work out on the streets.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, the shuttle service will run down the city's Fremont Street alongside normal traffic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m daily until the trial period ends on Jan. 20. The route is part of a planned "Innovation District" in downtown Vegas, which the city hopes will become a center of focus for more groundbreaking projects in the future.  Read more...

People are absolutely roasting the Chargers' new logo

After 56 seasons in San Diego, the Chargers are moving to Los Angeles, and people really aren't all that stoked about it.

But aside from the protesting fans — including the guy who relentlessly egged the Chargers stadium — we have the new LA Chargers logo, which people are emphatically ripping to shreds.

Here's the logo, which might be only temporary as the franchise considers a bigger rebrand down the line.

Mexico's solution to Trump's tweets? Buy Twitter and shut it down

There’s a strange idea circulating among Mexican currency traders. Well, more of a joke really. But there’s a certain logic to it.

It goes like this: Instead of spending its precious reserves to defend the peso, Mexico should just buy Twitter Inc. — at a cost of about $12 billion — and immediately shut it down. The notion made the rounds this week after the central bank revealed it had already blown through $2 billion of reserves in a largely futile effort to shield the peso from a steady stream of anti-Mexico Tweets from Donald Trump.

Doctors discover why stressed out people have more heart attacks

Emotional stress has long been considered a major risk factor for heart disease. But doctors have struggled to determine exactly how all that tension and mental strain can harm your heart.

A new study suggests that the brain's fear and stress region — the amygdala — might be the connecting piece.

In a new study, researchers found that heightened activity in the amygdala is associated with a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. The new research was published this week in The Lancet.

While larger studies and additional research are needed to confirm the findings, the researchers said their study could eventually lead to new ways for treating stress-related heart risk.  Read more...

Barber gives man a very, very hot haircut

We've heard of candles being used to remedy split ends before, but have never seen this crazy cut.

In this video posted on Youtube by user Earthling, a barber seems to be putting some kind of flammable powder on a customer's hair and setting it completely on fire with a lighter. He then uses two combs to style, while pieces of burnt hair fall to the floor.

And the customer is just chillin' with his hair on fire. Not panicking. Not screaming. Not finding the nearest sink.

Apparently, this technique is used to prevent fallout and keeps hair looking full and healthy. But scissors, though sharp, still give great, less horrifying haircuts if you're not into all the flames.  Read more...

I spent 2 weeks socializing in VR, and I saw the future

When Mark Zuckerberg donned an Oculus Rift on stage at the Oculus Connect conference last fall to show off a group of avatars playing cards in virtual reality, it was meant to be a peek at the future of social networking. But it turns out that future is already here: Even without Facebook's direct participation, social VR is quickly becoming a thing.

Facebook's own Oculus Rooms social VR app (previewed last year) has yet to come to the Rift headset, but a wide array of social VR apps have already taken off, fostering vibrant communities of people coming together from around the world to interact as simple yet surprisingly effective avatars, facilitated by high-end VR headsets like the Rift and HTC Vive. FDA: Hackers could take control of connected cardiac devices

It's a sad truth, but if something can be connected to the internet, hackers will more than likely take a run at it. It doesn't matter if it's a children's toy or an essential medical device — if there's a vulnerability, chances are it can and will be exploited.

That was all too clear this week when the FDA issued a warning about the vulnerabilities of a series of connected implantable cardiac devices used by patients to relay their vitals to caregivers from home. The devices give affected patients and their doctors an invaluable level of connection outside the hospital — but even though there's no evidence of any attempts to break through the system, experts found the connection can be compromised. Cutting Planned Parenthood funding is a great way to punish poor women

With the imminent inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump, Congressional Republicans now have exactly what they need to make good on a long-held obsession: "defunding" Planned Parenthood.

Don’t freak out, that Nutella cancer study is far from confirmed

Nutella can give you lots of things — like happiness or high blood sugar — but cancer isn't one of them, according to the company that makes the hazelnut spread.

Italian confectionery giant Ferrero is pushing back against a European study that suggests chemicals from palm oil — an ingredient in Nutella and thousands of other packaged foods — might pose a cancer risk to humans.

So far, no food safety authority has said people shouldn't eat foods containing palm oil, Nutella or otherwise.

But European regulators are now considering putting limits on the amount of palm oil-related chemicals that food products can contain. Such measures might require Ferrero and other manufacturers to spend millions of dollars on substitute ingredients, Reuters reported. Read more...

Actual footage shows what it's like to land on an alien moon

In 2005, an alien probe flew through the hazy and cold atmosphere of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, and landed on the world's surface.

That spacecraft — named the Huygens probe — was sent from Earth by the European Space Agency along with the Cassini spacecraft to help humanity learn more about Saturn and its 53 known moons.

Thanks to a new video released by NASA, you can relive the Huygens' descent to Titan's surface 12 years after it actually landed.

The video shows actual footage from the spacecraft's point of view as it passed through the hazy layers of Titan's atmosphere, spotted "drainage canals" that suggest rivers of liquid methane run on the moon and gently set down on the surface, NASA said.  Read more...

The generic EpiPen is already causing some insurance companies to drop the real one

The introduction of a generic version of the life-saving — and expensive — EpiPen was heralded as a long overdue fix. But the move is now causing some insurance companies to change how they approach coverage of the allergy tool.

The insurer Cigna on Thursday said the company would no longer cover the full-price EpiPen, which costs as much as $600. Those prices sparked outrage last summer when customers with high-deductible healthcare plans were caught off guard by the high prices for a once-reasonable healthcare need. But beneath the derisive laughter is the despair of thousands upon thousands of San Diego Chargers fans who just got told that they — and their treasured memories and shared traditions — mean nothing in face of dollars and cents.

The Chargers officially announced a move to Los Angeles Thursday after 56 years as San Diego's NFL team. Owner Dean Spanos decided to move the team after the San Diego voters reasonably declined to give the Chargers millions in public funds to build a new stadium. That public money, voters commendably decided, should fund social programs and infrastructure rather than a professional sports team that exists to turn a profit. Read more...

New species of gibbon named after Star Wars character, and Twitter can't cope

The Force is strong with this adorable newly-discovered gibbon species.

Thanks to some Star Wars-loving scientists, the new species in southwest China has been named in honor of our favorite hero from a galaxy far far away, Luke Skywalker.

Following the announcement, the Skywalker hoolock gibbon — aka "Simian Skywalker," "Jungle Jedi" and of course, the scientific name, Hoolock tianxing — was warmly and appropriately welcomed by proud actor Mark Hamill, who portrayed Skywalker in the classic films.

So proud of this! First the Pez dispenser, then the Underoos & U.S. postage stamp... now this! #GorillaMyDreams #SimianSkywalker #JungleJedi https://t.co/JKCe5kZFmJ

Jeff Bezos is living the billionaire dream and buying a museum to turn into his house

From Graceland to the home of Mark Twain, old storied mansions are often transformed into museums. But when you're a billionaire tech exec, life can work the other way round.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently paid $23 million in cash for a 27,000-square foot property in Washington D.C. that just happens to be the city's former Textile Museum, according to a report from The Washington Post.

He plans to turn the massive property — which includes two 4-story houses — into a single-family home. It's a nearly century-old assemblage of multiple buildings encompassing 10 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms across a 3/4-acre swatch of land that boasts rolling gardens of vibrant greenery. Read more...

Robert De Niro commends Meryl Streep's 'beautiful' Trump speech

Meryl Streep's condemnation of president-elect Donald Trump during her Golden Globes speech on Sunday still continues to have a powerful effect, despite never even mentioning his name.

In the speech, Streep made her profound heartbreak known about Trump's mocking of a disabled reporter at a rally during his campaign last year. The speech might have divided opinions, but there's also plenty of people who have sung her praises.

One such person is actor Robert De Niro, who in a letter, told the actress he shared her sentiments about "punks and bullies" and respected her for speaking up while the world was celebrating her achievements. Read more...

This city is fighting sexual harassment on the subway with a 24/7 hotline

If you are female and have ever ridden a train or bus, sexually inappropriate gestures, words and even contact are things you might be all too familiar with.

Now the Los Angeles public transit system will be the first in the world to address this problem by offering its riders a 24/7 hotline for sexual harassment, according to a statement from the LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority

When riders call 1-844-Off-Limits (633-5464), they can talk through the incident with a counselor from the organization Peace Over Violence and receive the resources and information necessary to report it to the police. The group has counseled victims of sexual abuse in LA County and has hosted its own 24/7 hotline for survivors of rape and battery for over 45 years. Read more...

George Michael gets the 'rainbow priest' memorial mural he deserves

George Michael was a saint. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Although the press hounded him for his supposed controversies, the man was a shining beacon of hope, light and leather.

So it's fitting then that the late, great singer and gay icon has been honoured with a memorial mural in Sydney, Australia, casting him as pseudo a religious icon.

The portrait, painted by acclaimed local graffiti artist Scott Marsh, shows Michael as a "Patron Saint of Parks at Night" — a tongue-in-cheek tribute to his healthy sexual appetite and proclivity to "go outside." Read more...

Google has removed the term 'fake news' from its advertiser rules

Google no longer uses the term "fake news" in its advertising policy.

The company has quietly erased the only explicit mention of the phrase from the rules for its AdSense platform. This comes just months after it announced that it would no longer serve ads to sites that traffic in misinformation.

The language was removed from a section of the "prohibited content" guide in which the company gives examples of potential rule violations. A now-deleted sentence had described "deceptively presenting fake news articles as real" as one possible scenario.     Read more...

The BBC sets up a taskforce to fight back against fake news

The uphill battle against fake news (and correctly using the term "fake news" in the first place) continues. The latest effort to debunk made-up information is British broadcaster BBC.

On Thursday, The Guardian reported the BBC was forming a debunking team to tackle false stories that often start on Facebook and other social media outlets.

This means segments such as the outlet's Reality Check will become more than an occasional feature, but a persistent effort with a team tackling incorrect stories, posts and information.

People are hating on India's national airline for wanting to reserve seats for women

In what is possibly a world's first, India's national carrier Air India will now be reserving seats for women.

Six seats in the front rows of domestic flights will be blocked without any additional cost, The Hindu reported.

For a while now, buses, trains and even auto-rickshaws in India have had special seats for women, but this is the first time that an airline is implementing it.

An Air India official has reportedly said, "We feel, as national carriers, it is our responsibility to enhance comfort level to female passengers."

The policy will take effect on Jan. 18. Read more...

Comedian's rant about car thieves is a pure joy to behold

Stealing is wrong, kids!

Just ask Australian "Dubsmash King," Ian Zaro, who awoke to find a stolen car had been dumped outside his house.

Rather than just ignore it, the Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander comedian decided to draw attention to the crime the best way he knew how — by making a Facebook video.

The resulting viral response has Zaro feeling a little bit overwhelmed. "I honestly couldn't believe it," he told Mashable via Messenger. "I was just having fun with it, aye. I enjoy making people smile and laugh."

Hey, Siri: How'd you and every other digital assistant get its name?

Siri. Alexa. Google. Cortana. The digital assistants created by the largest tech companies in the world have become such a big part of our everyday lives, you may have never considered why we call them the names we do.

But the stories behind these names are more complex than you might think.

In almost every case, other names were considered and, often, preferred. Cortana was almost called Alyx, Steve Jobs didn't like the name Siri, and if Jeff Bezos had had his way, you'd be calling your Echo "Amazon" instead. The reason why names like Siri, Cortana and Alexa prevailed often had more to do with chance and circumstance than a particular engineering or marketing decision.  Read more...

Yes, the new Rams coach is old enough to drink

On a day when LA's newest football team — the Chargers — stole most NFL headlines, the Los Angeles Rams made a big announcement of their own.

The team hired 30-year-old Sean McVay as their new head coach, the youngest in NFL history.

McVay, who turns 31 in a couple weeks, barely surpasses Alabama head coach Lane Kiffin as the youngest NFL head coach to date. Kiffin was 31 when the Raiders hired him in 2007.

McVay spent seven seasons on Washington's coaching staff, most recently as offensive coordinator. Given his age and boyish charm, Twitter had some pretty great jokes to accompany the Rams' new hire.  Read more...

Adorable koala drinking from a hose on a super hot day is summer goals

How much can a koala bear? Not too much when it comes to the intense heat of an Australian summer, it seems.

One particularly overheated koala has been filmed battling the weather by drinking straight from a hose, its little hand adorably wrapped around it.

The video was first uploaded by Courtney Jade Harvey from Woodside, South Australia, who noticed the koala descending from a tree on her property.

After she offered it some hose, the koala immediately "grabbed [it], held onto it and drank from the end," Harvey said on Facebook.

Poor little bubba. Animal welfare organisation, Animals Australia, then reposted the video, stressing the importance of leaving out water for wildlife during summer. "By leaving water out on your property and by keeping your eyes out for distressed animals, you can not only help alleviate their suffering, but you can help them survive," they wrote on Facebook. Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers are more powerful than they look

The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers—which at first glance look like tiny additions meant to support the tablet-like portable/home console it can slide into—is actually packed with tech.

In addition to a joystick, shoulder buttons and the standard four action buttons, the controllers also feature a capture button. Just like the PS4's share button, you'll be able to capture screenshots and, eventually, video.

The 'Rick and Morty' intro gets a neat 8-bit video game makeover

As Rick and Morty fans are left, still wondering when Season 3 of the animated series will be released, the folks at Adult Swim are hoping to placate them with tidbits of internet content.

One of the most impressive so far is this "8-bit" version of the show's intro, animated by Paul Robertson of Super Dino Boys

Sure, there's a bit of artistic license in defining the animation as 8-bit, thanks to the complexity of these graphics (compared to what you'd see on an NES) but we'd play the hell out of this if it turned into a game.

But after Season 3 is released, thanks.

This driverless car will hit South Korea roads this year

While it's been available for use on campus via an app, the team is ready to test the outside terrain, thanks to Korea recently opening downtown roads to self-driving cars.

Trump didn't drain the swamp, he created these swamp monsters

When he was running for President, Donald Trump promised to drain the swamp. As his inauguration approaches, it appears that Trump's plan was less about "draining the swamp" and more about clogging it with swamp monsters.

The list is long and dark, and includes a Dancing with the Stars reject who is now poised to be in charge of America's nuclear arsenal. The man responsible for helping to guide our economy was the one who sparked the mortgage crisis in the first place. These aren't do-gooder public servants but muddy corporate swamp monsters whose total net worth is $14 billion — the richest cabinet in presidential history. Read more...

How Jadeveon Clowney went from draft bust to forceful freak of nature

You don't have to look hard to relive "The Hit."

It's treated as folklore among avid college football fans. It's the time Jadeveon Clowney, then a 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end at the University of South Carolina, lit the sports world ablaze with a swift show of brute force in the 2013 Outback Bowl.

Die-hards plastered it on T-shirts. Pundits swiftly debated whether or not it was the best hit of all time. Videos, from every angle, emerged. Fans and analysts alike infamously dubbed it "The Hit," one so vicious it soon became the biggest bullet point on Clowney's college football résumé full of "HE DID WHAT?!" kind of highlights. Consumer Reports recommends the new MacBook Pro after battery fix

After Apple released a fix for the battery issue that caused Consumer Reports' MacBook battery tests to go crazy, the organization now recommends Apple's 2016 MacBook Pros — just like all MacBooks that came before them.

The issue originally caused CR not to recommend Apple's new MacBook Pros after it tested them in December. Known for rigorous testing standards, CR found the battery life on all new MacBook Pros wildly erratic, ranging from 3.75 to 16 hours on one model.

As it turned out, the problem was a combination of two factors: an icon-reloading bug in Safari, which Apple has now fixed, and the fact that CR turns off browser cache for its battery test, which — according to Apple — is unconventional and does not reflect actual real-life usage.  Read more...

'Everyone wants us to win' — Twitter's marketing chief on the company's future

What's posted on Twitter inspires headlines, but looking at the last few years of stories about Twitter itself? Not so inspirational.

Rampant abuse is leading high-profile celebrities to abandon the service. Same with c-suite executives and other prominent users. As for everyone else, user growth has all but stalled.

Twitter's aspirations of being acquired suddenly fell under a flood of media reports (which included, pretty much everywhere, reports of the aforementioned harassment problem). The dismay is plainly shown in its three-year stock chart, which investors— those who control the valuation of Twitter— have watched languish. Read more...

Dash cam captures laziest child rescue attempt ever

Hey, it was cold outside.

On a snowy day somewhere in eastern Europe, a confused and unattended child slowly wandered into the street. Thankfully, the kid was wearing fluorescent neon snow gear and traffic was moving pretty slowly.

Just as the kid gets to the main road, a motorist drives beside her, and picks the kid up by the coat as the car drives to safety. Sure, it wasn't the most gentle way of getting the kid out of the road, but it got the job done.

Now Putin is causing drama for Uber drivers in Russia

Uber Technologies Inc. has asked its Russian drivers to temporarily bear the load of a new tax charge, causing some of them quit to avoid paperwork and tax filings.

President Vladimir Putin signed a law in July to levy an 18 percent value-added tax on electronic goods and services provided by global internet giants starting in 2017. Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Microsoft Corp. and Netflix Inc. are registered with Russia’s tax service, according to Vedomosti daily.

Uber has passed these duties on its drivers, requiring them to pay the VAT on the company’s service fee. Uber will later reimburse them these payments, it said in an e-mailed response to questions. The company will refrain from raising prices for passengers, it added. Read more...

Review round-up: Here's what people are saying about 'The Young Pope'

The Young Pope is not for everyone, though maybe that's exactly how he likes it.

Paolo Sorrentino's upcoming series stars Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII (born Lenny Belardo), a newly elected, intimidating pope.

The mere concept of the show — about about a pope who has been alive for fewer years than other popes — inspired tons of memes on Twitter.

But critics'  were not as amused as the meme creators.

Here's what some critics had to say about the show, which debuts on HBO on Jan. 15.

Obviously, living in a storage unit is illegal, and given the hot plate and toaster oven this guy has, it's also a fire hazard. Just look at the placement of his paper towel holder.

Paul Ryan didn't give us the dab we wanted, he gave us the dab we deserved

Your company isn’t saving the world: Why you should stay there anyway

I once knew a guy named Brian. Brian was a recent college graduate and he wanted to work for an environmental nonprofit, but he couldn’t find a job. All of the organizations that interested him could only offer volunteer roles, and Brian needed to pay his rent.

Brian used the huge company as his personal training ground. He talked to people in every department to learn about different functions of the business. It's now much harder to see if someone edited a Facebook post

Have you ever made a cringeworthy mistake in a Facebook post? Don't lie, the answer is yes.

If you have a sense of shame, Facebook at least allows you to go back and correct your gaffe by editing the post, a feature that certain other social media networks still haven't added.

But evidence of your slip-up lived on with the tiny "Edited" label on the bottom of the post, signaling to your followers that you cared just enough to correct yourself on the internet. Sad.

Apparently, however, that's no longer the case. It seems that Facebook has removed the on-post edited label, making it much more difficult to know when someone actually took the time to fix their mistake. Read more...

Here's how much Tesla will charge new owners for using Superchargers

So long, free charging.

After announcing in November 2016 that it will start charging new Tesla owners for using its Supercharger network, Tesla detailed exactly how it will go down.

Tesla previously said that everyone who orders a Tesla after Jan. 15, 2017, or pre-ordered a Tesla that won't arrive before April 2017, will be charged "a small fee" for charging at Supercharger stations. The company also said it would grant Tesla Model S and Model X (but not Model 3) car owners 400 kWh of free Supercharging credits per year.

Now we also know how much will the fee for charging beyond those credits will be, but it's not one number, as the pricing is different in various regions and countries, and varies depending on whether you're charging at or below 60kW (Tesla calls this tier 1) or above 60kW (tier 2).  Read more...

Why Nintendo Switch games come on tiny little cards

Nintendo is ditching discs and going all in on game cards for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo revealed what the Nintendo Switch game cards look like in a Nintendo Treehouse Live stream Friday, showing a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild card roughly the same size as a Nintendo DS or 3DS game card. Although it seems like a technological downgrade, this is the best option for the Switch.

Discs are bad for mobile

Discs have been the standard physical medium for console games for more than a decade, but discs just don't make sense for the Switch. Including a disc drive on the hybrid home/mobile console would completely kill its mobile capabilities. Read more...

Watch this stirring pro-Muslim American PSA, produced by Katy Perry

History has a tendency of repeating itself, but it's often too late before we realize it.

In a commanding short film, a new PSA—with Katy Perry as executive producer—asks us to take a moment to asses the parallels between historic tragedies and the fear of many Muslim-Americans in the wake of a Donald Trump administration.

Directed by Japanese-Australian filmmaker Aya Tanimura, the video tells the true story of 89-year-old Haru Kuromiya who was raised in Riverside, California, and lived through President Franklin D. Roosevelt's executive order to place all those of Japanese descent in internment camps.  Read more...

Crippling ice storm to encase 1,000-mile stretch of U.S. in ice

A severe ice storm threatens to plunge millions of Americans into darkness and paralyze travelers from Oklahoma to Washington, D.C. through the weekend. In some areas, at least an inch of ice could coat everything from tree limbs to roadways, downing power lines and causing surreal scenes of destruction.

The storm system responsible for the freezing rain, which is liquid precipitation that freezes upon contact with a surface,  will vault copious amounts of moisture into a bitterly cold air mass already in place across much of the Central U.S., Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.

This will set up heavy precipitation, with snow in areas that have the deepest layer of cold air, and sleet and freezing rain where the wedge of cold air is more shallow, with above freezing air temperatures aloft.  Read more...

7 Young Pope episodes we thought of if HBO is interested

This Sunday HBO will premiere their much anticipated series The Young Pope, which hopes to finally give an answer to the age old question, "What if the Pope was also young?"

The idea is incredibly exciting and I just want to be part of it. So, free of charge, I have come up with seven episodes for the series that I think HBO should really take a look at.

“The Board Is My Shepherd”

A local skate park and teen hangout in Los Angeles is bought by a rich real estate titan who wants to bulldoze it and build an investment firm. After the teens protests, he agrees that if one of the teens can win the local skateboarding competition, the park can remain open.  Read more...

Future-focused: More young adults have five-year plans than you might think

Paid Content by Aflac

If you believe everything you hear (or read) about young adults, you may expect a deer-in-headlights reaction when you ask one of them about their five-year plan.

This, however, is often the farthest response from reality.

Todays twenty-somethings are more tuned into future-planning than many people think. What’s confounding to older generations (and especially their parents) tends to be that their future-focused priorities are simply unconventional: Rather than investing in a home or purchasing sedans, for example, millennials are increasingly allocating their savings toward experiential ventures — such as dining, travel, pricey gym memberships, starting their own businesses and lifelong learning opportunities Read more...

Nintendo Switch conference translator had a bit of trouble keeping up

We're sorry to say that this guy did not have a great day at work on Thursday.

During Nintendo's press conference announcing its new console, the Nintendo Switch, one translator had a bit of trouble keeping up with the CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture Inc., Suda 51. There are some cringingly awkward pauses, long periods of silence, and plenty of uh's.

He might've been thrown off by the CEO's startling entrance because, TBH, we were too.

Fisherman trapped on ice floating downstream tries to keep his cool

We wish we could find out how this journey ends.

Yes, we can almost hear the frantic thoughts of this fisherman stuck on a detached chunk of ice floating downstream. He can't come up with a solution, though, and neither can we.

Does he jump off and swim his way to shore? Find another lonely fisherman and join his iceberg? See a bear along the way and shout for help?

We don't know, but best wishes.

'Jeopardy!' celebrated the internet last night with meme-themed categories

"I'll take Yas Queen for $800."

Somebody actually said that on Thursday night's episode of Jeopardy!.

"Yas Queen" was just one of the glorious meme-based categories which appeared on the first round of the popular game show. Other categories included "Keyboard Cat," "Dad Bod" and "What Color is the Dress?"

You probably have already put two-and-two together to realize that this means Alex Trebek had to say "yas queen" out loud. To the internet's delight, he did.

"Yas Queen" is one of the categories tonight and everyone has to say it#Jeopardy

Get a sneak peek at the first ever hourlong 'Simpsons' episode

It's hard to believe, but despite being on the air for 28 seasons, The Simpsons has never aired an hourlong episode — until now.

In this Sunday's episode, “The Great Phatsby" — which takes TV's most beloved family, adds a dash of Empire and a twist of Gatsby — Mr. Burns tries to relive his glory days by throwing a lavish party. In the process, he crosses paths with a mysterious music mogul who likes to splash his cash.

After being conned and reduced to bankruptcy, Burns seeks revenge on the producer with the help of Homer, Bart, rapper Jazzy James (Keegan-Michael Key) and the mogul’s ex-wife, Praline (Empire star Taraji P. Henson). They'll also get a musical assist from Snoop Dogg, Common and RZA (guest-voicing as themselves). Read more...

Trump's inaugural crowd expected to be half of Obama's 2009 gathering

He might make for watchable TV, but when it comes to getting Americans off their couches, it looks like Donald Trump can't quite pull Barack Obama-level crowds.

President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural crowd on Jan. 20 is expected to be half of what President Barack Obama's was back in 2009, though Trump's gathering should still be pretty big(ly).

Depending on which estimate you look at, the turnout for Trump is expected to be anywhere from 700,000-900,000, unless you're counting protesters, in which case, the crowd may climb into seven figures.

'Exorcist' author William Peter Blatty dies at 89

Novelist and filmmaker William Peter Blatty, a former Jesuit school valedictorian who conjured a tale of demonic possession and gave millions the fright of their lives with the best-selling novel and Oscar-winning movie The Exorcist, has died. He was 89.

Blatty died Thursday at a hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, where he lived, his widow, Julie Alicia Blatty, told The Associated Press. The cause of death was multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, she said.

Inspired by an incident in a Washington suburb that Blatty had read about while in college, The Exorcist was published in 1971, followed two years later by the film of the same name. Blatty's story of a 12-year-old-girl inhabited by a satanic force spent more than a year on The New York Times fiction best-seller list and eventually sold more than 10 million copies. It reached a far wider audience through the movie version, directed by William Friedkin, produced and written by Blatty and starring Linda Blair as the young, bedeviled Regan. Read more...
