A robotic NASA mission could help us mine asteroids in the future

In 2030, a robotic emissary launched from Earth seven years earlier will lay eyes on a metal world never seen from close range.

That NASA spacecraft, known as Psyche, will carry with it a number of instruments designed to spy on the the metallic world called 16 Psyche as it circles the sun.

16 Psyche — which is 130 miles wide — could be the remains of the dead core of a planet whose outer layers were stripped from it in the early era of our solar system, and it probably has hundreds of scientific mysteries just waiting to be unlocked within it.  Read more...

Hundreds of members of the LBGTQ community twerked and booty bounced their way to a dance party outside of Vice President Mike Pence's house in a posh D.C. neighborhood last week to protest the inauguration.

Americans really want to read 1984 during Donald Trump's presidency.

Just days after rising to the best-selling books list on Amazon, the George Orwell dystopian novel has sold out of print copies on the e-commerce platform.

Amazon did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment. However, when looking up the book on Amazon's website, it appears to be sold out in paperback and hardcover.

The book follows people in a totalitarian state called Oceania, where "newspeak" —the official language — contains no negative terms. The objective of the fictional language is to eliminate people's personal thoughts by restricting expressiveness. Read more...

Fans are having a sexy good time with the new 'Mass Effect' trailer

BioWare role-playing games and sex sort of go hand-in-hand, and Mass Effect: Andromeda is no different.

The Canada-based developer has built up a reputation for giving players a variety of choices to make as they play, up to and including who they would most like to bone. So obviously when the new Andromeda trailer dropped, the question on everyone's lips was: "Can I kiss that alien?"

Yes, yes you can. Humans too, apparently.

Facebook is giving longer videos a bump in your News Feed

Remember the days when we talked about how Facebook and Snapchat are competing for these things called views? Yes, we cared about the overall number of three-seconds versus one-millisecond of time people spent on the apps.

Forget about those meager numbers. Facebook wants your eyes to be glued for much longer than three seconds. Why? Television has more dollars.

On Thursday, Facebook announced longer videos watched through will be given a higher priority in the ranking of the News Feed. Hidden within a jargon-filled, 411-word News Feed FYI (a blog dedicated to publishers and other Facebook Page owners), Facebook shared a change to the algorithm that addresses completion rate: Read more...

New leaked Galaxy S8 photos finally reveal its headphone jack status

Another day, another major Galaxy S8 leak.

One day after The Guardian published an exhaustive look at Samsung's upcoming pair of flagships, noted leaker Evan Blass has come out with his own report on what the new S8 models will look like. And, not to be outdone, he has a new photo of the handsets, which appears to confirm several rumors.

As has been reported earlier, Blass says both S8 models will ditch the home button, which will make the displays larger than even the company's Note devices. Trump was finally shamed by the Internet into doing something right

This afternoon, President Donald Trump's @POTUS account was blowing up Twitter feeds—but for once, it wasn't because of his tweets.

Instead, the @POTUS account's security was the trending topic, after screenshots posted on Twitter appeared to reveal the fact that it was linked to a basic Gmail account. And also, possibly, lacked basic privacy protections. That prompted a slew of outside attempts to access the account, and what appears to be action from the Trump team to finally fix the issue.

Earlier this week, WauchulaGhost, a hacker with a history of hijacking ISIS-linked Twitter accounts, reached out to CNN to warn of potential security vulnerabilities of notable Trump-tied handles, including those of the President, First Lady and VP.  Read more...

What one 'Supergirl' story arc taught me about coming out

No one tells you how to come out. There’s no guidebook that details exactly what you should say, no song that accurately sums up how you should feel and no television show that allows you to look at a character and say, “this is my journey." Or at least I never thought there was, until this season of Supergirl.

That’s not to say that television hasn’t given us tons of coming out stories over the years. In the past year or so especially, we’ve seen an influx of gay characters and same-sex relationships dominate the small screen, though there is still a long, long way to go. (According to GLAAD, 2016 had the highest percentage of LGBTQ series regulars on broadcast TV since the organization started measuring diversity on the small screen — 43 regulars (4.8%) were identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer.) The Glitoris is the shining beacon of pleasure we need

People have been making penis art for an eternity, but finally one artist is giving the clitoris its due.

Australian artist Alli Sebastian Wolf has created “The Glitoris,” which is exactly what it sounds like a: a giant, glittery clit.

The striking work is a 100:1 scale model of one of humanity’s most elusive organs. Wolf crafted it from foam, lycra and sequins (which show where the clit’s 8,000 nerves run).

The result is hard to ignore, which Wolf told Mashable was part of the idea behind her work.

“Almost no one I talk to knows about this incredible organ – how far it extends beyond what you can see on the surface and how it works,” she said. “I wanted to make something that celebrated it, a giant golden sparkling shrine that would help people come to love it like I do.” Read more...

Scientists are turning dragonflies into tiny cyborg drones

One company has decided the ideal tiny drone should take its cues from the natural world of insects — specifically the dragonfly.

When Draper, an independent biomedical solutions lab, set out to make its own mini-fliers, it cut out the middleman. It got some of the insects and outfitted them with cutting-edge navigation, synthetic biology and neurotechnology systems to create a swarm of cyborg dragonfly drones.

The tiny hybrids are part of an internal R&D project at Draper called, appropriately, DragonflEye.

"DragonflEye is a totally new kind of micro-aerial vehicle that’s smaller, lighter and stealthier than anything else that’s manmade,” said the program's principal investigator Jesse J. Wheeler in an interview posted online by the company. “This system pushes the boundaries of energy harvesting, motion sensing, algorithms, miniaturization and optogenetics, all in a system small enough for an insect to wear." In the latter city's case, the peaceful protest involved an attempted flag-burning, which was broken up when police sprayed fire extinguishers into the crowd. Negative reaction to the incident framed most media reports of the day.   Read more...

The Guardian's misquote of '1984' unwittingly starts 'tiny train world' meme

Need a daily reminder that the internet is a post-ironic cesspit of misinformation, in-jokes and cynicism? You came to the right place.

You may have noticed that George Orwell's dystopian classic 1984 is (dare we say it) trending again, for some strange reason that may or may not be related to the messed up state of politics and current obsession with "fake news."

Anywho, The Guardian quoted Orwell’s treatise on totalitarianism in a column on Thursday and it was hella sage. But also, hella wrong.

As an example of our current climate where the "facts are what we say they are," the piece quoted the following passage in full: Read more...

Artificial intelligence could one day diagnose skin cancer from smartphones

Can an algorithm detect skin cancer as well as a dermatologist? Scientists say yes, at least, according to a new study out this week.

A group of researchers at Stanford say they have trained AI to be as reliable as human dermatologists at detecting skin cancer and that the technology may someday be able work on smartphones.

The researchers, who published their findings in the journal Nature this week, first trained a neural network using 129,450 photos representing more than 2,000 different types of skin conditions. Using one of Google's image recognition algorithms, the teams says they were able to train the neural network to identify both malignant and benign skin lesions. Read more...

Trolls really piled on this country's hyped annual radio countdown

If there's one thing the internet is good for, its disrupting normal proceedings.

So nobody should have been surprised when a number of cheeky social media users piled on the "Hottest 100," an annual tradition hosted by Australian indie radio station Triple J.

A public poll that's been around since 1993, the countdown is announced in real time online as well as over the radio, setting it up as the perfect fodder for "sh*tposters."

So, while the station counted backwards from 100, merry pranksters like Ben Lawson and Jack Taylor showed off their trolling skills. Read more...

More trouble for Uber in India's Silicon Valley

As ride-hailing companies Uber and its local giant Ola expand their operations in India, antique regulations continue to emerge as roadblocks.

The latest testament of this comes from Karnataka, the home of crucial market Bangalore, where the state government is considering deeming pool-sharing services of both the taxi services illegal.

According to the state transport department, pool services such as UberPOOL and Ola Share violate contract carriage permit. The archaic regulation restricts a cab from pickling up and dropping passengers during the course of a ride on a particular route.  Read more...

Watch fans go nuts in theaters when Sunny Leone appears as 'Laila' in 'Raees'

It is no secret that Sunny Leone is wildly popular in India. The adult entertainment star, by virtue of her second innings in Bollywood, is not only the most searched personality on Google India, but also a rage-driver offline.

Sample this. Leone's dance moves as Laila in the recently released film Raees, starring Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, sent crowds into a tizzy at theaters across India.

Twitter users have shared videos of live crowds breaking into jigs en masse as soon as Leone appears on the big screen. And an evidently amazed Leone has been retweeting them calling it "the greatest thing" she's seen. Read more...

Google Chrome will now reload web pages faster

Don’t you find it annoying when Chrome takes an additional second or two to reload a web page you had visited only recently? Google does, too — and it is making things smoother.

Google says refreshes on Chrome browser are now about 28 percent faster, adding that improvements should be visible on both mobile and desktop versions of its marquee browser.

Explaining how it managed to cut short the time it takes to reload a page, Google said it is changing the way its browser handles what is known as "validation."

Every time a user visits or revisits a page, Chrome requests hundreds of network requests for it. In the latest version of Chrome, likely v56, the browser only validates the main resource (things that it believes may have been changed and need to be validated).  Read more...

Good in small doses: The book that may make you want to take LSD

Calmer. Happier. Way more productive.

That may sound like the first line of a Radiohead song. In fact, it's how author Ayelet Waldman felt after trying a tiny dose of LSD every third day for a month.

Waldman's curious experiment is the subject of A Really Good Day: How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage and My Life, a highly readable nonfiction diary released this month by Knopf.

The book makes a compelling case for why acid should be decriminalized like marijuana in several states. Both drugs have medical benefits, and neither have ever been shown to kill a human being at any dose. (Those stories from the 1970s about acid droppers jumping out of windows because they thought they could fly? An urban legend largely spread by one TV presenter.) Read more...

Verizon's 'Embeds' takes you on the political campaign trail

The news from the campaign trail isn't just delivered by the anchors you see on television. Before it's read aloud into an earpiece or scripted for a teleprompter, the day's headlines are identified and dispatched by a 20-something reporter often thousands miles away from the TV studio.

Instead of sitting at a desk, staring at Twitter or reading other news sites, a group of young journalists spend months working 20-hour days, walking through small towns and sleeping on buses. These "embeds" are the people who day by day watch and listen to the politicians and the people they speak to.

A new six-part show Embeds, released with Complex Networks on Verizon's mobile streaming app go90, chronicles what it's like to cover a campaign, with a comedic flair. The series opens with one of the embeds in a threesome. The candidate is obsessed with spaghetti. A campaign staffer casually threatens the embeds with a vision of sharp objects.  Read more...

Talking to robots might make you feel better about your love life, new research shows

Robots are being built and tested to help humans with many things — from delivering food to folding our clothes. As we look to them to perform day-to-day tasks in the future, researchers are working more and more toward giving robots human qualities, like the ability to give emotional support.

Researchers from Northwestern University, Cornell University and the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel wanted to see if it's possible to have robots comfort people in times of emotional need. They conducted a test simulating a scenario where humans almost always require emotional support: when they're thinking about dating.  Read more...

Sorry, Steve Bannon, Jake Tapper isn't going to "shut up" because you told him to

On Thursday, The New York Times released a predictably terrifying interview with Trump advisor Steve Bannon, who advised the media to "keep its mouth shut."

In response, most members of the media did exactly the opposite by opening their mouths so wide since they had lost the ability to breathe in oxygenCNN's Jake Tapper might have had the best reaction to the interview: a knock-out viral blow, delivered in approximately 5 seconds or less.

"The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while," Bannon told the Times. Read more...

Trump closed the White House comment line so people are calling his hotels

The White House has, in recent history, offered up a line of communication to the public in the form of a phone line where citizens can call and leave comments for the President. Staffers screen these comments, categorize them, and decide what to pass along.

Apparently, not anymore.

Since entering office, Donald Trump has yet to re-open the comments line, which was shut down during the transition process according to ThinkProgress. Now, callers are greeted with a recording that instructs them to instead Facebook message the White House— a feature that doesn't exist, or, leave comments in the online web form. Read more...

If you want to smile, watch B-Rad the baby sloth do his thing

This might be, without exaggeration, the absolute cutest baby sloth we've ever seen.

B-Rad is a three-toed baby sloth from Costa Rica and we can only imagine that he is the star of the Kids Saving the Rainforest Wildlife Animal Sanctuary

Everything about this Brave Wilderness video is too much. B-Rad hanging out on a fluffy stuffed sloth, the little squeals he makes, the part where he eats the leaf, his tiny hands scratching his tiny body.

Not even the show's host Coyote Peterson can handle how incredibly adorable this creature is.

Our hearts are bursting from too much cute animal exposure.  Read more...

NHL ref loudly curses out player during penalty announcement

Hockey is the most fun sport to watch because it's reckless, there are a bunch of fights and even the REFS are badasses who don't take anyone's sh*t.

NHL ref Frederick L'Ecuyer was in the middle of calling a penalty on the Columbus Blue Jackets when he suddenly decided to let one of the players know exactly how he feels.

If you happened to notice that the ref doesn't seem to care that he just yelled "F*CK YOU! F*CK YOU!" to an arena of 20,000 people, it's because he doesn't.

No, Fox News didn't get Trump to flash the White House lights on and off

On Friday, it was Fox News' turn. Network anchors joked in a segment that they'd asked Donald Trump to turn the White House lights on and off if he was watching the show. Their request was followed by a video clip of a light flashing in a far right window of the building as if he really were playing along.

How this California company fits five acres of farmland into 40-foot shipping containers

All over the country are food deserts – generally urban, impoverished or isolated communities that are devoid of grocery stores and farmers markets, and thus lack access to fresh food.

Local Roots is a Los Angeles-based urban agriculture company that is seeking to fill this void. Through a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of technology, the team has developed a solution to this growing problem.

“We see Local Roots as pioneering the way for making urban agriculture a real solution to the problem of food access in this country,” says Allison Towle, Director of Corporate Communication.

Local Roots designs, builds and operates indoor growing centers – called TerraFarms – that are made from shipping containers. Each pod contains five acres of farmland. Let that sink in; five acres of fresh food is grown within the footprint of a 40-foot metal box. Read more...

After backlash, Mark Zuckerberg drops lawsuits against Hawaiians over their land

Mark Zuckerberg is dropping his lawsuits that would have forced hundreds of people in Hawaii to sell their land.

The "quiet title" process, which allows rightful ownership of land to be decided before a judge, would likely have granted ownership of Hawaiian land to the Facebook founder instead of hundreds of family members who share in partial ownership.

"To find a better path forward, we are dropping our quiet title actions and will work together with the community on a new approach. We understand that for native Hawaiians, kuleana are sacred and the quiet title process can be difficult. We want to make this right, talk with the community, and find a better approach," Zuckerberg wrote in a an op-ed for the Kauai newspaper The Garden Island announcing his decision to drop the cases.  Read more...

There's a way to make supermarket tomatoes taste good again

Supermarket tomatoes don't exactly pack a punch of flavor by comparison to their heirloom counterparts.

The bland little fruits are a little watery, a little sour and a little sweet, basically a shade of what their traditional varieties are.

But now, a team of scientists may be on the way toward making the typical tomato flavorful again.

The tomato's fresh flavor has been lost over the course of about 50 years of breeding, according to Harry Klee, a co-author of the new study in the journal Science.

"We're just fixing what has been damaged over the last half century to push them back to where they were a century ago, taste-wise," Klee said in a statement. "We can make the supermarket tomato taste noticeably better." Read more...

Adorable police pug will handcuff you with his cuteness

Not every dog can make it as a police dog.

Police dogs have to be highly intelligent and trainable. They are generally medium to large in size. They have great stamina and endurance.

These attributes don't really apply to pugs. Pugs are small, round and cute. They don't really scream authoritative or police work.

However, that didn't stop the Rochester Police Department from welcoming a pug into the police family. Cops posted a picture of Hercules the pug to the department's Facebook page, and the cutest police dog that ever was went viral.

"He's a sucker for a belly rub and does not enjoy running," reads the description of Hercules. This makes sense, as everyone knows a good police dog has to be relatable to the people. Read more...

Why 'Counter-Strike' tournament pros think the Swiss system is more fair

The 10th Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major, taking place this week, changed the format of how teams progress through preliminary matches. Based on what we've heard from viewers and competitors at the tournament, it's a well-received change.

Instead of the typical group stage format, the ELeague Major in Atlanta used a Swiss system in the preliminaries to determine which teams made it to the playoffs. After the preliminaries wrapped up Wednesday, we got in touch with competitors and ELeague talent who shared why they thought it was not only more exciting for viewers, but better for teams, too.  Read more...

The British media just roasted Donald Trump, and he hated it

The Trump administration's relationship with the media has been, shall we say, fractious to date - from his deeming CNN "fake news" to his press secretary's various run-ins with the members of the press.

But he hadn't seen nothing until the Brits rolled into town.

Eschewing the Lifezette school of easy questioning, Laura Kuenssberg from BBC News turned up to Trump's joint conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May with this epic poser:

"Prime Minister, you've talked about where you agree, but you have also said you would be frank where you disagree with the president. Can you tell us where in your talks you did disagree, and do you think that the president listened to what you had to say?" Read more...

Some evidence Trump is probably using to make his wild voter fraud case

Disclaimer: This is a humor piece and these are *probably* not the pieces of evidence President Trump is looking at. Then again we can't know, because he hasn't produced any evidence.

President Trump's claims about widespread voter fraud — he believes that there were between 3 and 5 million illegal votes cast — are certainly shocking.

They're also completely unfounded and not based on any shown evidence.

Until now.

We've figured out at least seven pieces of evidence that President Trump could be looking at, all of which would explain his belief that there were millions of illegal votes cast in the 2016 election. Read more...

Facial recognition cameras are planned for New York City bridges and tunnels

Last fall, New York governor Andrew Cuomo laid out a sweeping initiative for the bridges and tunnels of New York City. The "transformational plan," which is part of a larger, $100 billion infrastructure effort for the state, aims to "reimagine New York's crossings" for the 21st century and the future — a future that, in some aspects, looks to be straight out of Minority Report.

The plan calls for the installation of cameras equipped with advanced facial recognition technology in an effort to track everyone entering and exiting the city via the extensive network of tunnels and bridges. Those systems would be implemented in the name of increased security against terror threats, but its potential ramifications for privacy and abuse by law enforcement agencies has experts concerned.       Read more...
