This Valentine's Day, give the gift of a hissing cockroach

Still searching for a perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your special someone? Have you considered a hissing cockroach?

If you didn't just sprint screaming from the room, hear us out. You're not giving anyone an actual, living insect. Instead you're naming a cockroach after your loved one. And not just any roach, one of the Bronx Zoo’s Madagascar hissing cockroaches. You can't beat that in terms of unexpected romantic gestures.

Gothamist reports that the zoo has once again launched their annual romantic gesture, complete with a cute video.

You pay $10 (proceeds support the Wildlife Conservation Society), and the zoo sends a digital certificate that you can bestow upon the person for whom you’ve named the roach. If you up your contribution to $35, they’ll include a printed certificate and a box of chocolates (presumably untouched by roaches) or a lovely little stuffed cockroach. If you want both the candy and the plush roach, you can can have the whole package for $50.  Read more...

Dude makes extremely smooth save after face-planting on the stairs

If you've ever walked down a flight of stairs, you probably also share an irrational fear of falling down with an crowd of people watching you. It's OK, it's totally normal.

This dude decided to play it real risky and use his phone while walking down the left side on a staircase. Unfortunately, he failed to notice the landing in the center of the staircase, and he tumbled face-first flailing down a few steps before making a miraculously smooth recovery.

It seems as if he pulled off the fall without a single soul noticing his embarrassment, except the camera, of course.  Read more...

Brent Musburger, iconic sports broadcaster who lit up internet, retires from ESPN

You are looking live at the end of an era.

Brent Musburger — whose sonorous voice and signature "you are looking live" introduction to games were synonymous with sports telecasts — will call his final game for ESPN this month.

Musburger became a household name as television grew into the dominant medium of the sports-entertainment industrial complex. On social media, however, his career wasn't quite so cut and dried. While an icon on TV, he sometimes became a lightning rod online.

Let's first flash back to college football's national title game in 2013. Musburger provided a bit of drooling commentary when ESPN cameras cut to a shot of beauty queen Katherine Webb, who was then the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron. The moment vaulted Webb to celebrity, while video of Musburger's commentary instantly hit viral status on YouTube. If you type "Musburger" into the YouTube search bar today, "McCarron's girlfriend" is still the first autofill to follow.  Read more...

Watch Oprah lose her mind when she meets Mary Tyler Moore

"People write me letters, I go 'Who would I think that about?'" Oprah asked herself on the set of her talk show in 1997. "Mary."

Mary Tyler Moore, who passed away on Wednesday, was a powerful role model for women in entertainment for generations. 20 years ago, Moore surprised Oprah on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the host's emotional reaction is beautiful to watch.

"Thank you Mary for being such an inspiration to us all, all of us women in television," Oprah said.

The clip opens with Oprah discussing how much Moore inspired her to record her own Mary Tyler Moore Show opening to Oprah. When Moore saw the clip, she called a shocked Oprah on the air — and when Oprah revisited the memory, Moore showed up on set. Read more...

Report: Trump is still using his old, unsecured Android phone

President Donald Trump is still using the Android phone he tweeted with during and after his campaign, even though it's an unsecured device, The New York Times reports.

The article, which documents President Trump's shut-in lifestyle in his first few days at the White House, is filled with juicy tidbits about our leader's household preferences. But the most interesting (and disturbing) part comes when we learn how he has elected to spend his downtime:

The story infers that this access is what led to the President's now-infamous tweet about the "carnage" gripping Chicago, which likely came in response to a segment on last night's edition of The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News. Read more...

Man who lost his testicles while showing off his scuba bong is fake news

The AP is cracking down on fake news, even if it's old and has already been debunked.

In September a story surfaced of a man losing his testicles after a freak accident involving a bong and a scuba tank. It appears as if the story first was reported on the site IsThatLegit.com, and let me tell you, it's not legit at all.

Here's a couple lines from the original post:

The initial story claimed the man was from Calgary, but the post then reappeared on the site BostonLeader.com with the location swapped for Boston.

Snopes was quick to debunk the story when it was first being shared, but that wasn't good enough for AP, so they fact checked it themselves five months later.  Read more...

This giant offshore wind farm will be the largest in the U.S.

The largest offshore wind farm in the United States is one step closer to becoming a reality.

The 90-megawatt project planned near Long Island, New York, would be only the second offshore wind farm to operate in the country, which lags way behind Europe and China when it comes to wind power.

The wind farm cleared a major hurdle on Wednesday after Long Island's public utility unanimously approved a long-term contract to buy its electricity. Without this deal, the project's developers would have a harder time convincing banks to finance the wind farm's construction.

Trump's voter fraud investigation may want to start with his own daughter

Donald Trump brought out the ALL CAPS Wednesday to show just how seriously he's taking his unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the election that he won.

These dogs will have better insurance than 18 million Americans if Obamacare is repealed

In their very first month in office, Congressional Republicans have been busy chipping away at the law that gave 20 million Americans health insurance, then replacing it with their brand-new vision: [blank].

Sure, there are a few wonky replacement plans floating around, but nearly all put the most vulnerable Americans at risk. By choosing to repeal the Affordable Care Act and come up with a replacement plan later, Republicans risk losing anxious insurers from the market, effectively killing the exchange. The Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that 18.2 million Americans would lose their insurance if the Republicans didn't come up with a comprehensive replacement plan, leaving millions sick, bankrupt or worse. Some Facebook users will start seeing ads in an unexpected place

Facebook can only pop so many advertisements into your News Feed before it drives you crazy.

But it needs to keep selling more and more of them to keep up its juggernaut growth. And the company is worried that it could run out of ad space in its News Feed this year.

That's probably why Facebook is now turning to some untapped real estate: its Messenger platform.

The company announced Wednesday that it's testing new ads in Messenger that look a lot like ones you might see in your News Feed.

The ads are carousel-style, meaning that users can swipe sideways through posts from several different brands within the same frame. Mercifully, they don't appear in your actual conversations (at least not yet), but rather on the platform home screen below your most recent messages and "favorite" friend column. Read more...

The latest media source under fire is ABC News, who used a mocked up image of Donald Trump in the Oval Office to promote anchor David Muir's interview with the president.

ABC News actually grabbed the image straight from a September 2016 article in The New Yorker, who created it to imagine how Trump's first term would pan out.

I don't want to be dramatic but Ansel Elgort's new single has the creepiest cover art of all time

Ansel Elgort, the actor best known for bringing to life young adult novels like The Fault In Our Stars and Divergent, is also a DJ, a fact you could probably sense somewhere in your bones.

— Ansel Elgort (@AnselElgort) January 25, 2017

Elgort's smoldering gaze provokes questions and gives no answers. Here are some of our key concerns about the scene taking place:

  1. Is his junk glowing like a flashlight?

  2. Why is his bathwater so blue? The tub appears to be filled with Riptide Rush Gatorade.

  3. Does this girl have a face? Although you can see the reflection of Elgort's head in the background of the image, none of the mystery woman's features are visible in the metallic surface.

  4. Their hair is wet, but their bodies are completely dry. Again, they are in a bathtub.

  5. What shape is the back of the tub? It doesn't line up! Read more...

Private emails are back! But this time Hillary Clinton's not involved.

There was a time, not so long ago, when cybersecurity seemed to be a major concern to the Republican Party. The GOP railed against Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. This was careless, they said, and should disqualify her from the presidency.

Surely it's also careless then for senior White House staff to use a private email server that was hacked during the presidential campaign, which they are, according to Newsweek.

Train crashes into a FedEx truck and sends packages flying

Well, some FedEx customers are not going to be getting their packages on time.

A FrontRunner train collided with a FedEx double tractor trailer truck in North Salt Lake, Utah, on Saturday, completely destroying the trailer and sending packages flying in the process. Luckily, the train did not make contact with the tractor.

The gate and light warning system typical for train crossings was not engaged during the accident, leading the driver of the truck to believe they had the all-clear to cross the tracks. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, if there is a power or signal issue, the gates are supposed to drop into the "down and active" position as a safety precaution, but clearly something went wrong here. Everything you need to know to master Snapchat's new search bar

For years, one of the biggest criticisms of Snapchat has been that the app's intentionally unintuitive design makes it difficult to use, particularly for new users. While longtime users are well-acquainted with the app's swipe-based interface and other quirks, it could be difficult for newcomers (and, let's be honest, older users) to grasp.

Some of that is now changing.

Earlier this week, Snapchat officially rolled out its latest update, which added a search bar that makes it much easier to find things within the app — although it does take some time to get right.

One man has tirelessly put up decorations for his neighbours for 10 years

There are friendly neighbours, and then there are amazing ones like this guy.

One man has put up elaborate festive decorations for his neighbours for the past ten years. And he's even generously funded each effort himself.

Tan Koon Tat, a carpenter from Singapore, typically puts up the decorations at the corner of the carpark and lobby area of his apartment block.

The 56-year-old does this for major holidays each year — he's done Christmas, Eid al-Fitr or Hari Raya Puasa, and Diwali.

You can now point your phone at Japanese text and get an instant translation

Google's Word Lens is a smartphone app that lets you point your camera at text and get an instant translation on-screen. That's nifty enough as it is when you're navigating a foreign country, but it gets far more useful when you're dealing with an alphabet or characters you can't even read.

On Thursday, Google announced that Word Lens now supports Japanese, meaning you can go to Japan, point it at kanji characters — of which there are thousands — and see what the heck they mean right on your phone's display.

As Google points out, you could already take a photo of Japanese text and get a translation with the Google Translate app, but Word Lens shows you the translation live as you move the phone around. Even better, it works when you don't have internet connectivity.  Read more...

Here's the one thing about the new 'Star Wars' title you may have missed

You may think there's only so many clues you can glean from one three-word episode title, but frankly you'd be mistaken.

It's still a horribly long time before Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi blasts its way onto our screens, so what better way to fill the void than with furious speculation?

Since the title was announced on Monday, social media has been buzzing with possibilities — but amid the frenzied conjecture about who exactly "The Last Jedi" could refer to, it was easy to overlook one simple fact:

Love how Ep.VII and Ep.VIII titles make a sentence: The Force awakens the last Jedi#TheLastJedi #StarWars

This country is raising $600 million to counter Trump's anti-abortion policy

The Dutch government is setting up an international safe abortion fund just days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to cut U.S. foreign aid.

On Monday, Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy — known as the global gag rule — which prevents non-governmental organisations working abroad from receiving federal funding for family planning if they perform abortions or even talk to their clients about abortion.

Up to 20 countries and several foundations have already said they would support the Netherlands in setting up an international abortion fund to plug a $600 million funding gap caused by the reinstatement of the global gag rule, according to Lilianne Ploumen, Dutch minister of foreign trade and development cooperation. The cafe had initially shut down in 2013 after owner Henry Mulyana started receiving death threats, but was reopened a year later, with a picture of Adolf Hitler and swastikas still on display.

Man finds touching video on his grandmother's phone after she passes away

LONDON — Usually, a jaunty video of a grandparent getting to grips with their new phone would a source of amusement — but in the case of the clip above, the whole thing is so much more poignant.

Taken in a flowery garden, the 44 second clip features the man's grandmother talking to two unseen people about her new phone.

Nothing makes you look at a beloved children's film with fresh horror quite like an Honest Trailer.

This time ScreenJunkies, the gang behind the viral parody series, have fixed their sights firmly on the lovably twisted Roald Dahl tale Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory — and they've even drafted in singer Michael Bolton to lend a hand.

Behind the dizzying student loan game Navient allegedly played

The U.S. government’s $1.3 trillion student loan program has a dizzying array of repayment plans that can overwhelm borrowers. That’s one of the things loan servicers are supposed to help with.

Navient, the nation’s largest student loan servicer, handles accounts for more than 1 in 4 Americans who owe money for their higher education. The company sends borrowers their monthly bills, collects payments, and counsels them on their options. Government lawsuits filed on Jan. 18 accuse Navient of taking shortcuts that minimized its costs. They say that hurt some borrowers who could have paid off debt more quickly, while simultaneously putting distressed borrowers in more debt by steering some into plans that put off payments — leading to ballooning balances — instead of income-based repayment programs. Women around the UK are urging her to tackle Trump over human rights and equality.

Groups of schoolchildren have penned letters to May asking her to raise the issue of gender equality with Trump. "Just because there are male and female people, it doesn't mean we have a different level of respect," wrote a group of 9-year-old children.  Read more...

The downside of a bionic penis? A two-week boner.

Imagine having a two-week boner. That’s just what 40-year old Andrew Wardle is about to experience when doctors turn on his new bionic penis.

Wardle was born with bladder exstrophy, where the organ forms outside the body. While doctors were able to insert it back into his body surgically when he was a baby, he grew up with no penis, though he did have testicles.

Wardle, who lives in the UK, recently decided to undergo a lengthy process where doctors built him a functioning phallus. (It had been done once before on another British man, Mohammad Abad, whose choice to lose his virginity with a famous sex worker got a lot of attention.) He has required more than 100 surgeries to get here, but he is now on the last leg of his journey. And before you ask: no, he didn’t have any say in how big it is. Read more...

Learning and trap music together at last.

Twitter user @AfroAmericannnn uploaded an adorable video of a father and son singing the classic ABC song to the tune of a trap beat.

This video is incredible, not just because they made an old song seem brand new, but because the duo are wearing matching outfits which takes the cuteness factor to a whole new level

We hope that more songs intended to teach children will get a trap makeover. Read more...

Stellar pregnancy announcement features a dog wearing glasses

New rule: all great pregnancy announcements must include dogs wearing glasses.

Take this delightful photo, for instance, which was tweeted by user @kaitlynserna earlier this month. Serna's cousin enlisted her dog, Kasper, to announce that she and her boyfriend were expecting a baby — by posing the pup with a "book" called How to Be A Big Brother.

That's right. This dog can read. Amazing.

My cousin has been w her highschool sweetheart for 7years no ring, no baby, just a son Kasper 🐶 BUT THEN SHE SENDS ME THIS 😭😭 wtf how cute pic.twitter.com/weGfQ9u5dn

'5 Calls' site makes calling representatives easy for people who hate talking on the phone

If you're a blue state voter who's spent any time on Facebook in the past few months, you've probably been overwhelmed by caps lock Facebook posts begging you to call your representatives.

The posts can feel simultaneously redundant and contradictory — call your senator to oppose Betsy Devos..no wait, send Paul Ryan a postcard first! — and render some of us completely impassive. A new site, "5 Calls," aims to make calling that much easier, giving users easy one-minute scripts they can read to their representative each week.

Trump capping a pen with his tiny hands gets a huge Photoshop battle

President Donald Trump has long been a popular subject of Reddit's r/PhotoshopBattles, but now that he is the leader of the free world, expect to see every silly photo snapped of Trump get turned into a meme.

Almost immediately following his inauguration, President Trump took part in a signing ceremony where he made his cabinet picks official, as well as a few other pieces of housekeeping. The pens used to sign the documents are kind of a big deal, and Trump took extra care to recap each pen before handing it over to a greedy person awaiting a valuable keepsake. Read more...

First human-pig chimeras created, sparking hopes for transplantable organs — and debate

Pig embryos that had been injected with human stem cells when they were only a few days old began to grow organs containing human cells, scientists reported on Thursday, an advance that promises — or threatens — to bring closer the routine production of creatures that are part human and part something else.

These human-pig “chimeras” were not allowed to develop past the fetal stage, but the experiment suggests such creations could eventually be used to grow fully human organs for transplant, easing the fatal shortage of organs: 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for lifesaving transplants, but every day two dozen die before they get them. Girls are affected by stereotypes by age 6, new study shows

Who is "really, really smart?" Boys or girls?

A new study found that young U.S. girls are less likely than boys to believe their own gender is the most brilliant.

While all 5-year-olds tended to believe that members of their own gender were geniuses, by age 6 that preference had diminished for girls — a difference the researchers attributed to the influence of gender stereotypes.

"We found it surprising, and also very heartbreaking, that even kids at such a young age have learned these stereotypes," said Lin Bian, the study's co-author and a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Read more...

FBI Director James Comey is coming to Austin to narc on your SXSW fun

If you've had the year FBI Director James Comey has had, it totally makes sense that you might want to go spend some time in the Texas sun, rubbing elbows with celebrity hipsters and frequenting food trucks.

So Comey is taking his talents to the 2017 incarnation of the SXSW festival in March.

The SXSW conference appearance will likely be less controversial than his role in the 2016 election as he'll simply sit down for a chat on March 13 with Newseum CEO Jeffrey Herbst to talk about national security.

And, presumably, to narc on all the cool kids smoking weed at the hippest music sets. Read more...

The entire sports world is also mocking Trump administration's 'alternative facts'

Donald Trump aide Kellyanne Conway entered the history books and became late-night comedy fodder when she tried to rebrand falsehoods, untruths and outright lies as simply "alternative facts" during a nationally televised TV interview Sunday.

The sports world hasn't stopped laughing since. Conway's ignominious line is now popping up in press conferences, game notes and even on jumbotrons.

Our most recent arrival to the alternative facts party is Houston Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team has struggled recently. Following a loss to the Celtics on Wednesday night, D'Antoni was asked about his team's 3-5 record since Jan. 13.  Read more...
