Obama's first statement since leaving the White House is a three-paragraph subtweet

Barack Obama's first statement since departing the White House might not please The Donald.

In a short, three paragraph missive issued by his spokesperson Kevin Lewis, Obama said he was "heartened" by the millions of Americans taking to the streets and socials media to protest some Trump's first actions since his inauguration.

Obama is "heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country," the statement said.

It went on to reiterate the former president's call for citizen action in his final speech to the country, reminding that Obama spoke about "how all Americans have a responsibility to be the guardians of our democracy — not just during an election but every day." Read more...

Why 2017 will be the year of the Access Economy in Australia

You may not know exactly what the "Access Economy" is, but odds are that you're already taking full advantage of it. Whenever you stream your favourite TV show on Netflix, rent a room via Airbnb or hitch a ride with Uber, you're contributing to this blossoming market.

The Access Economy is a business model based not on permanent ownership, but on temporary ownership. This is cost-effective and sensible for most people, which is why it seems to be taking off recently. And this year, Australia will see the Access Economy boom more than ever before.

One of the key contributors in this growth is access to fast broadband. It allows us to get in contact with people who are offering alternative goods and services that aren't exactly what we'd get from traditional, big-name companies. So as our connections become faster and stronger, so will the advancement of these digital innovations. Read more...

Dialing up the past: How did the early internet affect the media?

Amit Rathore is the founder and CEO of Quintype, a modern media technology platform and premium monetization service.

If you're old enough, think back to the early days of the internet. It was a tapestry of low-res images, comic sans, scrolling banners, and painfully slow dial-up connections. Back then, it was hard to imagine what a ubiquitous and important thing it would become. In fact, an infamous Newsweek article dating back to 1995 was titled “The Internet? Bah!”

Harder to imagine still was the impact it would have on industry — and media publications in particular.

Today, the traditional media industry is in crisis. Since the internet began to provide open and free access to news and media content, leading publications have struggled to find viable monetization models. According to Pew Research, non-digital advertising revenue fell by 10% in 2015 alone, and in 2014, the latest year for which data was available, newsroom employment also declined by 10%
A handful of forward-thinking legacy publications — the New York Times and the Washington Post, for example — have begun to find their feet in the tough new digital landscape. Others like Buzzfeed are turning to direct sales Read more...

Fitbit is stumbling... so it's making a smartwatch

In unsurprising news, Fitbit released a preliminary statement this morning detailing its disappointing financial results for the fourth quarter of last year.

The statement was headlined by an announcement of "cost reductions to improve efficiencies and strengthen performance," which, in plain terms, means layoffs. These "reorganization efforts" amount to the elimination of six percent of Fitbit's workforce, or about 110 employees.

Even as the Fitbit eliminates those positions and tightens its belt in some areas, however, it looks to move into a new vertical within the wearable market: smartwatches.    Read more...

Hackers cause hotel to ditch keycards for old-school keys and locks

Earlier this month, staff at Austria's four-star Romantik Seehotel Jägerwirt tried to sign into the resort's computer systems, but couldn't.

They had been infected by a kind of software called ransomware

When hackers deploy the tech, it encrypts a device, rendering it useless. Once a ransom is paid, the hackers then deliver an electronic "decryption key" which can be used to restore the device to normal.

Unless the hotel paid a ransom in Bitcoin totaling close to $1,800 dollars, it wouldn't be able to access its reservation system, cash desk system or issue electronic keycards.  Read more...

Forget touchscreens, this smartphone concept wants to use holograms

Your future smartphone could be entirely voice activated, displaying your text messages and other info with holograms. At least, that's the idea behind Alo, a new smartphone concept that imagines a touchscreen-less smartphone.

Created by French designer Jamie Olivet with art direction from acclaimed designer Philippe Starck, Alo ditches the typical smartphone display. Instead, the voice-activated phone will project holograms from its camera that show your text messages or let you watch videos, according to Dezeen's interview with Oliviet.

While the core of the device is molded aluminum alloy, the outer shell is a "gelatinous, supple and natural envelope that perfectly fits your hand," Olivet writes on his website. I am not really sure what that means (I've reached out to Olivet for more information) but Deezan reports the surface will also vibrate and give off heat as another means of interaction. Evidently, it's not enough that people keep dolphins by yanking them out of the water for selfies. Now some rubbish human has put human clothing on one.

A dolphin was spotted swimming around Koombana Bay in Western Australia Monday, wrapped up in a tank top or t-shirt.

The image, captured by a member of the public, was quickly picked up by both the Dolphin Discovery Centre and the Department Of Parks And Wildlife, with the latter organisation requesting more information via their Facebook page.

Clarifying the statement in an interview with the ABC, the department's Pia Courtis explained that it would be "unusual" if the dolphin had just swum into the clothing all by itself.  Read more...

You can sure buy whatever you hell you want on the internet these days.

The hatching was chronicled on Harrison's YouTube channel and the emu was given the name "Kevin," despite being female (something Harrison discovered later.)

Why has this country become Tinder's favourite testing ground?

As a country, Australia makes a great petri dish.

It has a relatively small population, it's English-speaking and it has an estimated smartphone penetration of 84 percent — all qualities that make it the ideal place for Tinder to test its new features, according to the dating app's founder.

Australians take to product updates faster than other markets, Tinder chairman Sean Rad told Mashable in Sydney on Tuesday. And that's why features like Tinder Social, which allows users to set up group dates, were piloted here first. Read more...

This terrifying sea creature could be one of our earliest ancestors

Is it legal for authorities to check your social media at the U.S. border?

If you're not from the United States, U.S. government officials may request your phone at the border. They may scroll through your Facebook feed. They may search your phone contacts. But according to lawyers, whether or not this is actually legal is a confusing mess.

According to immigration lawyers Mashable spoke with on Monday, the law is, at best, unclear on whether government officials can comb through pieces of your digital life to determine whether you are allowed to set foot in the country.

Right now, immigration lawyers told Mashable that government officials often ask for immigrants and foreign travelers to hand over their phone so the official can scroll through social media information and more. But if that practice were to come up against a serious legal test — or if the practice became more widespread — lawyers say it would likely run into huge legal hurdles.  Read more...

This Danish ad will challenge you to step outside your defining box

Sometimes it's difficult to find the things that we, as human beings, have in common.

We live in times when the "Us vs Them" narrative has become mainstream. We get caught up in minutiae and risk losing sight of what binds us, rather than divides us.

This Danish television station ad, entitled "All that we share," challenges this narrative with a simple but effective formula.

In the video, groups of Danes get onto a stage, stepping into delineated areas on the floor that define them by opposition — "The high earners" vs. "Those just getting by;" lifelong Danes vs. immigrants; "Those who trust" vs. "Those we try to avoid."  Read more...

Daimler, the German automaker behind the Mercedes-Benz, will manufacture autonomous cars meant for Uber and and operate them through the ride-hailing company, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced in a blog post Tuesday.

"We can combine Uber’s global ridesharing network with the world-class vehicles of companies like Daimler, so that Uber riders can have a great experience getting around their cities," Kalanick wrote.

The partnership is part of Uber's strategy to run a network of self-driving cars, but not build them itself. The ride-hailing company already operates the world's largest fleet of human-driven cars while owning only a fraction of them.  Read more...

MacBook Pro with Touch Bar banned from bar exam in multiple states

Some law students who plan to take the bar exam this year may not be able to use their favorite laptop. May states are banning the use of Apple's latest MacBook Pros because of the predictive nature of the Touch Bar, though some are still allowing it if the feature is disabled.

ExamSoft, which makes testing software for the Board of Law Examiners, says the Touch Bar's default setting, which displays "predictive text depending on what the student is typing" could compromise "exam integrity."

Bar exam proctors have been instructed to look for the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro Touch Bar laptops and manually disable the Touch Bar's adaptive display so that it shows a standard row of function keys. Read more...

WhatsApp is testing a feature that lets you 'revoke' unread messages you sent prematurely

Soon, you may be able to take back your drunk or needlessly angry texts on WhatsApp.

The Facebook-owned messaging service is reportedly testing the ability to edit or recall messages that have already been sent. This means you can delete or revise a message even after your friend's phone has technically received it.

The feature only works if the recipient has not read the message yet. On WhatsApp, this is signified by a blue tick mark. If the message has simply been received by a phone but not read — with grey tick marks, in other words — the feature still works.

The feature was first spotted by Twitter account @WABetaInfo, which tracks features that WhatsApp is testing across platforms. Read more...

Ashton Kutcher taught Poshmark that second-hand high-end shopping is cutthroat

Secondhand fashion marketplace Poshmark has always aimed to sit at a crossroads between a shopping site and a social network.

The platform allows anyone to set up their own online store — though its emphasis is on women's designer brands — through which they can offer used clothes that appear in the Instagram-like feeds of their followers alongside wares from brands and boutiques.

But the company recently encountered a problem familiar to many fast-growing social media sites: A user backlash over how the feed was being ordered.  Read more...

Breast cancer survivor gets tattoo over scars, ends up falling in love with the artist

When Nina Cristinacce was diagnosed with cancer, her life was turned on its head. After successful treatment and a mastectomy, she decided to celebrate her life with a beautiful floral tattoo.

But when Cristinacce went along to get her tattoo, little did she know that she'd end up falling in love.

Cristinacce wanted to get a tattoo to hide some of the scars she'd gained after her surgery.

"A logical thought was to tattoo the parts of my body I didn’t like to look at, and developed the idea of sunflowers and poppies running up one side from my thigh, over my ribs, up to my reconstructed breast and spilling over onto my back," said Cristinacce.  Read more...

Calendar will help you count down the days until Trump is out of office

In the current political climate, being aware of the full weight of time is practically a civic duty.

This tear-off calendar, made by GFDA duo Brian Buirge and Jason Bacher, wants you to know exactly how many days are left in Trump's first presidency—if you're OK with acknowledging that information on a daily basis, anyways.

The calendar, currently on Kickstarter, counts down to Jan. 20, 2021, the day that a new President will be sworn into office, assuming that's what ends up happening. Sometimes assumptions are worth buying calendars over.  Read more...

Every day, this dog picks up where the newspaper delivery person left off

Like many neighborhoods, Simmons Drive in Boulder, Colorado, has a newspaper delivery person. Unlike most neighborhoods, it also has a newspaper delivery pup.

Quincy, a senior dog who lives with his owner, Paul Godan, has been moving papers from the curb to each neighbor's doorstep for more than 11 years. Before that, another dog belonging to Godan did the task — let's just say no one on Simmons Drive has had to retrieve their own paper for a while.

Talk about a golden retriever.

Quincy is particularly good at sniffing out the paper underneath snow, Godan told NBC 9 News in Boulder. This is great, because plunging your hand into snow first thing in the morning is virtually guaranteed to ruin the rest of your day. Each day, Quincy saves dozens of beloved human friends  from that terrible fate. Read more...

This tiny wearable can tell you when you need a drink

Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed an ideal wearable to pair with a fitness tracker for those extra sweaty workouts: a tiny Bluetooth-sensor that tracks skin hydration.

The sensors have much more potential than just reminding runners to drink up after a 5K — according to the research team, the hydration-tracking tech could be a valuable tool for monitoring vulnerable people working in stressful, hot conditions.

"It’s difficult to measure a person’s hydration quantitatively, which is relevant for everyone from military personnel to athletes to firefighters, who are at risk of health problems related to heat stress when training or in the field,” John Muth, a co-author of a paper describing the work, said in a statement.  Read more...

Humans fold as AI comes up aces in poker competition

Now computers can bluff.

This should be a terrifying thought, but it’s a breakthrough moment, watched by thousands of people across 151 countries on the Twitch network, all of them witness to the first time a computer artificial intelligence (AI), Libratus, soundly beat four of the world’s best poker players at heads-up no-limit Texas Hold’Em.

“At a high level, this means now that we have proven the ability for an AI to do strategic reasoning in imperfect situations has surpassed that of humans,” said Carnegie Mellon University Professor of Computer Science Tuomas Sandholm on Tuesday during a press conference following the AI victory at Rivers Casino “Brains Vs. A hidden 'Donkey Kong 64' coin is finally found after 17 years

We used to think there were 976 coins to collect in Donkey Kong 64. Thanks to a thorough speedrunner, we now know there are 977.

Speedrunner Isotarge discovered the previously unknown location of a rainbow coin in Donkey Kong 64 in the Fungi Forest level using data analysis tools. You won't need to data mine to find it yourself, though — it's perfectly smashable in a normal playthrough. The dirt pile housing it is cleverly hidden in some tall grass, masking it from view where it has stayed undiscovered for 17 years up until several days ago.

A premiere date for the show has yet to be determined, but we do know that the lead role will be played by The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green, and that Discovery will be set in the "Prime Universe" of the previous TV series, not J.J. Abrams' alternate cinematic timeline.

Snapchat gets serious about advertising

Snapchat is opening its advertising floodgates.

As Snap reportedly buckles down to go public, the company behind the ephemeral sharing app said Tuesday that it is now adding several more ways for advertisers to plug into its system and buy self-serve ads in the app.

Snapchat had previously not let just any advertiser into its app, limiting opportunities to companies that worked directly with Snapchat's team. The move effectively opens the door to a much wider set of brands that might have previously felt limited by the need to work directly through Snapchat's own platform.

New photos from venerable spacecraft show off incredible details in Saturn’s rings

We've never seen Saturn looking like this before. New images beamed back from the Cassini spacecraft show Saturn's distinctive rings in unprecedented detail.

While the rings, as a whole, look like perfectly smooth disks from a distance, when viewed from close range, the smaller-scale bits of ice, dust and rock that form the rings can be spotted.

The photos reveal waves in the outer rings caused by the motions of some of Saturn's moons and clumps of material within the rings. Some of the high-resolution images also harbor views of tiny "moonlets" in the planet's rings, according to NASA. Read more...

Slack woos big business with new enterprise service

SAN FRANCISCO — Slack is finally launching the long-awaited enterprise version of its service.

Called Slack Enterprise Grid, the service comes with a range of new features designed for organizations with 500  to 500,000 employees.

Previously, large companies that used Slack didn't have an efficient way to implement the service across their entire organization, which resulted in disparate versions of Slack being used by different teams at the same company.

The new version of the service aims to solve this with unlimited workspaces, which allow multiple parts of an organization to have separate, but connected, areas of Slack. It also comes with shared channels (so those in different workspaces can collaborate) and universal search so employees can search Slack and find information from the entire organization Read more...

Facebook is tweaking the New Feed to crack down on 'alternative facts'

Facebook is switching up its algorithm in its ongoing battle to rid the social network of fake news.

The company announced a change Tuesday that would boost posts "that people consider genuine and not misleading, sensational or spammy" above others in its users' News Feeds.

To do this, Facebook is adding more markers to each post that will signal to its algorithms whether or not a post's information is authentic. Part of that is determined by the source page — the company will take into account whether it regularly posts spam or if it tries to game feed placement by asking for "likes" or comments.  Read more...

When it comes to sex, older people are just like the rest of us: Horny as hell

Think that burning in your loins is going to fade to a mild simmer later in life? Think again.

A new survey from the dating site OurTime, which caters to singles that are 50 and older, has revealed that older people are just as interested in meeting people, having sex and finding love as anyone with a beating heart. They even sext!

While we may all have similar desires, regardless of age, the real bummer for older singles is that 51 percent of them said they weren’t satisfied with their sex lives. It could have something to do with the fact that 46 percent of them haven’t been on a date in more than five years. By contrast, a 2015 big survey done by SKYN® Condoms found that 71 percent of single millennials — those 18 to 34 — were satisfied with their sex life. Read more...

Putting a GoPro on a sword is either a great idea or a really great idea

YouTubers Sam and Niko are on a quest to find the most unique way to capture a sword fight on film. They asked themselves, why not put a GoPro on a sword and see what happens?

What happens is this awesome video.

It turns out that you can't strap a GoPro on a katana, wave it about willy nilly and expect to get some great footage. The first time these guys tried it, the footage suffered so much from motion blur that you could barely see the watermelon getting sliced. But they eventually nail it and it is just so satisfying.
