At Debug Politics, engineers try to fix everything that went wrong with the 2016 election

Less than a week before Inauguration Day, Eli Stein and his hackathon team spent their weekend poring over their laptops in hopes of coming up with something that might help improve American politics.

Hunched in a circle of armchairs next to dozens of other teams, Stein and his group decided on a project they think might be useful: Waze, but for protests.

"Moving forward, there's going to be a lot of protests, hopefully," Stein said of the impetus for his app, which would pull location data to show protesters entrances, exits and bathrooms at demonstrations like those happening across the country next weekend.  Read more...

Google Maps swaps MLK Day for Confederate holiday in several Southern states

It's Martin Luther King Jr. Day across the United States, but if you're searching Google Maps for businesses in three states, that's not the holiday that comes up.

Three southern states — Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi — combine the observed King holiday with a holiday honoring Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

And some users have noticed that when searching for businesses in these three states on Monday, Google Maps' holiday alert chooses to observe Robert E. Lee's birthday over MLK Day, which comes up in other states.  Read more...

'The Young Pope' is not here to make friends

The Young Pope, the already-weird-sounding television show that turned out to be a tad more bizarre than initial speculation, finally premiered on HBO on Sunday.

Jude Law, partially just by nature of being Jude Law, comes off like a dude in a romantic comedy trying to convince a girl that he's bad news. And that's sort of what an American orphan named Lenny, who goes on to become Pius XII at an age that is certainly not old by pope standards, is doing to the Catholic church and even God himself.

Pope Pius XII, simply, is not here to make friends. Here are his sassiest moments from the series premiere.  Read more...

Why everyone is pissed the FBI is celebrating MLK Day on Twitter

Plenty of individuals and organizations showed love to Martin Luther King Jr. on social media on Monday, including the FBI.

The problem? Back in 1964, the agency tried to blackmail the Civil Rights icon into killing himself.

Male employees have a really hard time with performance reviews, study finds

Performance reviews can be tough for anyone. But men take their annual evaluations particularly hard, a new study found.

Adobe surveyed 1,500 U.S. office workers and found that most people think performance reviews are a waste of time. About two-thirds of employees and managers think formal reviews are an outdated way of measuring performance.

But beyond annoyance, office employees are really troubled by the review process. Sixty-one percent of millennials would switch jobs if it meant no more reviews, even with the same title and salary. Forty-seven percent of millennials have looked for a new job after a review and 30 percent say they've quit basically on the spot.  Read more...

The U.S. space program lost another towering figure today as astronaut Gene Cernan, commander of Apollo 17 and the last person to walk on the moon, died at the age of 82 on Monday.

"Even at the age of 82, Gene was passionate about sharing his desire to see the continued human exploration of space and encouraged our nation's leaders and young people to not let him remain the last man to walk on the Moon," Cernan's family said in a statement.

'Genderless nipples' thwarts Instagram's nudity policies

Instagram's insistence on removing photos of any nipples belonging to women (and only women) is well-known. One account, aligned with the #FreeTheNipple cause, is tricking the platform's strict nudity policies.

Genderless_Nipples posts close-up photos of nipples that make it hard to tell whether the photo is of a man or a woman.

Instagram has come under fire before for its strict stance on female nudity, even when that nudity is not sexualized. The app often removes photos showing women's nipples and does not do the same for men.  Read more...

Alibaba unites with Louis Vuitton and Samsung to clean up its reputation

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has a mixed reputation when it comes to counterfeit goods, but it's working hard to make nice.

Alongside partners including Louis Vuitton, Samsung and Mars, the company announced the Alibaba Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance on Monday. The Alliance will use machine learning and other technologies to identify and remove counterfeit goods from its platforms, Alibaba said in a statement.

The move comes after an unfortunate end to 2016 for the company. In December, U.S. trade officials returned the Alibaba consumer-to-consumer platform Taobao to their list of "Notorious Markets" — platforms that are identified as facilitating copyright piracy and counterfeiting.   Read more...

Doctors take inspiration from online dating to build organ transplant AI

When Bob Jones performed one of Victoria's first liver transplants in 1988, he could not imagine that 29 years later he'd be talking about artificial intelligence and online dating.

Jones is the director of Austin Health's Victorian liver transplant unit in Melbourne, Australia, and along with his colleague Lawrence Lau, he has helped develop an algorithm that could potentially better match organ donors with organ recipients.

Comparing it to the metrics behind dating site eHarmony, Jone said they planned to use the specially-designed AI to improve the accuracy of matching liver donors and recipients, hopefully resulting in less graft failures and fewer patient deaths. Read more...

The phenomenon occurs in sharks too, but one shark has shown a remarkable ability to switch between reproduction styles.

Conservative decries Volleys ad for being "all about rooting" and Twitter is obsessed

When the folks over at Volley Australia dreamt up their 2016 #Grassroots campaign, it's likely they were mostly just trying to sell shoes.

But according to Wendy Francis, a prominent member of the Australian Christian Lobby, they had something much more insidious on their mind: A bit of good ol' fashioned rooting. That's "doing the sex" in Australian speak.

Naturally, Twitter's response to the Helen Lovejoy-style concerns over a campaign "all about rooting" was swift.

You're breaking my balls: Tennis pro smashes rival in the groin during match

That must've hurt.

The tense five-setter to reach the Australian Open second round on Monday took a dramatic turn when pro Stanislas Wawrinka slammed a ball at his rival, Martin Klizan's groin.

The defenceless Klizan, standing by the net, was taken by surprise to say the least.

Wawrinka, who later won the match, immediately jumped over the net to apologise. "That was, for sure, a tough shot for him. The thing is there are some players they fake you, and you stop playing and then they just put up the racquet," Wawrinka told SMH post-game.

"So for me I already miss some easy ones. For me the most important thing was to run straight over to him. I just wanted to make sure he was OK. I realised he was OK. I'm sorry I touched him in the wrong place. But I think it was OK at the end," he said.  Read more...

MacBook Pro might become a lot more 'pro' this year, report claims

There was no shortage of complaints about Apple's refreshed, 2016 MacBook Pro line, be it shoddy battery life or absence of any ports besides USB-C. That might change in 2017. According to a report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), Apple will launch new variants of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro this year, with Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors. The Sardar Patel Stadium in Gujarat state is being rebuilt to seat 110,000 people. It will surpass the 90,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground on completion, the Press Trust of India reported. The stadium could seat 54,000 before being razed down.

India houses some of the largest sports stadiums in the world.

Kolkata's Eden Gardens, an iconic cricket venue, could hold over 100,000 people before its 2011 upgrade that brought down the seating capacity by 40%. The same city is also home to a multi-sports venue, The Salt Lake Stadium, that can seat about 100,000.  Read more...

Tom Hardy is definitely returning to 'Mad Max,' but what about James Bond?

Tom Hardy has made a career out of humanizing larger-than-life characters — from infamous real-world criminals like Charles Bronson and the Kray twins to pop culture icons such as Max Rockatansky, Heathcliff and Bane.

In unsteadier hands, such titans could easily slip into caricature, but Hardy has somehow always managed to excavate the humanity in his villains and the fallibility in his heroes, creating characters whose moves and motives are as unpredictable as Hardy's taste in roles has been.

That's probably why oddsmakers tout Hardy as one of the favorites to play James Bond, if Daniel Craig declines to return for a fifth outing.  Read more...

The White House's digital arm is using Steve Jobs' words to lure tech talent

With only a few days left in President Obama's administration, the White House branch that handled some of his most important technological endeavors is looking to raise its profile in Silicon Valley.

The U.S. Digital Service, an Obama-founded White House branch dedicated to improving and expanding the federal government's various online services, launched a new marketing campaign on Tuesday that appeals to potential tech industry recruits with a familiar face: Steve Jobs.

The group claims the campaign is the first marketing material to ever feature footage of the late Apple co-founder outside of the Cupertino company's own advertising.  Read more...

Farmer comes up with legen-dairy way of popping the question

There are traditional ways of proposing and then there’s this.

It was Christmas Eve in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone when Anna Martin’s boyfriend Ashley Farrell led her to the cow shed to receive her present. She had already been told she was getting a cow for Christmas. It was only after she spotted the calf that Anna began to get suspicious.

"As we were walking across the yard I saw a cow and calf in the shed and questioned if that was my calf (because I knew it should be bigger)... I had just got the words out and the cow turned around so I could see the writing." Read more...

Modified Tesla Model S goes from 0-62 mph in 2.1 seconds

We already know that the Tesla Model S, especially in its most powerful, 100D iteration, can get ludicrously fast

But it doesn't stop there. A modified version of the fastest Model S, created for the Electric GT Championship, is even faster, reaching 0-100kmh (0-62mph) in an insane 2.1 seconds.

The number, which according to MotorAuthority has been officially confirmed by Electric GT, means the car speeds up from 0-60mph in about 2 seconds. No production cars come close to being that fast; for comparison, the fastest "regular" Model S speeds up to 60mph in 2.4 seconds. Read more...

7 year-old's Taylor Swift impersonation is pretty close to perfect

Watch out Taylor Swift—you've got some stiff, pint-sized competition in 2017.

Seven-year-old Xia Vigor absolutely slays in her performance as a mini-Swift during a segment of  “Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids," a Philippine TV show in which kids perform hit songs from their favorite musicians.

While Vigor has performed on the show before, her rendition of Swift's "You Belong With Me" is spot on, and even includes a flawless Swift surprised look, classic red lips and a perfect hair toss. The judges came to a consensus that's hard to argue with: Vigor is adorable and clearly belonged on that stage. Read more...

Young Thug didn't show up to a music video shoot but that didn't stop the director

If you had $10,000 to shoot a music video but the star never showed up, what would you do?

Pomp&Clout director Ryan Staake faced this dilemma on a shoot for rapper Young Thug's song "Wyclef Jean." But, Young Thug never actually stepped foot on set.

Rather than scrape together footage to create a makeshift video, Staake cleverly turned the whole situation on its head—and the result is a highly entertaining, meta-masterpiece of a music video.

The video starts with a conversation about the vision for the project, but it's quickly explained with interjected typed sentences, drawings and captions all describing how things went awry. Read more...

Before Belle, Emma Watson turned down the chance to be Cinderella

She's a funny girl, that Emma Watson. Most girls would jump at the chance to portray iconic fairy tale heroine Cinderella, but the actress declined to play that particular Disney princess.

In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Watson discussed why Belle spoke to her when Cinderella didn't.

"I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did," Watson told Total Film, explaining she was offered the role of Cinderella in last year's live-action remake, but turned down the part that eventually went to Lily James. "I don't feel like I particularly fitted in when I was younger. There's this kind of outsider quality that Belle had, and the fact she had this really empowering defiance of what was expected of her. In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring." Read more...

The New York Times releases its 2020 report, points to its digital shortcomings

The New York Times has changed a lot in the past 10 years, embracing digital subscriptions and growing into online video and specialty areas like cooking.

It has not been enough to prepare the company for the future, according to the paper's own 2020 report released on Tuesday.

"While the past two years have been a time of significant innovation, the pace must accelerate," the authors wrote in the opening of the report. "Too often, digital progress has been accomplished through workarounds; now we must tear apart the barriers. We must differentiate between mission and tradition: what we do because it’s essential to our values and what we do because we’ve always done it." Read more...

Here's what the Xbox One's new Dashboard 'Guide' will look like

Microsoft teased last week that they'd be making the Xbox One's dashboard just a little bit faster. And in a gameplay stream of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, we got a really quick look at it.

Ten minutes into his stream on Beam, Microsoft's head of platform engineering Mike Ybarra quickly clicked into the new Guide overlay so his viewers could get a sneak peek at it.

"Through one press of the Xbox button on your controller, you’ll be able to pull up the newly enhanced Guide as an overlay on the left side of your screen no matter what you’re doing," Ybarra said in a blog post last week.

The new Guide should streamline access to some of your most-used games, apps and console features. The Guide should also make a few other features more easily accessible.  Read more...

A big Antarctic ice crack is forcing scientists to evacuate research station

Scientists will evacuate in March, the BAS said, due to concerns about the consequences of an ice crack known as the "Halloween crack."

We might finally be getting an explosion-proof smartphone battery

Lithium-ion batteries power most of the portable devices we carry with us every day. The vast majority are designed safely, but occasionally there can be a problem that makes the batteries overheat. If that happens, there's a chance the battery can catch fire.

The potential volatility of lithium-ion batteries received unprecedented attention this past fall because of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fiasco (a design flaw in the battery appears to have been the issue). In response, a group of researchers at Stanford University have designed a battery with a built-in safety feature for when it gets too heated.    Read more...

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert returned to his comedy news roots on Monday by bringing back his regular Report segment "The Word." Now rebranded as "The Werd," the segment focuses on a singular news topic in Colbert's explanation while snarky comments appear in the sidebar.

Colbert homed in on Trump's "repeal and replace" plan for the Affordable Care Act, pointing out that the "replace" part is somewhat lacking: Of the 20 million people under Obamacare, 6 million are working class Trump supporters who would lose health insurance. The repeal would cost $1.5 trillion in estimation and happens to be exempt from a report from the Congressional Budget Office. Read more...

I'm a millennial and, believe me, coffee is not the reason I'm broke

There are many of life's little luxuries I could live without, but coffee is not one of them. That's why I was dismayed to read yet another article shaming me for spending my money on skinny lattes and espressos.

This morning, as I trawled through my Twitter feed with bleary, pre-caffeinated eyes, I saw the "news" that millennials are "spending more on coffee than on saving for retirement".

An article based on a report by SurveyMonkey, and carried out by the investing app Acorns, is hardly representative of population.

Irrespective of the article's shaky foundations, I'm galled that people have so much to say about how I choose to spend my money. I'm also troubled that, yet again, young people are being blamed for the bleak financial outlook they currently face.  Read more...

Using a drone during the inauguration could get you fined $1,414

Drone footage from Friday's inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump would be pretty cool to see for a lot of folks who won't be there. But it's not happening, unless some drone pilot out there is willing to risk a fat fine.

The nation's capital is legally closed to drones, as the Secret Service has ever-so-gently reminded the public in the days leading up to the inauguration.

Piloting a drone in D.C., during the inauguration or otherwise, could earn you a very specific fine of $1,414. If it's a company drone, the drone's corporate owner could be subjected to a slightly less specific-sounding fine of $32,140.  Read more...

'Rogue One' wasn't all that empowering for women, data says

Rogue One was the second Star Wars movie in as many years to boast a female lead. Jyn Erso, leader of the team that stole the Death Star plans, and Mon Mothma, leader of the Rebel Alliance, gave hope to anyone who believes in gender equality — even in a galaxy far, far away.

But according to one data scientist's analysis, there isn't all that much for feminists to cheer in the film. In fact, it turns out that Rogue One had fewer female characters (as a percentage of the total) than any other of the top 10 U.S. box office hits of 2016.

When asked what people could have done differently during the presidential campaign, Handler had a straightforward response: "Stop covering [Trump] so much."

"They were treating him as an entertainer first. It was a reality show. We’ve turned into a reality show," she explained.

"I blame the Kardashians, personally; the beginning of the end was the Kardashians. The way these people have blown up and don’t go away — it’s surreal. Everyone is for sale," she said, alluding to the fact that both the Trump and Kardashian families have benefitted from riding the coattails of countless headlines and media attention, despite the often ludicrous "content" they generate.   Read more...

Margot Robbie's moment is just beginning.

Though it's still in production, the first images have surfaced of Robbie as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya

The Australian actress is strapping on her skates to portray the American figure skater, who famously pleaded guilty to orchestrating an attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan in 1994.

The Obamas paid a visit to Sasha and Malia's donated swing set

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama donated their daughters' swing-set to charity after President-elect Donald Trump turned down an offer to keep it on the White House grounds.

On Monday, the Obama family paid the set — and the kids who now call it their own — a visit at its new home.

As the Washington Post reports, the Obamas stopped by the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter to meet the children living in the 28-apartment shelter, and to play with them on Sasha and Malia's former play set. The president and first lady also assisted the children in painting an indoor mural of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Read more...

Activists are throwing a massive LGBTQ dance party right outside Mike Pence's house

Chevy Chase, the quiet D.C. neighborhood soon to be home to Vice President-elect Mike Pence, is about to get really, really loud.

Activists behind WerkForPeace and #DisruptJ20 have joined together to plan a huge queer dance party outside of Pence's new home this Wednesday, Jan. 18th. Queer dancers and their allies will follow a dancing route through Pence's new neighborhood, hoping to get as close as possible to his home.

"We have planned a route to dance through Pence's neighborhood and celebrate queerness, leaving behind traces of rainbow and glitter that he is bound to see and never forget," Firas Nasr, a representative from WerkForPeace, told Mashable in an email. "Our most important point is to celebrate our love for one another and our diversity through dance and self-expression. He will know we are there!" Read more...

Ed Sheeran just scored his first No. 1 song with 'Shape of You'

Ed Sheeran's 2017 is shaping up quite nicely — he just made Billboard history by becoming the first to have two songs debut in the Hot 100 Top 10.

"Shape of You" is the British singer's first song to hit the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 and "Castle On the Hill" is not far behind in the No. 6 spot.

Sheeran also crushed the Spotify charts.

"Shape of You" was the most popular track in a single week ever with 52,359,013 plays, per a press release, kicking Drake's "One Dance" off of the throne. It's also Spotify's strongest track debut — the record was previously held by Adele's "Hello." Read more...

What the end of Vine means for creativity on the internet

Vine, one of the internet’s most creative social platforms, shuts down today, leaving behind a legacy of comedy, magic, music, vulgarity and the inherent frailty of our social media obsessions.

Similar to its parent company, Twitter, Vine couldn’t grow beyond its roots. There were millions of users but only a fraction of them created the content that drove Vine into public consciousness.

I was one of them, though I could never post at the pace of my peers on the platform, and I wasn't equipped to ride the wave of celebrity and wealth that, for a brief time, came with Vine success. Read more...
