Queen's guardsman granted his little doppelgänger a sweet birthday wish

This guardsman just probably made one young fan's wildest dreams come true.

Before entering Windsor Castle in the UK, one of the Queen's Coldstream Guards noticed Marshall, a little boy wearing a replica of the guard's own uniform, saluting the passing.

But instead of marching on, the guard beckoned the boy over and quickly posed for a sweet picture with his little likeness.

Chaos ensues when these snowtubers don't follow conveyor belt rules

It's all fun and games until someone sits on the conveyor belt.

This great day in the snow turns into a chaotic scene when a group of snowtubers causes a pileup by sitting on their tubes while being carried on a conveyor belt. Tubes are lost, people fall down, wintery panic ensues.

The video was recorded and posted on Youtube by user ATL, and the best part is his confused narration as to how these tubers got this task so very, very wrong.

Don't stand up in a canoe, don't sit down on a conveyor belt.

Kim recalls the Paris robbery in this emotional 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' trailer

"They're going to shoot me in the back," says Kim Kardashian West, reliving the Paris robbery which saw thieves make off with several million dollars' worth of jewelry after holding her at gunpoint in her hotel room. "There's no way out. It makes me so upset to think about it."

The new Keeping Up With the Kardashians trailer for the second half of Season 12 promises that America's pop culture royal family will continue letting us in on the good, bad and ugly parts of their lives.

The show will return in March, but a premiere date hasn't been specified. After some speculation that the show would end following the traumatic event, filming resumed following a brief hiatus. The last new episode of the show aired in November and was filmed prior to the robbery.  Read more...

Kim Kardashian's return continues and casts shade over Kylie

Try as we might, no one can shade Kylie Jenner quite like Kim Kardashian West, so lucky for us she's back and getting the job done.

After cautiously returning to social media after her harrowing trip to Paris Fashion Week last October, Kim began with some pictures of her family and just yesterday, finally, a selfie. We all wondered what would come next.

It didn't take long to get our answer. During a dinner with her sisters Thursday night, Kardashian West posted a series of Snapchats during the gathering. While all the filter-happy snaps were entertaining, the most memorable video starred Kardashian West and her youngest sister, the lip kit maven herself.  Read more...

Pixie turns finding your lost items into an AR game

LAS VEGAS — Remember the Pokémon Go craze? Now, imagine actually doing something useful instead of hunting little imaginary creatures. For example, finding your lost keys.

A new solution for finding lost things, called Pixie, doesn't look very different from similar gadgets: It's a guitar pick-like device that attaches to your keys, cat or whatever it is that you keep losing. But instead of merely beeping, it lets you pinpoint its exact location, augmented reality-style.

Once you've attached your Pixie Points (which is what the pick-like things are called), you fire up the Pixie up on your iPhone (Android is not supported at this time) and you can see how far they are from you. Tap one, point the phone's camera toward its general location and Pixie will actually mark the item you're looking for with a big "X."  Read more...

Startup's pillow pad aims keep your head cool while you sleep

LAS VEGAS — Forget waking in the middle of the night to flip your pillow.

Moona, a French startup, says its smart pillow pad will keep sleepers cool all night, thanks to a closed circuit system that pumps water throughout the pad. The startup showed its pad at the 2017 International CES.

Image: Moona

Moona connects to a small, design-friendly temperature-regulating device that cools water to 64 degrees at most before pumping it through to the pad. The water flows through a closed circuit that they say keeps the temperature relatively constant. The device can also be programmed to encourage waking at a specified time.  Read more...

Fox's 'APB' is the next generation of cop drama, and has the apps to prove it

What if there was an Uber-style app that replaced 911?

That's one of many timely questions posed by Fox's new crime drama APB, a cop show with a tech-savvy twist.

Inspired by the New York Times Magazine article “Who Runs the Streets of New Orleans,” which chronicled entrepreneur Sidney Torres's attempts to reduce crime in New Orleans' French Quarter with a privately-funded police patrol squad that civilians could alert via app, the series follows billionaire engineer Gideon Reeves (Justin Kirk) in his quest to remake Chicago’s 13th Police District into the most high-tech, forward-thinking police force in the world. WikiLeaks threatens to build a database of verified Twitter users

Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, will perhaps be remembered as the day WikiLeaks stopped even pretending to be an organization dedicated to governmental transparency.

After tweeting against government leaks, the organization floated the idea of building a database of information about verified Twitter users.

The theoretical database would include information about the families, jobs, finances and housing of anyone with a blue check next to their name. And, while it's not clear exactly how such a database would be published, it seems that an "online database" would be available to anyone with an internet connection, which is also known as doxing. NBA player finds, uh, creative way to distract opposing team's free-throw shooter

Well, this is a new one.

When Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors stepped to the line for free throws on Thursday night, Raptors center Lucas Nogueira decided to — ahem — adjust his uniform, we guess? Instead he ended up pulling his shorts all the way down.

Whether it was meant as an intentional distraction or not remains to be seen. Either way, it definitely worked. Favors missed the shot.

Intentional distraction or not, it worked. 😂 https://t.co/7CkygLK9XH

Why are laptops getting bigger and heavier again? Blame VR.

LAS VEGAS — Despite declining PC sales, laptops have made serious progress over the last few years.

Apple's MacBook Air and Intel's Ultrabook initiative pushed PC makers to build ever thinner and lighter laptops with sturdier, premium materials like metal instead of plastic. It's been a great half decade of innovation.

But if you've been paying attention to the slew of new laptop announcements at CES 2017, you'll notice a new trend taking shape: Laptops are getting bigger and heavier again, to the point where they're anything but portable.

Why's this happening? Blame it on VR.

5-year-old learns to write first word thanks to Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl'

This kid's spelling skills are bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

New Yorker and Gwen Stefani mega-fan Norah shared a video Thursday of her 5-year-old son, Max, writing his first word: "bananas."

And as he writes each letter, it's clear where he got the word from: Stefani's catchy-to-a-fault 2004 song "Hollaback Girl."

"This year, because of Gwen's tour, I played even more music and he got really into it," Norah told Mashable. "'Hollaback Girl' is by far his favorite song." (A great choice, Max.)

"Max started kindergarten this year and he's learning to read and write," she continued. "We practice his writing every night and one day he just started writing 'bananas' all by himself and when I asked how he knew that he said it was just like in 'Hollaback Girl.'" Read more...

This would've been one of the ballsiest NBA shots ever - if it counted

Marco Belinelli of the Charlotte Hornets nearly pulled off one of the cheekiest shots in NBA history Thursday night.

Nearly. Stupid rules. There should be an exemption for this.

Carrie Fisher's urn is shaped like a giant Prozac pill, like she would've wanted

Carrie Fisher's legacy as a mental health advocate and her fiercely ironic sense of humor were encapsulated in one final gesture: Her Prozac pill-shaped urn.

Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, who died a day apart last week, were memorialized Thursday at a private service in their adjacent Beverly Hills homes. On Friday, paparazzi captured images of Fisher's brother Todd at Reynolds' burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles carrying what looked like a giant Prozac pill — which he later confirmed was his late sister's urn.

"Carrie's favorite possession was a giant Prozac pill that she brought many years ago. A big pill," Fisher told reporters, according to ET. "She loved it, and it was in her house, and Billie and I felt it was where she'd want to be." Read more...

K-Cups for beer? Keuring and Anheuser Busch team up for a booze dispenser.

Could Bud Light K-Cups be coming soon to your home?

Keurig just announced a joint venture with Anheuser Busch-InBev, the beer conglomerate behind brands like Budweiser and Shock Top, to research and develop an "in-home alcohol drink system."

While the announcement doesn't elaborate much on what such a system might look like, it does say it will build off of the technology used in Keurig's failed Kold soda machine and focus on beer, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.

Keurig has been struggling for a while to break free of its reliance on home-brew coffee as consumers have lost interest in its signature disposable cups.  Read more...

Twitter is totally creeped out by Paul Ryan's logo

Note to the House GOP: If people automatically associate your speaker's logo with the Nazi party, even though it resembles a symbol used for years by that office, it might be time for a regroup.

On Friday, Twitter user @EricVespe noticed Paul Ryan's new logo on speaker.gov, which shows an eagle with spread wings, resembles the emblem of the Nazi party. While the resemblance is no doubt unintentional — and almost certainly modeled after the official speaker logo — it's also noticeable. And newly red.

The most dad-ass dad sneaker of all time just became even more dad

No disrespect to the Steph Curry signature sneaker that melted the internet last June, but Nike's Air Monarch IV has always been the most dad-ass dad shoe.

How a 23-year-old kid suddenly became the Oakland Raiders' best shot at a championship

For a moment, the Raiders had it all.

Their best record in 16 years, a ticket to the postseason, a homegrown quarterback having an MVP-calibre season. Oakland's 2016 season was surreal for a franchise that had only seen one Super Bowl in the past three decades.

In theory, Saturday's wild card playoff game against Texas should be cause for celebration, seeing as Oakland hadn't seen the postseason since 2002.

Instead, Oakland's storybook season hangs in the balance.

A season-ending injury to quarterback Derek Carr — and an injury to the guy who replaced him —  leaves the Raiders offense in the hands of a 23-year-old kid named Connor Cook, Oakland's third-string quarterback, who is suddenly the NFL's most intriguing figure as the path to the Super Bowl begins.  Read more...

NYPD responds to captain's absurd comments about rape and Tinder

A police captain made some eyebrow-raising remarks about an increase in sexual assaults in a New York City neighborhood, according to an article published Friday.

His comments were so off-base, and they whipped up a storm of controversy so large, that the mayor's office had to respond. So did the New York Police Department.

In comments reported by local news website DNAinfo New York, NYPD's 94th precinct Capt. Peter Rose distinguished between "stranger rape" and "acquaintance rape," lumping Tinder into the latter.

"They're not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets ... If there's a true stranger rape, a random guy picks up a stranger off the street, those are the troubling ones. That person has, like, no moral standards," he was reported as saying. Read more...

The fantastical magicians' posters that hypnotized turn of the century audiences

c. 1915

Image: Library of Congress

Through the late 1800s, magic shows occupied American stages alongside traveling circuses and vaudeville acts. Near the turn of the 20th century, however, magicians began to occupy an elevated theatrical status, commanding their own one-man shows in prestigious theaters across the United States.

Historically, magicians were often practicing spiritualists and considered tricksters or con men, even occultists. The new practitioners were skilled entertainers and illusionists, striving to obtain celebrity status and erase magic’s spiritualist roots.

The new breed of magicians dressed elegantly and invested in flashy stage props, eschewing “dark magic” for sleight-of-hand spectacles. Entertainers such as Harry Kellar, Alexander Herrmann, and Howard Thurston — not to mention Harry Houdini — became household names. Read more...

Single-wheeled GeoBlade electric skateboard is straight out of a sci-fi movie

LAS VEGAS — Last year, Hoverboard Technologies' Robert Bigler came by Mashable HQ in New York to show me the Hoverboard, a skateboard deck with a disc-shaped wheel at its center.

As futuristic as the Hoverboard was, it was just too expensive at $4,000 for the fully-loaded model. With the product's failed Kickstarter under his belt, Bigler returned to CES 2017 to show a cheaper version called the GeoBlade.

The GeoBlade doesn't stray from the Hoverboard design. TVs are getting so thin, it's like they're disappearing

LAS VEGAS — Where's TV tech going next? If there's one place to find out, it's CES, the yearly Las Vegas show where nearly all the electronics manufacturers bring their wares. But for the last couple of years, TV manufacturers have looked a bit aimless, jumping from one new tech to another, but never quite managing to extend their enthusiasm about that new tech to consumers.

There is a clear trend, though, one that reached new heights this year: the TV itself is getting out of the way. Most of Sweden’s surviving runestones date from the end of the Viking Age, or the 11th century AD

Runestones were primarily raised as memorials to dead relatives, friends or loved ones. They were not used as grave markers, but placed along roads and paths where they could be seen by passersby. Read more...

Polaroid just reinvented its iconic camera

LAS VEGAS — The classic Polaroid camera just got revamped for the modern day.

While Polaroid has previously launched instant print cameras mixed with digital such as with the Polaroid Snap, its newest project, Polaroid Pop, mashes digital and analog in a way that actually makes sense.

The digital camera features a 3.97-inch touchscreen LCD for framing shots and menu navigation. Boasting a 20-megapixel CMOS sensor, the pictures will definitely be clearer than the classic camera's, but some things will look the same.

Polaroid is ditching its mini film for the Pop and bringing back the nostalgic 3x4” picture format most people associate with the brand. The classic border logo will fit around the picture, so aside from quality, it will look like a classic polaroid. However, the Pop uses ZINK Zero Ink paper, which is water- and tear-resistant and has a sticker back.  Read more...

5-year-old skier ignores dad's warnings, clears biggest jump in park

It's generally best to follow your dad's advice. On the other hand, this little skier did not and he cleared the biggest jump on the slopes.

Despite his dad's repeated cries to stop, five-year-old Deegan went flying over a huge jump in the Utah park where his family was skiing last week.

"That was sick! I did it!" a thrilled Deegan said.

Sometimes it's best to go rogue.

BBC morning show hosts introduce wrong guest live on air

BBC Breakfast hosts Rachel Burden and John Kay gave heroic climber Leslie Binns a beautiful introduction on Saturday's broadcast — except Leslie Binns wasn't actually there.

Binns, who rescued a woman who collapsed on Mount Everest, was set to appear on the show ahead of his next climb. But when Burden and Kay introduced him — with much fanfare, we might add — the man in the guest's chair turned out to be Dr. Todd Landman, a political commentator.

"I think you've got the wrong guest, sir," Landman said.

Fortunately, because they're British, everyone had a good, awkward laugh about it. "I have many heroic stories to tell you, but not involving Everest," Landman said.  Read more...

Alec Baldwin trolls Trump with Russian-language baseball cap

From Saturday Night Live to social media, Alec Baldwin has seemingly perfected the art of trolling Donald Trump.

Most recently, the actor posted a selfie to Instagram featuring a Russian-language "Make America Great Again" cap, a clear reference to the president-elect's continued praise of Russian president Vladimir Putin as well as his skepticism that Russian hacking affected election results in November.

According to a translation provided to Mashable by Olga Massov, the hat literally says "Make America Cool Again" — but it's obviously intended to be a mocking take on Trump's famous "MAGA" slogan. Read more...

Clarity promises to be Mint and Digit, combined

There are so many apps that claim to be the solution to saving, investing and tracking your financesClarity Money, a new app, hopes to be the one that puts all of that in one place.

The iOS app is sort of a combination of Mint, which tracks your financial health, and Digit, which saves money in small increments. Clarity asks for your financial information, and from there tracks your spending and suggests ways to save.

The app will look out for deals to lower your bills, suggest subscriptions you could cancel and help you save money for specific goals.

"It dawned on me having been a longtime Mint user that it has a dashboard that's good about telling you what happened in the past, but it doesn't do much to take action to improve your financial health," Clarity CEO Adam R. Dell told MashableRead more...

Here's what the most expensive headphones in the world sound like

LAS VEGAS — It's not every day that you get to try out a pair of $55,000 headphones, Sennheiser's ultra-high-end "Orpheus" HE 1. But on Friday, I got to test an even more expensive pair: Onkyo's $100,000 diamond-studded headphones — and I (almost) got to directly compare the two.

Of course, other than the exorbitant price, there's really no comparison: These two headphones are as different as they come. But that's how my cards fell on Friday; a meeting with Onkyo was set up just before the meeting on Sennheiser, so I tried to make the most of it.

Eyes-on with Hulu's new live TV service

LAS VEGAS — It's going to be a whole new Hulu.

The service for watching last night's shows will soon begin offering live TV as well. The company announced it would add live shows to its offerings — putting Hulu toe-to-toe with cord-cutting competitors Sling TV and DirecTV Now — sometime in the spring. Pricing and plans aren't final, but there will be different tiers and add-ons (including cloud storage), with some premium content (like Showtime) available.

Live TV isn't just getting bolted onto the existing service. With the change, Hulu is re-engineering its entire user experience, which it teased at CES 2017. I got a chance to sit down with Hulu reps and explore the new features and user interface, which combines its on-demand and live content. It's similar to its competitors, but offers some nice perks as well. Read more...

Here's a great reason not to get engaged under a waterfall

Elaborate proposals might be memorable, but they run a few risks, too. For example — just spitballing here — you might drop the engagement ring into a waterfall.

Such was the fate that befell Isaiah Adams and his girlfriend, Grace, who got engaged at Maryland's stunning Cunningham Falls State Park.

Unfortunately, after the big "yes" moment (at least they had that, right?), Adams tried to slip the ring onto Grace's finger ... and it fell straight into the water.

"I was crying from happiness, but then I was crying from fear all at the same time," Grace told Inside Edition in the clip above. Sadly, her fears of losing the ring were founded — it was never recovered. Read more...

Two determined women take on tech industry sexism in a new Secret ad

For women in tech, sexism is so often encountered that it unfortunately comes to be expected.

A new 30-second ad by deodorant company Secret shows just how embedded gender-based bias is in the industry by telling the story of two women pitching their startup to men at the top. The comedic ad, called "Pitch," illuminates the worries and preparation women asserting their tech talents have to go through to prove their value in "the boys' club."

In the spot, two women enter an elevator on their way to a big-deal business meeting. After perfecting their handshake, one takes to quizzing the other on the stats of their startup.  Read more...
