“I’m not going to say I was fun, because I wasn’t,” Basset says, narrating reenactments of The Haircut and Spears' wedding to Kevin Federline. “Everything’s just kind of this blur, you know? Until you hit rock bottom.” Read more...

Can you trust a press secretary who swallows his gum whole?

Sean Spicer took to the podium to take a variety of questions from key media Monday - calling on Fox Business, the New York Post and the Christian Broadcasting Network for the first three questions - but the internet only had one query on its mind.

Can you trust a man who swallows his gum whole?

The new White House press secretary did his best to focus the news agenda on TPP, Skype seats for remote journalists and other issues during the session. But on Twitter, a short segment from a recent Washington Post piece about Sean Spicer's mouth was really striking a chord. Specifically: Read more...

Google Voice finally gets group chat in its first update in 5 years

Google just delivered a very long overdue update to Google Voice.

The company introduced a set of new apps for Google Voice on iOS, Android and the web — the platform's first major update in five years. The redesigned apps now support group and photo messaging, voicemail transcription in Spanish and sport a new layout that makes the apps easier to navigate.

The new "cleaner and more intuitive" design ditches Google Voice's outdated look for one that's more like other messaging apps: conversations are threaded by contact so you'll no longer have multiple threads with the same person, and there are separate navigational tabs for messages, phone calls and voicemails. Is swallowing gum bad for you? Asking for a friend (Sean Spicer)

It sounds like an "alternative fact": Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, apparently swallows dozens of pieces of gum every day.

Spicer said he rips through pieces of Orbit cinnamon gum to keep his palate feeling clean, according to an August story in the Washington Post that found a second life on Twitter this week.

"Two and a half packs by noon," Spicer told the Post in August, when he was still the chief strategist and communications director of the Republican National Committee.

While swallowing dozens of pieces of gum may not sound like a great idea, it actually isn't as bad as popular myth would have you believe. Read more...

'Saturday Night Live' writer suspended over Barron Trump tweet

Apparently, not everything goes on Saturday Night Live.

Katie Rich, a writer for the longrunning NBC live show, learned that the hard way.

The "Weekend Update" writer has been indefinitely suspended from the show after she tweeted a comment about President Donald Trump's son Barron, Mashable has confirmed.

In the tweet, which has since been deleted, she wrote Friday that 10-year-old "Barron will be this country's first homeschool shooter," per Deadline, which first reported the news Monday

NBC declined to comment.

The writer apologized on Monday. The new message is now the only — and pinned — tweet on her profile. Read more...

Reddit's CEO got corrective laser eye surgery—for the apocalypse. I did too.

A feature in the Jan. 30 issue of The New Yorker opens with a story from Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman, about Huffman's decision to undergo vision correction surgery:

It's just one of the many juicy tidbits in the story, which dives into the world of doomsday preppers within the shadowy world of Silicon Valley bigwigs, many of which are completely inaccessible—like keeping a helicopter gassed up 24/7—to us normal, non-founder folks.

But Huffman's reasoning for laser eye correction isn't so crazy, or merely within the means of only a few mind-numbingly wealthy tech czars (like, say, Peter Thiel's insane plot to harvest the blood of the young for eternal life). Or at least, it's not for me.  Read more...

Tom Brady finally opens up about his relationship with Donald Trump. Kind of.

Donald Trump confirmed his ongoing bromance with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady last week, while Brady has generally played the coy card when recently discussing the nation's 45th president.

That changed Monday, when the two-time NFL MVP appeared on a Boston radio show and opened up on the nature of his relationship with Trump.

But if you're expecting some riveting details, don't hold your breath. The media-savvy Brady still kept things pretty vague.

Their friendship goes back a long way, with Brady judging one of Trump's beauty pageants in 2002 to Trump's vehement support for Brady during the "Deflategate" scandal.   Read more...

Why this tech CEO is hopeful about the future of online publishing

President Donald Trump is prompting a tirade against media outlets. Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are clamoring for user attention and advertiser dollars in part by tying exclusive and extensive partnerships.

It's a confusing time to be a publisher as they wonder where best to place and how to format stories and, of course, whether or not everything is fact or an "alternative fact."

Mike McCue is one of those tech leaders hoping to assist publishers with their storytelling and their finances. His app Flipboard provides an audience of 100 million active users and a magazine-like format for mobile, tablet and desktop.  Read more...

The spooky connection between these 2 late MLB players

Ventura pitched his first full major league season in 2014, Marte's last in MLB.

Instead of calling, the White House wants you to message it on Facebook

Before, if you wanted to leave a message for the president, you could call up the White House switchboard.

There you could voice your grievances, worries, and praise by actually dialing a number and talking to someone, or at least someone who could connect you to the appropriate office.

But now, when calling the public lines to either leave comments or get connected to the switchboard, there was a different recorded message.

The comment line (that's 202-456-1111 for anyone who wants to call) states in a recording that the "comments line is currently closed." But that's not all; instead, it urges the caller to send the president an online comment. At that point it gives you two options.  Read more...

Raspberry Pi just got some serious competition

Asus just launched the Tinker Board, its own version of a single-board computer — a form factor popularized largely by Raspberry Pi. Engineers and educators use these "credit-card-sized computers" to create everything from LEGO robots to modified vintage Macs

The Tinker Board measures 3.4 x 2.1 inches, almost the same size as Raspberry Pi. But it has superior specs: Tinker includes 2GB of RAM, twice as much as the Pi. It also has Gigabit-speed Ethernet, while the Pi maxes out at 100 megabits per second.

Frustrated kid politely lets everyone know how he really feels

Siblings can be so annoying that sometimes you just absolutely lose it.

But, if you're in front of your parents, you have to keep your cool. Or in this kid's case, calmly ask permission before letting them totally have it.

A video was posted on Reddit by user mem12791 shows one boy totally frustrated with his brother to the point where he asked his dad for permission to speak his mind.

Hey, at least he was patient and honest about it. This parent gets it.

If all we needed was to politely ask if we could give a big "F*ck you" to our brothers and sisters when they were stealing our stuff, we probably would've taken advantage every once in a while.  Read more...

Blindfolded player beats all the 'Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past' boss battles

With a blindfold wrapped securely around his head, a speedrunner completed Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past using nothing but his ears and unbelievable memory to navigate the world — and it only took him 9 hours and 5 minutes.

Link to the Past Speedrunner ParisianPlayer managed to complete the classic SNES game Saturday, Kotaku reported, without using his eyes in a unique all-bosses, all-glitches blindfolded speedrun. He used path memorization along with audio cues from the environment and hitting objects to beat the game without too many hiccups.

Spanish version of WhiteHouse.gov goes dark in Trump's America

The Spanish-speaking version of the White House website was taken down on Day One of Donald Trump's U.S. presidency.

The page, previously maintained by the Barack Obama and George W. Bush administrations, went dark by late Friday afternoon, as Inverse reports. Now the link WhiteHouse.gov/espanol leads to a 404 page with a message that reads "Sorry, the page you're looking for can't be found."

Among other changes to the official website of the new presidential administration are the addition of strong statements of support for gun rights and law enforcement and the removal of prior information outlined by the Obama administration about climate change policy and the Affordable Care Act, as described by The Washington Post. Shia LaBeouf gets in fight with troll on day 3 of his 4-year art project

The trolls. They're here.

Apparently Shia LaBeouf had very (read: unreasonably) high hopes for the integrity of his latest piece of performance art, a 4-year-long livestream set up outside NYC's Museum of the Moving Image for people to chant "he will not divide us" to their heart's content. Initiated on Inauguration Day, the piece is meant to be a rallying point for anti-Trump protesters.

Naturally, as all things do when the internet is involved, it's not going as planned.

Members of the 4Chan thread /pol/ first rallied together virtually, then IRL, to sabotage the message of the project. Trolls have been visiting the site of the stream and sneaking in messages of the alt-right, white supremacy, and Pepe the frog, a meme somehow associated with both of those things.  Read more...

Meet the new FCC chariman, harbinger of doom for net neutrality

The government's primary media regulator has a new leader—and he's among the most outspoken critics of the net neutrality regulations put in place during the Barack Obama administration.

Aji Pai, who's served as an FCC commissioner since 2012, has been selected by President Donald Trump as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, a role that will give him serious power to reshape how the government regulates the media and the internet.

Pai's appointment is a death knell for the major changes put in place under outgoing chairman Tom Wheeler, which gave the FCC greater power to prevent internet providers from blocking websites, throttling traffic, striking deals to create fast lanes, or really, anything else that would violate the principles of net neutrality. Android Pattern Lock might be vulnerable to (very determined) thieves

Imagine unlocking your phone in a cafe, unaware that a hacker is secretly videotaping you

Theoretically, they could crack your Android code by analyzing your hand movements with computer vision algorithm software, according to a new study — and they don’t even need to see the screen. To be clear, the risk of this happening is very, very low. But it’s still not an encouraging study for the 40 percent of Android users who use the Pattern Lock method to unlock their phones.

Thankfully, few low-level phone thieves have access to that type of tech. Plus, they actually need to swipe your device to break into it, so this is a very unlikely security concern for most people.    Read more...

A group of college students wants to brew beer on the moon, because why not

The moon: Great and all, but don't you think it's missing something? I mean, yes, it could use human-rated habitats, some moon buggies, maybe a little infrastructure. Beyond that, though, what does the moon really need?

It needs beer.

Or so says a team of obviously brilliant (though potentially drunk) engineering students from the University of California, San Diego, who want to brew suds. On the moon. All in the name of science. Their reasoning holds up, too.

The one photo that shows exactly why women are fighting Trump

As one of his first official acts as president, Donald Trump gave women the perfect visual reminder for why they're resisting his presidency and administration.

Surrounded almost exclusively by white men in suits, he signed an executive order commonly known as the global gag rule, which prevents non-governmental organizations working abroad from receiving federal funding for family planning if they perform abortions or even talk to their clients about abortion.

The rule applies even when clinics don't use U.S. funding for abortion services.

Swing Left: Grassroots campaign translates frustration with Trump into real change

In the wake of Donald Trump officially taking office, millions have protested and marched on the streets of cities around the country.  But one question on many people's minds has been: how can those opposed to the new presidency continue to make real change?

One answer comes in the form of Swing Left, a rapidly growing grassroots effort that aims to help Democrats win the House of Representatives in 2018.

The organization has mapped out the 52 so-called swing congressional districts around the country, where Americans can organize and volunteer to help Democrats win districts that hold the closest of political contests. In these places, the incumbent last won by less than 15 percent of the vote — making them the most crucial of political battlegrounds, as Business Insider reports Read more...

Samsung finally put the Note7 scandal to rest—here's what it could do for their future

We may never know why Samsung’s battery manufacturing partners made a handful of critical errors that led dozens of (the once widely-praised) Galaxy Note7 smartphones to overheat, and/or burst into flames.

We also won’t know exactly why most of the 3 million Note7’s that were sold didn’t blow up or catch fire while dozens of others did. The flaws were there, but they obviously needed some other X-factor to trigger the fault.

Think of it this way: If you build two walls, and one's at full thickness and the other's paper-thin, both create a physical barrier you can’t see through. However, if you lean on the paper wall, you’re gonna break through.  Read more...

Mark Zuckerberg's charity just bought a search engine for research papers

Mark Zuckerberg's massive philanthropic organization just laid out the next step in its quest to cure or manage all diseases.

The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative is buying a startup called Meta, which uses artificial intelligence to scan and index research papers in a way that makes them easier for scientists to find.

The group plans to build on Meta's existing product and eventually offer the search engine for free, according to a Facebook post announcing the sale.

The terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The Toronto-based startup's co-founders have said their goal is to make the service the “plumbing” of medical and academic research access. They claim the company's algorithms can parse study authors and subject matter to prioritize more important papers, as well as build information feeds that adapt to an individual's searching habits.  Read more...

Trump's new White House website contains plenty of 'alternative facts'

The Trump administration's disdain for factual information has become abundantly clear from the falsehoods uttered by Trump's aides in recent days, such as press secretary Sean Spicer's inaccurate assertions about the inaugural crowd sizes, as well as senior advisor Kellyanne Conway's use of the Orwellian term "alternative facts" to describe Spicer's figures.

The world of dubious assertions extends deeper, though, to Trump's version of whitehouse.gov, where some of the information presented just days into the new administration is... questionable, if not outright wrong.

Women-only ride hailing services may not be the answer you're looking for

Standing under the light on an empty train platform. The text sent to a friend to let them you're in a cab, just in case.

These are rituals women perform as they move through our cities, but when we think of solutions, gender-segregated ride hailing services are little more than a bandaid.

This city will make you face the music for breaking traffic laws

India's capital city of New Delhi is betting on music therapy to ensure traffic offenders learn a lesson.

The Delhi police is hoping that playing patriotic, religious, and other emotional songs will keep traffic offenders amenable to the training sessions they are required to attend.

For several traffic offenses, the local law requires people to participate in a day-long training session. Some of such offenses include driving under the influence of alcohol, jumping traffic signals, and driving without a valid license.  Read more...

#SadMelania is the new mascot for Trump's America, the internet says

Sometimes life can take a real left turn, you know? Sometimes you wind up somewhere you don't want to be, in a position that comes with a weird acronym: FLOTUS.

And yet, that's the unusual circumstance America's new First Lady Melania Trump has found herself in — according to the internet, anyway.

Following the inauguration of Donald Trump on Friday, social media has been obsessed with a series of photos and videos that seem to imply Melania feels as positive about her husband's swearing-in as the 48.2 percent of Americans who voted for Clinton. Read more...

How Indigenous voices are using social media to #ChangeTheDate

If you've been on Australian social media lately, you may have seen a message: #ChangeTheDate.

Jan. 26 was the first official day of European colonialism in Australia. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, it marks the beginning of a cycle of dispossession and violence.

"Australia Day" has been celebrated across the country on Jan. 26 only since 1994, and Indigenous Australians have been fighting to have the date changed for much longer than that.

More recently, the movement has been coming together online under the hashtag, #ChangeTheDate.

'Rescued' surfer says he didn't need saving, but thanks anyway

Not all those who wander are lost.

It might be the kind of embarrassing quote your mum shares on Facebook, but in the case of a Japanese man "stranded" off the east coast of Australia, it's become oddly accurate.

As Mashable reported last week a 37-year-old man identified as "Toru" was discovered miles offshore after floating out to sea on a surfboard. He spent a staggering 16 hours on the open water before eventually being picked up by a container ship.

But it turns out, Toru had sort of always planned to float out that far. Read more...

So, there's now a campaign to send Sean Spicer Dippin' Dots

Everyone now knows Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer doesn't like Dippin' Dots, the so-called "ice cream of the future" that's a mainstay of humdrum visits to theme parks, county fairs and malls around the U.S.

So it's left detractors an opportunity to strike, by sending Spicer as many of the spherical, flash-frozen treats as humanly possible.

A website called senddippindots.com has been created with the sole purpose of collecting donations to send "truckloads" of the product to Spicer.

Andrew Cafourek and Nick Trusty, who run a web development business called A022, created the site to signal their displeasure at the new administration. Read more...

'Pokémon Go' finally launches in South Korea

Pokémon Go has finally come to South Korea, more than six months after the global phenomenon launched in other regions.

While the South Korean smartphone market is among the more advanced globally, it took months for the mobile game to be released there because of government restrictions on Google Maps, which the game relies on.

South Korea's national security laws prevent companies like Google from exporting government-provided map data, which is necessary to power Pokémon Go's functions.

According to Korean media, the game's maker Niantic Labs had to figure out a workaround for its map in South Korea, so as not violate the law. Niantic didn't specify what that workaround was. Read more...

People are dragging a politician for not knowing where to get toilet paper at night

A candidate for Hong Kong's top office couldn't figure out where regular folks buy toilet paper in the middle of the night.

Former chief secretary Carrie Lam, who's running for chief executive of the country, volunteered an odd anecdote to the press over the weekend. She said in a media session that the first night after moving from her former state residence to a downtown serviced apartment, she discovered she couldn't find toilet paper.

She then resorted to taking a taxi to her former residence to get some — nevermind that she had a 24-hour supermarket near her Wan Chai apartment, or plenty of 24-hour convenience stores along the way which stock tissue paper. Read more...

Google's Pixel smartphones struggle to click in world's fastest growing smartphone market

Despite Google’s aggressive push to lure the Indian market into purchasing its Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, the company has failed to impress the price conscious country.

Google’s first branded smartphones went on sale in India late August, the same month they were globally unveiled. This was a stark deviation from the general norm that sees companies take weeks — and sometimes months — in bringing their top smartphones to India.

But it appears Google’s inclination to India didn’t return same response. The company has so far sold little less than 50,000 units of Google Pixel and Pixel XL in India, according to Tarun Pathak, senior analyst at marketing research firm CounterpointRead more...

Giant wolf-sized otters used to roam the earth 6 million years ago

Giant otters the size of wolves lived in rivers and lakes in south-western China some 6.2 million years ago, scientists have discovered.

The otter, named Siamogale melilutra, weighed about 50kg (110 pounds) and measured up to 2 metres (6.6 feet) in length, according to research published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.

Fossils of the otter, which include a skull, jawbone and teeth, were discovered by palaeontologists at the Shuitangba open-pit lignite mine in China's Yunnan province.

The skull had been crushed during the fossilisation process, so scientists used a CT scanner to help virtually reconstruct a complete image. Read more...

Samsung Galaxy S8 will reportedly launch in April, and LG G6 will suffer for it

Another Silicon Valley guy locks down an escape plan

If there's one guy who can feel safe in Trump's America, it may be Peter Thiel.

Thiel, a venture capitalist who made millions of dollars and Silicon Valley fame for his bets on Facebook, PayPal and Palantir, served as an advocate for and advisor to President Donald Trump during his campaign and the transition process.

You may remember Thiel from his appearance onstage at the Republican National Convention in July. He has since orchestrated partnerships and meetings between Trump and the tech industry, most notably in a roundtable meeting at Trump Tower in New York shortly after Trump's election.  Read more...

UK regulator: White male bank culture is ‘difficult to take'

The financial industry’s “white male” culture isn’t changing quickly enough, according to the U.K. regulator’s head of supervision, who said the country is unlikely to see a female chief executive officer at a major bank for at least five years.

"It’s extremely rare that in my professional life I have a conversation with a head of desk at an investment bank or a global head of business that is anything other than a white male," the Financial Conduct Authority’s Megan Butler said at the City & Financial Global’s Women in Finance Summit in London. "I’ve increasingly come to find that a little bit difficult to take." Read more...

When it comes to the full English breakfast, bacon is queen

The full English breakfast is a cornerstone of British culture. This national treasure is composed of eggs, rashers (bacon), sausages, baked beans, hash browns, buttered toast, and fried mushrooms and tomato. However, not all parts of this greasy plate of goodness are created equal.

YouGov conducted a survey asking the public about which parts of the full English breakfast they would consider quintessential, and the results are completely un-shocking — bacon is queen.

Image: YOUGOV

89% of the population can't do a full English unless bacon is present and accounted for. The runner up is sausage with 82%. Meat is an obvious winner in the eyes (and stomachs) of the British public. Read more...

Good news, Google Home owners: the smart home hub can now talk to more gear.

Nerf's newest blasters shoot foam cars, not darts

Have you ever looked at your Nerf guns and wished they could shoot something other than foam darts? If you have, this is your lucky year.

Designed to cater to a younger crowd — 5 years old and up as opposed to Nerf's traditional 8 and up — the new Nerf Nitro series basically mixes the company's signature blasters with Hot Wheels.

Instead of foam darts, the blasters shoot foam cars, which can be launched right into obstacles and into the air off plastic ramps.

Available this summer, the Nitro series is an entire family of "stunt car blasters" running the gamut from the entry-level single-shot "Throttleshot Blitz" ($9.99) to the top-of-the-line, battery-powered and motorized "Motofury Rapid" ($49.99). Read more...

It's okay, guys, 'Deadpool' is still awesome without a Best Picture nomination

Fans of Deadpool, the foul-mouthed, ultra-violent comic book film starring the very, very handsome and irreverent Ryan Reynolds, let out a mournful grumble on Tuesday morning as the movie, despite all its accolades, failed to receive a Best Picture nomination for this year's Academy Awards.

Looking at what did get a nomination for Best Picture — critical darling La La Land, the history-delving Hidden Figures, gritty drama Hell or High Water — it's easy to understand why the blood-and-guts-and-dick-joke-filled Deadpool couldn't crack this elite group.  Read more...

Sundance hit 'Call Me By Your Name' will make you believe in love again

PARK CITY, Utah — Already garnering worthy comparisons to Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight, Sundance breakout hit Call Me By Your Name confidently differentiates itself from those towering works by posing one essential question: "Is it better to speak or die?"

Where those aforementioned films chose to be cautious, restrained by time and cultural expectations, Call Me By Your Name answers with full-throated passion, and it's all the more resonant for it.

Its composition is as poetic as Ang Lee's groundbreaking "gay cowboy" epic, and its humanity is as vibrant as Barry Jenkins' nuanced Oscar contender, but Call Me By Your Name defies easy categorizations. It's a coming-of-age tale, a love story, and a heartfelt mediation on intimacy and loss, all wrapped up in one lush, lyrical package. Read more...

Trump gives second life to Keystone XL, Dakota Access oil pipelines

The Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines will get a second shot under the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive action that may revive the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Former President Barack Obama rejected the U.S.-to-Canada project in late 2015 on the grounds that it would hurt U.S. efforts to tackle climate change.

The document clears the way for government approval of the proposed 1,179-mile pipeline from Canada's Alberta tar sands region to refineries in the U.S. Gulf Coast. Read more...

Donald Trump's favorite new picture gets even the simplest detail wrong

Donald Trump is very concerned with the truth and yet a new photo of his inauguration that he says will hang in the White House can't even get the easiest facts straight.

The day after doubling-down on his baseless, false claim that illegal votes cost him the popular election, Trump tweeted out the photo below, a panoramic shot of the inauguration crowd that he says he'll hang in either the press hall.

Job descriptions are getting really specific these days.

Tiniest feminist held up a very important sign at the Women's March

Armed with love, pink hats and clever signs, women across the globe marched in solidarity on Saturday to fight for the right to their bodies, minds and choices.

Jenny Sowry and her husband took their 22-month-old daughter and 9-year-old son to march and shared photos of the day on Facebook.

"The idea of not marching as a family never came up. I didn’t feel that there was any issue with safety", Sowry told Mashable. "The atmosphere was very family friendly."

"There were a number of causes championed that day, the concerns were wide and varied," Sowry said. "For my son, it was the idea that all people are equal and deserving of respect." Read more...

Streaming crashes the Oscars: Amazon becomes first service with Best Picture nod

"We want to win an Oscar."

That's what Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told a German newspaper in December 2015, in case you thought they were being subtle about it.

On Tuesday, Bezos' goal became an actual possibility after the streaming service's Sundance Film Festival 2016 pick-up Manchester by the Sea received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

The Salesman, an Iranian drama Amazon is distributing in the U.S., also gave Amazon a seventh nomination in the foreign-language film category.

Apple unveils its own way to find lost AirPods

Memo to app makers, steer clear of Apple's turf.

Just two weeks after not-so-quietly removing the Finder for AirPods app, which helped nervous AirPod owners locate their misplaced Bluetooth audio devices, Apple announced its own official Find My AirPods utility inside the already familiar Find My iPhone app.

The fact that Apple is making this app is significant, because it's the first time Apple's willing to freely admit that someone might actually misplace one of the just-released $159 wireless earbuds.

Delivered as part of OS 10.3 beta that started rolling out to developers on Tuesday, Find My AirPods, works similarly to the dearly departed third-party app. It relies on Bluetooth signals to help find your AirPods. However, since Apple can access the custom W11 Bluetooth chip it built, its solution goes further. Read more...

Women's March protestor seeks help on Facebook to find 'equality bae'

On Saturday, the streets of London were flooded with people marching to Trafalgar square in the name of women's rights and equality. It's not the likeliest place you'd expect to find love, but for one demonstrator it did spark a crush.

As the Trump era dawns, the media is doubling down on investigative journalism

When Spotlight won the Oscar for best picture in 2016, it had already sparked a degree of journalistic nostalgia, harkening back to an era before Twitter determined the media cycle (and did so at a breakneck pace). Yes, there was once a time when investigative teams were given the resources, time and space to shake the foundations of the world’s most powerful institutions.

Now, investigative teams are making a comeback thanks to a new muse: Donald Trump.

"[The administration] have said they're going to try to remake how Washington works, how government is, and we need to be in place to figure out where to go deep in terms of coverage across the board," said Mark Mazzetti, the new Washington investigations editor for the New York Times. Oscars 2017: It's a good time to be a nerd

Musical theater and jazz nerds across the nation were cheering Tuesday morning as the Oscar nominees were announced and the delightful throwback La La Land picked up a record-tying 14 nods.

Likewise, sci-fi nerds saluted the impressive 8 nominations for Arrival — a genre movie (based on a very nerdy short story by Seattle-based technical writer Ted Chiang) that has so thoroughly inserted itself into the mainstream that most people don't even recognize it as a genre movie.

But that was far from the only reason for excitement in the geek sectors of society. The nominations list was replete with more traditional genre movies, too.  Read more...

Night Shift is headed to the Mac to help you sleep better

Longtime Mac users know all about the wonders of f.lux, a third-party system preference that automatically adjusts your screen's color temperature, shifting it from blue to yellow throughout the day in order to combat the harmful effects of blue light.

With iOS 9.3, Apple added a feature called "Night Shift" that's essentially f.lux, but for your iPhone or iPad. The useful feature is now headed to the Mac.

The latest developer beta for macOS Sierra version 10.4.1 beta 1, includes a Night Shift mode. How it works is unclear (we're working on installing the new version), but we wouldn't be surprised if it works much like f.lux. Read more...
