Brands and their Facebook bots can now start conversations through ads

Facebook is making it easier than ever for brands to lure you into chatting with them.

The social network rolled out a new type of ad on Tuesday that lets advertisers with or without Messenger bots solicit messages through sponsored News Feed posts.

The posts look like any other ad on the site, but have a "send message" button in place of a link to an outside site.

Another iteration of the format lets brands run ads within a particular open conversation on the Messenger platform in an attempt to reconnect with users with whom they've talked before.  Read more...

Brands need to stop telling people to go vote

Who doesn't look to their favorite brand of sweatshirt for election day reminders?

That's what the gaggle of brands preaching to you online to get out and vote seem to think their relationship to your life is like.

Brands work hard to pretend to be your friends on social media. They'll respond to your tweets. They'll like your Instagram post. They've also made it their place to latch onto whatever timely news or memes you and the rest of the world are talking about, now.

But it's gone peak during this election, as so, so many brands have perfected the art of appearing to say something important without actually saying anything at all, as they all tell you to go vote. Don't buy the message. Read more...

Black market ceviche could mean jail for single mom

Share your favorite recipes on Facebook. But please don't sell the food without a permit. Even one bowl of your specialty could land you in jail.

That's the reality California resident and single mom of six Mariza Reulas is learning as she faces jail time for selling homemade ceviche through a Facebook group, reports Fox40.

Reulas was part of the 209 Food Spot Facebook group, where she says people in the Stockton, CA area traded recipes, planned potluck meals, and sold food to other members.

On Dec. 3, 2015, Reulas and "about a dozen others" in the Facebook group were cited with two misdemeanors (operating a food facility and engaging in business without a permit). They were part of a sting operation, according to court documents. Reulas' crime was selling the private investigator a $12 dish of ceviche.  Read more...

Trump just filed his first election lawsuit, ahead of schedule

UPDATE: Nov. 8, 2016, 2:05 p.m. EST Added Clark County statement.

Before the polls even opened Tuesday, Donald Trump filed his first election lawsuit.

Lawyers for the Republican presidential candidate on Monday night filed a lawsuit alleging Clark County, Nevada kept polling places open "two hours beyond the designated closing time" during early voting.

The polling places named in the suit are outside of Las Vegas and have a higher proportion of minority voters than the city, CNN reported

A lawsuit like this could delay some votes from being counted. Trump lawyers asked for the ballots in question not to be "co-mingled or interspersed" with other ballots, CNN said.  Read more...

The smog smothering India is so thick you can actually see it from space

The smog smothering millions in the Indian capital of New Delhi is so thick, it's plainly visible from space, showing up as a milky blanked covering northern India.

Visible satellite imagery posted by NASA's Worldview tool shows persistent smog across northern India since late October. This coincides with the advent of winter weather patterns that often bring more stagnant air masses to the region.

Pollution levels are so high, Indian authorities have shut schools and construction sites this week. The smog poses serious public health threats, including causing or aggravating heart disease, heightening cancer risks and elevating mortality among more vulnerable populations.  Read more...

Taylor Swift went to the polls and quietly revealed who she's voting for

Taylor Swift completed her civic duty by voting and she wants you to do the same.

While remaining silent about who she's voting for, unlike fellow-extremely-famous-people Beyoncé and Lady Gaga who publicly support Hillary Clinton, Swift simply encouraged her followers to "go out and VOTE."

Donald Trump says he's proud of child Tiffany 'to a lesser extent' than the others

It's Election Day, so Donald Trump only has a few more chances to let the nation know which of his children he likes the least.

Calling in to Fox & Friends, the Republican nominee spoke about how proud he is of his adult children. Most of them, at least.

"I'm very proud of my children. I mean, I'm just looking at them right now as an example... but I'm very proud 'cause Don and Eric and Ivanka and, you know, to a lesser extent 'cause she just got out of school, out of college, but, uh, Tiffany, who's also been so terrific. I mean, they work so hard."

Did Trump have to say he's less proud of Tiffany? Of course not. Would it be Election Day if he didn't? No. No it would not. Read more...

Election fatigue? Check out this new UN climate report and feel even worse.

Climate change may have been the sleeper issue of the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, but it's been a top issue on the global scene. That's why a new climate report, released on election day of all days, is so important.

The report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is designed to inform negotiators at the latest round of UN climate talks in Marrakech, Morocco.

It depicts a world that is warming at an accelerating rate, with the window for action closing fast before so much warming becomes locked into the climate system that irreversible impacts, such as runaway melting of continental ice sheets, become all but assured. Read more...

Polka dot omelettes are apparently a thing in Japan

Japan may be the master of cute food (and cute everything) but we're not sure this one's a sure hit.

According to Japanese blogs, polka dot omelettes have started to trend on social media such as Line and Twitter.

The spotty eggs are commonly made by separating the yolk and white before cooking, then frying up a thin layer of the yolk first.

As the yolk cooks, cut out circles with a cookie cutter, before pouring the egg white over it. The transparent egg white cooks into an opaque white layer filling up the holes, making the polka dots. Read more...

Donald Trump gets booed on his way to vote

Election Day ballot casting can be a big event for the candidates. Or it can turn in to a super awkward occasion.

That's the lesson we learned on Election Day when big crowds gathered to shower GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump with lusty boos as he went to cast his vote on Tuesday morning.

Trump and his wife, Melania, cast their ballots at PS 59 on the east side of Manhattan shortly after 10 a.m. local time.

There were no other incidents reported while the Trumps cast their ballots. Now they get to wait, like the rest of us, for the results to roll in. Read more...

Scottish goat with 'psychic' powers boldly predicts U.S. election result

Don't even worry about watching the U.S. election results roll in tonight; we already know the outcome, and it comes courtesy of a psychic Scottish goat named Boots.

OK, so the main basis for the goat being "psychic" seems to be that he's previously predicted the correct result for Brexit (which, if you want to be pedantic, was only a 50/50 decision) — but at the same time, that means his prediction record is 100% correct, so are we to argue?

In the clip above, Boots doesn't even hesitate; with a determination most pollsters would be awed by, he plods straight over to Hillary. Read more...

On Election Day 2016, the whole world is Winston Churchill

Contrary to what you might have seen many times on Facebook in recent days, Winston Churchill never actually said that America "always does the right thing, but only when it has exhausted all other options."

This misattributed quote seems to have originated in the US in the 1980s. It's a myth America has enjoyed telling about itself ever since. Hey, we've done some bad stuff, but things turn out for the best in the end, right? Just like in every TV show ever. Even the great British lion of democracy said so!

But he didn't. Churchill spent nearly two years fending off the Nazi menace alone, watching Britain's cities burn in the Blitz, hoping against hope that his American cousins would come to their senses. He was too frazzled for quips. Read more...

Hyperloop One's Dubai transport video is the sexiest thing you'll see all day

And Hyperloop One is selling that feasibility with sizzle.

The two-and-a-half-minute video the company launched as part of this announcement (and which it teased on Monday) reveals exactly how its proposed sub-supersonic, ground-based transportation system will work in Dubai and connecting locations. Assange says he isn't dropping emails to swing the U.S. election

Despite what a lot people believe, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said he didn't intend to influence the U.S. election when he leaked troves of private emails.

Assange has been publishing copies of thousands of emails from Hillary Clinton's camp during the final months of the election campaign, but claims he did it all for the good of the public.

"This is not due to a personal desire to influence the outcome of the election," Assange, who is hiding out in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, said in a statement. He said the organization publishes any information it receives that is in the public interest and that if he had information on Clinton's rival, Donald Trump, it would also be published.  Read more...
