Restaurant owner rips apart customer's negative TripAdvisor review

Of all the first world problems, waiting to be seated at a restaurant when you're really hungry is one of the worst. But you should probably expect it on a Saturday night.

However, Peter W, a hungry pizza-lover, had a very different expectation when he went to Rudy's Neapolitan Pizza in Manchester, England.

After arriving at the very busy restaurant, the expectant diner was told there was a two-hour wait and that there was no guarantee that he could be served.

Peter W grew frustrated, left and took it out on Rudy's in TripAdvisor.

8 red flags banks look for when giving out business loans

I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you regarding business loans

The good news is that institutional lenders’ loan approval rates have matched an all-time high at 62.8 percent and small banks have also slightly increased their approval rates.

As for the bad news, the big bank approval rate has dropped to just 23.1 percent. This means that less than a quarter of businesses applying for a loan will receive one.

There are number of outside factors that have influenced these decisions, such as a slowing in global market growth. There are also red flags that keep popping up — which banks keep a lookout for whenever a business applies for a loan.  Read more...

Watch one great dog absolutely dominate the #MannequinChallenge

It's been a glorious few weeks of watching countless of videos featuring people standing still, but before we put the #MannequinChallenge to rest, every dog must have its day.

We need to honor this dog who executed the best contribution to the bizarre trend.

"My dog has the best #mannequinchallange," user @Ryan_Thomas02 wrote, and it's hard to argue with that.

If you don't believe this video is better than the #MannequinChallenge attempts from Adele, an entire stadium or Paul McCartney, then watch it one more time and take a second to recognize and honor the greatness it takes for a dog to gently balance Doritos in its mouth (and head) without moving a damn centimeter.  Read more...

Watch a hydraulic press shatter a deck of cards in explosive slow motion

If there are two things the internet really can't get enough of, it's things happening in slow motion and random items being brutally crushed in a hydraulic press.

The video above — a Slow Mo Guys tribute to the Hydraulic Press Channel — captures the best of both worlds.

In the clip, the press slowly crunches the full deck with a force of up to 90,000 pounds. Suddenly, the cards shatter and break apart like glass.

At 28,500 frames per second, the result is pretty mesmerizing.

NASA discovers mysterious electron superhighway above Earth

Some electrons are speeding above Earth's surface at nearly the speed of light, and NASA isn't sure why.

According to a new study, the tiny, charged particles were found accelerating to high speeds in an unexpected part of space, farther from Earth than previously realized.

The region these fast electrons were found in, known as the foreshock, is the part of the solar system where charged particles streaming from the sun are thought to be reflected back from Earth's magnetic field toward the star.

Until now, however, scientists didn't think the region could speed up particles to the degree that was observed Read more...

New Yorkers rejoice no longer living in building with Trump's name on it

For once, Donald Trump's name was actually taken off of something.

On Wednesday, workers removed the name "Trump" from signage on a series of New York apartment buildings on Wednesday in hopes that people won't associate the building with the white-nationalist-hiring, KKK-endorsed president-elect.

The buildings, located at 140, 160 and 180 Riverside Boulevard on the west side of Manhattan, were developed by Trump's real estate company in the 1990s but were sold to Chicago-based Equity Residential in 2005, which kept the signage and name in place under a "use of name" agreement with the Trump Organization.   Read more...

Cam Newton wants to make the NFL fun again, and it should let him

Cam Newton just said what's been on the minds of football players and fans all season — the NFL should be fun.

The NFL has long been known as the No Fun League, but it's reached new heights this year as it has seemingly declared war on touchdown celebrations, limited social media activity and upheld its strict uniform policy. Any semblance of entertainment is being snatched from every corner of the game.

Newton's status as least year's MVP and one of the most popular, if not most combative, players in the league makes him somewhat of a chief spokesperson for the game.

On Tuesday, he said exactly what the league needs to hear. Read more...

7 'Rogue One' clues revealed by the prequel novel

Star Wars is meant to be escapism. But with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, out Dec. 16, we're in for a tale of rebels struggling against a galaxy-wide authoritarian regime — one that may reflect more of the present political environment than its creators expected.

The same is true of Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel (yep, Star Wars spin-off titles are getting pretty specific) by veteran Star Wars author James Luceno. The book, out this week, acts as a direct prequel to the movie. It isn't giving much away to say that the scene on the last page basically leads us into the earliest flashback sequence in the movie.    Read more...

Echo Fox is allowing its 'CS:GO' players to seek other teams

Denver passes new marijuana law that makes it legal to consume pot in businesses

Colorado was the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana (though Washington voted it in the same year), and now its capital city is pushing the bar once again.

Basically, cannabis consumers will no longer have to hide in their own home when they want to get high.

The people of Denver passed ballot initiative 300, which would let businesses apply for permits that would allow the consumption of marijuana within their premises.

According to the Denver Post the initiative will create a four-year pilot program whereby certain business could apply. However, applicants will need backing from a registered neighborhood group, such as a business improvement district. Those groups will be able to set up their own conditions for their support, such as limiting hours and other restrictions. Read more...

Now even Twitter is copying Snapchat

The social network added a new QR code feature to its apps Wednesday that allows you to follow other users by scanning QR codes linked to their profiles.

It works just like Snapchat's Snap Codes: pull up the new in-app camera to scan another user's code. This brings up a preview of their profile where you can opt to follow them.

The feature is somewhat hidden in the latest version of Twitter's iOS and Android apps. In both cases, you can find your code in your Settings. On iOS, you'll have to head to your profile, then the Settings menu and tap "QR Code." On Android, QR codes are under the "..." menu. Igloo Australia Iggy Azalea may have been LOL'ed out of America, but she's still a cleaning up back home. Now the rapper has proudly claimed what's rightfully hers. An "award-winning vagina."

The artist and X Factor Australia judge took GQ Australia's Woman of the Year Award Wednesday night, and used her speech as an opportunity to joke (you'd hope) about her genitals.

"Thank you so much. I didn't realise everyone was going to have such hilarious speeches and I didn't prepare anything this week. I just want to give a big thank you to GQ for this award." Read more...

Baby monkey finds a home on a bunch of goats, and yes it's very cute

There might be a wealth of adorable animals available at your fingertips on the internet, but this unlikely duo will eclipse all of the cute things.

A baby monkey has settled in with a bunch of goats in Tonggu County, located in the east of China. The goats' farmer, Zhong Shu, told CCTV that he found the monkey clinging to his herd on Saturday.

"The little monkey has been here for about four or five days. It seems the goats made it feel safe," Zhong told the news outlet.

"Every time I came to shut goats in the fold at night, I found the monkey was either on the back of this goat or that goat. I tried to feed bananas to the monkey, but it did not eat and held on to the goat tightly." Read more...

The 'You're The Worst' finale will emotionally destroy you

In Season 3 of You're The Worst, each week's figurative feelings gut-punch has somehow managed to hit as hard as the last.

And they hit differently: The show recognizes an uncomfortable truth in life, that struggles aren't universal. People experience love, life and pain in different ways and at different speeds, and in the last two episodes of Season 3, You're The Worst explores that deeply.

The first and most important through-line between episodes 12 and 13 consists of mini-montages of Edgar's cooking, which deserves its own webseries (that idea is free, FX).  Read more...

Advertisers want Facebook to stop 'grading its own homework'

Earlier this fall, the ad industry gathered in New York City for one of its biggest annual trade conferences. The topic on everyone’s mind: How do you fairly measure video views?

News that Facebook had long oversold a key metric in how it quantified video views had shocked marketers, and the social network had deployed some of its most prominent executives to do damage control.

But despite the mea culpas, there was a pervasive sense that a reckoning was only just beginning — not just for Facebook, but for all enclosed online platforms that ask advertisers to accept their proprietary numbers on the strength of their word alone. Read more...

More than 78,000 people have signed a petition to strip a New Zealand church of tax-free status after its leader blamed LGBTQ people for earthquakes.

On Monday, Brian Tamaki of Destiny Church in Auckland posted a sermon on Facebook that blamed sinners and gay people for natural disasters and murders generally.

New Zealand was shaken by a magnitude-7.8 earthquake Monday, but Tamaki claimed on Radiolive Thursday he made the remarks Sunday morning before he knew about the most recent disaster that left two people dead.

Hold onto your fairy bread, foodies. Chocolate cheese is a thing now.

Occasionally, you might find yourself craving something a little sweet and a little salty. But you probably wouldn't think chocolate-infused cheese could be the solution to that problem.

Dairy specialist Curds & Whey in Melbourne, Australia, is providing just that. The Italian blue cheese called Choco 21 has been ripened in a chocolate liqueur, then rubbed with cocoa and decorated with chocolate chips. And while it sounds a bit suspect, the foodies are loving it.

The challenging creation has managed to sell out.

Aboriginal sports star crosses the globe to stand with Standing Rock

He visited the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota just as Donald Trump was announced as U.S. president-elect, where he stood as just another person trying to protect sacred water.

Opponents of the cross-state Dakota Access Pipeline Project took to streets across the world, including Australia to protest on Tuesday.

Williams decided to join the 2000-strong congregation of Sioux people and their allies at Standing Rock, because he sees many commonalities between the culture and concerns of First Nations people around the planet. Read more...

The crazy reason phones in Japan are required to be waterproof

SEOUL — Waterproof phones may be all the rage now, but people in Japan have been used to their devices being able to take a swim for over a decade already.

Users in the country got used to having smartphones years before Western counterparts. Manufacturers had to make phones waterproof because Japanese women were so attached to their phones they brought them into shower.

As a result, nearly every phone in for the Japanese market has been made waterproof, to meet standard expectations.

Don't ever tell me 'Harry Potter' is just for kids. You're wrong, and I can prove it.

LONDON — If I catch you saying the Harry Potter books are just "for kids," I will come for you.

I don't mean in a violent way or anything — I'm not some kind of Harry Potter-crazed maniac vigilante — but at the very least we will have a mildly heated discussion about whether J.K. Rowling's delightful wizarding series constitutes "children's literature."

Anyway, to save myself having to waffle embarrassingly on whenever this situation arises — which is more often than you might think; it turns out a surprising number of people who like reading still haven't the Harry Potter books, and plenty point-black refuse to — I thought I'd write down all my arguments in one place here. iPhone camera might get AR features, report says

While Apple has been slow to adopt virtual reality in its gadgets (the company has virtually nothing on that front so far), there's a chance that the company might at least jump on the augmented reality bandwagon.

Business Insider, quoting a person familiar with the matter, says Apple plans to build AR features into the iPhone's camera app.

To achieve this, Apple is reportedly working with several AR startups, as well as teams from AR/VR companies Metaio and Flyby Media which it had acquired in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

In terms of features, this could mean pointing your phone's camera to an object in the real world and have it recognized — a feature that sounds similar to the one offered by AR startup Blippar. Another possible feature would be face recognition and manipulation; similar features can be seen today on Snapchat and Facebook-acquired MasqueradeRead more...

Watch this eye-popping visualization of how we shop online for Black Friday

When the time comes for Black Friday shopping, there are two schools of thought.

School A is the classic approach: camping out in a line for hours and joining the mad rush to the doors for the battle to claim the best in-house deals of the season the moment the store opens.

School B is more modern (and civilized): going online from literally anywhere (pants optional) and finishing off the whole holiday checklist with just a few clicks or taps on whichever device strikes a shopper's fancy.

School B, with its convenience and modernity, is the more popular method (just barely). Last year, a Black Friday consumer survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics for the National Retailers Federation (NRF) found that online holiday shopping was favored by 42 percent of American adults.  Read more...

Facebook creates Community Help tool so users can aid each other after disasters

Facebook just made it a lot easier for users to find and give help in the wake of crises and disasters.

The social media company has created Community Help, a new tool tied to the Safety Check feature that lets users ask for and offer help after marking themselves safe during a crisis. Facebook announced the tool at its first Social Good Forum in New York on Thursday.

The tool, which will be tested in December and officially launch in January 2017, will pop up after a user activates Safety Check. Once you mark yourself as safe, Facebook will lead you to a page that shows others' safety statuses, as well as posts from people offering and looking for help in the area. Read more...

Facebook's Safety Check feature now rests solely in the hands of its users

Facebook users no longer need to rely on the social network to activate its main crisis response tool.

If enough people are posting about an incident in a given area (using the keyword "earthquake," for example), Facebook will automatically notify those users and ask if they're OK. A user can mark themselves as safe, and then prompt friends to do the same, instead of Facebook sending notifications to everyone in that city or region.  Read more...

Now, enter C-SPAN, which has set up a livestream of the lobby. It's not necessarily always exciting (as per C-SPAN norms). But just this morning, Rudy Giuliani strolled in.

Even better than the moments of excitement are the quiet times. The lobby often maintains a quiet murmur that's occasionally interrupted by the snapping of cameras and questions lobbed by reporters.  Read more...

James Corden challenges Kendall Jenner to eat vile food or tell the truth

Would you rather dish on who you hated in Taylor Swift's squad or drink a glass of bird saliva?

In a disgusting game of "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts," James Corden forces Kendall Jenner to make that decision. They each draw pretty intense questions from a stack and face off around a table of nauseating delicacies.  If they refuse to answer, they must drink or eat one of the many vile concoctions presented on the spinning—like fish eyes, cod sperm and some good ol' bull penis.

It's a hilarious and stomach-churning to see what the two refuses to air out on the show. Watch above to see what repulsive dish Jenner has to stomach in exchange for keeping quiet about why her sister cancelled an appearance on The Late Late ShowRead more...

Lonely, musical dude uses washing machine as his backup band

Buh-dum. Buh-dum. Buh-dum.

When a washing machine creates the perfect beat for a hoedown tune, what's a lonely dude to do?

For YouTuber Aaron James McAvoy, who says he "could really use a wife sometimes," the answer is film himself singing a made up hoedown tune.

Aaron, you don't need a wife. You need to make an extended version of this song.

The internet is puzzled over how to rescue these doomed plates

Well, this was certainly a conundrum.

The internet frantically tried to rescue a set of precariously placed plates after Facebook user Tseng Shao-Tsen posted a photo of them to a Taiwanese community page on Sunday.

"This is a cupboard that can never be opened," he wrote.

Yeah, it did seem like a difficult task.

Still, futility didn't stop Facebook commenters from making suggestions. Several people proposed laying out a quilt or pillows to cushion the plates' inevitable fall, for example.

Others suggested turning the cupboard carefully on its side, then removing the plates. Still others thought drilling a hole in the glass was the best way to go. Read more...

Can 'free speech' be 'moderated'? Yes.

Editor's note: This essay was originally published in on July 19, 2016 on Medium. It has been republished here in light of recent and somewhat related events.

Can what we call free speech be moderated when expressed on today’s globally connected communication platforms, and do so without limiting the very openness and freedom that these platforms provide? Yes. Really.

In this post I wanted to share my personal thoughts and experience on this important topic.

From the earliest days of the “net”, meaning going back to the original online newsgroups and subsequently dial-up, the presence of trolling has been a constant and unrelenting force of ill-will and bad taste. In the early days of online forums, some community members would post deliberately provocative comments or posts simply to get a rise out of other members. Within a very short time, such trolling would be met by an increasingly vitriolic exchange of hyperbolic insults. These insults would too often degrade into racial, ethnic, geographic, or other slurs. Read more...

How the tech world's immaturity handed Trump the election

Too little, too late, Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for nothing, Wikileaks.

In the wake of Donald Trump's shock election, there's been a reckoning over the role of social media enabling the spread of fake news and abusive behavior that disproportionately helped the GOP candidate. But it took nearly a week before that outrage reached the ears of the men responsible.

Like children sullenly admitting they are at fault, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have taken belated action in the last few days—shutting off fake news sites' access to their ad network and banning a bunch of racist alt-right accounts respectively.  Read more...

World's largest LEGO store joins London's Leicester Square attractions

LONDON — The world's largest LEGO Store has arrived in London's Leicester Square.

And in case you'd forgotten which city it's in, the store has included some truly impressive themed LEGO models of the Tube, Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben, and a red telephone box to remind you.

Spanning two floors, the 914-square-metre London flagship store has been in development for two years and features a model of an Underground carriage that took 4,000 hours to make.

Yup, that's a historically inaccurate Lego version of playwright William Shakespeare on the Tube.

Incredible 9-year-old nails Michael Jackson's moves at a talent show

The moonwalk is no easy feat, unless you're an amazing dancer and obsessed with Michael Jackson.

This 9-year-old kid stole his local talent show when he danced it out to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." He mastered many of Jacksons's iconic dance moves: tipping his hat, dancing on his toes and of course, the moonwalk. He even dressed up like the king of pop, though his glove might be just a tad too big for the wee dancing machine.

It doesn't matter— this kid killed it.

Did a fake news writer hand Trump the White House?

While the wave of real stories surrounding the role of hoax news stories on social media in the recent presidential election have included stunning revelations, none are as insane as the claims one of the most prolific hoaxers made in a chat with the Washington Post.

The Post talked with Paul Horner, who's been spinning fake stories for years with success (like "Yelp sues South Park") on sites that masquerade as mainstream media outlets but always have a tell: A short two-letter code at the end of the url (example: "Obama bans national anthem at sporting events" from cnn.com.de).  Read more...

Shirtless hero risks life to save a dog that fell through a pond's thin ice

An unnamed Russian man saved the day after a dog fell through the ice into a freezing pond and was unable to escape.

Alexander Levashov came upon the scene and started filming the freezing canine while he waited for emergency crews to arrive, when suddenly a shirtless man started running towards the dog.

The man laid down on the ice and tried to grab the pup. Unfortunately, the dog was scared and tried to bite the man, but the shirtless hero wasn't going to give up so easy. After a good bite to the hand, the man was able to grab the scruff of the dog's neck and yank it to safety.

Clearly the man was pretty happy with the outcome, even though he did suffer a dog bite to the hand.  Read more...

The House GOP just took the whitest selfie ever

A closed-door meeting between Vice President-elect Mike Pence and GOP members of the House of Representatives concluded with the whitest selfie ever (at least since the last GOP selfie).

Black Friday loses steam, but crowds should still be gigantic

Amazon has transformed the traditional Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals into a two-month-long ordeal in an effort to drive more online sales. But shoppers are still expected to head out in droves this year post-Turkey Day.

That said, foot traffic to brick and mortar sales shops on Black Friday is expected to decrease by 3.5 percent compared to last year, according to Foursquare, the check-in app turned location intelligence company.

While the traffic is down, it is far less extreme than the double-digit drop Foursquare's data estimates the holiday faced from 2014 to 2015.  Read more...

Trump's Twitter bots turned out on Election Day

Donald Trump’s supporters made a surprisingly strong showing on Nov. 8, and not just at polling places in the rust belt. Twitter bots accounted for nearly a quarter of all postings that included hashtags related to the election, according to an analysis by researchers at Corvinus University, Oxford, and the University of Washington published on Thursday. They found that pro-Trump hashtags got five times as much traffic from automated accounts as hashtags that were pro-Hillary Clinton.

“The use of automated accounts was deliberate and strategic throughout the election, most clearly with pro-Trump campaigners and programmers who carefully adjusted the timing of content production during the debates, strategically colonized pro-Clinton hashtags, and then disabled automated activities after election day,” the researchers wrote.   Read more...

Inmates at an Alabama prison made their own #MannequinChallenge

Everyone is doing the #MannequinChallenge nowadays — including the residents of one Alabama prison.

Cal Lilcal Jackson posted a video to Facebook Nov. 13 of inmates at an Alabama prison performing the challenge.

That usually entails people standing perfectly still doing various activities while the camera operator pans around them. In this particular one, the inmates mimicked the activities of their daily lives: praying, working out, fighting and reading. One even bothers to point a middle finger in the air.

The video was captioned, "Free us.....prison reform. .....#ALLlivesMATTER #GodLovesAll #ChaingangChallange Free My Family!!!! #share help this go viral." Read more...

Google's new drawing game is fun even if you can't draw

Back in the Stone Age, before we were all completely plugged in and focused on our gadgets at all times (you know, like, 2002), people would get ... bored.

Of course, everyone still finds themselves bogged down by dull moments throughout the day, even with the brightly-lit screens of their devices jockeying for attention.

Google, one of the biggest boredom fighters known to man, just dropped a brand new distraction to keep us all occupied. And it's based on one of the all-time classic time-killing activities: doodling.

How to improve your Facebook feed, so we see the next Trump coming

What would've happened if America had seen this coming?

For a large mass of the world, the election of Donald Trump was unfathomable mere hours before it happened. Helping that along were a slew of polls along with nonstop commentary—from experts, entertainers and laymen—indicating Hillary Clinton as a superior candidate, on course for a cake-walk of a win.

They were wrong, to an almost universal degree. And the fact that so few could anticipate Trump's victory calls into question how America gets our information—what were we missing, and why?

It's a question that inevitably leads us to Facebook. Read more...

This supposedly 'secret' iPhone flaw is actually a feature

For the most part, iPhones are pretty secureiMessages are encrypted end-to-end and Apple can't read them.

A new report from The Intercept, however, claims your iPhone's call history is being "secretly" sent to Apple and saved to iCloud for up to four months.

It's a mighty scary-sounding report, but there's really nothing to worry about. Here's why.

First, let's break down the report.

According to research from Russian digital forensics company ElcomSoft, "calls made and received on an iOS device, complete with phone numbers, dates and times, and duration" and "missed and bypassed calls" are uploaded to iCloud and stored for up to four months. Read more...

Ballet dancers make Mexico City their stage in stunning photo series

At the start of his campaign, President-elect Donald Trump insisted that "when Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best."

Those words, along with many other comments about the people of Mexico and minorities around the world, have shocked many.

They've also inspired one man to set out and capture the beauty of Mexico and its people on camera.

New York-based photographer Omar Robles embarked on a 13-day excursion to Mexico City in October, inspired by Trump's words and aiming to shine a more positive light on the country. Working in partnership with FujiFilm he connected with powerful and talented local dancers across the city, a follow up to his beautiful portraits in Cuba earlier this year. Read more...

Brendan Dassey from 'Making a Murderer' won't go free Friday

Earlier this week it looked like Brendan Dassey would be back with his family in time for Thanksgiving, but the nephew of Steven Avery from the Netflix series Making a Murderer will remain in prison after a last-minute appeal.

A three-judge panel from a federal appeals court on Thursday blocked Dassey's scheduled early release at the request of the state of Wisconsin, which filed an emergency appeal. Dassey was set to be released by Friday after a lower-court judge ruled he had been coerced into confessing he had helped Avery murder a woman when he was 16.
