Amazon Alexa is just as nervous about the election as you

Amazon Alexa, the voice assistant that lives in various Echo hardware is, apparently, now a bit of a political junkie, obsessively tracking the presidential election returns just like you.

Election results are, in truth, just another in a long line of Alexa skills Amazon adds to  its artificial intelligence platform almost every day.

According to Amazon, which announced the update on, naturally, Election Day, Alexa is watching who won which states, which candidate is in the lead and, most importantly, current electoral vote counts. Read more...

Couple married for 37 years doesn't agree about who should win the election

People in a 37-year-long marriage probably know a thing or two about putting their differences aside.

And so, when a reporter asks this couple, "Aren't you excited for the first female president?" the differences in their answers do not shock one another.

While the woman shouts, "No!" in response to the reporter's question, her husband has a different reply. "I am," he adds, as the newscaster lifts his arms in confusion.

No matter what the outcome of tonight's election is, here's hoping this couple makes it through. Read more...

WWII tale of 'Operation Mincemeat' still surprises

At the height of WWII, Major William Martin of the British Royal Marines did an extraordinary service for the Allied Powers.

The thing is, Major William Martin never existed.

However Glyndwr Michael, who died alone and penniless on the streets of London, did exist. Following his death, his body was transported out of England and used in a remarkable ploy to trick the Axis forces.

Alongside fake documents suggesting England's intent to attack Greece, the dead man's corpse was laden with false clues to make the enemy believe the body was actually that of the nonexistent Major Martin.  Read more...

America, we need to fix those voting machines ASAP

As expected, episodes of faulty voting machines have been reported across several U.S. states on Election Day.

While break downs are common during elections and often lead to longer-than-expected waits, Twitter has been flooded with complaints from all across the country.

Most concerning are the updates coming out of battleground states like North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Ohio, which all had several cases of broken electoral machines.

David Becker, the executive director and co-founder of the Center for Election Innovation & Research, said that every precinct should have a secure box in which to deposit ballots that can be scanned later if a machine is broken. Warm records blew cold records away by the thousands last month

In recent years, climate scientists have noticed a growing imbalance in the ratio of warm temperature records to cold records in the U.S., with warm records being set more frequently.

But even with this trend, October 2016 stands out as being particularly unusual.

Last month, the lower 48 states recorded 7,025 warm temperature records (record daytime highs and record warm nighttime temperatures), but just 508 record cold temperatures (including record cold daytime temperatures and record lows).

That's a greater than 10-to-1 ratio in favor of warm records.  Read more...

Airline makes a sarcastic dig at Trump on Election Day

"Just in case he wins... Travel to the U.S. while you're still allowed to!"

That was the advice on a Royal Jordanian airlines advert Tuesday as Donald Trump went head to head with Hillary Clinton for the presidency.

The ad, which was tweeted with emoji of an orange and a a no entry sign by Jordan's flagship carrier, was a reference to Trump's rhetoric regarding Muslims and immigrants in the U.S. Some 93% of the population of Jordan is Muslim.

The ad also highlighted some of the carrier's fares to Chicago, Detroit and New York.

Trump's website had a glitch that would make it say whatever you'd like

Confused senator congratulates Kate McKinnon instead of Hillary Clinton

Kate McKinnon's impression of Hillary Clinton is good — some say, too good.

At Hillary Clinton's election night party at the Javits Center, Senator Chuck Schumer might have gotten momentarily confused. Instead of congratulating the actual candidate, he thanked the Saturday Night Live Star.

The senator tweeted out his possible mistake on election night, giving some comic relief to a stressful night for Americans.

The resemblance is close, but it's McKinnon's impression that really seals the deal.

Tammy Duckworth keeps smashing glass ceilings

Rep. Tammy Duckworth is shattering glass ceilings of her own.

The Illinois Democrat became the first U.S. female senator to have seen combat to serve in the U.S. Senate after winning Tuesday's race against her Republican opponent, Sen. Mark Kirk.

Duckworth will also be only the second Asian-American female senator.

Her victory over Kirk restores a seat to Democrats that was once held by President Barack Obama. The president joined Duckworth at an October rally in Chicago, saying he could "not think of a better person to represent this state that I love."  Read more...

Almost no one was ready for this photo of Donald Trump's election results party

Donald Trump gathered family and friends together Tuesday night to do two things: watch the election results roll in and take a nearly-universally unflattering photo.

Frankly, it appears as though no one but Mike Pence was ready for this picture. Was it perhaps taken on Mike Pence's phone, thus allowing him creative control over which shot to post?

No one even knows if it's a smiling pic or a serious pic. What gives?

Global markets are freaking out right now, because Trump

Donald Trump's surge in the U.S. election on Tuesday night sent markets around the world spinning sharply downward.

Trump's position on global trade — primarily, that the U.S. should do less of it — has caused concern about what that'd mean for a global economy that's been in a state of sluggish growth.

As Trump surged in Tuesday night's election returns, the markets tanked. Like this:

Dow Futures: Investors were preparing for a significant decline in U.S stocks at the mere idea of Trump being elected. Dow Jones futures went down as much as 700 points, as of 10:28 PM EST.

The Peso: The Mexican currency dropped sharply, on fears that a Trump presidency will hammer the economy, particularly if the U.S. withdraws from major trade agreements. Read more...

WTF is up with 'New York Magazine's' electoral map made of naked people

The 2016 presidential election is clearly pushing people to their breaking points.

The painful journey will (hopefully) end in a matter of hours, but until then, we must sit back, freak out and deal with a slew of outrageous stunts from media outlets.

We've already seen CNN take over the damn Empire State Building by projecting election results onto the building while livestreaming it on Facebook.

How do you top that? Nudity, of course.

New York Magazine has decided that the best way to keep people's attention during this excruciatingly long process is to livestream the electoral map being painted on naked people.  Read more...

Why women voters wore white to the polls

Some powerful women went to the polls dressed in white Tuesday, but their outfit choices were not a coincidence.

Although wearing white to vote has been co-opted by Hillary Clinton supporters, it's been a tradition dating back to the suffragettes in the early 1900s. The activists were known for wearing white in their campaign to bring voting rights to women.

This election feels like 2000...but so, so much worse, because of social media

The 2000 election was patently exhausting. And not just because it went all night, and then another month, but because it was so close, and came down to one state. But in an emotional development that went unappreciated at the time, the anxious energy was contained to TV screens, frantic phone calls, and newspaper front pages.

Sixteen years later we have social media, smartphone push notifications, constantly updated online predictions, and non-stop cable news broadcasts equipped with high-tech charts and graphics amplifying everything. India scraps Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes overnight to tackle corruption, terrorism funding

India discontinued its biggest denomination currency notes overnight in what is being seen as its biggest attempt to curb black money flow, corruption, counterfeiting and terrorism financing.

In a surprise announcement last evening, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations will carry no value starting Wednesday. The government said it will shortly introduce new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes.

This means that these notes will not be acceptable for transactions from midnight onwards. Good luck, America: You just elected Donald Trump president

The victory, sealed with a concession phone call from Clinton early Wednesday, amounts to one of the most stunning upsets in political history.

Trump’s margin of his victory in rural and suburban counties overwhelmed Clinton’s advantages among more educated, diverse and urban supporters, carrying him to a narrow win. You can now buy a refurbished iPhone 6S or 6S plus directly from Apple

Looking for an iPhone 6S on the cheap? You can now get a deal directly from Apple — if you don't mind buying a refurbished device.

9to5Mac reported Tuesday that Apple has started selling refurbished versions of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus at its online store

The company previously sold Macs, iPads and other devices on its online store, but refurbished iPhones were mostly offered on eBay or offloaded to third-party resellers.

For example, you can get a refurbished iPhone 6S with 16GB of storage memory for $449 (an $80 discount); the version with 64GB of memory goes for $589 (a $110 discount). J.K. Rowling keeps her cool during election, calmly destroys Twitter trolls

LONDON — J.K. Rowling has been incredibly vocal throughout the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, and the night of the election was no exception.

As a Trump win becoming more and more of a reality — and was eventually confirmed — Rowling kept herself busy on Twitter in two ways: comforting worried fans, and casually annihilating any troll who made the bad mistake of crossing her.

It started when she posted the following tweet, shortly before polls began to close.

How India is coping with most of its cash becoming useless

Indians woke up to the surprise announcement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the withdrawal of bigger denomination currency notes. As they begin to come to term with the adjustment, things are not looking easy for many.

In an address to the nation late evening yesterday, Modi announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination currency notes won't be a legal tender starting Wednesday. The two denotations amount for more than two-thirds by value of all cash circulation in India (it amounted for over 80 percent in 2014-15, according to Reserve Bank of India).

Americans wonder if they'll need Chinese lessons soon

As U.S. voters witnessed Donald Trump becoming their next president, many also realised that they might have to start taking Chinese lessons soon.

While Trump has thrown a plethora of accusations at the Asian nation, from saying it's made up global warming, or that it's stealing American jobs, many have said Trump as president would give China more power in Asia.

The moment Trump fans learned the Donald had won

NEW YORK CITY — It was a last hurrah for Donald Trump fans in his home state of New York. A hundred, maybe two hundred were grouped together in a small pen across and down the street from where their candidate, the Republican nominee for president, was holding his election night gathering.

They were just hoping to see him, really. They'd get to cheer him on one last time as the campaign faded into memory.  "USA, USA," was arguably their favorite chant early on. Sometimes they simply shouted their candidate's name.

But their phones told the same story as the rest of ours, and, after their candidate was still alive two hours past the first poll closings, the crowd got a bit louder. Everyone seemed to be smiling at each other. Lots of folks refreshed their phones, eyes wide with possibility. Did you see Florida? Have they called North Carolina yet?  Read more...

Hot guy lives his dream by traveling the world to eat pizza

Pizza is an all-around amazing food. It's delicious, filling, convenient and affordable. But how can one take a pizza obsession to the next level?

For Phil Duncan, a Liverpool, England, native and a Seattle, Washington, resident, it's by traveling the world to try as many pizza slices as possible.

"At the same time Instagram was getting big, I was traveling a lot more often on longer trips. So automatically I would upload general travel pics," Duncan wrote to Mashable. "I noticed that my friends were liking my pizza photos a lot more than just general pics as they knew my love for pizza. So I just continued to showcase all the pizza I was eating in all the countries I have been to." Read more...

Muslim women are scared to wear the hijab in public after Trump win

LONDON — The world has woken up to the news that Donald Trump has been elected president of the United States.

While many are celebrating Trump's victory right now, some Muslim women are expressing fear that they may be targeted by hate crime.

Many have taken to social media to warn Muslim women not to wear the hijab, niqab or burka in public, citing the 41 percent rise in race and religious hate crimes following the Brexit referendum on European Union membership.  Read more...

Chris O'Dowd joins Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba in Aaron Sorkin's 'Molly's Game'

Is it any surprise that Aaron Sorkin has been assembling an impressive cast for his directorial debut, Molly's Game? The Oscar-winning writer is a talent magnet who has attracted two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain in the titular role of poker princess Molly Bloom. And now he has four more solid actors along for the ride, as Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), Jeremy Strong (The Big Short) Bill Camp (The Night Of) and Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves) have joined the ensemble, Mashable has exclusively learned.

Set in the world of high-stakes poker, the film is based on Bloom's memoir, which Sorkin adapted himself. 10 smart money tips that take 10 minutes

Whatever your financial goals — from building a nest egg to flying the coop for a dream vacation — you’re only 10 minutes away from being a step closer. Here are 10 quick ways to get your personal finances in order.

1. Bump up your 401(k) contribution

Contributing just 1% more of your paycheck toward a 401(k) will add thousands to your retirement savings. Want to squirrel away money even faster? If your employer matches contributions, increase yours to the maximum amount it will kick in. Otherwise, you’re leaving free money on the table.

2. Start an emergency fund

The median American household has less than a month’s worth of income in liquid savings, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts. That’s a scary position to be in if financial disaster strikes, such as a major medical problem not covered by health insurance. Read more...

Despite mixed reactions, new MacBook Pro is selling like crazy

Apple's MacBook Pro launch in October inspired more criticism than any Mac event in recent history. The new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros, while thinner and more powerful than ever before and equipped with the brand new Touch Bar, are significantly more expensive than the older models. They also don't come with a 32GB option. And all connectors have been replaced with USB-C ports, plunging users into dongle hell, which Apple quickly tried to remedy by reducing the prices of its dongles and accessories.

Despite all that, it appears that the new MacBook Pro is selling very well, and has already outsold all of its Windows-based competitors by a large margin.  Read more...

Trump once said the very thing that elected him was a 'disaster for democracy'

Back in 2012, President-elect Donald Trump railed against the one institution that won him the U.S. election last night: the Electoral College.

As results continued to roll in following the vote, Hillary Clinton passed Trump for control of the popular vote.

"As of 10 a.m. ET, Clinton had amassed 59,299,381 votes nationally, to Trump's 59,135,740 — a margin of 163,641 that puts Clinton on track to become the fifth U.S. presidential candidate to win the popular vote but lose the election," according to NPR.

Donald Trump shocked the world on Tuesday night, besting Hillary Clinton and becoming the United States President-Elect on a night many thought he couldn't.

Is the internet spoiling 'Game of Thrones' Season 7?

Now that HBO's Game of Thrones has outpaced the George R. R. Martin novels on which it is based, readers and TV viewers are finally on a level playing field, with all of us equally oblivious to the plot twists ahead in Season 7 (and, if we're lucky, maybe even Season 8, which is set to be the fantasy saga's last).

Of course, because we can't have nice things when it comes to the internet, rumor has it that great swaths of plot details about Season 7 have leaked online, with enterprising fans on Reddit trying to piece together the storyline for next season.

It all originated with an anonymous Redditor going by the name awayforthelads, who has since deleted their account. Awayforthelads offered up detailed descriptions of purported scenes and character interactions, some of which have been supported by paparazzi shots taken during filming on location in Europe for Season 7.  Read more...

Watch Clinton's powerful, gracious concession speech

Hillary Clinton took the stage at the New Yorker Hotel Wednesday to deliver a succinct, powerful and incredibly gracious concession speech.

Acknowledging that she had lost the presidential race to Donald Trump, she used her words to thank her team, insist that the country follow a peaceful transition of power, and urge her followers to continue fighting for their values.

The highest glass ceiling has not yet been smashed but it will one day soon, she insisted, and she encouraged young girls watching to believe in themselves.

You don't have to organize today. You can just grieve.

Well, it happened.

The thing that millions of people of color, undocumented workers, Muslims, queer people, allies and apparently just 43 percent of white women were terrified of just came true: Donald Trump is America's next president.

It's impossible for many of to us to imagine what to do on a day like today. Parents are struggling to tell their children, teachers are scrambling to break the truth to their classes and others are wondering if they'll even have a home in their country anymore. And while there have been fierce calls to organize on Facebook, to protest more, to fight smarter and harder and better, to do it differently this time, to reach out to that racist cousin and speak calmly with that sexist uncle, no one should be forced to advocate.    Read more...

Thanks NASA! We've never needed livestreaming space views like we do today

If you need a little diversion from your post-election news hangover, NASA has you covered.

The space agency is currently streaming live views from the International Space Station on Facebook, showing the blue, green and brown beauty of Earth from above.

As of 12:30 p.m. ET, about 16,000 people were watching the live feed, streamed from NASA's International Space Station account.

The Facebook Live comes after a series of fake "live" streams from space started popping up on the social media platform on Oct. 26.

NASA's feed is from a high-definition camera positioned on the outside of the Space Station which continually beams down views of Earth. That feed is constantly streamed online thanks to NASA.  Read more...

Apple quietly launches Support App for iPhone and iPad users

Apple's App Store has offered nearly every mobile software tool you can think of, except, oddly, for an official Apple Support app. That is, until now.

Apple's new Support app quietly made its debut on Tuesday in the App Store, in the Utilities category.

Although the app is presented in English, as of this writing it's only available on the Netherlands Apple App Store and doesn't show up in searches in the U.S. store.

Image: apple

Accompanying the app is the following description:

Among the features listed in the app is an option to look up Apple support documents based on the Apple devices you own, as well as what looks like the ability to set a Genius Bar appointment at a brick and mortar Apple Store.  Read more...

Trump is the first president-elect not to say 'God bless America' since 1984

President-elect Donald Trump made all kinds of headlines on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, when he won the 2016 presidential election. But he made a bit of relatively unnoticed history, too.

In addition to turning polls on their heads, Trump became the first newly elected president to not end his victory speech with "God bless America" or "God bless the United States" since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Reagan did end that speech by saying "God bless you." But in 1980, he simply said, "Thanks very much."

Here are brief excerpts from the ends of those speeches, and accompanying videos where they're readily available.  Read more...

NBA player reminds people why running from a Trump presidency is a bad idea

As the reality of a Donald Trump presidency sinks in, many folks are making frantic plans to flee it.

Canada's immigration website crashed as news of Donald Trump's victory arrived, and a surge of Californians are calling for their state's succession online.

But NBA player Metta World Peace reminded all of those Trump fearers that running from problems won't solve them.

The Los Angeles Lakers small forward, who in 2011 legally changed his name from Ron Artest, gave them a pep talk on Wednesday morning, calling on Americans to stay and help fix the issues they're trying to escape.  Read more...

Donald Trump will be the only climate-denying world leader

If a Donald J. Trump administration acts on the president-elect's view that global warming's a "hoax," the consequences of the presidential election may echo for generations. When he's sworn into office in January, Trump becomes the only leader of a major industrialized country to deny the existence of human-caused global warming.

This is a first for the U.S., considering that even former president George H.W. Bush signed a climate change agreement in 1992, when the issue was just emerging. Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all pursued reductions to emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Read more...

Joe Biden gave President Obama a hug and now the internet wants one, too

Joe Biden: a must-have for any difficult public appearance.

On Wednesday morning, President Obama stood in the Rose Garden to deliver a statement on the election results and pledge a peaceful transition of power and reassure disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters.

"I've lost elections before," he said. "Joe hasn't, but you know."

That's when Biden came through with a trademark Biden side hug. "You beat me badly," he corrected, referring to his own ill-fated presidential campaign in 2008.

And now, transfixed by Biden's ability to be light-hearted in any scenario, a weary internet wants a side hug, too. Read more...

Americans are suddenly finding 'Rogue One' a lot more relevant

Rogue One is about a group of rebel spies intent on putting a stop to the destructive plans of the fascist Galactic Empire.

For whatever reason, lots of people on the internet are bringing it up today.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, because Rogue One is coming out roughly one month from now, right?

Or, you know, there could be something else that happened recently that's making people think of it. Who knows.

Can't wait for Rogue One to show a woman, a Latino, 3 asian men, & a black man fighting for freedom against an oppressive white man & win.

The election results have people calling for a real Dumbledore's Army

When a fictitious world of wizards was threatened by a rising force of a darkness and a government that ignored his threat, Harry Potter and his friends did the only thing they could do: They kept fighting for what they believed in.

For many Americans, the 2016 election looked eerily similar to Harry's fight against Voldemort, so now Harry Potter fans on Twitter are calling for Dumbledore's Army and the Order of the Phoenix to come to life.

Harry and his fellow students started the underground society of Dumbledore's Army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to learn defensive magic and be prepared for Voldemort's return. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when Death Eaters take over Hogwarts, the remaining members are punished for graffiti reading, "Dumbledore's Army: still recruiting." Read more...

Nearly half of Americans didn't vote — not even for Harambe

Donald Trump is the president-elect for the United States, and we're still just now starting to understand how he won.

The narratives are already flying, but it's important to look at the numbers. Nearly half of eligible voters (231,556,622 people) did not vote in the 2016 presidential election, according to data of early turnout rates compiled by the United States Election Project and crunched by Josh Nelson. The full results may not be available until two weeks.

The early data found that of the U.S. population:

  • 46.6% didn't vote

  • 25.6% voted for Hillary Clinton

  • 25.5% voted for Donald Trump

  • 1.7% voted for Gary Johnson Read more...

Nicolas Cage knows you're mocking him online, but he doesn't care

Nicolas Cage knows you've been mocking him online, and guess what? He doesn't care.

The Oscar-winning actor stars in three movies this month — Paul Schrader's crime caper Dog Eat Dog, Larry Charles' comedy Army of One and Mario Van Peebles' action drama USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage — and he relished the chance to play a diverse range of characters. Just because most people will see these films at home on their televisions doesn't mean Cage should be reduced to an internet punchline.

The other day I tweeted about the upcoming J.K. Simmons movie Renegades, and someone said it "sounds like the title of a Nic Cage film." But what does that really mean? Read more...

Michelle Obama doesn't want to run for president, and yet we continue to ask her

Michelle Obama doesn't want to run for office. She's said so repeatedly. But we keep on asking her anyway.

In the wake of Donald Trump's shocking presidential victory, people are once again calling for Michelle to take a stab at the 2020 election — just like they did after her moving speech at the Democratic convention and continued to do as she campaigned for Hillary Clinton.

Put more bluntly, people already want Michelle to rescue the same country that just let her down.

Relax a bit about politics-related stock market swings

In the hours after the president is elected, equity investors need to brace for volatility. What they shouldn’t do is panic.

That’s because regardless of how prices react on Nov. 9, next-day moves in the S&P 500 Index are useless in telling what comes after. While the index swings an average 1.5 percent the day after the vote, gains or losses over the first 24 hours predict the market’s direction 12 months later less than half the time.

This matters because the compulsion to act in the vote’s aftermath is often very strong — stocks swing twice as violently as normal those days, data compiled by Bloomberg show. They plummeted 5 percent just after Barack Obama beat John McCain in 2008. But while nothing says Wednesday’s reaction won’t be a harbinger for the year, nothing says it will, either, and investors should think before doing anything rash. Read more...

'Frequency' gets a visit from a 'Supernatural' favorite

The ability to change the past seems pretty appealing right now, so it's a good thing that we have The CW's Frequency to let us live vicariously through the time-altering adventures of Detective Raimy Sullivan (Peyton List) and her father, Frank (Riley Smith).

The Nov. 9 episode, "Deviation," sees the introduction of Karl Pierce — played by Supernatural alum Curtis Armstrong. Karl is an inmate who claims that he, like Raimy, can communicate with someone in a different time period: himself.

Is Karl delusional, or is it possible that the time-defying connection between Raimy in 2016 and Frank in 1996 is also affecting other people? We'll find out tonight.  Read more...

Donald Trump and the media: An unstoppable DDoS attack

It was inescapable. Over the last 18 months, the media covered Donald Trump more aggressively than anything or anyone else, in terms of both sheer volume and breadth of work.

That was the problem.

In the immediate aftermath of an election where the media wholly turned on the eventual president-elect, the question looms large: How'd the media get it so wrong?

Well, David Fahrenthold at the Washington Post didn't get it wrong. Neither did Maggie Haberman at the New York Times or Brian Stelter at CNN. Katy Tur at NBC News didn't get it wrong, and she worked under some of the toughest conditions a journalist will face outside of a war zone. Read more...
