"My friend, Joanne, how are you? I started reading the books. Thank you very much. I love you," Alabed said in a video, showing the cover of the Philosopher's Stone on a phone.   Read more...

Las Vegas Gaming Control Board takes a gamble on esports betting

The Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas finally received permission to take wagers for esports matches on Nov. 17, following months of unsuccessful attempts. It's the first casino in the U.S. to legally do so, but was it a one-off?

London-based bookmaker William Hill partnered with the hotel in seeking permission to take bets on League of Legends matches during IEM Oakland, a tournament held earlier in November.

Downtown Grand has already taken steps to establish itself as the go-to for esports events in Las Vegas. The hotel opened a first-of-its-kind esports lounge early 2016 — which it compares to a nightclub opening — and has been actively fighting to make esports betting legal in the state of Nevada.   Read more...

Thousands of people to Trump on Twitter: 'We can't just get along'

So much for coming together on Thanksgiving.

On Thursday morning, "We Can't Just Get Along" was trending on Twitter, a reference to a fiery column from Charles M. Blow of the New York Times about President-elect Donald Trump. It wasn't exactly a peace offering.

"You are an aberration and abomination who is willing to do and say anything — no matter whom it aligns you with and whom it hurts — to satisfy your ambitions," he wrote.

"I don’t believe you care much at all about this country or your party or the American people. I believe that the only thing you care about is self-aggrandizement and self-enrichment." Read more...

Bird throws a snake straight at a car's wind shield for some reason

Submitted by a 'Joanne' and apparently shot near Wivenhoe Dam in Queensland, the video was uploaded to the channel's Facebook page, entertaining thousands of viewers in the last few hours alone.

In short, it features a passing bird dropping a massive snake smack onto the wield shield of the cruising car, causing the passengers to laugh hysterically and cry "wind your window up!"

‫Syria's White Helmets apologise for #MannequinChallenge rescue video

Syria Civil Defence, a.k.a. the White Helmets, were recently named Nobel Peace Prize finalists for their work, reportedly saving over 70,000 civilian lives in the war-torn nation.

But a recent video from the group has resulted in considerable backlash, with the Syria Civil Defence now calling it "an error of judgement," according to CNN.

Filmed by opposition group the Revolutionary Forces of Syria (RFS), the clip is a riff on the #MannequinChallenge.

"This video and the related posts were recorded by RFS media with Syria Civil Defence volunteers, who hoped to create a connection between the horror of Syria and the outside world using the viral 'Mannequin challenge.' Someone help this koala mum; she has a stage five clinger on her face

There's an unbreakable bond between mums and their kids. But the adage doesn't typically extend to "cling to you mother's face for dear life and refuse to let go."

But a pair of very rare twin koalas in Australia are pushing the limits of parental patience — especially that face-hugging one.

Koala mum 'Nell' and her stage five clinger babies live in the bush outside of the Raymond Island Koala & Wildlife Shelter in Victoria.

Koala twins are quite uncommon — the first recorded instance was recorded by Australia's University of Queensland just 16 years ago.

It's no wonder then that these two furry rascals have some seriously adorable attachment issues. Read more...

The shocking news of his death has Queer and non-Queer Twitter users alike calling on the Australian government to protect the Safe Schools curriculum — a program created to educate school kids on LGBTQ identities and reduce homophobic and transphobic bullying.

The TV host gave as good as he got during The Late Late Show's rap battle on Wednesday night, uploaded to YouTube the day after. But ultimately it was Usain Bolt's insults about Corden's appearance and implied lack of sex that won over the crowd.

'Australia Day' celebrations moved in one city, sparking debate on the date

Australia Day, the country's national holiday on Jan. 26 every year, has been a contentious event to celebrate from the beginning.

It marks the day in which the first European settlers arrived in Australia in 1788, but is a day of mourning for many Indigenous people. It is often referred to as Invasion Day or Survival Day due to the high number of Indigenous deaths and cultural suffering following British colonisation.

It's why the City of Fremantle in Western Australia have moved the occasion on Jan. 28, two days after the official holiday. The city's council said "One Day in Fremantle," which is what the event is called, is a "culturally-inclusive alternative to traditional" celebrations. Read more...

India's court bans sales of firecrackers in Delhi

Better late than never. In what could be seen as a major step in curbing severe air pollution, India’s Supreme Court on Friday deemed it illegal to sell firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region.

The country’s highest judicial forum and final court of appeal cancelled the license of all firecracker sellers in the aforementioned areas, noting that firecrackers contribute to air pollution. The ban on firecrackers' sale has been enforced from today.

The decision comes weeks after India’s New Delhi was carpeted with layers of smog, with air quality index reading going beyond "severely hazardous." Lives of hundreds of millions of people were impacted during Diwali festival as visibility turned low and it became harder for people to breathe clean air.  Read more...

'Gilmore Girls' recap: 'Winter' brings snow, secrets and the worst fight in Gilmore history

Lindsay Lohan's odd Twitter row with small UK village ends with an apology video

LONDON — American actress and apparent British politics enthusiast Lindsay Lohan was a vocal supporter of the Remain camp during the UK's EU referendum in June.

She made her views known in a series of tweets that have since been deleted, but not before her opining captured the attention — and the ire — of the English village of Kettering.

She mentioned the town specifically by name in a tweet:

Um, sorry, but #LINDSAY how could you not know of Kettering, home to world's most unimaginative breakfast cereal

But that's neither here nor there. Calling the tweet "fierce and offensive," the Northamptonshire town's MP Philip Hollobone, a Leave campaigner, invited the Parent Trap starlet to turn on the town's Christmas lights to "redeem" her reputation. Read more...

PSA: Instagram notifies your friend when you screenshot their DMs

Instagram's latest Snapchat plagiarism update lets you send self-destructing messages to your friends — an excellent feature for sexy time. Just know that your friend will be notified if you take a screenshot of their message.

Buzzfeed remarked Friday that people are "freaking out" over the notifications, which work exactly as you'd expect them to. If you send a "disappearing message" to a friend and they take a screenshot, you'll get a message on your phone saying so — just like you would on Snapchat.

Note that the notifications are only for the new disappearing message feature, which, if you're anything like me, you probably can't figure out how to use anyway.  Read more...

Online shoppers gobbled up $1.9 billion in bargains on Thanksgiving

Before anyone could even help themselves to the cold Thanksgiving leftovers, U.S. shoppers had spent a whopping $1 billion online.

The turkey was less interesting than drones this year and people across the country dropped cash like it was going out of fashion. By 5 p.m. on Thursday, bargain hunters had spent $1.15 billion, according to Adobe Digital Insights. By the end of Thursday, that figure had hit $1.93 billion.

Once upon a time shoppers would patiently wait for the chaos of Black Friday to score a bargain but times are changing. Black Friday now lasts for months and shopping online between Thanksgiving courses is now common practice. This year's online sales were up by 11.5 percent on last year, with 40 percent of sales happening on mobile devices.  Read more...

30 minutes of hardcore porn just aired on CNN, apparently

So much for Parts Unknown. 👀

CNN viewers got an eyeful Thursday night when Anthony Bourdain's show was reportedly replaced by 30 minutes of hardcore pornography. RCN customers in Boston were apparently the only ones affected, so the mistake was probably on the cable provider's end — not the news network's.

'No Man's Sky' developer breaks long silence with update news

Hello Games finally has some news about what's coming for No Man's Sky, after more than two months of near-total silence.

An update issued Friday on the game's website notes that "The Foundation Update" is coming "this week." The name of the update has a double meaning: it introduces base-building mechanics to the game and it "[puts] in place a foundation for what is to come."

That's the extent of the details provided, though detailed patch notes — and the patch's release — are expected to follow "soon." The rest of the post addresses Hello's extended silence since the September patch. Read more...

'Gilmore Girls' episode 2 recap: 'Spring' sees Rory spiraling

This recap contains spoilers for episode 2 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, titled "Winter." Check out our recap of episode 1.

If the first episode of Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival was designed to show Emily in turmoil, episode 2 is all about Rory's descent into madness.

As Lorelai points out late in the episode, life has been pretty good to Rory so far; she's had a privileged life with a supportive family, enviable education and an eclectic array of men literally fighting over her through the years, so she hasn't really had to try hard at anything.

Indeed, as "Spring" proves, whenever the going gets tough, Rory's default setting is to throw a tantrum and quit — just as she did when Logan's father, Mitchum, told her she wasn't cut out to be a journalist in Season 5, which prompted her to drop out of Yale and move in with her grandparents.  Read more...

China's explosive 'Mad Max' knockoff is streaming now

Can't wait for the sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road?

Don't worry, an, um, homage to the movie was just released in China on Friday called Mad Shelia.

Available to stream on TenCent Video, it contains many of the thematic and aesthetic elements of George Miller's Oscar-winning film, but with a fraction of the budget. But, hey, there are explosions! And a gold car!

Hopefully the makers of the film, New Film Media, won't get sued like the people behind The Autobotsa Cars ripoff that Disney didn't appreciate.
