'Rogue One' tickets go on sale very, very soon

This is even better than a Tosche Station sale on power converters: Tickets for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will go on sale Monday, Nov. 28, the official Star Wars Twitter account announced Friday.

The movie releases Dec. 16, but if last year's record-breaking pre-sale for The Force Awakens is anything to go by, you'll want to snag your tickets nice and early. Theaters added showtimes to meet demand for Star Wars last year, but opening day tickets still sold out in many locations.

Granted, Rogue One isn't expected to be quite as big of a deal as The Force Awakens — which was the first new, live-action Star Wars movie since 2005. Disney told investors to manage their expectations back in September.  Read more...

If you remember 1991, you can't help but feel the nostalgia for Steven Spielberg and Robin Williams' Hook. Even Dante Basco, the actor who played the Lost Boys' leader, Rufio, feels it.

Which is why he reprised his role as Rufio for this episode of our CineFix series, Homemade Movies. It's a shot-for-shot remake, but with zero special effects. And a lot of plastic spoons.

It looks like Jill Stein might get her recount.

On Friday, the state's Elections Commission announced that Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, had officially filed for a recount, beating the deadline of 5 p.m. local time.

“The Commission is preparing to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for President of the United States," Mike Haas, director of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, said in a statement

Hass said that the commission would hold a teleconference with county clerks next week and that he anticipates "the recount will begin late in the week after the Stein campaign has paid the recount fee, which we are still calculating.”  Read more...

Super cute baby koala and mother just hanging out, looking like stuffed toys

There's little wonder why Australia's koalas keep getting compared to teddy bears, thanks to their beadlike eyes and big, slightly comical noses.

Particularly when you look at this koala joey Tarni, pictured hanging on the back of its mother in a Facebook post by Perth Zoo in Australia.

Tarni is the first koala to be bred successfully at the zoo in 15 years, where he was born in May, but has only just started appearing in public.

"The successful birth is the result of matchmaking Perth Zoo's male koala, 'Slater' with a new female, 'Wanda,' who arrived from Taronga Zoo," according to a zoo spokesperson in a statement to the West AustralianRead more...

'Gilmore Girls' episode 3 recap: Everything falls apart in 'Summer'

This recap contains spoilers for episode 3 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, titled "Summer." For your reading pleasure, here's our recap of episode 2.

The seeds of discord that were planted in "Winter" are starting to bear bitter fruit in "Summer," as we finally see Lorelai and Luke confront everything that's been left unsaid between them for the past few months.

Lorelai challenges Luke about going to see real estate with her mother and not telling her, and Luke questions Lorelai on her decision to keep her therapy a secret. They're both insignificant gripes in the grand scheme of things — the tip of an iceberg of insecurities that neither of them want to voice because their status quo has been comfortable, if not ideal, for the past nine years. Woman stabbed 11 times shares powerful message about domestic violence

In Australia, Friday marked White Ribbon Day, part of an ongoing campaign to end violence against women.

It's something important to Sydney-based doctor Angela Jay, 28, who nearly lost her life three weeks ago. Jay was stabbed 11 times and was doused in petrol by Paul Dennis Lambert, a man who she met on Tinder.

Jay is one of the lucky ones, compared to the numerous women who died due to domestic and family violence this year, something that she wrote about in a Facebook post on Friday.

"Today is White Ribbon Day and also Thanksgiving in the U.S. Both have particular significance for me this year as I almost lost my life 3 weeks ago in a very violent way," Jay wrote. Read more...

Cards Against Humanity are digging a giant hole for no good reason

While shoppers tussle over cheap TVs on Black Friday, the good people of Cards Against Humanity are doing something (arguably) much more constructive.

For no real reason, they are digging a big old "Holiday Hole" in a patch of dirt somewhere and asking people to donate money if they want the hole to get bigger. That's it.

You can check out the hole being dug live on YouTube, as a ticker shows how much people are donating in real-time. Isn't technology great?

For those wondering if the hole has some deep and meaningful purpose, the Holiday Hole FAQ covers it pretty well: "No." Read more...

Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro dead at 90

HAVANA — Former President Fidel Castro, who led a rebel army to improbable victory in Cuba, embraced Soviet-style communism and defied the power of 10 U.S. presidents during his half century rule, has died at age 90.

Castro's reign over the island-nation 90 miles from Florida was marked by the U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis a year later that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

The bearded revolutionary, who survived a crippling U.S. trade embargo as well as dozens, possibly hundreds, of assassination plots, died eight years after ill health forced him to formally hand power over to his younger brother Raul, who announced his death late Friday on state television. Great Barrier Reef is A-OK says climate change denier as she manhandles coral

Oh, the i.r.o.n.y.

Right-wing Australian politician and climate change waffler Pauline Hanson visited the Great Barrier Reef Friday and declared everything looked fine to her.

In early 2016, sections of the immense 2,300-kilometre (1,430-mile) reef suffered through a global coral bleaching event that especially impacted its northern reaches. Scientists found that unusually warm water temperatures spurred by El Niño and climate change had a devastating effect. But what's expertise in the face of blind ignorance?

The leader of the One Nation Party took a dip near Queensland's Great Keppel Island, the ABC reported, more than 1,000 kilometres from the epicentre of the reef's coral bleaching event at Lizard Island. Read more...

Revolutionary or despot: World reacts after Fidel Castro dies at 90

Fidel Castro died at age 90, his brother Raul Castro announced late Friday. Rebel leader and former president of Cuba, Castro was an antagonist of at least 10 American presidents and a staunch socialist until his death.

Fighting the dictator Fulgencio Batista, Castro and his soldiers swept into Havana on Jan. 8, 1959.

Although his promise of liberation and equality was greeted across central and southern America, Castro held thousands of political prisoners and kept a tight grip on his people. Thousands fled to the U.S. in the following decades. Read more...

Miami's Little Havana celebrates in the wake of Fidel Castro's death

For many Cuban Americans, the announcement of Fidel Castro's death brings closure to a long and troubled history.

The revolutionary guerrilla died aged 90, as announced by his brother on state television late Friday.

Shortly after the news, Miami's Little Havana neighborhood came alive.

Videos and pictures on social media showed people cheering, waving American and Cuban flags, honking car horns and banging pots and pans in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"Fidel! Tyrant! Take your brother with you!" some chanted, according to journalist Danny Rivero. Read more...

'Gilmore Girls' episode 4 recap: 'Fall' gives us the final four words, and plenty of tears

This recap contains spoilers for episode 4 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, titled "Fall." And if you already need a refresher, check out our recap of episode 3.

"Mom?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm pregnant."

Those are the heart-stopping final four words that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino always planned to end her beloved series with.

When you consider the show was supposed to end almost one decade ago, with no possibility of a Netflix revival at the time, it seems impossibly cruel — right up there with The Sopranos in terms of a cliffhanger ending.

As Lorelai might say, "full freakin' circle" — especially since, if the Palladinos had been involved with Season 7, Rory would've been 23 when she dropped the pregnancy bombshell on her newlywed mom. That's not quite as young as Lorelai was (16) when she became pregnant with Rory, but it's certainly young enough to disrupt Rory's life and career.  Read more...

6 films about being single that are actually relatable

LONDON — Being single is great. But movies about being single aren't always that enjoyable or relatable when you're single and ready to mingle.

Time and time again, films purporting to tell the singleton's story, actually tell the same old story. Single girl lives it up partying, dates someone she isn't keen on and then falls in love.

Sometimes there are a few twists and turns to this formula. Take the 'fixer upper' movies, for example, where the girl throws out all her booze and stops her bad habits in order to make herself loveable (we're looking at you Trainwreck). Or the 'best friend turns into lover' storyline (we're looking at you When Harry Met Sally). Read more...

In 1908, racers attempted to drive from New York to Paris in the dead of winter. It got complicated.

The racers line up at the starting point in Times Square.

Image: Library of Congress

On the frigid morning of Feb. 12, 1908, a quarter of a million people lined the streets of New York City to witness the start of a contest without precedent: a westward automobile race from New York to Paris.

Sponsored by the New York Times and the French newspaper Le Matin, the race featured six cars from four countries — three from France and one each from the United States, Germany and Italy

The planned route would take the racers across the United States, up through Canada into Alaska, over the Bering Strait (which race organizers hoped would be frozen solid in the dead of winter) to Siberia, through Russia and finally Europe and Paris. Read more...

You don't know me, online shopping algorithms

No one waits for Cyber Monday to launch the internet's biggest holiday shopping surge anymore.

We start shopping on Black Friday and don’t stop until our Santa’s bags of holiday goodies are full. But when the online shopping is done, do you ever look back at the choices you made and wonder how many were yours and how many were made by online algorithms? Do you ever look when the online choices are not about holiday gifts?

I have and I’m starting to hate these algorithms.

There is, as I see it, a fundamental flaw in the technology designed to serve up things we might like. They are based entirely on past choices and activities and leave zero room for improvisation and unpredictability. Read more...

Murderous K-2SO droid is our hero in new 'Rogue One' trailer

C-3PO just clutched his pearls.

A new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story released late Friday night shows us more of the K-2SO droid that will apparently aid our heroes — and he's definitely got a bit more bloodlust than his companions from the original trilogy.

Case in point: This moment where he immolates a number of Imperial stormtroopers...

He's also kind of sassy. "I'll be there for you — the captain said I had to," he says in response to a rallying cry from the assassin Baze Malbus.

During WWI, interned German sailors built a charming village in North Carolina

German internees playfully stage an "alligator attack" on the shore of the French Broad River.

During World War I, the sleepy North Carolina resort town of Hot Springs more than doubled in population as it became host to one of the largest internment camps in the country.

When the United States abandoned neutrality and declared war on Germany in April 1917, thousands of German commercial sailors were unlucky enough to be docked at American ports, including the crew of the world’s largest passenger ship, the SS Vaterland, which had been stuck in Hoboken, New Jersey since the outbreak of hostilities three years earlier. Obama and Trump's opposite reactions to Fidel Castro's death caught the internet's ire

Politicians and leaders around the world are reacting to the news that former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, passed away on Friday.

Saturday morning, President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump released very different statements on the death of 90-year-old Castro, both of which came under fire on social media.

Many Republicans have expressed their feelings that Obama's statement is far too soft, while others are mocking Trump for taking the time to focus on his endorsements in his much harsher statement about Castro.

Stop and watch Amber Heard's emotional domestic violence PSA

This is difficult to watch, but do it anyway.

To honor International Elimination of Violence Towards Women Day, Amber Heard recorded an emotional two-minute video detailing her experience in — and path out of — an abusive relationship.

"There is a lot of shame attached to that label of 'victim'," Heard says in the video, which was shot for The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet in partnership with #girlgaze. "If I hadn't had a few people that I really trust around me, a few women, support, a few friends, if I didn't have them around me, how different my life would be."

In May, Heard was granted a restraining order against actor Johnny Depp, her husband at the time. She alleged that Depp rampaged around their shared condo, attacked her with a bottle of wine and hit her in the face with a thrown cellphone, court documents revealed.  Read more...

Hillary Clinton's campaign will now help Jill Stein's vote recount

Somehow, 2016 presidential election drama is not quite over.

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign team will now cooperate with a Green Party-led effort to recount ballots in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where the combined margin of victory for President-elect Donald Trump sits at just over 100,000 votes. The margin is small, but still much too large for the recount effort to provide hope for Clinton supporters. Concerns about voting booth hacking has fueled a grassroots-funded attempt to investigate the results in those states.

Trump won in an eye-popping upset on Nov. 8, taking a series of states in the upper midwest thought to be Democratic strongholds.  Read more...
