What are those! NFL players can wear custom cleats this week without fines

Way back when, in Week 1 of the 2016 NFL season, the league made a big announcement — it would finally allow players to wear customized cleats. But only during Week 13.

The NFL nabbed a handful of players this season for wearing cleats that violated the league's notoriously strict uniform policy. Players still found ways to sport custom cleats, though, donning shoes within their team's color scheme or simply ditching the custom kicks before kickoff.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, players don't have to worry this weekend — Week 13 has finally arrived.

Klay Thompson makes the best paper airplane on the West Coast

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson continued his streak of irreverent press conference moments on Monday by tossing a top-notch paper airplane at the media before walking out of the room.

The self-proclaimed "best paper airplane on the West Coast" comes a couple weeks after Thompson sipped a Coors Light in the middle of a post-game interview.

Thompson's shooting skills on Monday weren't bad, either. The 26-year-old put up 20 points during the Warriors' narrow 105-100 victory.

But if basketball doesn't work out, at least Thompson has a backup plan.

Aaron Rodgers disappeared into a small tent and left everyone super confused

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers passed for 313 yards and two touchdowns in Monday night's victory over the Eagles.

But it's not Rodgers' stat line that has everyone talking.

It's his mysterious third-quarter disappearance into a sideline tent. Shortly after tweaking his hamstring, Rodgers made a trip to a small black tent on the Packers sideline.

Play the new 'Overwatch' map Oasis right now

Blizzard Entertainment is full of surprises.

Overwatch's upcoming map Oasis was released on the public test region Tuesday, a week before the map was expected to hit the PTR as promised at BlizzCon.

Oasis is the fourth control map in Overwatch and it's set in a futuristic city in the Middle East. Not only is this the first map to introduce jump pads to the game, but early testers found out that the environment can kill unsuspecting and clumsy players as well.

Father's search for autistic son's cup completed thanks to the kindness of the internet

Earlier this month, one caring dad launched a worldwide search on Twitter for a particular sippy cup that has not been produced in 10 years.

Marc Carter, 42, a dad and full-time caretaker for three children located in Devon, England, said the sippy cup is the only thing his 14-year-old autistic son Ben will drink out of, and his only one was falling apart. Without the cup, according to Carter, Ben would not drink, and he could get severely dehydrated and ill.

After receiving dozens of cups from kindhearted folks all over the world, the cup's original manufacturer, Tommee Tippee, dug up their old manufacturing plans and are going to make a special batch of 500 cups just for Ben. Read more...

An Instagram account is making a powerful call to Ivanka Trump to discuss her father's controversial behavior.

The account, named dear_ivanka, was started by the Halt Action Group (comprised of curator Alison Gingeras and artist Jonathan Horowitz) to encourage Trump's eldest daughter to acknowledge the president-elect's ugly rhetoric.

By using idealized photographs from Ivanka's own social media accounts, dear_ivanka addresses the businesswoman and former model from the voices of groups her father has marginalized such as survivors of sexual assault, women seeking abortions and American Muslims. Read more...

Dollywood closes its doors as wildfire ravages nearby region

Dolly Parton's famous Dollywood theme park near the Great Smoky Mountains in eastern Tennessee was closed Tuesday as a wildfire ravaged the area and made its way seriously close to the park's border.

The legendary attraction, a Parton-themed collection of roller coasters, water rides and other attractions along with a resort and mountain cabins, was expected to remain shuttered through Wednesday, park spokesman Pete Owens told Mashable.

Dolly said she was "heartbroken" by the fire, which seems to have spared her domain for now — although it did reportedly reach "right on the doorstep."

8th grader's Spotify playlist gets him in big trouble with mom

There are some things better kept off mom's radar, and this 8th grader learned that lesson the hard way when his mother happened to uncover his personal Spotify playlist.

In a series of Snapchats posted to Twitter, his sister Liv shared their mom's priceless reaction to discovering what exactly was being said in her son's headphones. Unbeknownst to mom, middle schoolers listen to hip hop these days.

It starts off relatively mild with rappers like Kendrick Lamar and D.R.A.M rapping about drugs, cash and partying.

But things increase in profanity and graphic content when she discovers J. Cole's "Wet Dreamz" and the genius lyricism of Kanye West in "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1"—a.k.a that song in which he waxes poetic about bleached assholes.  Read more...

Long live cable: Why streaming TV is a fragmented, broken pain-in-the-app

The cord-cutting dream has given way to a stark reality: Streaming TV is a mess. And on Tuesday, it only got messier, as DirecTV rolled out their entry into the category, DirecTV Now, launching Wednesday:

DirecTV Now holes: No DVR yet, no NFL on phone, no local station feed where ABC/NBC/Fox don't own the station, no NFL Sunday Ticket, no CBS

— Shalini Ramachandran (@shalini) November 28, 2016

Also: It's not even available on Roku until 2017.

Again and again, we hear that the goal  tech companies is to create a product that "just works," as Apple's Steve Jobs might say.

And even though it's a bit pricy, cable TV still offers that experience over streaming: You turn it on. You flip the channel. You DVR a show, or you don't. At its most recent product launch, Apple looked to apply that thinking to its new TV app. Read more...

‘Days of Future Past’ changed X-Men history from comic to film

Comic book movies have become so frequent that by now we mostly accept that they’re moving beyond origin stories (with the sadly notable exception of Amazing Spider-Man) to tackle the plot lines of specific issues within various comic book series.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is based on two 1981 issues of the Uncanny X-Men series. Our CineFix series, What's the Difference, explores how the comic book (and the weighty X-Men lore that comes with it) was neatly streamlined into a motion picture.

'Manchester by the Sea,' 'Moonlight' take top honors from National Board of Review

Manchester by the Sea was named 2016's best film by the National Board of Review, raising the awards-season profile of Kenneth Lonergan's devastating family drama — though the film has been destined for a date with the Academy Awards ever since its debut at Sundance.

The NBR on Tuesday also gave its Best Actor and Best Male Breakthrough Performance awards to Manchester stars Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges, respectively, while writer-director Lonergan won Best Original Screenplay.

The honors — something of an awards-season starting point along with the Gotham Awards and Independent Spirit nominations — cement Affleck and Lonergan as Oscar frontrunners, and also lend Hedges some credibility as he tries to earn a slot in the ever-competitive supporting category. Read more...

World's oldest woman shares her secret to long life: Eating eggs and cookies

Emma Morano, an Italian woman who just celebrated her 117th birthday, revealed her secret to living so long that she's the last living person born in the 1800s: eggs and cookies.

Speaking to The Guardian a few weeks ago, Morano credited her longevity to an unusual diet: “I eat two eggs a day and that’s it. And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth."

And cookies were, indeed, on the menu on Tuesday as Morano celebrated her birthday at her home in Verbania, Italy, attended by her two elderly nieces, a pair of caregivers and her long-time physician. Read more...

Samsung brand autopsy: How can the company earn back trust?

Now that the figurative smoke has cleared from the dozens of literal fires caused by faulty Samsung smartphones, the Korean electronics giant has entered into that most craven of corporate actions: Brand-repair mode.

Its advertising — which went completely dark for much of October — is back to pre-recall levels, a date has been set for the release of a full-scale autopsy on the problem and the company is even exploring splitting into two in response to investor backlash.

The immediate financial damage has been rough: The Galaxy Note 7 recall could cost the company as much as one billion dollars, and all the flux left a big opening for competitors like the iPhone and the newly released Google Pixel to carve into its market. Read more...

Cheeky rare bird moves traffic cones around, tricking dumb humans

Justin Trudeau's love fest with environmentalists ends with tar sands pipeline approvals

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has approved two of three controversial oil pipelines that, if built, could knock Canada off its course to meeting its climate change commitments, opponents say.

Trudeau on Tuesday signed off on Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline as well as Enbridge's Line 3 pipeline, both of which would carry crude oil from Canada's tar sands region in Alberta to global markets.

He rejected a third pipeline, Northern Gateway, which the prime minister said "wasn’t in the best interests of affected communities."

Guy mistakes jellyfish for a fake breast, hands it in to confused police

Mistaken identity is a helluva thing, particularly when it comes to gelatinous blobs.

One Australian man has clearly been reading too many true crime novels, because last Friday, he mistook a washed-up jellyfish for something more sinister — a rogue breast implant. The concerned citizen even took his discovery to local police on the Sunshine Coast.

The embarrassment started when police at Maroochydore station politely informed the man that the damning evidence he had handed over was in fact the corpse of a jellyfish. Although not until they had bagged and tagged the "evidence" first. Read more...

Guns were the hot ticket and interest in firearms on America's biggest shopping day seemed to hit its highest yet. The FBI processed more background checks for gun buyers throughout Black Friday than on any other day, the agency told The Trace.

There were a total of 185,713 checks — the most made in a single day since the FBI's national instant check system was launched almost 20 years ago. But the huge spike was one almost no one saw coming.

Amsterdam's night mayor has an alternative for Sydney's lockout laws

Amsterdam and Sydney are polar opposites when it comes to nightlife.

While the Dutch capital contains numerous clubs with 24-hour licenses, Australia's largest city has operated strict lockout laws since 2014.

Patrons are forbidden from entering licensed venues located in Sydney's city centre after 1:30 a.m., and alcohol service is cut at 3 a.m. on the dot, due to concerns about alcohol-fuelled violence.

It's a measure which "doesn't make sense" to Amsterdam's Night Mayor, Mirik Milan, who spoke to the ABC.

"I think [lockout laws] will not work because, probably, what the State Government wants is behavioural change, and you don't get behavioural change from blaming it on the operators," he told the news outlet.  Read more...

Romney dining with Trump is the ultimate real-life Jim Halpert

Randall is still processing his feelings about Rebecca not telling him about his birth father, William, for all these years, and he makes a detailed list about all his bruised feelings. In flashbacks, we see Jack try to convince Rebecca to find Randall’s birth father so Randall can have a better sense of himself, but Rebecca is against it because she’s afraid of what could happen if his birth parents have rights and try to take Randall back. Jack promises her he’d never let that happen.  Read more...

Politician unleashes bizarre whip analogy in response to refugee protesters

Conservative politician George Christensen has been a bad, bad boy on Twitter.

Australian parliament was interrupted Wednesday by an estimated 30 protesters, there to demand an end to what they see as the inhumane treatment of refugees.

But rather than hear them out, politicians either walked straight out, turned their backs or, in some cases, implied the need for corporeal punishment.

Protestors from Whistleblowers, Activists and Citizens Alliance (WACA) linked arms and reportedly even superglued their hands to part of the building in defence of refugees stuck in mandatory detention centres offshore. Read more...

Bernie Sanders: Donald Trump's illegal vote tweets are 'delusional'

Bernie Sanders didn't hold back when it came to Donald Trump's recent conspiracy-laden tweets, which show no signs of abating.

Sanders made an appearance on Conan Tuesday night, where the discussion steered toward the President-elect and the ensuing debate over so-called illegal voters having an influence in the election.

"I tell you what my take is, first of all it's delusional. It's totally insane," he said. "Nobody believes that who studies elections, or election patterns."

"This is what is scary about it: When he says that, he's really sending a signal to Republican [leaders] all over the country. What he's saying is, we've got to suppress the vote." Read more...

Seal thinks he's a cow and makes a paddock his home

There really is something to be said for stopping and asking for directions.

A very lost fur seal turned up in a paddock in rural Australia on Tuesday and National Parks and Wildlife services were perplexed to say the least.

After being stumbled-upon by a civilian and her dog, organisation staff were called in to assess the furry situation and figured out how the salty sea dog got so far from home.

Got a cute story tonight - this little guy was lost in a paddock at Bega & had to be rescued. Fur #seal long way from home @PRIME7SthCoast pic.twitter.com/M1PUrucnYC

Too many mental health apps put style over substance

We share some of our most intimate data with mental health apps, but there's surprisingly little proof of what they give us in return.

Many medical experts are starting to find problematic the lack of clear science backing up apps that promise to help with everything from low mood to depression.

Bruce Bolam, program director at VicHealth, oversaw a recent review of more than 300 health and wellbeing apps.

While he praised the dynamism of a "free market of smartphone apps," Bolam explained that while many apps scored top marks when it came to design and gamification, the science behind their treatment method was a lot weaker. Read more...

Hey Australia: Kazakhstan is better at than you at a whole bunch of things

Australians are up in arms after a report was published showing the country doing dismally in global education rankings.

Yes, we dropped from 18th to 28th in Year 4 maths and from 12th to 17th for Year 8 maths since 2011. It's not great. But for some reason, all anyone could talk about is that Kazakhstan now surpasses Australia for primary education.

It was so desperate a shortcoming that even an Australian senator used the report to reference the mockumentary Borat.

"I don't want to denigrate Kazakhstan, or indeed their artistic skills with movies like Borat," Minister for Education Simon Birmingham said, according to the ABC. "I think though Australia should be seeking to be amongst the best in the world and declines like this are unacceptable and that we need to be working hard to turn it around."  Read more...

The folks at the Gardner Police Department in Kansas were only trying to help local residents with finding a suspected mountain lion that had been spotted in the area, according to its Facebook post on Monday.

So it deployed two trail cameras to help detect the dangerous animal, in which it was fortunate to not find any in the images taken.

Instead, an image showing different kind of wild life showed up:

Our lack of sleep is costing the world billions of dollars

Modern humans have plenty of bad habits that keep us from getting a good night's sleep.

We work long days and check email after-hours, or we toss and turn while fretting about student loans. We fire off late-night tweets or binge-watch Westworld episodes before bed. During the day, some of us drink and smoke too much or exercise too little, which also disrupts the sleep cycle.

These behaviors aren't just bad for our personal health — they also take a massive collective toll on the global economy, a new report found.

Google Earth Timelapse shows us how our planet has changed since 1984

In 2013, Google launched Timelapse — a Google Earth project that shows us how the Earth has changed in the last thirty years or so.

Now, Google has updated Timelapse with the four past years of imagery — it now spans the period from 1984 to 2016 — and "petabytes" of new data, which includes new, sharper images.

The imagery gives you quite an amazing view into various processes that change the shape of our planet — deforestation, glacial motion, urbanization, war. How to make food that glows bright green in UV light

The fourth-year university student made the strange-looking concoction by throwing vitamin B2 pills, tonic water and green food colouring in the water used to boil the rice.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus's specs closely match a certain Samsung phone

We're aware that calling every phablet a Samsung Note7 replacement is getting a bit stale at this point. But Meizu's new flagship device, the Pro 6 Plus, has certain traits that make it seem the Chinese company is really trying to fix the post-Note7 blues

First, the Meizu Pro 6 Plus has the same AMOLED screen and resolution and the Note7 (5.7-inches and 2,560x1,440 pixels), the same processor (Samsung's octa-core Exynos 8890) and the same amount of storage (64GB, but a 128GB variant is also available) and RAM memory (4GB).

But the Pro 6 Plus's similarities go further: it actually has a reduced megapixel count for the rear camera compared to its predecessor, the Meizu Pro 6 — 12 instead 21 megapixels. This, again, matches the 12-megapixel camera of the Note7, as does the front 5-megapixel shooter.  Read more...

India's Supreme Court asks all theaters to play the national anthem before movies

In what is a strange ruling, India’s top court has made it mandatory for all public theaters in the country to play national anthem before any movie. To go with that, every movie goer will also be required to stand up as a sign of respect for the motherland.

The Supreme Court said today every citizen is "duty-bound" to abide by the ideals in the constitution and to "show respect to the national anthem."

"Respect must be shown as the national anthem is symbol of patriotism. People shouldn’t follow paths of individually perceived notion of freedom," Justice Dipak Misra said as he read out the judgment. Read more...

The National Lottery hack is why you shouldn't reuse your password

About 26,500 National Lottery accounts have been accessed by hackers, according to its operator Camelot.

The company says they've recorded "suspicious activity" on a small proportion of the 9.5 million players registered online, indicating that people's login details, such as email and passwords, may have been stolen from other websites.

Camelot says hackers were not able to access "core National Lottery systems."

"We do not hold full debit card or bank account details in National Lottery players' online accounts and no money has been taken or deposited," Camelot said. "However, we do believe that this attack may have resulted in some of the personal information, that the affected players hold in their online account, being accessed." Read more...

What to do if you're a victim of 'sextortion'

Cases of "sextortion" have more than doubled in the UK in the past year and four men have taken  their own lives after being targeted by criminals online, according to figures released by the police.

"Sextortion" is a form of blackmail where victims are befriended online by criminals using a fake identity who then persuade them to perform sexual acts in front of a webcam.

Using an attractive woman to entice the victim, organised crime croups then threaten to share videos with victims' friends and family unless they agree to pay a huge sum of money.  Read more...

You can now watch every 'Harry Potter' film in 90 minutes

LONDON — Back when the Harry Potter film franchise was winding up, quite a few people debated whether or not the final book should have been split into two movies.

The bridge featured in the Foreign Office's tweet is a different bridge in Scotland that completed construction in 1890. Swedish Christmas goat's fiery demise comes sooner than usual

LONDON — Alas, even Sweden isn't safe from the wrath of 2016.

In our continued coverage of extended metaphors for this tumultuous year, here's a holiday-themed analogy of well-intentioned calamity.

This tale starts out quaintly enough. In the Swedish town of Gävle, there exists a lovely holiday tradition of erecting a charming goat effigy. The structure, complete with red ribbons and twinkling lights, is built in tribute to the Scandinavian Yule Goat, a time-honored symbol of the season.

The town gathers around the structure to greet the goat on the first day of Advent. According to the BBC, this year (for the goat's 50th anniversary) around 2.3m kronor (£200,000; $250,000) was spent on its construction and the associated festivities.  Read more...

Comic book take on journalism is an essential celebration of the embattled profession

Like many a Facebook user before the 2016 election, comic book artist Sarah Glidden used to consume a lot of articles without thinking much about where they came from. "I just thought about journalism like it was water," she says. "You turn on the faucet and it comes out."

Then some reporter friends mentioned they were going on a trip to two of the most troubled countries in the world: Iraq and Syria. Glidden tagged along on a tourist visa, curious about the reporting process.

The journalists, who worked for a daily online magazine now called The Globalist, agreed to have the mirror turned on them. Glidden took her own recorder and filled 8 GB SD card after 8 GB SD card with...well, pretty much everything they said and did, whether it seemed important or not. 'The Crown' is a low-key guide to outfoxing the men in your way

LONDON — It's easy to dismiss Netflix's new series The Crown as just another period drama to fill the gaping hole left behind by Downton Abbey. But, look beyond the opulent costumes and posh accents and you'll see another story — one about the triumph of female strength in a world powered by men.

On 6 February 1952, a 25-year-old woman became queen of a realm ruled by men. That woman was Queen Elizabeth II. And that day heralded the beginning of a new Elizabethan age

The grieving daughter of a beloved king had just inherited a post that hadn't been occupied by a woman for just over half a century. And, world leadership was no less patriarchal than it had been when the last female monarch, Queen Victoria, died in 1901

While many might see a woman thrust into the apex of power by a position gained through heredity — and not via a democratic process — as the antithesis of a feminist icon, The Crown Read more...

Here's how to check if your finicky iPhone 6S battery needs to be replaced

If your iPhone 6S has been plagued with power issues, never fear: Apple is offering battery replacements for the faulty devices.

The abrupt system shut-downs make it abundantly clear that something's not quite right, but when Apple addressed the issue and announced the global replacement program, it didn't provide an easy way to find out if your phone is affected.

Image: apple/screengrab

Unless you really love your phone, it's probably extremely unlikely that you have its birthday marked on the calendar. Short of taking it all the way to the Apple Store and checking in there, Apple gives no easy way to know if your device is eligible for the replacement.  Read more...

Jimmy Fallon forces Neil Diamond and Natalie Portman to play 'Password'

Watching talented celebrities play guessing games together is comforting because they, too, are terrible at them.

On Tuesday night's The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Neil Diamond, Natalie Portman, J.J. Abrams and Fallon played the "Password" game. The game stipulates that each participant has to guess their assigned password with a one-word clue, which made for some interesting answers.

Neil Diamond guessed "salad" twice and asked for a different password, so it's not surprising him and Fallon were no match for Abrams and Portman.

Facebook's being a bully again, this time over Prisma's live video filters

In yet another case of "giant tech company choking out startup," Facebook has reportedly blocked Prisma's super gnarly art filters from working with Facebook Live videos.

Facebook claims the Prisma app's use of its Live Video API doesn't comply with terms and conditions, according to TechCrunch. Facebook claims the API is only for publishing live video from non-mobile devices such as professional cameras and drones.

"Your app streams video from a mobile device camera, which can already be done through the Facebook app. The Live Video API is meant to let people publish live video content from other sources such as professional cameras, multi-camera setups, games or screencasts," Facebook told Prisma. McDonald's Big Mac inventor dies at 98

The McDonald's franchise-owner who invented the fast food chain's signature Big Mac has died at the age of 98.

The Associated Press reports that Michael "Jim" Delligatti, who introduced the menu item 49 years ago, died on Monday night.

Delligatti created the Big Mac in 1967 at his Uniontown, Pennsylvania, franchise. As he told the AP in 2006, McDonald's was at first hesitant to take on the burger — consisting of two beef patties on a sesame-seed bun, with "special sauce," lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions — because their traditional menu items were already selling well.  Read more...

After 100 episodes, the 'Arrow' stars look back on building a superhero universe

In the current era of Peak TV, shows are considered lucky if they can score a full season pickup, let alone multiple season renewals. But Arrow, The CW's first Greg Berlanti-produced superhero series, defied all the odds.

Five seasons after it first premiered on the network, Arrow is not only reaching a milestone of 100 episodes this week during the big DC TV crossover with The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, but it is also responsible for spawning all three of those other DC Comics series.

Without Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) saving the city in his green hood, there would never have been Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) zipping through the streets of Central City or Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) piloting the Waverider throughout time or even Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) soaring through the sky in National City.     Read more...

WiFi for every room: Tour the WiFi-enabled house of the future

The “smart home” is becoming a reality. We’re starting to see the launch and adoption of countless types of Wi-Fi-enabled devices that previously had no digital value or function. It’s only a matter of time before the entirety of our homes are stitched together through the same Internet connection, making the bandwidth and coverage of your Wi-Fi more important than it’s ever been.

The term “smart home” is somewhat vague, and open to multiple interpretations, as there is no single industry standard for how smart home technology is developed or how it’s defined. Instead, colloquially, a smart home is a home with at least a handful of Wi-Fi enabled devices that offer digital menus, advanced features, and other high-tech upgrades for otherwise common appliances and functions. So what types of appliances are currently enjoying these features?  Read more...

This controller solves the Nintendo NES Classic's biggest problem

Getting your hands on an NES Classic — the coveted digital update of Nintendo's popular console from the '80s — is the challenge of this holiday season

But once you've finally called in a few favors and spent as much (or more) than you would on a PS4 or Xbox One, the NES Classic has one more agonizing hurdle for gamers to clear: how to manage its ridiculously short (two-foot!) controller cable.

Sure, if you're going for the full-on retro gaming experience, being tethered to the box is just part of the old-school charm. As we mentioned in our review of the Classic, there are cable extenders available to make it less painful. But we live in a post-cord world — and some aspects of nostalgia deserve to be left in the past.  Read more...

Boom time is over: Startups are failing as funding dries up

Declines in the venture capital market are hitting startups of all sizes, but the ones left particularly vulnerable are the thousands of young companies that raised seed funding during headier times just a year or two ago.

The seed frenzy peaked in the first quarter of 2015 when more than 1,500 startups raised their first rounds of capital, according to research firm PitchBook Data. Many of those companies are now running out of cash, and most won’t be able to get more.

Dying is a fact of life for most startups, but corporate graveyards are filling more quickly this year. The pain is likely to drag on for another 12 to 18 months as early-stage companies fizzle out earlier than usual or limp along without access to more capital, said Gus Tai, a general partner at Trinity Ventures. “The pressure is even more acute,” he said. Trump will be able to mass-text all Americans and what have we done to deserve this?

You know how every so often you find yourself awake at some strange hour and suddenly your phone buzzes and you're excited, because, hey, maybe that person you went on a first date with last night just had to text you, and then you grab your phone and of course it's your mom and you're like, dammit, mom, why are you even awake right now?

The menstrual app space is crowded, but one company is setting itself apart with new funding.

Clue, the period and ovulation tracker, raised $20 million in a Series B round announced on Wednesday.

The round was led by Nokia Growth Partners with participation from Union Square Ventures, Mosaic Ventures and other investors. Union Square Ventures and Mosaic Ventures led Clue's $7 million Series A round in 2015.

Arctic air poised to invade the U.S. after record warm November

The fall of 2016 has been astoundingly warm across much of North America, but indications are that this is about to change in a big way.

So, consider yourself warned.

November will go down in the record books as one of the weirdest such months on record, with North America's climate stuck on "roast," at least compared to average temperatures for this time of year, the Arctic setting records for unusual warmth and low sea ice coverage, and Siberia locked in snow and cold that is even frigid for, well, Siberia.

It now appears that some of that cold, though not the heart of it, is poised to slosh eastward and then south, into Alaska, Canada and the U.S.  Read more...

Instagram expected to have more advertisers than Twitter by next year

As Twitter struggles to keep advertisers interested, Instagram may soon take a lead over its beleaguered competitor.

A new report from market research firm Emarketer is projecting a big jump in the number of American brands that will make use of the Facebook-owned image-sharing app in the coming year.

The study predicts that nearly three quarters of American companies with 100 employees or more will turn to Instagram for marketing purposes in 2017 — up from a little more than half this year.

Meanwhile, Twitter's popularity among marketers is expected to continue to stagnate at around 66 percent. According to the firm's data, the number of brands using Twitter has grown less than two percent since 2014. Read more...
