Snapchat Spectacles review: Wearables have never been this cool
You’d be forgiven if you looked at Snapchat’s — I’m sorry, Snap Inc.’s — Spectacles and thought they were just another Google Glass. Both face wearables have a camera for hands-free video recording, after all. But the similarities stop there. Spectacles — aside from the whole camera-in-eyewear thing — couldn’t be more different and that’s why I think a lot of people are going to like them. Which is a good thing, because Google Glass was something only nerds found attractive. The public, what with all the bans and #glasshole shaming, sure as hell didn’t think Google Glass was cool. If you like reading on the subway but hate schlepping a heavy book with you, there are a few solutions: You could get an e-reader, you could listen to an audiobook or you could wear your literature. If you're fashion-inclined and adept at reading upside-down, you could wear a pair of tights with your favorite book's words printed on them. Israeli designer Dega sells tights on the Etsy store TightsShop that are an homage to a variety of novels and authors. Passages and quotes from specific books are printed on the tights. Obviously, they're more for turning your literary passions into fashion than giving you something to read, but nothing's stopping you. Read more... Brandon Dassey, once convicted as a teenager in 2007 for helping his uncle Steven Avery with a woman's murder in Wisconsin that was the focus of the 2015 Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer, will be released from prison pending an appeal, local news reports announced Monday. Brendan Dassey had confessed to helping his uncle, Avery, carry out the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach, but attorneys argued that Dassey's confession was false, and came under duress after his constitutional rights were violated throughout the investigation. Dassey was 16 when Halbach was killed in 2005 after she went to the Avery family's property to photograph some vehicles. Read more... Global carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels stayed flat in 2015 for the third straight year despite economic growth, a new assessment has found. However, this pause in the growth of emissions is likely to be short-lived unless new emissions policies are accelerated, scientists say. The report, from researchers at the University of East Anglia and the Global Carbon Project, found that the world has slowed its annual growth rate of emissions from about 2.3 percent per year prior to 2013 down to a projected 0.2 percent in 2016. However, before you take this new information and pronounce global warming solved, two key facts are important to consider. One is that much of the slowdown is due to lower economic growth in China, according to co-author Glen Peters, a researcher at the and Environmental Research (CICERO) in Oslo. Read more... Sometimes, all it takes is one song to slow things down and restore any semblance of calm for a moment. Willow Smith came to the rescue today after she shared "November 9th," a short and sweet track that is her response to the election results. "Baby girl, I know you're tired / Don't let the world put out your fire / Take my hand and you will see / Sadness and anger aren't everything," she gently croons, continuing with encouraging lyrics. I've always had a special relationship with the moon. One of my earliest memories involves standing with my uncle in his Texas backyard looking up at the moon's pocked surface through his telescope. That view gave me a sense of smallness I could take comfort in: Our moon — the same moon people around the world look at each night — has been around for millions of years, and it will be for billions more. Today when I look at the moon, I still experience that same kind of calm and unity I felt all those years ago, and tonight, the moon is all but begging for our attention. It doesn't come as a surprise that so many people in India are using WhatsApp. Whether you're looking for a plumber, or going to a fish market in India, WhatsaApp has become ubiquitous in the country. Even government organisations such as police departments are using WhatsApp, and so are teachers who are using this instant platform to swiftly connect with students. Read more... LONDON — Yep, I know it's a bold statement to make, but I'm sticking by it. There are a lot of brilliant characters in J.K. Though the human body tops out at a steamy 98.6 degrees, it certainly doesn't feel that way on a cold day. The science behind staying warm is actually pretty simple: When your body converts calories into energy it produces heat. The more energy you create, the more heat you’ll produce. Keeping that heat close to your body helps you to retain it longer, while feeding your body properly is essential to fueling the fire (so to speak.) Once the temperature drops, the most important thing is to keep your core warm — this helps vital organs work properly and protects brain function. Your smartphone's camera is useful in so many different ways. You depend on it for Snapchat, Instagram ... and identifying skin cancer? Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is expected to cause more than 10,000 deaths in the U.S. alone in 2016. Researchers are now hard-pressed to find a new way to catch the disease and others like it in the earliest stages. That's where that handy, ubiquitous iPhone camera can help, according to new research. In an IBM Research Blog post, Dr. Noel Codella outlines a means of identifying markers of melanoma via skin image analysis that might be available to doctors and patients in the future. Read more... Nicki Minaj is a real crowd pleaser, and her "Black Beatles" freestyle is no exception. Just yesterday, Rae Sremmurd's song hit #1, righteously extinguishing the The Chainsmokers' run at the top spot after 12 weeks. The shakeup effectively ruins the duo's shot at breaking Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 16-week record for "One Fine Day." The song got a boost when a famous Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, did a mannequin challenge set to the track. Now, Minaj has stepped in to help keep the streak going. Google Photos is arguably the best photo service for storing your photos and videos, and now Google's got a new app called PhotoScan that makes it stupid easy to digitize old printed photos and upload them. The free app launching Tuesday on iOS and Android uses Google's powerful machine learning to turn print photos into digital pics in seconds. The real pain of digitizing print photos is what a hassle the entire process is. You either need to use a big, slow scanner or get them professionally scanned, which costs money. Read more... A pilot of a United flight from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, used the plane's intercom system to address passengers after a racially charged post-election fight broke out on board Friday. According to the clip's YouTube description, the fight started when, "an individual with a 'plaid shirt and a camo cap' said something racist (about being 'glad to have kept his guns') to an African American lady, and she began to cry and freak out." The two passengers were reportedly separated, and the captain of the flight came on the plane's PA system to set things straight. If you know startup phone maker OnePlus, you know all about how it doesn't follow the rulebook. From the company's invite-to-buy OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 to this year's premium OnePlus 3 to the company's VR "launches," the company walks to the beat of its own drum, not the industry's. Which is why the company's doing something it's never done before: replacing its flagship OnePlus 3 barely half a year later with the even better OnePlus 3T. I asked OnePlus's head of marketing Kyle Kiang what the "T" in 3T stands for. His answer: Some people use "S" (a clear reference to Apple) and OnePlus decided to use "T" — just because it's one letter after S. It's one plus. You get it? Read more... After an exhaustive reign atop the news cycle and evolution into a full-on meme, the Galaxy Note 7 saga looked to be over after Samsung halted production of the fiery phone model and crippled some devices still in circulation. An incident in Canada, however, has thrust the issue of exploding batteries back into the public eye — only this Samsung device wasn't a Note 7. According to CTV News, Amarjit Mann of Winnipeg was driving when he felt his Samsung Galaxy S7 warming up in his pocket. As soon as he took it out, the device exploded, filling the car with smoke. Bookstore praised for banning Wi-Fi, laptops and phones
A bookstore in Wyoming is bringing its customers back to the dark age, before the soft glow of phones and laptops illuminated everyone's faces. Wind City Books, a book/coffee shop in Casper, Wyoming, has been getting attention (online, oddly enough) for a sign posted in the front of its shop, telling customers to put their electronics away. The sign reads: "We want people to be able to come into this store, relax, enjoy a book — you know, find a book for them that's going to work well, either entertain or inform them," store owner Vicki Burger told KTRK. Drones have always been flying robots, but all those smarts haven't stopped them from flying backwards into trees, walls and people. The new DJI Phantom 4 Pro won't do that. This is DJI's first drone with 360-degree awareness thanks to six collision-avoidance systems arrayed around its body. With them, the quadcopter builds a 3D map of obstacles behind, in front and below. SEE ALSO: Can a drone rake leaves? Gorden told Mashable she decided to photograph the boy partially because of the determined look on his face. "He seemed anxious but strong," she said. Read more... The stars of the Avengers films may not actually have superpowers, but a lot of them do have Twitter accounts. "The Avengers are assembling," Snyder wrote, highlighting tweets from Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury, who is admittedly not an actual Avenger).
Brilliant math teacher 'threatens' puppies to get through to students
Though it can be a struggle for teachers to motivate their students, this teacher devised a low-key terrifying way to catch the class's attention: Threaten the life of a puppy. Obviously fed up with repeated errors, this teacher used clever posters to persuade students to treat math equations as though the lives of innocent animals were in their hands. It's not a bad idea. Math is difficult for a lot of people. But if the life of a tiny orange kitten depends on your grades, getting an A should be easy. Read more... Chicago Cubs fans had suffered 108 years of misery. So losing one little tooth is basically nothing, right? One Cubs fan put that notion to the test when he bet his friends that if the Cubs won the World Series, they could rip out his tooth. So when Chicago won its first Fall Classic since 1908 earlier this month, the fan stood by his claims. "I'm not a liar," he declared before bidding goodbye to one of his teeth. "It's not what I'm about. Not now. Not ever." Clutching a Cubs "W" flag, he watched the tooth soar out of his mouth while connected to a solid football toss from his buddy. Read more...
