Tom Hanks sent a fan a typewriter as a thank you present

While Tom Hanks was receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom yesterday, a fan of his got a surprise gift in the mail.

The actor, who has never been shy about expressing his love of typewriters, sent artist Denise Esposito a glorious typewriter along with a personal note after she presented him with a book of sketches.

"Tom Hanks just sent me a typewriter and a thank you note after I gave him as a gift a sketchbook filled with drawings of all his movies," Esposito wrote on a Reddit post Wednesday. "How unbelievably cool is that?" Read more...

The NHL has a new team and people are already mocking it

The NHL on Tuesday unveiled the name and logo of its newest team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

The Knights are hockey's first expansion team since 2000 and will field a roster through an expansion draft next summer, reports USA Today. It was a great moment for Las Vegas; the Knights are Sin City's first major professional sports team.

But we can always count on the internet to find something to troll. In this case, it's that Golden Knights logo.

Get out of your filter bubble with this new browser extension

A new browser extension could help make your Facebook feed feel a little less like an echo chamber for your own political beliefs.

The program, called EscapeYourBubble, claims to replace ads on the social network with hand-picked articles that illuminate a point of view you may not have considered (though in practice, the articles currently more often appear around the ads).

Users simply identify as either "Democrat" or a "Republican" when installing the plug-in, and potentially opposing viewpoints are served accordingly.

Because of the way its news algorithm matches posts to your views and interests, Facebook has an alarming tendency to silo its users into separate, ideology-driven realities where they're seldom exposed to people with a disagreeing opinions. Read more...

8 quotes from Trump's New York Times interview that are Trump AF

Donald Trump is still totally Donald Trump.

Oh, sure, he's preaching a message of bringing a divided America together. And he knows how to put on a good show. But at the end of the day, he's still Donald Trump.

Two weeks removed, he's already backtracked on one of his biggest — and most incendiary — promises of the campaign: seeking charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server.

But there's more to it than that and Trump flashed that same mix of inconsistency and bombast when he sat down yesterday with the New York Times for one of his only major, on-the-record interviews since winning the election.  Read more...

Chrissy Teigen once again shuts down Twitter trolls

By now, anyone who tries to come for Chrissy Teigen should know the drill—you will be swiftly defanged, whether you're a mommy shamer or mock North West's fashion passion

Haters have spewed their unsolicited thoughts about the model left and right on social media. And while conducting a question and answer session about Thanksgiving, the trolls managed to sneak in a few inappropriate questions which she responded to in classic Teigen fashion.

One user named Alivia commented on Teigen's revealing number at the 2016 American Music Awards ("apologies to anyone harmed mentally or physically by my hooha," Teigen wront on Instagram in response to criticism of the dress).  Read more...

Jill Stein wants you to give her $2.5 million, to contest the 2016 election results

If Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein can raise around $2 million by Friday afternoon, the United States may have a vote recount on its hands.

Stein's campaign announced Wednesday via its website that they're trying to raise enough money to contest and recount the presidential election results in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, all of which show thin margins between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Trump has been declared the winner in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, while Michigan remains too close to call.

"After seeing compelling evidence of voting anomalies, the Stein/Baraka Green Party Campaign is launching an effort to ensure the integrity of our elections," the campaign wrote, on a website funding page. "With your help, we are raising money to demand recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania—three states where the data suggests significant discrepancies in vote totals." Read more...

The Colts punter asked Antonio Brown, kindly, not to kick him in the face on Thanksgiving

Colts punter Pat McAfee has a simple request for Antonio Brown this week: Don't kick him in the face while his mom is watching. Please.

The Colts and Steelers will face off in a Thanksgiving Day matchup on Thursday, and McAfee is hoping Brown — the Steelers wide receiver — won't repeat what he did to one unlucky punter two years ago.

Brown tried to jump over Cleveland punter Spencer Lanning in 2014, but kicked him straight in the face instead.

7 awful Black Friday tech 'deals' you need to avoid

When it comes to holiday shopping and Black Friday deals, it's important to remember one thing: just because something is discounted doesn't automatically make it worth buying.

Buying something at reduced cost feels like winning a contest or gaming the system — that's by design. There's a reason bargain shopping is so addicting: the anticipation of finding a killer deal actually pumps the brain full of dopamine.

Retailers take every measure possible to capitalize on that rush and turn the thrill of the hunt into the satisfaction of the purchase (ideally purchases, plural). In the attempt to catch deal-crazed consumers, though, they offer some bogus discounts.  Read more...

This New York City museum is opening an exhibit dedicated to 'Om'

"Ohhhmmmmm."

The Sanskrit syllable recited by Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and followers of Jainism around the world will be at the center of an immersive sensory experience at a museum in New York City in February.

The Rubin Museum of Art will transform its sixth floor into a participatory exhibit called the "Om Lab." Visitors will be able to record their own chant of the sacred syllable inside recording booths, with these sounds later layered, remixed and compiled into a single chant that will be played during the museum's "The World Is Sound" exhibit in June, according to a statement from the museum. Cyclists love Thanksgiving so much they ride 50 miles in the shape of a turkey

San Francisco is known for its winding roads – and apparently, those winding roads make for quite the festive bike route.

Every year around Thanksgiving, bikers complete the 50-mile Turkey Ride in San Francisco. If cyclists track their path on their phones, an image of a turkey wearing a pilgrim hat appears.

Redditor GoatLegSF shared an image of one biker's route in the San Francisco subreddit.

He explained how riders nail the route.

"The guy who routed it has it all on a map with arrows for turns and such. It's a lot of stopping and checking the map so we don't miss parts," he said. "But you'll notice the upper left corner of the hat was slightly overlooked, so it's not tapered like the right side. There's a lot of riding over the same parts too, especially by the tail feathers and the hat (which happens to be the steeper parts)." Read more...

Verizon's Black Friday deals include lowest price yet for Google Pixel

We're still not sure if Apple's surprise entry into the Black Friday sales season will result in manufacturer discounts to the iPhone 7, but its newest challenger will be part of a major promotion sure to catch the eye of anyone considering a switch.

Verizon's recently announced Black Friday promotion isn't extensive, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in quality. Google quality, to be specific.

Verizon will be debuting Google Home at a special price of $99.99 through Nov. 28 — the same discount from $129 Google itself teased earlier in the season. But there's a catch: it appears that the Verizon discount only applies to in-store purchases. Read more...

Fitbit's Charge 2 takes fitness tracking to the next level

When it comes to wearables, your choices primarily fall into two buckets: smartwatches that have fitness tracking features and fitness trackers that also have smartwatch-style notifications.

Fitbit's new Charge 2 falls squarely in the latter group. It's all about fitness, though its notifications are a useful addition. While few wearables manage to do both well, the Charge 2 strikes the right balance, if fitness-first features are what you're after.

Less is more

Image: karissa bell/mashable

One of the $149.95 Charge 2's most noticeable changes, compared with previous generations of the Charge line, is the slimmed-down design. Though the display itself is bigger and has a slightly higher profile than some smartwatches, the band is thinner and feels less bulky overall.  Read more...

"It's like Oceans 11 but in a fantasy world with young people and magic." She also recommends Diary of Anne Frank "to make sure you're thinking about the world in a historical sense."

  • MJ recommends reading The New York Time Magazine's story "The Last Taboo" by Wesley Morris, which explores black male sexuality by looking at the way black penises have been depicted in pop culture. Now we know what caused Europe's Mars lander to crash

The European Space Agency (ESA) finally has a better idea of what caused its ill-fated Mars lander to crash-land on the Red Planet in October.

It looks like the Schiaparelli lander — part of the joint alien life-hunting ExoMars mission between the ESA and Russia — crashed into the surface of Mars due to a glitch in its navigation system.

The ins and outs of the issue that doomed that lander are complicated, but basically, as Schiaparelli was coming in for touchdown its navigation computer miscalculated its altitude, leading the onboard computer to think that the lander was already safe and on the ground.  Read more...

Teen arrested for 'coke' in Bali was carrying crushed painkillers all along

An 18-year-old teenager detained in Bali, Indonesia, has been released after a bag of drugs he allegedly possessed was found to contain only crushed painkillers.

Australian school leaver Daniel Murphy, was held in police custody for two days after security at Kuta's Sky Garden nightclub claimed they caught him with a bag of white powder early on Tuesday morning, according to ABC News.

Police suspected it was cocaine, but Murphy had no traces of drugs in his blood or urine. Tests of the white powder showed it was a mix of painkillers, cold medication and caffeine.

His grandmother was born in an area which eventually became Pakistan, shawnwasim wrote on Reddit, adding that some Christian families did celebrate the holiday, but not in a grandiose way.

"There were Christian families who celebrated Christmas there but it was pretty hidden and not nearly as festive as the ones in Christian-majority countries like the US. Kicking off the evening's exceptional acceptance speakers was one Angie Greene, who accepted the award for Best Female Artist on behalf of the enigmatic talent powerhouse Sia.

Sia sent Greene, the founder of an organisation that raises awareness for gender inequality in sport, to accept the award with a powerful message for the marriage equality movement in Australia. Australia is the last remaining developed, English-speaking country in the world that has not made same-sex marriage legal, and Greene's impassioned words had the crowd applauding and cheering more rapturously than any of the music acts that graced the same stage. Watch Kevin Love score a ridiculous 34 points in a single quarter

Kevin Love has been the third wheel on Cleveland's "Big Three" since joining the team in 2014.

On Wednesday night, however, he took the spotlight from LeBron James and Kyrie Irving by scoring 34 points in the first quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers.

That's the second-most points scored in a quarter in NBA history, trailing only Klay Thompson's historic performance from last season.

"That was lightning," James said after the game, according to ESPN. "We just kept giving him the ball and he kept knocking them down."

In case you're wondering, next on the list are George Gervin and Carmelo Anthony, who have both scored 33 in a quarter.  Read more...

PM Narendra Modi says everyone on Narendra Modi app is happy with demonetization

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the vast majority of people who took part in a survey this week (via his app), have expressed support for the government’s demonetisation move

On Tuesday, Modi asked Indians what they thought of the invalidation of most circulated currency notes. The app quickly became a talking point among many, with him trending on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play

Modi said the survey received an "unprecedented response" with over half a million citizens sharing their views in roughly 24 hours. More than 90 percent of respondents, according to the findings, gave the government a "4-star-rating" for its efforts to get rid of black money (unaccounted for cash). 73 percent of those people gave it a 5-star rating.  Read more...

'First Alien: Covenant' poster is unexpectedly chilling

In between Ridley Scott's original Alien movie and its sequels, and the recent Prometheus prequel which doesn't really feature the creature from Alien, lies Scott's new movie, Alien: Covenant

Not much is known about the movie, but if you're wondering whether it's more of a sequel to Prometheus or a prequel to Alien, the movie's first poster should give at least a partial answer (and scare you at the same time).

Facebook's internet beaming drone Aquila is not headed to India

Facebook is committed at bringing internet access to much of India, but the social giant won’t be using its Aquila drone to achieve it in the country.

The high-altitude, solar-powered unmanned drone, designed to beam internet to remote parts of the world, isn’t headed to India, Umang Bedi, Managing Director, for Facebook in India and South Asia noted at a round table discussion on Wednesday.

"Aquila is one of our connectivity efforts, which I think, is an experiment for the US only. It’s got nothing to do with India; there was some speculation, but that was speculation only,” Bedi told FactorDaily, refuting claims made in a recent media report.  Read more...

The LingLong DingDong is a Chinese-speaking Amazon Echo

If you're deciding between the Amazon Echo and the Google Home, there's a new contender: the DingDong, from Chinese manufacturer LingLong.

Its latest digital home assistant model, the A3, looks pretty similar to the Echo — it's a cylindrical speaker that will respond to users asking for information such as the weather or their schedule.

It can play music, or help you take notes and control your home appliances — pretty much whatever internet-connected system it can talk to.

And in typical Chinese fashion, it's priced very competitively at 698 yuan ($100), while adding new features like portability — it's able to play up to eight hours of music on the go. Read more...

Gravity can light the world with this new technology

What’s a bag of rocks and a downward force good for? Lighting the world, of course.

Creating a future that’s bright and safe for all is at the heart of GravityLight – the lamp that’s lighting areas of the world with limited access to electricity using the power of (you guessed it) gravity. As the 2015 winner of Shell’s Springboard programme, GravityLight is a gravity (there’s that word again) powered lamp designed by Deciwatt to provide a safer, cleaner alternative to the dangerous kerosene lamps which are common in the developing world.

Did you know that as of 2015 1.1 billion people are still without access to energy?  For many of these people the only affordable solution to their lack of access has been kerosene lamps which are harmful to their health. In fact, studies have shown that inhaling the toxic fumes from kerosene lamps is the equivalent of smoking 170 cigarettes per year; unintentional ingestion of kerosene is the leading cause of child poisoning in the developing world . Beyond respiratory issues, the danger these lamps pose to the societies they light are plenty – in India alone the WHO estimates that one million people each and every year suffer moderate to severe burns caused by overturned kerosene lamps. Uber eyes UberCommute expansion in India

Uber plans to expand its UberCommute service across India, but the path it is hoping to travel is likely more complicated than it is anticipating.

How millennials give for the holidays: Donating online and buying cool shoes

Millennials are known for selfies, Snapchat filters, reality television and — charitable donations? Yes, the generation with a reputation for self-centeredness and instant gratification apparently also exhibits philanthropic tendencies.

In light of the holiday season — and with Giving Tuesday (the annual post-Cyber Monday day of charity) just about a week away — we took a look at how and why millennials like to give.

Millennial giving for good

Derrick Feldmann is the lead researcher for the Millennial Impact Project and author of “Social Movements for Good.” He says millennials (those ages 18 to 34 in 2015, according to the Pew Research Center) like to give and are empowered by empathy. What is behind the turkey pardoning ritual?

Since 1989, when President George H. W. Bush first formally institutedthe practice, U.S. presidents have pardoned a turkey shortly before Thanksgiving each year.

Although the turkeys offer no offense, their presidential pardoning invites the question: What is the significance of such a public rite of forgiveness?

As a researcher of the history of race and religion, I have long been interested in the ideas and ceremonies that make forgiveness possible. The presidential turkey pardon draws on the long traditions of forgiveness in the world’s religions. A very public act of pardoning, as in this case, reminds us about the important role rituals themselves play in society. Read more...

Women have always lived longer than men, study says

Men still aren't living as long as women — and that holds true for humans' primate cousins as well, a new study shows.

In the study, researchers looked at data from six populations of humans from both modern and historical times, in different countries. The investigators found that, "in spite of the huge gains in human longevity over the past century, the male-female difference has not shrunk," said Susan Alberts, a professor of biology at Duke University and a co-author of the new study.

The researchers did find that the the amount by which women outlived men varied across populations. For instance, the largest male-female difference in life span among the populations studied was in modern-day Russia, where the gap is approximately 10 years. Much smaller differences were found in other populations such as people living in modern-day Nigeria and India.  Read more...

'Gilmore Girls': Taylor Swift songs are all about Dean, Jess and Logan

They tell all young artists one thing: Write what you know. In the early days, teen Taylor Swift had little experience with heartbreak, which would become the basis of most of her musical work. She drew inspiration in the beginning from fiction and film.
