Forget Black Friday. California hopes #GreenFriday will catch on.

Come Nov. 25, California State Department of Parks and Recreation officials are hoping that the state's residents and visitors will be feeling green. The Save the Redwoods League, California State Parks and the California State Parks Foundation are teaming up to provide first-come, first-serve free passes to 116 of the Sunshine State's 280 state parks for a "#GreenFriday" event.

It's not uncommon for those in charge of public utilities to want the people who actually form the public to enjoy the fruits of their tax dollars. In this case, it's the day and size of the promotion that makes the focus so intense.  Read more...

That confirmation amounts to a vote of confidence in Blizzard's new league. If Overwatch League is to be sustainable, it's going to need the involvement of established teams.  Read more...

A new study by Food Democracy Now! found that 29 treats tested in a lab showed levels of glyphosate between 8.02 and 1,123.5 parts per billion.

Should this worry consumers?

Food Democracy Now! and bloggers like FoodBabe will tell you yes, drop those Cool Ranch Doritos immediately, because they could give you cancer.

White nationalists: Not handling their Twitter apocalypse well

Several prominent members of the "alt-right" were banned from the platform on Tuesday, including Richard Spencer, whom some consider to be the "father" of the internet-savvy white nationalist movement.

"The thing that really gets me is that they think they're banning the alt-right," Sven Sontag of the white nationalist, anti-Semitic website TheRightStuff.biz told Mashable in an email. "Our people are going to be in the next administration, in the next Congress. Twitter CEO apologizes for white supremacy ad

Twitter's crackdown on hate speech isn't turning out to be easy. CEO Jack Dorsey apologized Thursday after the microblogging site hosted an ad that promoted a white supremacy group earlier this week.

The promoted tweet, spotted by Twitter user Ariana Lenarsky Tuesday and surfaced by Motherboard Wednesday, linked to an article titled "The United States Was Founded as a White People's Republic" on the website of the New Order, a Neo-Nazi group. It was paid for by the account @New_Order_1488.

We made a mistake here and we apologize. Our automated system allowed an ad promoting hate. Against our policy. We did a retro and fixed! https://t.co/7gvycmzpsm

Apple celebrates the march of technology in grandiose new ad

Apple is introducing the latest iteration of its MacBook Pro with a history lesson.

The Cupertino company's new, high concept ad campaign traces the thread of human innovation from the advent of the wheel to the first locomotive all the way through drones and robots.

That progress is juxtaposed with a miles-long symbolic chain of lightbulbs that explodes in a visual reminiscent of falling dominos.

The campaign seems to be a bid to reinforce Apple's forward-thinking spirit as some Wall Street investors and critics worry that Apple's product pipeline is losing its innovative edge Read more...

This cheap, folding helmet is exactly what bike-sharing programs need

This folding helmet might be the ultimate accessory for bike-sharing programs. It's made of paper, lightweight, collapsible (and thus easy to carry) and cheap to produce.

Paper isn't exactly known for being protective, but the EcoHelmet hopes to challenge that perception with this helmet's design. As recipients of the 2016 award, the product has officially made believers out of British tech giant, Dyson.

The accordion-like fold is ideal for travel

Image: dyson

The helmet, which received the top prize in Dyson's 2016 design contest, unfolds to stretch out the "honeycomb" lattice, which makes is sturdy enough to protect your precious noggin. It's made from recycled paper, which both justifies the "eco" part of its name and keeps production costs so low that the helmet could be sold for less than $5 apiece. Read more...

Soothe your broken heart with a vintage 'Bizarre Love Triangle' cover

It's Thursday, which means it's Postmodern Jukebox Video Day.

Today's PMJ cover is of New Order's '80s punk rock song "Bizarre Love Triangle" sung in the style of Burt Bacharach. Bacharach is known for songs including "Wishin' and Hopin' " and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," as well as the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. So basically, this cover sounds absolutely nothing like New Order's original.

Vocally, Sarah Marie Young's seamlessly transitions from light and dainty to a belt-y powerhouse delivering lyrics that will probably haunt you for the rest of the week.

The latest 'Survivor' castaway owns his villain role

There's no denying that Taylor Lee Stock played the game of Survivor on his own terms.

The frequently goofy scoundrel and one half of the now-defunct "FigTayls" power couple had his torched snuffed at the end of the latest episode. It was an expected outcome, and a distinct shift away from the surprises of recent weeks.

Ultimately, Taylor's all-in game is what did him in. He was a fierce challenge competitor and he buoyed tribemates with his unflappable spirit, but strategic miscalculations (FigTayls) and mischievous behavior (overeating and stealing food) are hard to forgive in a game like Survivor. Read more...

News anchor attempts to draw a cannon, draws something NSFW instead

When we're lucky, live television produces some hilarious gems.

On Wednesday morning, Seattle news anchor Kaci Aitchison was in the middle of a seemingly innocent game of Google AI's new game, "Quick, Draw!" when things went awry.

Aitchison was tasked with the word, "cannon," and though she gave it her best effort, she ended up with something quite different. And something quite NSFW. She attempted to alter the drawing which only added to the hilarity of this unfortunate situation, causing her colleagues to erupt with laughter. Read more...

New Broadway musical sucks you deep into the internet

A new Broadway show is attempting to smash down the barriers between reality and fiction by using technology.

Dear Evan Hansen, a Broadway show by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Steven Levenson, is one of the first major musicals to incorporate social media on and off stage. During the show, the IRL audience is overwhelmed with social media feeds, Microsoft documents, email exchanges, Kickstarter petitions and this immersive push continues off stage with livestreams on Periscope.

The integration of social media into this particular Broadway show makes a lot of sense. Not only does it help tap into a younger audience demographic, it also matches the underlying themes in Dear Evan Hansen, such as isolation in the internet age and the dangers of anonymity online. Read more...

Amazon Prime Video launches in Australia, in a manner of speaking

Amazon has entered the video on demand (VOD) arms race in Australia, but the web giant hasn't made much of a fuss about it.

Amazon Prime Video was quietly launched to Australian users, ahead of the launch of The Grand Tour — featuring Top Gear defectors Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. We're sure "Holdenman3000" would be pleased.

But "launched" might be too strong of a word, because the service isn't available to those Down Under in the traditional, all-encompassing sense.

The folks over at EFTM caught wind of the fact that that VOD service was accessing to Australian addresses on Thursday.  Read more...

'Rogue One' and VR come to 'Star Wars: Battlefront' next month

More digital action figures and playsets are coming to Star Wars: Battlefront very soon.

The PlayStation VR-exclusive "X-Wing VR Mission," based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be out on Dec. 6. It's free for anyone that owns PSVR and Battlefront for PS4, so ... you know ... get on that. Flying an X-Wing in VR seems like an excellent idea.

There's plenty of Rogue One to go around for non-VR people as well, with Rogue One: Scarif. The fourth and final Battlefront add-on brings four new maps and two new heroes — Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic — inspired by the Dec. 16 movie. It also introduces a new mode that blends ground and space combat into a nostalgia-inducing eye candy stew. Read more...

We need to talk about Cam Newton's fox tail cleats

The Cam Newton football fashion guide just reached a new level of flamboyance.

Newton — the Carolina Panthers quarterback known for his extravagant style — showed up to warm-ups for Thursday Night Football in true form, with fox tails dangling from his already flashy cleats.

Though the NFL has made a habit enforcing its uniform policy this year, players have started switching shoes before the game starts to dodge fines.

Alt-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos gets schooled on live TV

The millennial mascot of the alt-right was forced into a confusing set of contradictions Thursday on live television.

Breitbart News writer Milo Yiannopoulos was interviewed by Channel 4 News in the UK about his past statements that women offended online should just "log off" the internet and his assertion that, actually, Islam is the real culprit of rape culture.

When journalist Cathy Newman challenged him on the empty and unsettling claim that Muslim immigration is somehow linked to rape culture, Yiannopoulos retorted with just, "Am I wrong about that?"

Musician blasts racism in speech, after receiving 'brown people' award

New Zealand RnB artist Aaradhna doesn't want your ignorantly-labelled award.

Aaradhna Jayantilal Patel was awarded the Best Album in the Urban and Hip Hop category at Grammy Awards equivalent Thursday, for her album Brown Girl. Problem is, she's not a hip hop artist; she's a soul singer.

But upon taking the podium, the artist drew attention to the fact that she was being put in a box based on race — declining the award and giving it to her well-deserving nominees, Swidt.

"So this song is 'Brown Girl' and it speaks on many things. It speaks on racism and being placed in a box and for me, I feel like if I was to accept this, I would feel like I'm not being truthful in my song," Aaradhna told the crowd.  Read more...

Boy who wrote touching letter to child war victim melts our hearts again

We all can learn a lot from Alex, the 6-year-old who melted hearts when he opened his home to a child war victim, said President Barack Obama as he met the boy at the White House.

Alex's letter to Obama was shared over and over again online in September and inspired the president to quote the young New Yorker during a speech at the Leaders Summit on Refugees later that month. Last week, Alex put on a new suit and visited Obama in Washington. The White House released an Instagram video of the meeting Thursday encouraging viewers to support refugee causes.

Eagles are waging war against drones, knocking them out of the sky

While we all look forward to the prospect of pizza being delivered by drones, not everyone is loving the flying gadgets. Birds of prey don't particularly like them. At all.

Surveyor Rick Steven, has had to contend with some angsty local eagles while flying his unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the St Ives mine, located in Western Australia's Goldfields region.

In short, they're destroying them, and it's forcing Steven to get inventive.

The UAVs have assisted Steven in creating 3D models of mined areas, as well as helping workers avoid extreme weather conditions on surveys.  Read more...

'Patriots Day' is a heartbreaking thriller that America needs right now

They say “home is where the heart is,” and I’ve always been proud to be from Boston, a city rich with history and resilience. But the truth is that my heart never really knew my home or the strength of its people until the events of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which united a community and brought out the best in everyone — first responders, medical professionals and especially local law enforcement officials.

Along with the dead and the wounded, these are the people to whom Peter Berg’s harrowing fact-based thriller Patriots Day is dedicated, and they also embody its message. In the face of unspeakable tragedy, the people of Boston came together. They were Boston Strong. And that's why Patriots Day is exactly the movie that America needs right now, in the wake of this year's divisive election and numerous incidents of unwarranted police violence. Read more...

Crows are now acting like magpies and attacking people in Australia

Australians spend a large part of their spring trying to avoid being mercilessly swooped by magpies, and now crows are getting in on the act.

Crows are notoriously intelligent and largely avoid humans out of fear, but if behavioural changes over the last 10 years are anything to go by, the super-brained devils of the sky are abandoning their fear. And they never forget a face.

It was when ecologist Darryl Jones of Australia's Griffith University saw a crow make a nest outside his office — the first known instance of one made on a human structure — that realised he might be witnessing symptoms of a mini-evolution. Read more...

But two years after entering Singapore, it seems London-based Hailo has given up on its Asian expansion, local papers report.

SMRT's fleet is far smaller than the dominant ComfortDelGro company though, which has around half of the country's entire taxis.

Elon Musk says Tesla's solar roof will be cheaper than a regular roof

When he unveiled Tesla and SolarCity's upcoming product in October, a solar roof that generates electricity but looks pretty much like a regular roof, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the roof would cost less than a regular roof — if you count in the savings from the roof's energy generation.

While that's perfectly OK for those thinking long-term, if the solar roof's upfront cost were much bigger than the cost of a regular roof, that would probably deter some customers from going solar.

Now, however, Musk claims the solar roof will cost less to manufacture and install than a non-solar roof, even without the electricity savings.  Read more...

In the clip, a group of beachgoers in Merimbula, Australia can be seen watching a seal doing a little bit of fishing in the shallow waters next to shore. After a few moments the seal finally catches its lunch.

At that moment, the seal walks toward the shoreline and notices that a fisherman is a little too close to its meal, so it charges the stunned man who falls trying to escape. Thankfully, the seal retreats to the water as a land dog comes to the man's rescue.

Although the clip was first released in March, it's just starting to gain some traction online after someone uploaded the clip to YouTube. Read more...

Donald Trump writes misleading tweet, but that's not the scary part

Every president needs a fact-checker — perhaps none more than President-elect Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Trump went on Twitter and claimed that, thanks to his advocacy, Ford would no longer be moving its plant to Kentucky. His claim was later challenged by established media outlets (The Washington Post, The New York Times) but not before it was shared elsewhere under misleading headlines (as in The Washington Examiner) and on conservative fake news sites everywhere.

In the tweet, Trump claimed credit for helping to keep a Ford plant in the United States.: Read more...

'Overwatch' is more than 40% off in online retailer sales

Ahead of the sale-heavy madness of Black Friday, Overwatch has been marked down $25 by a handful of major online retailers.

Overwatch: Origins Edition (which includes extra hero skins and items for other Blizzard games) is on sale for $35 — regularly $60 — on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One through Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop and more. The standard edition of Overwatch costs $40, so this saves $5 off the standard price and gives players extra goodies.

The sale appears to only apply for boxed versions of the game, not digital codes.

Along with this sale, which may end at any time, Overwatch has a free trial weekend for anyone interested in trying it out. The free weekend is running from Nov. 18 to 21 on all three platforms. Read more...

'Overwatch' EnVyUs player Talespin exits team mid-tournament

Team EnVyUs is left one man down in the wake of Overwatch player Ronnie "Talespin" DuPree's sudden departure. EnVyUs must replace DuPree before their match against Rogue in the $200,000 OGN Apex tournament on Monday.

During an update from EnVyUs rep Kat "Mystic" Gunn, it was noted that DuPree would be leaving the team to "pursue opportunities outside of gaming." DuPree had other plans, however, noting on TwitLonger that he "will not be quitting Overwatch" but keeping his options open.

In his statement, DuPree had nothing but positive things to say about EnVyUs's management and most of his fellow teammates.  Read more...

Kanye West basically outlined his 2020 presidential platform last night

He keeps threatening to run, but what exactly would a Kanye West 2020 presidential campaign look like?

On Thursday night, during a tour stop in San Jose, California, West pulled out a few more surprises in his continuing political saga. #CalExit: The California Secession Movement is real, and could work

As is the case in so many other parts of America, thousands of California residents are protesting the 2016 election results. The difference? Their frustration has swelled into support for perhaps the ultimate solution to the Golden State's strong distaste for president-elect Donald Trump—secession.

The idea of a #Calexit blew up on Twitter right after Trump's win. It started as a series of jokes—Tweets about the state's best-known exports, of sorts (from Apple devices to weed), along with maps and memes showing what an independent California would look like. Read more...

Muslim man verbally harassed in Starbucks shares harrowing experience online

Racism ran rampant at a Starbucks in Midtown Manhattan earlier this week.

On Tuesday, 22-year-old photojournalist, Mohammed Elshamy and his friend were meeting for coffee when they were allegedly verbally harassed by a white woman in the shop because of their race.

Elshamy told Mashable the incident lasted nearly 10 minutes. The following day, he was still shaken up by the comments that were made and decided to share his negative encounter online with over 11,000 Facebook followers.

Harlem Globetrotters break 9 world records with incredible trick shots

The Harlem Globetrotters are a roundabout group of playground basketball legends who rode on-court, circus-like tricks to international fame. On Thursday, they did what they do best: Break world records with absurd trick shots.

Thursday marked Guinness World Records day, when people across the world made their bid at the history books.

The Globetrotters, an exhibition team more rooted in entertainment than wins and losses, set seven world records in 2015. 6 burning questions we have after viewing 'Fantastic Beasts'

Spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them below

NEW YORK — There was a time when you couldn't bring up Harry Potter without a hardcore fan picking up the frequency and jumping in to talk theories (me. It was me), and Fantastic Beasts has unleashed the madness once again.

Below are all our burning questions and theories after our first viewing of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

1. Was Ariana Dumbledore an Obscurus?

Newt describes an Obscurus as a child whose magical ability is repressed. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore's brother says that their little sister couldn't control her magic after an encounter with local Muggles. Their mother kept her locked away and said she was ill, but she never made it to Hogwarts. Did she go full Dark Phoenix like Credence did in the film? Read more...

Film noir, Nancy Drew and the evolution of the aesthetics of mystery

A kitchen cleaver tucked into the belt of a trench-coat-cloaked figure. A seductive woman with blood red lipstick, eyes concealed in shadow by a wide-brimmed hat. A gape-mouthed young girl staring at something just beyond the camera's line of sight, terror visible in her eyes.

All these images conjure an air of mystery, which is probably why the covers of paperback novels and DVD covers have donned such stylistic choices for years.

For mystery buffs, it's fascinating to investigate how the aesthetics of the genre have evolved over time, from the black and white scenes of the film noir era to illustrated book covers to modern movie trailers. TBS's new show, Search Party, employs some of these same, time-tested elements and aesthetics in order to tell a compelling tale of twists and turns. Die-hard mystery fans will want to binge watch the show on 11/21. Read more...
