You may have read or seen on social media a Washington Post story published Friday which claimed that Russian hackers had hacked the U.S. power system via an electrical grid in Vermont. That’s not what happened and the incident is not necessarily connected to the alleged Russian hack of the Democratic National Committee. The Washington Post has since amended its story: What actually happened is that a single laptop belonging to the Burlington Electric utility was found to be infected with malware—software intended to damage or disable computer systems— that originated in Russia. Trump's brilliant cybersecurity solution is to send messages by courier
President-elect Donald Trump has a brilliant solution to our country's cybersecurity problems. No, it's not to condemn Russia for hacking the Democratic National Committee. It's turning back the clock to a simpler time, before these newfangled computers messed everything up. Speaking to reporters on Saturday while in Florida to celebrate New Year's Eve, the president-elect, per the press pool report, said: "It's very important, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old fashioned way because I'll tell you what, no computer is safe. I don't care what they say, no computer is safe. I have a boy who's ten years old, he can do anything with a computer. As much as we've all bemoaned 2016 as a rough year, no one was probably as happy to be done with it as superstar Mariah Carey after some technical glitches caused her performance on Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve to descend into chaos and awkwardness. Things got off to a rough start as Carey seemed lost when her hit song "Emotion" started playing, telling her back-up dancers to "just walk me down" and saying "Well, Happy New Year." And it went downhill from there. Carey said, "We can't hear," and then just seemed to... give up. "I say let the audience sing," Carey helplessly offered, holding the mic out to fans while she awkwardly strutted the stage. Read more... The holidays are meant to be a time of celebration with family. Yet not all is well in the world, particularly in the Syrian city of Aleppo, where brutal ongoing conflict between government and rebel forces has forced thousands of families to flee. For many who've made their way to humanitarian camps, the winter cold is proving quite the challenge for aid workers helping refugees find shelter. So Australia for UNHCR, which helps to fundraise for the refugee agency, is currently raising money for this effort with its Nobody Left Outside campaign. "Icy conditions are a major challenge now; we recently had the first snowfalls," Firas Al-Khateeb a Syrian field worker with UNHCR, told Mashable via email. Read more... Mariah Carey wasn't the only one who had a super weird New Year's Eve as CNN's celebrity llama reporter Don Lemon got his ear pierced and got real about 2016 during the network's annual televised New Year's celebration. In an effort to liven up the affair, CNN, in its infinite wisdom, sent Lemon and Brooke Baldwin to New Orleans to ring in the New Year. And, well, Lemon made the most of it.
