Breaking this Guinness world record looks like one massive headache

How is this even possible?

Giang Quoc Nghiep and Giang Quoc Co, two brothers from Vietnam, absolutely demolished the Guinness World Record for — wait for it — most consecutive stairs climbed while balancing a person on the head. To do so, they ascended the 90 steps of Saint Mary's Cathedral in Girona, Spain, in just 52 seconds.

In this video posted by Guinness World Records, one brother is literally upside down, head-to-head on top of the other brother, showing all of us regular stair-walkers who's boss.

Think of them fondly next time you get winded walking up to your apartment.

Beleaguered kid picks perfect book quote to write in his diary

There's no better tool to get us through difficult times than a classic work of literature.

For one second grader, that work is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which chronicles the journey of young Greg Heffley as he bumbles his way through middle school.

Is it troubling that this small child already has the angst of a teen? Maybe, but it also means he has a wonderful secret diary, an excerpt from which was published by his parent, Redditor Effex, on Reddit Wednesday.

Replace "2nd grade" with middle school, and it's a direct quote from Wimpy Kid. But that's okay — this little guy clearly has great taste in books, and besides, you can write whatever the hell you want in your own diary. Read more...

A 'Breaking Bad' villain returns in perfect 'Better Call Saul' promo

Gus Fring is back and making everything creepier as usual.

TVLine debuted a new promo for Better Call Saul Wednesday, and it's a chilling chicken commercial for Los Pollos Hermanos.

In this "Taste the family" ad, a robotically smiling Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and his employees welcome happy families into their fast food restaurant that fronts a drug empire. Knowing Gus, it would hardly be a surprise to learn that Pollos was in fact serving human flesh.

Fring's return was teased in Saul's Season 2 finale and Esposito appearing in this sinisterly sweet ad confirms it. We know how Gus met Walter White and how their professional relationship ended on Breaking Bad, but what business did Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) have with Fring's franchise before? Read more...

Joyful dog has absolutely no trouble dancing for his dinner

"Tobey is a 6-month-old Havanese and he's a real swell guy," this dog's owner wrote on a YouTube video detailing the pup getting ready for dinner. But he is so much more than that.

For one thing, 6 p.m. holds a very special place in his heart. A spring-loaded place, really. A place where, if he had a trampoline, there would be a 6-month-old Havanese in the atmosphere.

Silently, joyfully, when it's dinner time, Tobey shows his excitement by leaping into the air towards the stars.

Enjoy every kibble, Tobey.

Your selfies might be leaving you vulnerable to hackers

If flashing a peace sign is your go-to selfie move, you might want to think about coming up with a new signature look. Turns out, your light-hearted display of goodwill to the world could be putting your personal data at risk — if you come across a truly determined hacker, anyway.

According to research from a team at Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII), cyber thieves can lift your fingerprints from a photo in order to access your biometrically protected data (like the info secured on your iPhone by the Touch ID system). But while it's technically possible, biometrics experts say there's no need to panic. Read more...

Hidden peat swamp in Central Africa stores 30 billion tons of carbon

A vast swamp forest in Central Africa contains enough carbon to equal two decades' worth of U.S. fossil fuel emissions, scientists have found.

The Congo Basin peatland — an area larger than New York State — has accumulated around 30 billion metric tons of carbon over the last 11,000 years, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The discovery makes the fate of this vast carbon sink an important consideration for climate projections and land conservationists.

A team of U.K. and Congolese researchers spent three years roaming the Cuvette Centrale peatland to find samples of peat to test in their labs. They also analyzed satellite data to estimate the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Read more...

Duke's disgraced Grayson Allen is the college basketball villain we need and deserve

Is Duke star Grayson Allen just trolling us now?

Because this is getting ridiculous. College basketball's most notorious villain either can't stop, or won't stop, or we're all going crazy.

Allen's "indefinite suspension" for tripping opponents over and over again was cut laughably short last week after lasting just one game, which Duke lost. Allen has played in three contests since returning — and in two of those he's gotten tangled up in plays that look mighty suspect for someone with his record.

As much as fans complain and criticize, sports villains are fun. They're an essential part of the mythological landscape that we construct around silly games and then populate with heroes, antiheroes and bad guys.  Read more...

Donald Trump's chilling message to media: You're with me or you're against me

Candy bandit squirrel finally gets caught in the act

Is it just us, or do squirrels just seem to get away with everything these days?

The Kim family suspected some mischief was afoot in their Toronto convenience store, Luke's Grocery, when they heard a bit of rustling near the candy bars. After some investigation, they had found the culprit: squirrels. Little candy-thieving squirrels.

On this Youtube page (hilariously named StopThatSquirrel DropThatBar), the Kim family posted this video of a squirrel waltzing into the store like it owns the place, snatching the candy bar and running the hell out of there before it gets caught.

Apparently, this is not the first candy caper of its kind the family experience. The family estimates that it has lost at least 40 candy bars to squirrels over the years. Read more...

Variety characterized the negotiations as being in "early talks," so we're probably a long ways from confirmation, and there are no details on what character Dinklage might play.

It seems extremely unlikely that he would reprise his role as Boliver Trask from X-Men: Days of Future Past — though it's technically a Marvel property, the X-Men films belong to Fox, which so far hasn't shared characters with Disney/Marvel (a la Sony for Spider-Man: Homecoming). Read more...

Village Roadshow CEO: Expect more site-blocking cases 'big time'

According to Graham Burke, co-CEO of Village Roadshow, Australia should expect his company to continue going after piracy sites "big time."

After the Australian government passed a law in 2015 allowing copyright holders to petition for piracy websites to be blocked, Village Roadshow along with Foxtel, was the first to test the legislation in Federal Court.

In December, the pair won injunctions forcing internet service providers (ISPs) including Telstra and Optus to block the sites Solar Movie, Pirate Bay, Torrentz, TorrentHound and IsoHunt in Australia.

Burke told Mashable to expect further cases when the court resumes in February. While he declined to name which sites Village Roadshow will target, he said "There's a list as long as my arm." Read more...

The internet is freaking out over this gross 'medium rare' chicken recipe

The newest #cleaneating fad is here and it's...salmonella?

It is according to Australian Facebook user Morgan Jane Gibbs it is. She posted a photo of her raw chicken "recipe" to Facebook last week, and it's fair to say people had some thoughts about it.

Read it and weep.

Gibbs' tongue-in-cheek responses to comments on the post make it pretty apparent that her recipe wasn't meant to be a serious serving suggestion.

When warned that her #healthy meal was just a big ole dose of salmonella, Gibbs replied "its [sic] chicken not salmon?" Read more...

Cheeky quokka hops a boat to freedom and now everyone's looking for it

The humble and very adorable quokka is a creature only found on Western Australia's Rottnest Island, but it seems one has made an unlikely escape via barge.

An adult quokka was reportedly spotted at a waste recovery centre in the Perth suburb of Canning Vale on Jan 4. by a worker not familiar with the species.

The worker took a photo of it and thought it was a "big rat," according to the Western Suburbs Weekly.

The quokka is a protected species, due to a "vulnerable" conservation status, and authorities are trying to figure out if the animal is still in the centre or has made its way to surrounding bushland.  Read more...

These ski resorts are closed because there's just too much snow

Turns out you can have too much of a good thing.

The Lake Tahoe area on the California-Nevada border has been dumped with snow — perfect for the middle of prime skiing and snowboarding season.

But the storm affecting the western U.S. this week is just too much. And the Tahoe resorts just can't take it. It's beyond dumping (which is painfully ironic after barely any snow in past years) with another half-foot to a foot more of snow expected in the Sierra Nevada Mountains by Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Amazon fined $1 million for misrepresenting savings to customers in Canada

Amazon has agreed to pay a Canadian regulator $1 million to cap a two-year investigation into claims that the site misled customers about how much money they were saving.

The case concerned a sales tactic in which Amazon compared its own price on a given item to a higher "list price" to suggest a bargain.

But the probe by Canada's competition bureau found that those "list prices" came from Amazon's suppliers, and the e-commerce giant didn't bother to verify that they matched prevailing market rates.

Amazon has already taken steps to ensure that market prices listed on its Canadian site are now vetted, the group said. Read more...

Monkeys mourning the 'death' of a robot monkey will hit you right in the feels

Spy In The Wild is a new nature documentary shot almost entirely with hidden cameras disguised as robotic animals. Cool, huh?

But in an advance clip released by the BBC, that central gimmick backfires in the most heartbreaking way, when one of the primate robots is accidentally dropped and "killed" by a curious langur monkey.

The out of action cyborg is then mourned by its real-life friends, who gather round and hug each other while gazing upon the lifeless body of their "dead" baby langur monkey. It's brutal.

It's also as bizarre as it is sad — a weird mix of The Lion King and Blade Runner that's as affecting as it is downright odd and ethically quite problematic.  Read more...

Following on from their effort last year, Meat and Livestock Australia's new ad is all about celebrating diversity. But despite the landmark casting effort and message of goodwill, the advertisement misses the point for many.

It starts with a group of Indigenous Australians meeting on a beach for a barbecue, as boats from other countries gradually arrive, their diverse passengers enjoying the impromptu gathering. Read more...

Most of the coral in Japan's largest coral reef are dead, and the rest are dying

Japan has reported an alarming rate of death in its largest coral reef.

The environment ministry says that 70 percent of the coral at Sekiseishoko, off Okinawa, is dead.

91.4 percent of the coral in the largest reef in the Northern Hemisphere has also been bleached due to warm temperatures — meaning they're vulnerable and very likely to die, as well.

How the face of MLB's steroid era is getting closer to the Hall of Fame

It's only been a few days since they shared glorious proof of their BFF status on Instagram, and now they've had yet another adorable social media interaction.

This time, it started when one fan spotted a rogue caption on a photo of Williams included in an Entertainment Tonight Golden Globes red carpet slideshow: Read more...

Police say they can't remove videos of suicide streamed live on Facebook

Authorities in the U.S. state of Georgia have said they are powerless to remove copies of a Facebook Live video showing a girl killing herself.

Katelyn Nicole Davis, 12, recorded the footage in Cedartown.

Her family removed the video from her Facebook profile but copies of it were widely shared on blogs, YouTube and other Facebook accounts.

While YouTube took down the footage because it violated its policy on violent or graphic content, it was still present on Facebook.

Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd told Fox 5 they've been getting messages, emails and phone calls from around the world — even the UK — from people outraged about the video.  Read more...

Critics be damned, Apple's AirPods are dominating wireless headphone sales

Maybe people don't care that much about losing Apple's new AirPods.

In the days right before the holidays and in the weeks after, Apple AirPods sales have exploded, according to a new report from e-retail measurement company Slice Intelligence.

On the day AirPods finally went on sale, Dec. 13, 2016, wireless earphone sales were "ten times greater than the pre-holiday average for 2016. It was the largest single day of online headphone spending in the last year."

It's quite a turn of events for the AirPods, which — despite a handful of glowing pre-release reviews — got off to a bumpy start. Read more...

This sneaky 'Super Mario World' hack has been in hiding for 26 years

For anyone who grew up playing the Super NES, there are few things more nostalgic than the sight of Mario's adorably pixelated little face bobbing along beneath that charming red cap of his.

There are also few sights more frustration-invoking than that of Big Boo — the highly irritating, seemingly impossible-to-kill baddie who'd follow you around the ghost house whenever your back was turned.

Well, according to the clip below, it looks like there was an easy way to get rid of Boo the whole time:

Andy Cohen's got the 411 on those 'Real Housewives Reunion' leaks

Andy Cohen, everyone's favorite bubbly and outspoken talk show host, has no time for snitches.

While the man behind the Real Housewives franchise clearly loves a good dose of drama, he definitely doesn't appreciate leaks about the Housewives reunion shows.

In a recent New York Times profile on the cool Watch What Happens Live host, a fun anecdote revealed that leaks to press were coming from none other than members of the hair and makeup crew.

But don't worry, Andy handled it.

Explaining the intense secrecy behind the Season 7 Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion show taping in October 2016, New York Times writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner revealed that Cohen, the reunion-show mediator, realized the leaks were coming from the beauty teams. Read more...

Watch animals at the Oregon Zoo frolic through their snow day

Is there anyone who enjoys a snow day more than kids who just got a day off school?

Yes. Zoo animals.

The Oregon Zoo closed its doors yesterday due to a snow storm that moved through the area. With their time off, the zoo animals decided to take the day for themselves and thoroughly enjoy the snowy weather. What results is the cutest video of the winter courtesy of the Oregonian.

The Oregon Zoo also tweeted out their own video of animals rolling and flopping around in the snow. It is a rare treat to see an elephant confronted with snow, not really know what to do, but then realize it's actually the best thing ever. Read more...

These robots are transforming how we see wildlife

Wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas had long wanted to add up-close-and-personal images of iconic African animals to his portfolio. But to get those intimate shot of lions and leopards, he would need to crawl up right next to their sharp-toothed faces.

So Burrard-Lucas devised a far less deadly alternative.

In 2009, during a trip to Tanzania and Kenya, he bolted a camera to a small remote-controlled, four-wheel buggy and steered the rig toward herds of elephants and rambunctious lions. His BeetleCam, now on its fifth edition, has since evolved to include new features like a remotely-operated camera tilt and a live video feed. Read more...

Dax Shepard and Michael Peña go old school in raunchy 'CHiPs' trailer

An '80s cop show revived for the 21st century — sound familiar?

Dax Shepard and Michael Peña channel strong 21 Jump Street vibes in the trailer for CHiPs, in which they play an odd couple of highway patrollers on a mission to take down dirty cops.

Shepard plays Jon Baker and Peña plays Frank "Ponch" Poncherello, an agent undercover with the California Highway Patrol. As with the CHiPs television series, which ran from 1977 to 1983, the film and trailer devote a lot of time to the tense partnership of Baker and Ponch.

The film adaptation is written and directed by Shepard, who promoted it on Ellen as early as 2015, when he showed up in full highway patrol uniform and spoke about his love of the original series.  Read more...

5 digital marketing trends that will die in 2017

As Benjamin Franklin wrote, “Nothing is certain except death and taxes.”

He might as well have added that it’s a near certainty that writers will trot out lists of predictions at the beginning of any new year. I won’t exempt myself from that rule, but whereas many are content to predict new trends, I’ll restrict my predictions to those trends I believe are dying, unless they get some major form of life support.

1. Twitter!

Will Twitter become the new MySpace? While it may be too early to say goodbye to Twitter, we all know it’s struggling while Facebook and Snapchat continue to grow. Twitter’s share is 27.3% among all social media users, a decline compared to previous numbers. Although the return of Jack Dorsey may herald a wave of improvements, Twitter has been languishing for years now, and it may be too little, too late. The company made minor changes last year, like not counting images and video toward the 140 character limit, and has hinted at more changes, but it will take more than a little bit of flexibility to woo new users.  Read more...

Apple reportedly wants to start making TV shows

Apple is in talks to begin making high-end television shows that could rival the kind of work produced by HBO and Netflix, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The company has been in talks with studio executives and producers, and hopes to have something to show for its efforts by the end of 2017, according to the report.

That's the kind of news that can send shivers down the spines — or dollar signs into the dreams — of the entire entertainment industry. Apple has long been seen as a quiet giant whose entry into the content creation industry would be a game changer. While Apple's main business is in making products and providing distribution for TV and music, the prospect that the company — and its cash pile of $230 billion — could begin making its own content has loomed.  Read more...

For game developers, HTC's Vive edges out the Oculus Rift

The latest Game Developers Conference survey, polling 4,500 developers this year, is in and developers have spoken. Among many other opinions on the video games industry is this: VR and AR are taking over, and it looks like HTC's Vive is leading with a current slight advantage in that race.

Developers' general interest in VR platforms is almost evenly divided between the Vive and the Oculus Rift, but comparing favoring percentages from this year's survey to last's—when the Oculus Rift had 40% of developers' interest compared to Vive's 26%—it seems like HTC's Vive is in place to increasingly overcome the Oculus Rift. Although it was the Oculus Rift that managed an early start with initial marketing and early kits, more developers are looking to develop for HTC's Vive, and considering the platform for any potential exclusive titles, too. A foreign minister invented a fake country and Twitter had a field day

The Polish foreign minister was probably very tired when he met reporters in New York and mentioned a non-existent country — "San Escobar."

Witold Waszczykowski was in the U.S. to lobby for a seat on the UN Security Council from 2018-19.

He told the press that he held meetings with officials from nearly 20 countries, including some Caribbean nations "for the first time in the history of our diplomacy," countries "such as Belize or San Escobar."

Waszczykowski's spokeswoman, Joanna Wajda, later said the top diplomat had been thinking of Saint Kitts and Nevis (known as San Cristobal y Nieves in Spanish).  Read more...

This startup is taking on fake news in the vitamin and supplement world

The term "snake oil" — now a catch-all for any scam good with a flashy sales pitch — originated in the days when con artists would roam from town to town by wagon, shilling useless health elixirs to unwitting marks.

Today, their spiritual successors have a bit more technology at their disposal. They've traded in the slick speeches and stages for blogs and websites, making for an online media universe of holistic cures and herbal remedies that's notoriously rife with sometimes dangerous misinformation.

That bad reputation is one of the biggest challenges faced by a new startup called Care/of, which offers personalized vitamin and supplement regimens on a monthly subscription basis.  Read more...

Trevor Noah saw plenty to fear in Trump's press conference

Daily Show host Trevor Noah believes Donald Trump's press conference on Wednesday – the president-elect's first in around six months – gave us more than enough reason to be scared.

He found many issues in Trump's wild press conference, like when Trump prattled on about his ability to run his business and the country if he chose to, which Noah found disturbing enough.

But maybe the biggest decry to the president-elect came when Noah ended his segment by focusing on Trump's shouting match with CNN's Jim Acosta, who was trying to ask the president-elect a question after Trump attacked his news organization.  Read more...

Facebook is hiring engineers to basically mind read

This might just be the unlikeliest game show win ever

This has to be the best "pointless" answer on gameshow television.

Tasha and Jo were contestants on the BBC’s Pointless, a quiz show where competitors try to get the least amount of points by giving answers that no-one else can come up with. Essentially, the more obscure the answer, the better.

Final time! Can Tasha & Jo take home the jackpot with these questions on the year 2000? #Pointless pic.twitter.com/AagfwvS4No

The pair got down to the final round and only needed to come up with one answer to win. In response to a question about goal scorers from the 2000 Euros, Tasha answered "Henrik Larsson" without hesitation — which turned out to be both correct and completely pointless. It won them the jackpot.   Read more...

Mysterious light pillars light up northern Canada's night sky

At 1:30 in the morning, while most of northern Canada was asleep, Timothy Joseph Elzinga was tending to his crying toddler. Then he looked out the bathroom window.

The vertical columns of red, blue, orange and white appear when light reflects off the flat, mirror-like surfaces of ice crystals. Light pillars are typically seen in polar regions but can appear at lower latitudes in frigid temperatures.  Read more...

Belgian police issue alert about foldable gun that looks like a phone

From afar, the gun, when folded up, is difficult to distinguish from a typical smartphone.

Watch a fiery congressman explain why he'll be holding his wife's hand at the Women's March this year

In between the chaos of Trump's press conferences and the trauma of the Senate confirmation hearings, it can be difficult for voices of dissent to be heard.

Thankfully, there are people like Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) who delivered a memorable and fiery speech to the house floor this Tuesday explaining why he wouldn't be attending this year's inauguration.

Gutierrez, who is Latino, explained that he had attended inaugurations in his past including George Bush's, but this year was different.

"This is different. I knew that George W. Bush and I would disagree on many issues . . . Kendall Jenner firmly denies 'upsetting' plastic surgery rumors

The picture showed Jenner sporting pouty lips and the internet was quick to accuse her of putting in lip fillers in an attempt to follow in her little sister's footsteps. When Jenner deleted her Instagram account shortly after the picture was taken, many took that as the model trying to hide the results of a "full facial reconstruction."

2016's 'Hitman' was great because it didn't let players binge

Hitman's 2016 success was moored to a simple idea: shut down the binge.

Yes, the drawn-out release of six episodes during an eight-month period also kept the game in the "new releases" conversation far longer than most. But for developer IO Interactive, the biggest benefit by far was the way an episodic release took all players — new and old — to Hitman school.

'American Crime Story: Katrina' won't air until 2018

FX's People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story became a cultural phenomenon in 2016 — scooping nine Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes in addition to dominating the zeitgeist — but its intended follow-up, American Crime Story: Katrina, is still a long way off.

At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that the franchise would not return to our screens until 2018 — in part because "it's taking us time to get material we're happy with."

Unlike People v. O.J., which was based on Jeffrey Toobin's book, The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, the source material for Katrina has proven harder to nail down. "It's not a lurid, true crime series with reenactments," Landgraf noted. "We have high ambitions for this show."  Read more...
