Internet Archive wants to get rid of link rot

You know that thing where you're reading something interesting but then you see a super interesting link and you're like, yeah, I'm gonna click the shit out of this, and then you do, and your computer fritzes, blinks at you, and then you get a 404 error?

Internet Archive has built a tool to make that stop happening.

Internet Archive has long chronicled deceased web pages with the Wayback Machine, allowing users to access stuff that is no longer readily available. But, of course, users would have to know about the Wayback Machine and how to use it.  Read more...

Here's why two players didn't attend the Chicago Cubs' White House visit

As teams across sports hedge on whether or not they'll visit the White House (a customary stop for championship teams) during a Trump presidency, the Chicago Cubs bypassed the debate altogether, squeezing in a visit during President Obama's last week in office.

Obama celebrated the Cubs' historic World Series victory on Monday afternoon, while the team showed up with copious amounts of swag for the president including customized Air Jordans, two personalized No. 44 Obama jerseys and a lifetime pass to Wrigley field.

But two popular players  — starting pitchers Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta — were noticeably absent, sparking questions of whether they skipped for political reasons. Read more...

This cat hanging with his boys took the best selfie of all time

It's a depressing thing, to see a picture and instantly know you aren't cool enough to hang with a cat and some dogs.

A selfie taken by Manny, the selfie-loving cat, is already being called the best of 2017. I try to avoid hyperbole so know that I mean to be taken literally when I say that this is in fact, the best selfie of the year.

I mean, look at this cat and his boys. Manny and his bros are going cruising tonight and they dropped a dope selfie on social to let everyone know where the party's at (wherever they are).

One of the most underrated heroes in comics is back. Here's a first look

For years, Valiant Comics has been a leading publisher in the indie market. It's been nominated for several Harvey Awards and has top-notch titles like Harbinger and Bloodshot on its roster.

But Valiant Comics' underrated flagship was a series called X-O Manowar. After its launch back in 1992, it became an indie classic, selling more than 8 million copies. Now, 25 years after it began, X-O Manowar is back — and Mashable can exclusively reveal 6 pages from the first story at the bottom of the page.

The series follows Aric of Dacia, a Visigoth from the Roman Empire who was captured by aliens and escapes back to Earth — which has reached the 21st century, thanks to the time dilation of space travel. He wears a high-tech suit of armor, which helps him to battle alien foes in our era.  Read more...

30 years after the real 'Cool Runnings,' Jamaican bobsled team crowdfunds for a coach

It'd be quite a story, that's for sure.

Jamaica could win its first-ever medal in bobsled next year at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea — exactly 30 years after the Caribbean island nation improbably debuted in the sport at the 1988 Olympics, a tale later immortalized in the Hollywood classic Cool Runnings

But there's just one problem: The Jamaican bobsled team needs a coach, and it has no money to hire one.

"Most of the time we just manage each other and try to hold each other accountable as much as possible," team member Jazmine Fenlator told Mashable by phone Tuesday. "But it's a lot simpler mentally and physically to have someone as a mentor and authoritative figure to keep you motivated as well."  Read more...

Mario enters the real world in hilarious 'Grand Theft Auto' mod

Nintendo gave the world a glimpse of its upcoming game Super Mario Odyssey last week, which showed Mario running and leaping around a brand new setting for the Mario series: a real-looking city.

The internet thought it looked a bit like Grand Theft Auto with the mustachioed goomba-stomper as the main character, which is a pretty funny idea, juxtaposing the bright and fun world of Mario with the violent and profane one of GTA. Well that idea has become a reality with a mod the injects Mario into the gritty world of Grand Theft Auto 4, police shootouts and all.

It just goes to show that Mario's antics in the real world probably wouldn't be as well-received as they are in the Mushroom Kingdom. Read more...

Obama commutes majority of Chelsea Manning's sentence

President Barack Obama commuted the vast majority of Chelsea Manning's sentence on Tuesday, shrinking her time behind bars from another 28 years down to four more months.

After spending around seven years in prison, she is now set to be released on May 17 2017.

Manning was convicted of leaking a huge amount of United States military and foreign policy material in 2010. The information was provided to then little-known WikiLeaks, launching the organization into international renown.

Edward Snowden, whose intelligence leaks catapulted to international fame similar to Manning's in 2013, has publicly called for her sentence to be commuted. Read more...

'Die Hard' director emerges from 14-year exile, and makes the 'Ghost Recon' trailer

It's hard to believe John McTiernan—arguably Hollywood's most celebrated director of pure action movies—has been away this long. Or that this is how he chose to start what we hope is a big comeback.

Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, even Last Action Hero—McTiernan is a titan of the genre from the 1980s and '90s, but he virtually disappeared after a bizarre tangle with the law that ended with a nearly year-long prison sentence in 2013 for his involvement in the infamous Anthony Pellicano wiretapping case.

With great regret I, Laffy the children's party clown, must pull out of my inauguration performance

To my most loyal fans, their parents, older siblings and the various friends and family members also on my email list:

It is with great sadness that I, Laffy the ventriloquist party clown, must pull out of my performance at the the inauguration of Donald Trump.

As a children's party clown of the highest order, I viewed the president-elect's offer to headline the event as a chance to perform as an act of patriotism. Chelsea Manning will go free. Now, about Julian Assange's extradition ...

WikiLeaks made a big offer just five days ago. If President Barack Obama commuted Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange would allow himself to be sent back to the U.S. to face charges for disseminating classified information.

That offer is being put to the test. On Tuesday afternoon, news broke that Obama had used his power as president to release Manning, a former army intelligence analyst, from prison as of May 17, 2017.

WikiLeaks had made the offer in a tweet, which remains up.

Mind-blowing video shows how all Pixar films are connected

Here's the difference between Chelsea Manning's case and Edward Snowden's

With the stunning news that a bulk of Chelsea Manning's remaining sentence has been commuted by President Obama, there's an obvious question in the air about that other infamous leaker of government document troves, Edward Snowden.

Mainly: Why pardon Chelsea Manning, but not Edward Snowden?

It's easy to conflate the two, due in no small part to the fact that Snowden issued his own heart-felt call to Obama to commute Manning's sentence just last week.

Mr. President, if you grant only one act of clemency as you exit the White House, please: free Chelsea Manning. You alone can save her life.

LG's going above and beyond to make sure its next phone doesn't explode

This year's must-have smartphone feature isn't a higher resolution screen, faster processor or better camera. It's a battery that won't explode.

After failing spectacularly with its modular G5, LG's reportedly gone back to the drawing board and will introduce its next flagship phone, presumably the G6, at Mobile World Congress next month.

LG's not taking any chances with the G6 when it comes to battery safety, according to The Korea Herald.

The Korean electronics giant told the publication, it will use copper "heat pipes" to redirect heat away from the processor, similar to the way PCs and laptops use heatsinks to cool their chips. With heat pipes, the phone's heat could be reduced anywhere between 6 to 10 percent, allowing the device to remain cooler, and less likely to overheat and explode. Read more...

But rather than going gently into the good night, Vine's repetitive viewer experience will live on as Twitter will now automatically loop video content under 6.5 seconds.

TechCrunch first noticed the new functionality, noting that it extends to all video content uploaded to Twitter, even from other platforms like Snapchat. It shouldn't come as a big surprise, though — a series of FAQs Vine released to ease users into its new age teased the feature. Read more...

Meanwhile, Australia's discussing which animal's most likely to kill you

Being murdered by animals is one of Australia's top national obsessions. Specifically, Aussies enjoy discussing which animal is the best at murdering.

It's not hard to see why. The country is one big, dirt-covered homicide party. That said, it seems Australia's most prolific killers aren't getting the credit they deserve.

Put simply, Crowe seems to be an avid phone photographer and it's amazing. After all, creativity is what he's all about. He was the front man of late, lamented band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, don't forget. We should put him in the MOMA.

Here is a sampling of his oeuvre:

One of baseball's most unpopular players is thriving in retirement

Former MLB All-Star Alex Rodriguez will host a CNBC show called "Back in the Game," which chronicles the financial woes of ex-athletes struggling to navigate life after their playing days, according to multiple reports

And if you've been following A-Rod since his playing career ended last year, you know he is the most ironic choice to host this show, because A-Rod is absolutely killing the retirement game.

In fact, it seems like Rodriguez's post-playing days are treating him better than his 22 years in the big leagues. Though he amassed 14 All-Star appearances, three MVP awards and a World Series ring, A-Rod was somewhat of a polarizing figure in Major League Baseball. Read more...

'Even stray dogs have a right to live': India's Supreme Court rules

India's apex court has weighed in resoundingly on a petitioner who wanted all stray dogs killed. It has observed that "nobody can destroy stray dogs in entirety. They also have a right to live," the Press Trust of India reported

However, a methodical culling is possible, it has said.

The apex court has been hearing a series of petitions filed by NGOs and civic bodies across the country on stray dogs that have become a menace, especially in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The bench informed that a panel headed by a former Kerala High Court judge had received around 400 matters related to dog bites and it was working on it. Some deaths have also been reported.  Read more...

Samsung may have 'leaked' its Galaxy S8, and boy does it look gorgeous

There's a couple of things we can guess about Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S8, but there's very little in terms of actual, official info.

However, Samsung's own display-making arm, Samsung Display, may have been leaking the Galaxy S8's looks for days now, right in front of our eyes — on its official YouTube channel

In a series of videos touting the company's new AMOLED displays, a phone with extremely slim bezels and an enormous screen-to-body ratio can be seen — and it closely matches the renders and rumors about the upcoming S8.

Bangkok will hold its first gay pride parade in 11 years

Bangkok will hold its first gay pride parade later this year, a long 11 years after its last.

While Thailand has held a pride event each year in the island of Phuket, the pride parade coming back to the capital is a show of unity for the local LGBTQ community, one of the organisers said.

"It was the lack of organisation and a lack of a definite plan back then that really affected Pride to go ahead," Paul Heymans, founder of OUT BKK, one of the LGBTQ organisations involved in Bangkok Pride, told Mashable.

The pride parades of a decade ago were organised by the business sector, and capitalised on the gay movement, and were less focused on promoting visibility or acceptance for the LGBTQ community, claims Rapeepun Jommaroeng, the deputy secretary-general of Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand (RSAT), another one of the organisers. Governor orders subway train redesign, because he thought it looked like a cricket

The reason? Governors thought the train looked "too much like a cricket."

The city's acting governor Sumarsono was reportedly dissatisfied with the insect-like face of the train.

"When the contractors presented the design, around 90 percent of the people in the meeting said, 'How did we end up with this design?' No one remembered approving it," he was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Globe. Read more...

A month after delivery boy's murder, Flipkart launches new SOS feature

Amazon's India rival, Flipkart, has launched Project Nanjunda, a unique safety initiative for its delivery boys — the backbone of any ecommerce business.

Flipkart field execs, also known as Wishmasters, will now have access to an SOS button on their mobile app. It can work over a normal cellular network without data connectivity, thus making it more viable. Called the Nanjunda Button, it will trigger an alarm to the nearest hub-in-charge in case of an emergency, Flipkart said in a statement.

The project has been named after the deceased Wishmaster, Nanjunda Swamy, who was murdered by a customer when he delivered the package as he wanted to buy a smartphone but didn't have any money. In India, you can order an item online and pay for it at the time of delivery. Read more...

'Message in a bottle' found 9,000 miles away with a tech twist

Finding a message in a bottle is every romantic's dream and it recently happened IRL for one woman on a Scottish island.

Rhoda Meek, who lives in Tiree in the inner Hebrides, was alerted by a friend that one of those special messages had came ashore.

She went to investigate and discovered it was in fact a GPS-tracked scientific experiment that travelled all the way from Iceland.

The story behind this "message in a bottle"

  • Two GPS tracker capsules were dropped from a helicopter into the sea as part of a project with Iceland's national broadcaster and the engineering company Verkis.

  • The aim was to show children that rubbish dumped in the sea does not disappear. It comes ashore and becomes a problem for the environment and people living on coastlines.

  • The bottles can be tracked online

  • The second device is still floating off the Western Isles.  Read more...

People are dumping shared bikes in horrible piles

This is why we can't have nice things.

In China, all of the bike-sharing providers operate in a similar way. Instead of requiring people to dock their bikes at a shared station, like what you see with New York's Citi Bike, the bikes in China don't need to be locked down. You find one with your app, ride it, and simply leave it by the curbside when you're done.

But bike-sharing companies in China have discovered one downside to this convenience: People destroying or dumping their bikes after use.

These pictures of a massive pile of bikes in Shenzhen say it all. Several bike-sharing startups are waging a fierce war for users in the tech town, and are flooding street corners with hundreds and thousands of bikes in the hopes of raising visibility. Read more...

Why Nintendo isn't interested in the digital arms race

How do you know if one piece of technology is "better" than its competitors? For the well-read consumer, it usually comes down to sheer power numbers.

Run down the list and it's all about resolution, frame rate, battery life, storage, pricing, etc. For gamers, it's also about what and how many titles you're getting. That's not to discount all the other factors that determine whether a home console is worth a purchase — like online features, how they function, what they cost.

But there's been a very specific graphical prowess war that has invaded all other purchasing thought processes. It's why there are dozens of game comparison videos on YouTube showing off what games look like on an Xbox One versus Playstation 4. Read more...

2016 sets 'terrifying' milestone as Earth's warmest year on record

Last year was Earth's warmest on record since at least 1880, two federal agencies announced Wednesday.

Last year's global average surface temperature eclipsed previous highs set in 2014 and 2015. In fact, both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found that 2016's temperatures exceeded all previous years since instrument records began 137 years ago, and that human-caused global warming was responsible for a majority of the planetary fever.

2. Eat breakfast! Don’t forget that you’re allowed to treat yourself to the most important meal of the day. This playlist for Trump's inauguration will burn your ears off

Warning: The inauguration-inspired playlist you are about to hear is extremely bad. We apologize in advance.

You have Donald Trump to thank for this attack on your ears, however, because after struggling hardcore to book A-List entertainment for the main event, the president-elect was able to convince to the following big(ly) names to perform at his inauguration weekend: Jackie Evancho — a runner-up from America's Got Talent — country singer Toby Keith and 3 Doors Down, a band of rockers not to be confused with Three Days Grace or Third Eye Blind.

23 incredible photos from Disney's 'Star Wars' cruise

It was the last full week before the Dark Times. Before the Trumpire.

But as the world held its breath, thousands of Star Wars fans from around the world had paid top dollar months ago to book a weeklong Star Wars-themed Caribbean cruise aboard Disney's equivalent of a Star Destroyer, the Fantasy — and they were going to have their fantasy vacation, dammit, even if many of them had a Very Bad Feeling About This.

The cruise in question only had one official "Star Wars Day at Sea." But it was greatly expanded from an experimental sailing in January 2016 — this time with more characters, more activities, more Star Wars themes on the ship's horn. Fans and Disney cast members alike were decked out in their Star Wars finery every day of the week. Read more...

Lake freezes solid for first time in 21 years

Ice skaters flocked to a new spot for the first time in more than 20 years: Trout Lake in a Vancouver park. A recent cold spell meant the lake was frozen solid and safe enough to skate and walk on for the first time since 1996

But warmer weather this week means the January skate sessions were short-lived. At least we got the awesome drone footage of the winter wonderland before rainy, warmer weather again destroyed our skating dreams.

Gabe Newell stokes the 'Half-Life 3' fire

Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve Corporation, participated in a Reddit AMA Tuesday, hinting at a brand new single player game and sharing other nuggets that we've highlighted below.

Answering Redditors' questions, Newell confirmed Valve is working on at least one fully-fledged single player game. Newell also mentioned the existence of some "unannounced products" on the Source 2 engine and said that Valve is designing its own virtual reality games.

Possibly the most important question that received the most substantive news about upcoming Valve projects was floated by Redditor Japasthebass, who asked: "Any chance of a new [intellectual property] that takes place in the Half-Life/Portal universe? I feel like there's a lot of story left to be explored there. Thanks!" Read more...

Trump's proposed 2020 slogan is familiar because it's the exact tagline from 'The Purge: Election'

It makes sense that the man who ran for President with the slogan "Make America great again" would pursue reelection with "Keep America Great." Unfortunately for Donald Trump, that slogan was already used in 2016 by the great folks behind The Purge: Election Year.

"Get me my lawyer!" Trump called during an interview with The Washington Post, and it wasn't to start suing the team behind Election Year for the slogan that they came up with first, but to trademark and register "Keep America Great" (exclamation point optional) for 2020. Read more...

Emily Turner — a writer and researcher — and Cornforth's biographer Kirsty Stonell-Walker are crowdfunding for two memorials for Cornforth, who's been dubbed "the patron saint of overlooked women"

This is what a venture capitalist in deep, deep denial sounds like: Theranos backer Tim Draper

There was once a moment in time when Theranos was one of the most successful startups in the country—a blood-testing dynamo that would change medical science forever, improve the lives of millions of people, and make a hefty chunk of change for its investors.

These 3 graphics explain 2016’s record warmth

Climate scientists around the world just announced that 2016 is the warmest year on record, beating out 2015 and 2014 for the dubious distinction.

The temperature milestone means that 16 of the 17 warmest years on record have now occurred since 2001, with each of the past three years setting global heat records.

It's all well and good to say that 2016 was the hottest year on record, but to put that figure into context, you need decades of data.

On Wednesday, NASA and media outlets (including Mashable) released graphics to do exactly that by showing exactly how 2016 eclipsed other years to become Earth's hottest year on record.  Read more...

The FAA just settled one of the biggest drone lawsuits ever

The website of SkyPan International features a slideshow of panoramic aerial photos taken over Chicago and New York City. But, gorgeous as they are, any of them taken by a drone may have cost the company a huge chunk of cash.

The Federal Aviation Administration settled a lawsuit with SkyPan on Tuesday to the tune of $200,000 after alleging the company had used drones to snap aerial cityscape photos from 2012 through 2014 without governmental approval.

The FAA claimed SkyPan — a company that provides "aerial visual solutions" to a large list of clients in construction and real estate — had broken the law both by flying a drone for commercial purposes, which was not allowed during those years, and by illegally flying a drone over a heavily populated area. Fox News dominated election news — especially among Trump voters

When it comes to campaign news, Donald Trump voters overwhelmingly point to Fox News as their leading source, according to a new survey released on Wednesday.

The Pew Research Center asked voters to write in their main news sources during the election. Forty percent of Trump voters named Fox News, more than tripling the percent who named CNN, the next most common answer.

Among Democrats, CNN led the way with 18%, followed by MSNBC at 8%.

The report adds to growing evidence that U.S. voters consume very different sources of news, with conservatives united in their consumption of Fox News

Moth named after Donald Trump for uncanny resemblance

What has a scaly-looking head of gold? Well, Donald Trump, of course... but also this moth.

The Neopalpa donaldtrumpi, a new species of tiny moth, has been named after the president-elect due to the striking physical resemblance between the moth's yellow and white scales and Trump's hair.

The centimeter-wide moth — discovered by Canadian biologist and researcher, Vazrick Nazari — may have been named after Trump "to bring wider public attention to the need to continue protecting fragile habitats in the U.S.," but we have a feeling he might not be too happy about his new namesake.
