'Pharma bro' Martin Shkreli pegged in the face by dog poop at protest
A scheduled joint appearance by nefarious pharma bro Martin Shkreli and Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos went sideways on Friday due to protests, during which Shkreli got pegged in the face by dog poop. The event, promoted using the hashtag "#SHKRELOPOULOS," was canceled on Friday evening by its organizers, the Davis College Republicans, after protesters blocked access to the venue on the UC Davis campus, according to a statement from the college.
Rare photos show Obama girls on their first visit to the White House
For nearly all American children, shimmying around the White House in your tights or roaming its historic, hidden rooms will always remain a fantasy. But a handful of kids really have made the presidential residence their playground. A series of rare 2008 photos, posted by NBC's TODAY show, capture the Obama daughters sliding down a wooden ramp, peering inside the Lincoln Bedroom and sprawling across big red chairs in the White House movie theater. Sasha and Malia Obama were then 7 and 10 years old, respectively, and toured the White House with the twin daughters of former President George W. Bush. Read more... Uber wants to build a better map. Next stop? Australia.
Like Google and even Tesla, Uber wants to map the world down to the right-hand lane and Australia is the focus of its latest effort. Following mapping projects in the U.S., Canada and the UK, as well as Mexico and South Africa, the transport giant is launching locally on the Gold Coast Monday, with a wider rollout to follow. In what has become something of a weekly tradition, President-elect Donald Trump has once again responded to an unflattering portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live. The skit, which featured Alec Baldwin again as Trump, made reference to that leaked, totally unverified dossier and the lurid allegations of, in the show's words, the "big Russian pee-pee party." On Sunday evening, Trump finally responded.
3 guys happen to catch SpaceX launch from an airplane
SpaceX successfully launched — and landed! — its Falcon 9 rocket on Saturday, it's first launch since another one of its rockets exploded last fall. Luckily for us, some adventurous guys caught the whole thing on camera from nearly two miles up in the air. As the rocket, carrying 10 communications satellites for the company Iridium, lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a trio of flight enthusiasts were flying their own small airplane at around 8,500 feet, outside of the no-fly zone but still close enough for a terrific view of the launch, including the below video from Van Espahbodi of Starburst Accelerator. Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone take 'musical quiz' and one of them fails miserably
Ryan Gosling may have nailed his performance in the multi-Golden Globe-winning musical La La Land, but damn, he knows almost nothing about the genre. While Emma Stone adorably offered mostly-correct answers to the "musical quiz" questions, leveled at her by Magic Radio, London, her co-star Gosling grimaced through the ordeal enough to provide footage for a whole new "Ryan Gosling won’t eat his cereal" edit. So how bad was he? Let's just say he thought "Rainbows on roses and whiskers on kittens" was a quote from Mary Poppins. To be fair to the actor, musicals are the worst. Kickstarter is the first tech company to publicly back the legislation, which was proposed by the New York City public advocate's office. The law, which would apply to the private, governmental and nonprofit sectors, is intended to reduce the gender wage gap in New York. When women — or other minority groups — are historically underpaid, sharing their salary histories with potential employers perpetuates that cycle of inequity. Read more... Fans anxiously awaiting the sequel to The Last of Us can instead look to Lego builder Tim Schwalfenberg. Schwalfenberg built a Lego diorama of the 2013 Playstation game, spotted by Kotaku, that covers an entire city block of the game's dystopia. The 100-hour, 20,000-brick project shows The Last of Us's Ellie and Joel surrounded by junk and overgrown grass. Playstation debuted a trailer for the game's long-awaited sequel last month. There's no release date yet, so let the Lego version tide you over. Read more... A head on fire topped with a "Make America Great Again" hat haunts Green Day's lyric video for their Revolution Radio track, "Troubled Times." Releasing the song on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is no accident — the video features footage of the Civil Rights hero and the March on Washington in 1963 as well as images from the suffrage movement. Green Day wants to make it clear they're not going to stay silent while Donald Trump reverses the progress made by these people. “Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever,” said Billie Joe Armstrong in a press release. 10 companies that have successfully transformed something old to make it new again
Some of the most striking business success stories of the last few years aren't about a new product or idea so much as they are about revamping something well-loved (or at least, well-used) and making it feel exciting again. How do the best brands take nostalgia and familiarity and fuse them with modern technology to create a winning product or service? To find out, I asked 10 entrepreneurs from Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) what one brand they think has successfully turned something old into something new again, and why it worked so well. Germany has taken a tough stance in the battle against fake news and now it's about to become the first country outside of the U.S. to get Facebook's new tools help combat the problem. Nothing to see here, just a ginormous alligator casually sauntering across your path.
