Alcohol-sensing wearable wants to tell you how drunk you are

LAS VEGAS — "Dude, I got so drunk last night."

Now you'll actually have proof.

While the world of wearables has been getting a bit stale recently, Proof by Milo Sensors is trying to switch things up a bit. The slim band fits around your wrist like any of the fitness trackers on the market, but instead of tracking your motions with an accelerometer, Proof reads alcohol molecules through your skin.

Image: proof

According to Proof, the enzyme-based electrochemical sensor converts alcohol into an electrical current, and is able to accurately display your blood alcohol content (BAC) level discreetly using its accompanying Android or iOS app. Your friends at the bar may think you're checking your phone, but instead you're seeing if you're sober enough to drive home. Somebody has reimagined 'Home Alone' with blood and it's not so funny anymore

If you're like me, you grew up watching 8-year-old Kevin McCallister effortlessly thwart a violent home burglary after being forgotten and left behind by his vacation-bound family. Surprisingly, it was a heartwarming tale.

However, if you're also like me, you also grew up wondering how Harry nonchalantly takes a crowbar to the chest and doesn't wake up in the morgue the next day. Or how Old Man Marley knocks the Wet Bandits unconscious with a metal shovel and they both manage to live on to appear in the sequel.

Well there's some good news: you no longer have to live in blissful ignorance. YouTube user BitMassive has reimagined the film with blood and needless to say, it's uh...much shorter.   Read more...

"While it’s no surprise that Trump has been actively tweeting since the election, no one anticipated that a single tweet could potentially eradicate billions of dollars in market cap from large companies," the startup wrote in a blog post.  Read more...

Laser-cut seaweed makes sushi so beautiful you won't want to eat it

Cutting edge technology, meet literal cutting edge.

Umino Seaweed has collaborated with international ad agency I & S BBDO to create Design Nori, a collection of intricately designed laser-cut seaweed to create the most beautiful sushi you'll ever eat.

Crafted in five delicate designs, each sheet of dried nori features a unique motif from Japanese history or symbology. The designs are mizutama (water drops), sakura (cherry blossoms), kikkou (turtle shell), kumikkou (tortoise shell), and asanoha (hemp).

In order to keep the dried seaweed from crumbling during the creation, Umino used a specific, thicker variety of the vegetation from the Sanriku region of Miyagi, Japan. Read more...

21 kids have a court date with Trump’s secretary of state nominee

Alex Loznak is about to head into the second semester of his sophomore year at Columbia University, but he's not your typical student. He's one of 21 people, ages nine to 21, suing the federal government for failing to protect them from the damaging effects of climate change.

Loznak, 19, and his fellow plaintiffs are hoping to advance their case, which is set to go to trial as early as this summer, by deposing current ExxonMobil CEO and Trump administration secretary of state nominee Rex Tillerson.

According to Loznak and the legal team fighting the case, Tillerson is in the best position to speak to the "collusion" between fossil fuel companies and the government to maintain a fossil fuel-centric economy despite well-known evidence that burning fuels like coal and oil cause global warming. T-Mobile will start paying you for unused data

LAS VEGAS — T-Mobile is changing the way it's billing you.

CEO John Legere announced some "new rules" for the carrier's plans at an event during CES 2017. The biggest change, which it plans to implement later in January, is the introduction of a program called KickBack, which will credit customers for data they don't use.

If a customer uses less than 2GB per line, they can get a credit of up to $20 for unused data — again, per line. The amount will be credited on the customer's next bill. The program goes into effect Jan. 22 and will show up on February bills. Read more...

'Charmed' could be coming back to TV, but don't freak out yet

Since reboots are the pop culture trend du jour, this one was probably inevitable: The CW is developing a new take on The WB's beloved supernatural drama Charmed, Mashable has confirmed.

But before you light your torches and go on a witch hunt to defend the honor of the Halliwell sisters, there are a few things you should know:

1) The new iteration of Charmed is described as a "reimagining," not a reboot, and will be set in 1976 if it gets picked up to series. There's no word yet on whether it will center around the Halliwell family or another group of spellcasters.

2) The deal is only for a script — the show hasn't been given a pilot order for filming yet — which means that the project may not ever see the light of day; it all depends on what the network thinks of the script when it comes in.  Read more...

Xiaomi shows off a new, super-thin smart TV that costs less than $2,000

LAS VEGAS — Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi is jumping in to the ultra-thin TV game.

The company introduced a new smart TV, the Mi TV 4, during a press event at CES Thursday. The ultra-slim set is just under 5 millimeters thick, making it the company's thinnest TV yet.

Since it is so thin, the television ships with a dedicated soundbar that houses the Mi TV's speakers and other components. The soundbar connects to the TV via a single cable.

Available in 49-, 55- and 65-inch varieties, it is set to ship in China later this year for "well under $2000 USD," Xiaomi's Hugo Barra said during the event, though he didn't reveal an exact price.  Read more...

Grab my nuts at your own risk, Alabama star warns Clemson before national championship

Here is a story from the world of sports, which are not at all absurd and definitely a thing to always be taken very seriously.

Alabama star Cam Robinson has a message for Clemson ahead of Monday night's matchup for the college football national championship. Grab my nuts at your own risk, the left tackle says.

But hold your laughter — Robinson has legitimate cause for concern.

"They better not try me like that," Robinson said Thursday, per AL.com. "That's all I've got to say."

By "try me like that," Robinson was referring to an ignominious moment from Clemson's national semifinal matchup against Ohio State last weekend. After one run, Clemson defensive lineman Christian Wilkins was caught getting very up close and very personal with an Ohio State player.  Read more...

The ad block apocalypse didn't arrive and doesn't look like it's going to

China is about to kick America's butt in renewable energy

China says it will drastically boost its spending on renewable energy over the next four years. The United States, meanwhile, may head down a different path under Trump.

China's energy agency said Thursday it would plow 2.5 trillion yuan, or $361 billion, into clean electricity projects by 2020 as part of a broader effort to shift the nation away from fossil fuels.

Although coal-fired power plants have helped drive China's manufacturing growth in the past decade, the facilities have also created a slew of public health crises, such as dangerous smog in northern China and toxic water pollution. Read more...

How the internet is tracking Trump's every word

This wearable subwoofer lets you feel the bass in your body

Venomous snake casually dangles from the girl's bedroom nightlight

They're aren't many good places for a venomous snake to pop up, but dangling from above a young child's bed is a particularly bad one.

Yet that's the scenario seasoned reptile handlers Tony Harrison and Brooke Smith found themselves in after being called to remove a brown snake from a property in Beechmont, Australia.

In what is perhaps the understatement of the year, Harrison called the scene a "little disturbing" in the caption of his YouTube clip of the daring snake capture.

Harrison's video also shows the girl's parents, who remained astoundingly chill despite the whole "poisonous, slithering biting machine hanging above our daughter's bed" thing.  Read more...

The Obamas donated their swing set because the Trumps didn't want it

The White House swing set was hauled off the South Lawn Thursday, only a few weeks before Donald Trump moves in.

The play structure was first brought in by the Obamas in 2009 for the president's then 10- and 7-year-old daughters. Almost eight years later, the Obamas are donating the elaborate swings to charity.

Aw, the Obama girls got a swing set.

— Sarah Gerhart (@SGerhart) March 5, 2009

The set was intended for the Obama girls and other children who visited the president. Shortly after it arrived in March 2009, kids from a national charity played on the structure, as seen in a photo essay from the White House.  Read more...

How ground-bound role player Zaza Pachulia upended NBA All-Star voting

Stop us if you've heard this one before: An American election is upended by cyber shenanigans from Eastern Europe, thus propelling an unqualified candidate to the top of the polls.

No, we're not talking about the presidential race. We're talking about Zaza Pachulia, would-be NBA All-Star.

The NBA released initial results Thursday for its All-Star fan vote, which helps determine starting lineups for the league's annual showcase game. Flying give you 'the fear?' Here are the world's safest airlines

Flying is an inevitably stressful affair.

The trip to the airport can be littered with traffic, the lines to check-in annoyingly long, and don't even get us started on anxiety-inducing turbulence.

So we'll take anything that allows us to rest easy, and that comes in the form of flying on airlines renowned for safety.

For the fourth year running, Australian carrier Qantas has been named the safest airline in the world. That's according to travel website AirlineRatings.com, who surveyed 425 airlines for 2017.

Qantas, which has been operating for 96 years, has "a fatality free record in the jet era — an extraordinary record," writes the website's editors. Read more...

Unicorn macarons are a thing now, and Instagrammers are losing it

Eating macrons is not unlike inhaling magical air.

They're melt-in-your-mouth light, like a layer of crystalised fairy dust that also could contribute to a diabetes diagnosis one day.

So it's no great stretch that they'd eventually be hand-painted in the image of the most mystical and not at all made up creature: the mighty unicorn.

Mac Lab Bakery knows all about the magic (and insane hype) conjured when a delicious biscuit-thing and unicorn iconography meet.

Trivial Pursuit may have gone a bit too hard on the 'find and replace' function

Laziness gets the best of us all sometimes, and there's no greater form of modern laziness than smashing that "find and replace" button.

But it can sometimes backfire, as it has reportedly done for the folks behind Hasbro's Trivial Pursuit.

It looks like the decision to find instances of the word "km" and replace them with "kilometres" now means that according to the game, it was the actor Hugh Jackilometresan who starred in Baz Luhrmann's Australia. Poor Hugh Jackman.

Trivial Pursuit makers change all mentions of "km" to "kilometres" as a universal find and change. Can't see what could go wrong therepic.twitter.com/956hYeJw3B

BMW’s HaloActive technology is knock-your-socks-off impressive

LAS VEGAS — Holograms are one of those perennially disappointing technologies that companies trot out every few years with promises to change our lives or somehow live up to our Princess Leia aspirations. They never do and then the holographic technology scurries back into the shadows until someone else builds up enough courage to try disappointing us again.

BMW’s HaloActive interface is not one of those disappointments.

The moss in the back is NOT the best thing about this BMW future interior demo.

The upcoming Mercury will be the last phone designed by BlackBerry

LAS VEGAS — We still don't know much about Mercury, the upcoming BlackBerry handset manufactured by Chinese tech company TCL, but we now know it will be the last handset designed and engineered in-house by BlackBerry.

CEO John Chen confirmed as much Thursday during a press event at CES, reiterating his desire to get BlackBerry out of the handset business.

"The last model we engineered and designed ourself, yes that will be the last one," Chen said of the Mercury, which will be released sometime in 2017.

That may sound like bad news for BlackBerry loyalists but the CEO said the shift will actually enable the company to get more of its handsets on the market via partnerships since it will no longer need to devote its resources to hardware. Read more...

'How I Met Your Mother' writer gives '70s sitcom reboot a personal twist

In her first sit down with Norman Lear, writer Gloria Calderón Kellett remembers feeling trepidation about the concept that the legendary TV producer was pitching her.

It was a reboot of one of his iconic 1970s sitcoms One Day at a Time, but "reimagined" with a Cuban-American family at the core of the show.

"What do you think about doing the show like this?" he asked her.

"Honestly, I’m concerned," was her reply.

"Why?" he asked.

"I [told Norman] my family is really important to me," the How I Met Your Mother writer recalled in an interview with Mashable. "It’s very personal I know so many very talented comedians and friends that are Latino that have sold shows about their family, and it gets messed with in a way that makes it feel no longer theirs." People have figured out how to make naughty art with erasable ink and hairdryers

Fan art hobbyists have found a new way of reimagining their favourite characters, thanks to the magic of heat-activated erasable ink.

Pens such as those from Pilot's popular Frixion line offer users the ability to rub out their mistakes. An acid in the ink is activated by the heat produced from the friction of rubbing, which then dissolves the visible marks from the page.

Naturally, people have figured out some naughty interpretations — such as erasing girls' clothes with hairdryers held over the drawings.

The trend has been popping on Twitter with the hashtag #フリクション脱衣 (furikushon datsui), or "friction undressing." Read more...

YouTuber and creator KHAce had to change some things here and there — and the original's grayscale presentation is replaced by a full-color experience — but the results are surprisingly faithful. Only the original music and sound effects are missing, though the above video splices them in.

You can play all of this yourself for free, provided you own Super Mario Maker. Share codes for every one of KHAce's levels are included in the video description on YouTube. Read more...

Australian cricketer latest to join the on-field 'dabbing' club

Sportsmen are known to bring up milestones in a grand way. But of late, a new trend has befallen them.

Dabbing. That involves people pointing one arm upwards towards the sky while also bowing their head into their other arm.

The latest to join the club is Pakistan-born Australian cricketer Usman Khwaja, who brought up his half-century at the Sydney Cricket Ground in style

Uzzie, as he's popularly known, is not the first sportsman to dab though.

The dance move, which originated in the rap circuit of Atlanta, was popularized on-field by American rugby footballer Cam Newton. A compilation of his dabs can be viewed here. Read more...

London police stop to help 'collapsed person,' get an odd surprise

LONDON — In a job that's probably filled with unpleasant surprises, it must be a nice relief when something that appears to be grim actually turns out to be entirely innocent.

It's happened before with the British police. There was the "person who sounded in distress" and turned out to be a goat and the "injured otter" that was nothing more than a fake fur collar.

And when the Lewisham Central Safer Neighbourhoods Team was out patrolling on Wednesday, it happened again.

"There was an alleyway with a trolley full of goods at the entrance and there was something that looked like a person slumped over so we went to investigate," a spokesperson told the London Evening Standard. Read more...

Slow motion stunts with a 100mph RC car look surprisingly epic

You might not think miniature cars could ever be as impressive as their life-sized counterparts when it comes to stunts, but when you add extreme slow motion into the mix it's a different story.

Just look at the latest video from The Slow Mo Guys — damn thing's like the next Fast and Furious instalment.

In the clip above, Gav and Dan drive a 100mph RC car through flour, through fire, and — for the grand finale — head on into the path another RC car for an explosive collision.

If you added Dwayne Johnson into the mix you'd have a blockbuster.  Read more...

Donald Trump finally got a fact right

Petty Tweeter-In-Chief/President-elect Donald Trump went after the closest thing he has to an equal on Friday, when he mocked former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his low ratings as new host of NBC's The Apprentice.

It's worth noting that Trump would likely have tweeted something about the new Apprentice regardless of ratings, but this time he stumbled upon some precious nuggets of truth. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Monday season premiere of The Apprentice lost nearly half its average viewers (44 percent) compared to 2015. Read more...

Professional Esports Association suspends its 'CS:GO' league

Before the Professional Esports Association even had a chance to get its inaugural Counter-Strike: Global Offensive league off the ground, the organization has hung up its hat on CS:GO.

The majority of CS:GO players who make up the seven teams of the PEA voted earlier this week to compete in ESL Pro League Season 5 rather than the first season of PEA's similar league. That vote prompted the PEA to suspend its plans to operate the league, the PEA announced in an email statement Friday.

The PEA was formed by commissioner Jason Katz and the owners of seven North American Counter-Strike teams — Team Liquid, Cloud9, Team SoloMid, Immortals, NRG Esports, CompLexity Gaming and Counter Logic Gaming. The goal was to have an owner-operated league structured similarly to traditional sports leagues that promised better pay, benefits and communication with players. Read more...

The 5 most excessive tech displays we saw on Day 3 at CES

Day one at CES 2017 had us thinking about how we see the world. Day two was all like, WTF? After day three, we had just one simple question for a few of the presenters: Do you think that might have been a little much?

It's not that excess is always a bad quality. I can think of plenty of things I could never have enough of, like battery life, mobile data or — outside the tech world — breakfast foods. As the old saying goes, you can never have too much of a good thing.

These presenters and products weren't all necessarily bad or even wrong to go over the top — they just did so the most noticeably. Here's the most excessive tech from the third day of CES.   Read more...

'The Young Pope' has awakened something beautiful in the internet

The Young Pope, an HBO show starring Jude Law as a pope who is not old, has — a week before its premiere date — reached the internet's affectionate embrace.

While no one is quite sure what The Young Pope is, like, about yet, the mere concept of a pope who has been alive for fewer years than other popes has ignited the meme-loving spirits of every single person on Twitter.

Somewhere along the line, those memes transformed into song lyrics, because the Young Pope is — in all his pool-playing, shit-talking, not-old splendor — song incarnate. Glory, glory, hallelujah.

An iceberg the size of Scotland is about to break off Antarctica

A partial breakup of the Larsen C ice shelf is imminent, scientists say, resulting in one of the largest icebergs on record—roughly the size of Delaware, or Scotland.

Researchers who closely monitor a crack cutting across the floating Antarctic ice shelf reported on Thursday that its progress had suddenly sped up, indicating that a collapse may be underway. If and when it occurs, it could yield one of the top ten largest icebergs on record, possibly in the top three.

More worrisome is the possibility that the calving event—which refers to the breaking off of the iceberg, from the ice shelf that it's now attached to—could speed up the disintegration of the broader ice shelf and land-based ice that lies behind it. Read more...

The app is poised to continue its explosive growth because it gives the end user something that they didn’t even know they wanted — and now can’t seem to live without.
