On this Friday the 13th, Flight 666 made a safe landing in HEL

Quick poll: would you get on a plane to HEL?

Well, on Jan. 13 (Friday the 13th), a bunch of people did just that, hopping aboard a 1.5-hour long flight from Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH), to Helsinki, Finland (HEL).

Oh, also, the flight number was AY666. Oh, also, the plane was 13 years old.

Everything went great, though! And would you believe that HEL's temperature was only in the low thirties?

Is Apple's App Store a monopoly?

Is Apple's App Store a mall or the equivalent of a sole proprietor shop selling unique wares?

That question appears to be at the heart of a now revived lawsuit against Apple, Pepper et al v. Apple Inc. In it, a group pf plaintiffs claims that Apple's insistence on selling all iPhone apps through the App Store and not allowing developers to sell iOS apps through other channels is anti-competitive and artificially inflating prices.

The lawsuit is almost five years old and, according to sources, was dismissed so early on in the legal process that the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals, which agrees with the plaintiffs, is still a procedural one. It only leaves the door open for the lawsuit to again move forward, without positioning it for a court battle, at least not yet. Read more...

SpaceX is betting big on its (currently non-operational) satellite internet business.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Friday, Elon Musk's private spaceflight company hopes that its planned fleet of 4,425 satellites designed to deliver internet to locations around the world will bring in enough revenue to fund its goal of getting people to Mars

In total, SpaceX is projecting that the internet end of its business will "bring in more than $30 billion in revenue by 2025," the Wall Street Journal said, citing SpaceX documents.

Kevin Hart is about to school you with 'The Black Man's Guide to History'

Kevin Hart is teaming up with History Channel for The Black Man's Guide to History, a look at lesser-known but important black history stories, filtered through the lens of Hart's comedic sensibilities.

The Central Intelligence star will executive produce and star in the two-hour event from HartBeat Productions and Comedy Dynamics.

According to a release, the show begins as Hart finds his daughter upset after watching the film 12 Years A Slave, believing that black history appears to only be about slavery and oppression.

This prompts Hart to begin educating her through scripted re-enactments about fascinating historical figures that people may not have heard about before such as Matthew Henson, the first person to go to the North Pole, but did not receive the credit; Robert Smalls, a former slave who led a revolt on a Confederate warship and pretended to be the captain to evade capture; Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut; and Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who courageously mailed himself to a free state in a box. #TBT: Young Joe Biden was a dapper man indeed

Neon is an experimental web browser that's filled with glorious content bubbles

Opera, which released its first browser in 1995, has quietly been innovating its products over the last two decades with features like built in ad-blocking and VPN. Now, the company has launched Neon, a new concept browser.

"Each Opera Neon feature is an alternate reality for the Opera browser," the company said in a blog post announcing Neon Thursday.

Neon is a fun and fresh take on the browser. It pulls your desktop background as the browser’s home background, making it feel transparent. The first thing you see when you open Neon are floating bubble-like shortcuts to popular websites—a redesign of the speed dial feature from Opera's flagship browser. Other bubbles replace conventional tabs and form a vertical bar on the right of the screen. Read more...

Céline Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On' should play at every basketball game

Anyone who claims he doesn't tear up during the key change on Céline Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" is lying to you, and that is plain fact.

This boot has been recalled after Redditors found swastika prints on the sole

A seemingly innocuous men's boot available from a retailer on Amazon has been recalled after a Redditor discovered it left a tread print that looked a lot like a swastika.

Earlier this week a user on the site posted an image of their newly purchased New Men's Polar Fox Winter Cap Toe Wool Lining Boot. A side-by-side shot showed the print the tread left.

The uploader captioned the photo, which has since had over three million views, "There was an angle I didn't get to see when ordering my new work boots..."

Redditors traced the boot to its Amazon page and started inundating the listing with questions, comments, reviews and posts about the swastika design — as well as some ill-advised puns about Hitler, the Holocaust and Nazis. Read more...

Striking images capture the majestic beauty of seadragons

Researchers in Australia finally caught on camera what they were looking for: a new species of seadragon in its natural habitat.

Footage released this week in Marine Biodiversity Records shows the elusive "Ruby Seadragon" in the waters off Australia's remote west coast.

"I fully expected that we knew all the seadragon species that are out there, but the discovery showed us that we can still find big, charismatic, bright red fish that no one has ever seen before," Josefin Stiller of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, said in the video highlighting the new species. WhatsApp: That 'backdoor' in our encryption is actually a feature

Neither WhatsApp nor The Guardian are having a good day.

The UK-based newspaper published a scathing exclusive report early Friday morning, purporting to reveal disturbing news about the encryption used by WhatsApp's, the Facebook-owned messaging service. Almost as soon as the article went live, however, security experts took to the internet to publicly question the nature of its claims.

According to the article, WhatsApp has a glaring security flaw in the manner its end-to-end encryption is set up, which creates a wide-open backdoor which "allows snooping" by Facebook — and, by extension, government agencies or others who might gain access to it by legitimate or nefarious means. Bull shark steals a fish right off a fisherman's line

"Oh my f*ck."

Fisherman were surprised to see a rogue bull shark doing a little bit of opportunist fishing on the Breede River in Western Cape, South Africa, last month. The men noticed the shark in the water, and sure enough, it snagged a fish right off their line as they reeled it in to the boat.

While bull sharks are commonly seen near the mouth of the river, this video was taken 28 kilometers upstream, so it was quite a shock to see the shark in an area where people typically play in the river.

All the celebrities who'll be performing at the inauguration vs. protesting it in one beautiful graphic

Donald Trump released a brand new list of celebrity performers for his inauguration today and the result is still a little short.

The presidential inaugural committee has struggled to attract celebrities to perform at the event, or at least ones you don't have to Google to find out who they are. Even though Trump has attracted new names to perform, the number pales in comparison to the number of A-list celebrities who'll be protesting him.

On inauguration day, Americans everywhere can greet the leader of the free world by jamming out to 3 Doors Down, a handful of disgruntled Rockettes and Mormons and runner-up reality star Jackie Evancho. Read more...

'Snipperclips' is low-key and one of the most exciting Switch games

Great news, Nintendo Switch fans. We've found the console's first sleeper hit: Snipperclips.

The two-player version of this cooperative puzzle game — there's a four-player mode as well — follows Snip (the red one) and Clip (the yellow one). They look like blobs of color cut out of construction paper, with cheery faces drawn onto each one.

Your goal in a given level varies. In one, you might need to position each character in such a way that their combined, overlapping forms fill in a heart-shaped outline. In another, you might need to put a basketball through a hoop or carry a larger-than-life pencil to an oversized sharpener. Read more...

Security experts mock website of Trump's cyber czar

A good way to tell whether a "cybersecurity expert" truly knows something about cybersecurity is to take a look at their website, assuming they have one.

Does the site look like something coded for a middle school project? If so, you might want to be skeptical.

If, for example, the newly appointed informal cybersecurity advisor to President-elect Donald Trump has a company website that looks like it was built after a handful of coding classes, it makes sense to doubt his expertise.

Folks on the internet immediately denounced the cybersecurity chops of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was announced as an informal cyber advisor to Trump on Thursday. Read more...

Americans still love bringing guns to the airport, and 2016 was a record year

When packing up to get on the plane, you might want to leave that loaded gun at home.

That might sound obvious, but 2016 actually saw the highest number of guns seized at airport security checkpoints — almost 3,400 firearms and 83 percent of them loaded — since the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was founded in 2001, the government agency announced on Thursday.

A total of 3,391 guns were seized at nearly 240 different airports across the country. Last year, TSA agents uncovered over 2,650 guns at security checkpoints. That marks a 28 percent jump from 2015 to 2016, although the agency notes there was also 43 million more passengers in 2016 than the year before. Read more...

When engineers shut down Niagara Falls' water flow and found surprisingly few corpses

For several months in 1969, the torrent of water rushing over American Falls, one of three waterfalls that makes up Niagara Falls, was reduced to little more than a trickle.

American Falls is recognizable for the immense rock pile, or talus, at its base, the result of a series of natural rockslides over the years. In the late 1960s, concerns were growing that further rockslides could erode the falls completely

To study the geological composition of the falls and forestall their potential destruction, a joint American-Canadian commission decided to dewater them for five months. Read more...

SpaceX's Saturday rocket launch is a big freaking deal

It's make or break time for SpaceX.

The Elon Musk-founded spaceflight company is planning to launch a clutch of communications satellites to orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket on Saturday. This is the company's first launch since a Falcon 9 blew up on its pad during what should have been a routine test five months ago.

The September explosion grounded the company's rockets and hit its bottom line, forcing SpaceX's aggressive launch schedule to be pushed back. Musk called the investigation the "most difficult and complex failure" in SpaceX's 14-year history.  Read more...

Barack Obama and Joe Biden get the 'Shawshank' ending they deserve

There's been much speculation about what Barack Obama and Joe Biden will do after leaving office next week.

Obama, for one, has stated that he plans to stay active in politics during Trump's presidency. Biden has reportedly expressed a desire to stay involved in the search for a cancer cure. While neither has stated any plans to move to Zihuatanejo, Mexico and fix up an old boat together with money stolen from a crooked prison warden, this video somehow still feels cathartic and possible.

Get busy living, Joe and Barack.

People are fuming over Donald Trump's comments about John Lewis

If there's one thing Donald Trump has taught us since his presidential campaign began, it's think before you tweet.

On Saturday morning, Trump's latest controversial social media actions came in the form of two tweets targeting Civil Rights icon and U.S. Representative for Georgia John Lewis, claiming the man is "all talk and no action or results."

The lashing out comes in response to Lewis telling NBC News he does not see Trump as "a legitimate president" in a clip released on Friday and that he does not plan to attend Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration. Read more...

When Britain entered World War I in 1914, thousands of women joined the workforce to fill jobs left by men sent overseas.

In addition to taking over as transit workers, police, bank tellers and firefighters, women dominated the manufacturing industry which sprang up to fuel the war effort.

Women filled the floors of factories producing artillery shells, gas masks, tanks, ships, planes, mines and various munitions.

The work was not only strenuous and difficult, it was hazardous. Women in munitions factories had their skin turn yellow from regular exposure to TNT, earning the nickname “canaries.” Hundreds of women died from overexposure to TNT and other deadly chemicals. Read more...

Jennifer Holliday cancels Trump inauguration performance, apologizes to LGBT community

The drama surrounding Donald Trump's inauguration is not letting up.

Things looked as hopeful as possible (relatively speaking) for the president-elect on Friday, after it was announced that country star Toby Keith, rock band 3 Doors Down and singer Jennifer Holliday were set to perform at his Jan. 19 concert.

However, on Saturday morning, after receiving serious backlash — especially from fans in the LGBT community — Holliday announced that she will no longer be participating in the event and released a letter apologizing to those she hurt by accepting the offer.

SpaceX returns to flight in style, launching satellites and landing another rocket

SpaceX is back.

Elon Musk's private space company just successfully launched its Falcon 9 rocket to space following an explosion in Sept. that had halted its launch operations.

The company returned to flight in style, too, by landing its seventh rocket stage back on Earth after delivering a payload to space. The landing was a secondary objective for the mission, but it was gorgeous. The booster landed dead-center on a small remotely-operated barge in the Pacific Ocean.

The first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket gently landed on SpaceX's drone ship less than 10 minutes after it launched 10 communications satellites on their way to orbit for Iridium, another spaceflight company.  Read more...

SpaceX's breathtaking bullseye rocket landing in gifs

Elon Musk's SpaceX just proved that they're still one of the best in the rocket launching game.

On Saturday, after a more than four month hiatus, SpaceX successfully launched its first Falcon 9 rocket since an explosion in September forced them to ground all flights.

Not only did the Falcon 9 successfully deploy 10 Iridium communications satellites to their expected orbits, SpaceX also managed to land the first stage of its booster back on Earth after launch.

Inauguration, and the Women's March, will give Airbnb its biggest-ever weekend in DC

Next weekend, 15,000 visitors are set to stay at Airbnbs in Washington, D.C.

That will be the most guests to use Airbnb in the District since the home-rental company's launch. In a blog post, Airbnb outlined the demand surrounding inauguration weekend.

Much of that demand — although Airbnb didn't say how much — is also for the Women's March on Washington on Jan. 21, the day after inauguration.

"Airbnb guest arrivals for the presidential inauguration were initially projected to reach 10,000 and bring in over $3.5 million in earnings to DC-area hosts," Airbnb's public policy arm, Airbnb Citizen, wrote in a blog post Friday. "Today, more than 15,100 guests arrivals are booked for this three-day period, with 13,000-plus guests booked for the evening of January 20, 2017 — representing the biggest night ever for Airbnb arrivals in the District of Columbia.
