Fans uncover the backstory for the next 'Legend of Zelda'

Using nothing but a brief glimpse at the back of the game's special edition map, a group of hardcore Legend of Zelda fans figured out the backstory of the next anticipated entry in the series, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

YouTuber Zeltik and his fellow code-crackers were able to piece together the backstory of Breath of the Wild after noticing Sheikah (a race of people in Zelda) symbols on the back of the map included in the special edition of the game, which was shown for a moment during Nintendo's Treehouse live stream on Friday. The group translated the Skeikah symbols into Japanese and then into English, which tells the story of Breath of the Wild. Read more...

SpaceX's most recent rocket landing looks so sci-fi in new photos

New photos released by SpaceX Wednesday show just how sci-fi their rocket landings really are.

The back-lit images reveal the first stage of the Elon Musk-founded company's Falcon 9 rocket coming in for a landing on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean on Jan. 14.

The Falcon 9 landing came after it helped launch a clutch of 10 communications satellites to orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Obama offers kind words to the media at the end of eight long years

President Barack Obama took the podium at his final press conference on Wednesday and offered the media some words of encouragement: Don't change and don't back down.

"You're not supposed to be sycophants," Obama said. "You're supposed to be skeptics."

The president's words carry a particular weight just two days before President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to be sworn in. Trump has escalated his rhetoric against the media recently, even going as far as calling CNN "fake news" during a press conference in response to a request from one of CNN's journalists.

The battle between Trump and the media has moved beyond words. The Trump campaign has telegraphed that it may do a way with a variety of the usual arrangements between the White House and journalists, including the future of press conferences and their locationRead more...

Here's how to make Kevin's famous chili from 'The Office'

Anyone who knows The Office knows that Kevin Malone is serious about his chili. The character himself admitted it's probably the thing he does best. So it's an unspeakable tragedy when he spills an entire pot of it on the ground before anyone has a chance to try it.

Lucky for us, YouTuber Andrew Rea has figured out how to make Kevin's famous chili and he is sharing that precious recipe to all of us. He even shows us the best way to eat the chili, which is of course on a piece of carpet.

He says it's enjoying the chili in "the traditional fashion."

Trump's EPA pick spars with Bernie Sanders, doubts human's role in climate change

President-elect Donald Trump's pick to run the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wrongly suggested on Wednesday that scientists still don't know exactly why climate change is happening.

Scott Pruitt, the Republican attorney general of Oklahoma, claimed during his Senate confirmation hearing that climate experts are still debating the extent to which human activity is driving up global temperatures.

In reality, most climate scientists debate the precise impacts human-caused climate change is having, as well as the rate and severity of global warming yet to come — but they don't debate that human activity is the leading cause. Read more...

Cowboys fan gets awful tattoo, jinxes season, still has no ragrets

Dallas Cowboys fan and stand-up comedian Jordan Garnett did what no superstitious sports fan should ever do — get a tattoo prematurely celebrating your team's championship.

As fate would have it, Dallas lost to Green Bay this past weekend, eliminating them from the playoffs and officially making Garnett's tattoo 100 percent inaccurate.

But Garnett has conjured up a great terrible temporary solution.

Critics love M. Night Shyamalan's split-personality movie, apparently?

Here's the most shocking M. Night Shyamalan twist in 18 years: Critics are loving his latest movie, Split.

Not since 1999's The Sixth Sense has one of the polarizing director's films been this much of a hit with reviewers, who currently have Split at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. That's slightly better than After Earth (11%), The Last Airbender (6%), The Happening (18%) and Lady in the Water (24%) — and easily his best rating since Sixth Sense (86%).

His last film, The Visit, eked out a 64% fresh rating, so Split may signal a return to form. Or it could just mean that there are many, many sides to Shyamalan. Read more...

Yes, there's a wage gap for Uber and Lyft drivers based on age, gender and race

Just like the rest of the American workforce, drivers for Uber and Lyft suffer from a wage gap.

The inequity in hourly earnings appears for drivers by gender, race and age, according to a survey from The Rideshare Guy of 1,150 drivers on an email list of 30,000.

We've seen the gig economy wage gap before. A study in 2015 found that older drivers earned about 20 percent less per hour than their younger counterparts. A study in November found that black gig workers on services like TaskRabbit received more negative reviews, and women gig workers were more likely not to be reviewed at all.

During the past few years, Obamacare has been one of the most controversial and talked about policies in the United States.

The anti-trust lawsuit that could shape the future of smartphones

Qualcomm is in trouble.

For most, those words probably mean next to nothing, but if you know much about the technology within your smartphone, it means a great deal. Qualcomm builds many of the key components of the world's smartphones — specifically, the modems and often the processors, too. It's also the dominant vendor in both categories.

To smartphone users, the difference between a phone that uses a chip or modem from Qualcomm and some other brand is often measured in seconds — how long it takes to launch an app or call up a webpage, for instance. To the industry, it's measured in billions of dollars — the reward for making deals to get your technology into the hands of millions of people. And in the future, the difference could play a role in the 5G race.  Read more...

Kate Middleton speaks powerfully about the stigma of mental illness

Although we're making a lot of gains when it comes to the mainstream discussion surrounding mental illness, there's still a long way to go.

Social stigma and common stereotypes are what makes it so important for public figures to speak out about mental health issues — particularly figures with the clout of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

Twitter is p*ssed after guy takes selfie with Nick Cave, but doesn't know who he is

Twitterer and comedian James Malcolm was hit with a particularly bad case of FOMO while waiting for a flight at Wellington airport, recently.

But it was soon to be replaced with mass public shaming, due to his lack of ~serious music~ knowledge.

The 21-year-old noticed that a lot of people around him were taking selfies with a long-haired man sitting at the back. He had no idea the suited gentleman was Australian musician, author, screenwriter and all around living legend, Nick Cave.

He reached out to Twitter for help identifying the mystery man, but initially didn't get much of a response. Read more...

PETA boycotts 'A Dog's Purpose' over video of German Shepherd forced into rushing water

A video that shows a dog being forced into raging waters on a movie set has PETA pretty upset.

TMZ posted the footage just days before the release of the supposedly dog-loving flick A Dog's Purpose

Filmed in Winnipeg, Canada, the scene of a German Shepherd named Hercules being pulled and pushed into a stream of turbulent water is a stark contrast to the film's movie poster showing a grinning Dennis Quaid snuggling up to his furry friend. Forget Facebook, forget Snapchat: Teens are doing it themselves

Poor Facebook: The teens, they're not so into it.

The world's largest social network was "big" and "made sense" circa 2004 or 2005, according to Monkey cofounder Isaiah Turner, but no longer. He and Ben Pasternak, 18 and 17 respectively, have launched a new social network — one they believe the teens will actually want.

Monkey is an iOS app for people who have friends, and then they have "internet friends." It's a way to find more of the latter, the pair say, rather than connecting with people from school or your neighbourhood. Although, like every other app out there, Monkey still wants to mine your phone's contacts. Read more...

Why a former employee thinks Apple is 'boring' under Tim Cook

Being number one isn’t a lot of fun. Just ask Apple, which was just called "boring" by a prominent former employee.

With a market cap of over $639 billion, Apple is the biggest company in the world. It has enviable profits and unit sales (every quarter it manages to sell tens of millions of iPhones, though that number is declining) and is slowly, but smartly, shifting its attention to its highly lucrative services business, which includes the App Store and Apple Pay.

It’s also one of the most heavily scrutinized companies on the planet. Apple cultivates a level of secrecy and loyalty rarely found in business. Which is why when one member of the fold cleaves off and starts talking, people listen. Read more...

But not everyone was convinced and now stand-up comedian Cyril Dabs has come out with an Indian version of Apple's original AirPods ad and it's real AF.

'Split' review: M. Night Shyamalan's new film is a tense, entertaining mess

Los Angeles — James McAvoy must have jumped at the chance to star in Split.

His role, which involves playing a character with disassociate identity disorder (DID) and rapidly switching between different personalities, is surely a dream for any actor, and that's before you even come onto the fact it's a new M. Night Shyamalan movie he's starring in.

And McAvoy, at least, nails it. He breaks out his full actor's arsenal of ticks and affectations, playing some personalities with a twitchy humour and others with a blank creepiness that produces laughs and tension in equal measure. It works.

It's just a shame the film as a whole doesn't. Read more...

Rick Perry regrets calling for abolishment of Energy Department

What do you do if a president-elect asks you to lead a government agency that you famously wanted to abolish?

Well, if you're former Texas governor Rick Perry, you immediately fess up and apologize to the senate at the start of your confirmation hearing.

On Thursday, Perry told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources that — surprise! — he no longer wants to abolish the Energy Department, which is tasked with overseeing the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile and promoting energy research, among other duties.  Read more...

Watch Russell Westbrook commit quite possibly the funniest traveling violation in NBA history

Russell Westbrook is a face-melting meteor streaking across the NBA skies. He eats triple-doubles for breakfast and dunks on defenders for dessert.

Westbrook went for 27 points, 15 rebounds, 13 assists and his usual assortment of did-that-really-just-happen moments in a losing effort Thursday night against the Warriors and former teammate Kevin Durant

But Westbrook's greatest highlight of the night was actually a lowlight. A very, very entertaining lowlight.

Westbrook received an inbounds pass in the third quarter, then began to bring the ball up for the Thunder to set up on offense. That's normal — except Westbrook somehow completely forgot to dribble the ball. The results are these hilarious videos.  Read more...

'Super Mario Run' will be out for Android in March

Now, Android users can complain about the always-online requirement as well.

Super Mario Run, Nintendo's first real foray into mobile gaming, will finally make its way to Android devices in March 2017. This follows the game's Dec. 15, 2016 launch on iOS.

The iOS version of the game was relatively well-received, though it drew criticism for its always-online requirement and minimal amount of no-cost play before a $10 buy-in was required. The Android release — which already has a Google Play store page — appears to be identical. Read more...

Improved Apple Pencil 2 could launch with new iPad Pro

A new, improved version of the Apple Pencil could be introduced alongside a new iPad Pro this year, according to rumblings from Asia's supply chain.

According to the Chinese website Wei Feng, the updated stylus and rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro could be announced as soon as March — just in time for an iPad refresh.

Apple last updated the iPad lineup with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro a year ago. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro has yet to receive any update since it launched in 2015.

While the report doesn't provide any details on what an "Apple Pencil 2" would feature, the Apple blog Letemsvetemapplem, which has leaked Apple parts before, suggests the new stylus could include magnets to connect it to iPads, iPad covers or some kind of Smart Connector support (wireless charging?). Facebook has changed the way we read our private messages. Again.

In the latest update sure to stir up the user base — even if it's just for a little while — the social network appears to have ditched the old layout of its desktop website's inbox, replacing it with Facebook Messenger.

The move to Messenger, first spotted by TechCrunch, brings even greater uniformity to the overall Facebook user experience. Your inbox on Facebook.com is now identical to your inbox on the Facebook mobile app, the Messenger mobile app and the standalone Messenger website, complete with the chat-friendly options that come along with the service, like built-in emoji, sticker and GIF buttons, along with the more specialized commands, like payment and games.  Read more...

Let yourself be soothed by this eyelash clock

Time is a huge cause of our everyday stress. It's always either passing too slowly or too quickly.

In an attempt to make watching the time feel different, Bina Baitel Studio has created the Lash Clock. So named because it looks like a ring of eyelashes, the clock does actually tell time. Gaps in the fringe of hair denote the hour and the minute, and the gaps move ever so slightly as time passes.

According Bina Baitel Studio's website, the Lash Clock "ignores the stressful codes we are used to when facing the passing of time." The website also features the clock with both black and blonde hairs. Read more...

New 'Logan' trailer features Wolverine reading an 'X-Men' comic

Move over, Eleven, there's a new superhuman tween in town. Dafne Keen plays Laura in Logan, and a new trailer lets her loose on a unsuspecting Logan (Hugh Jackman), Charles (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of the world.

"We've got ourselves an X-Men fan," Logan says, brandishing a comic that exists, in this universe, because of the X-Men's adventures. A young mutant herself, Laura's life is a direct product of everything Logan and Charles have worked for — and against.

"She's like you, very much like you," Charles tells Logan — and he doesn't mean infinite regenerative ability; he means pain and anger. The three of them are a motley family but it's clear how important they are to each other as they fight back those who threaten Laura's life. Read more...

Joshua Brown, a Tesla-enthusiast who had once claimed the autopilot tech saved his life, was killed when his Model S drove underneath a white tractor trailer. He was reportedly speeding during the incident.

The crash sparked a NHTSA investigation, along with calls from groups like Consumer Reports demanding that Tesla rename the feature and disable it to avoid future incidents.  Read more...

This man wants to make dating great again for Trump supporters

The aftermath of the U.S. presidential election has already seen familial, marital and even platonic relationships put under strain — and this extends to the realm of online dating.

But, one man thinks he has a solution for the latter. Well, for Trump supporters, at least.

David Goss in February 2016 founded TrumpSingles.com, a dating site reserved exclusively for Trump supporters after he heard story after story about dates that had gone wrong due to political differences.

An end to acrimonious dates?

"One female friend of mine went on a date. She’s a Trump supporter. When the man started talking about Hillary, she told him that she’s a Republican. He looked at her in the face, stared at her for a good few minutes and then got up and stormed out without paying," says Goss, who's also a Trump supporter.  Read more...

Primates are our closest living biological relatives. So perhaps it's time to show a little hospitality and stop destroying their homes.

About 60 percent of the world's monkeys, apes, tarsiers, lemurs and other primates are now threatened with extinction because of widespread agricultural and logging operations that are destroying forest habitats at a rapid clip, scientists found.

Of the world's 504 primate species, roughly 75 percent already have declining populations, according to a study published this week in the journal Science Advances.

Feds sue student loan giant Navient: What borrowers need to know

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is suing Navient Corp., the nation’s largest student loan servicer, accusing it of “systematically and illegally failing borrowers at every stage of repayment,” according to a press release Wednesday. The CFPB is asking Navient to compensate the borrowers the agency says were harmed.

Among other things, the CFPB alleges that since at least January 2010, Navient misallocated payments, steered struggling borrowers toward multiple forbearances instead of income-driven repayment plans, and provided unclear information about how to re-enroll in income-driven repayment plans and how to qualify for a co-signer release. Your real-world purchases will soon determine what ads you see on Snapchat

Snapchat ads are about to get much more personal.

Snap, the company behind the ephemeral image sharing app, will begin letting advertisers use offline sales data like store purchases and loyalty rewards programs to better tailor ads to individual users.

The move follows in the footsteps of bigger rivals like Facebook and Google, which have built behemoth ad businesses around their ability to target with pinpoint precision. Both have agreed to similar partnerships with Oracle Data Cloud.

Snap had previously long resisted these kinds of tactics; CEO Evan Spiegel famously promised to avoid "creepy" tracking and targeting two years ago. Read more...

What does workplace flexibility mean in 2017?

The Office Space-esque version of the nine-to-five is a construct of the past. No longer do cubicle-confined worker bees time their commutes to arrive at 9 a.m. on the dot; even donning a suit and tie in the workplace is becoming more and more passé. And with 2017 looming, top talent is more selective than ever before when it comes to prioritizing workplace flexibility.

This isn’t to say that today’s workforce is lazy, or even that they’re working fewer hours. In fact, a Gallup poll from 2014 found that the average "40-hour" workweek is actually more like 47 hours. Globalization, increased connectivity and the advent of tools like Slack not only keep employees in contact — they keep them on the clock. This is where flexibility comes into play: employees may be more willing to accept the new norm of “work-life integration” if the perks are enticing enough. And more than a couple smart employers are rising to the challenge.   Read more...
