Billie Lourd posts touching Instagram tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
In one tragic week, the world lost two amazing talents — actresses Carrie Fisher, 60, and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, 84. But while fans mourned the loss of the cultural icons, Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, mourned the loss of a mother and a grandmother. On Monday, the 24-year-old Scream Queens actress broke her social media silence to share a heartbreaking tribute to both beloved women and thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. "Receiving all of your prayers and kind words over the past week has given me strength during a time I thought strength could not exist," Lourd wrote alongside an old photograph of her, Fisher and Reynolds. "Shit happens," Mariah Carey said in a tweet after her disastrous New Year's Eve performance, but her team had more to say on the matter. A representative for Carey told Billboard that Dick Clark Productions "set her up to fail," but the production company denies any such actions. BWR-PR's Nicole Perna told Billboard that Carey noticed her earpiece was malfunctioning and was told it would be fixed on stage. “They told her it would be fine once she was on stage,” Perna said. “However, that was not the case...Instead of endeavoring to fix the issue so that Mariah could perform, they went live.” Read more... Nature can often be beautiful one minute, and brutal the next. Especially for this wallaby in Kuranda, Queensland on Sunday. After grazing in a paddock, it found itself being slowly eaten by a 3-metre (9.8 feet) scrub python. It all happened on the property of Bernie Worlsfold, who managed to snap a few photographs and take a video of the encounter. Suffice it to say, it's a sight. "It was right in the middle of the paddock, there it was rolling around this huge wallaby and python," Worlsfold told ABC News. British supermarket Tesco is taking steps to eliminate gender-differentiated pricing on products sold in its stores, by cutting the price of women's standard razors to equal that of similar men's products. After all, men and women both shave, so why should women have to pay more for their razors? Though to some the store's latest step towards gender equality may seem small, a 2016 investigation by The Times found that high street stores in the UK were charging women twice as much as men for items like razors, simply because of their pink coloring. People can't figure out if this hilariously awkward NYE countdown is a setup
Most television broadcasts of New Year's Eve are filled with people hooting and hollering with excitement. But there was no such enthusiasm on Australian music show The Loop, which had the most terribly awkward NYE celebration, possibly ever. It featured an extremely deflated group of so-called "competition winners" who stepped on set to do the most anticlimactic new year's countdown live on air. It's equal parts depressing, cringeworthy and hilarious. The thing is, the internet can't seem to figure out if the countdown was a setup. In July 2016, Yiannopoulos wrote a harshly negative review of Jones's film, Ghostbusters, which awakened fellow Twitter trolls and led to a tirade of racism and harassment towards the actress. It's a 4K Android TV streaming box, with Netflix and SlingTV integration built into the interface (monthly subscriptions are still needed for Netflix and Sling TV service). YouTube also comes preinstalled, and other TV apps can be downloaded from the Google Play marketplace. Read more... LAS VEGAS – Being thin isn’t everything. HP’s convertible Spectre x360 Windows 10 touchscreen laptop was one of the thinnest and lightest ultra-books on the market, but the latest 15.6-inch model is indicative of a pair of fresh laptop trends: more room for power and performance, and brilliant 4K displays. HP unveiled the Spectre as part of its new lineup of portables, all-in-ones and curved systems/displays on Tuesday at CES. Where the last HP Spectre x360 15.6-inch model weighed roughly 4 pounds and was 16 millimeters thick, the newest model weighs 4.4 pounds and is 17.89 millimeters thick. Not huge differences. In fact, you might not even notice them, but HP executives told us that the added chassis space affords room for discrete Nvidia graphics and 23% more battery. Read more... Acer's Predator 21 X is quite possibly one of the most extravagant laptops we've ever seen. From its 17-pound weight, to its curved 21-inch display (a world's first), to its eight heat pipes for cooling, to its two built-in sub-woofers, to its VR-ready graphics, Acer's "mobile" behemoth is everything Apple's new MacBook Pros aren't. The Predator 21 X also comes with a hefty price to match its ridiculous specs: $9,000 to start when it goes on sale in February. When we saw the Predator 21 X in person at IFA in September, we couldn't get over its Decepticon-like design that seems capable of taking a serious beating. Read more... LAS VEGAS — Monitors are passive devices; they connect to a computer and display an image on a screen. But Acer's got something different in mind. The company's new 30-inch gaming monitor, the Acer Predator Z301CT, has built-in eye tracking, effectively turning your monitor into an input device like your mouse and keyboard. The eye-tracking feature offers another way to interact with your gaming environment. Look at the side of the screen and the camera angles rotate. LAS VEGAS — If you want people to fall in love with your curves, you better make them clean. More than a year ago, HP introduced a giant, 34-inch curved-screen all-in-one Windows 10 PC. The "ENVY" was stunning for its audacious design, but also a bit clunky. The screen rested on two large chrome feet and the rather wide 4K display was flanked by a pair of ugly speakers. This year, HP went back to the design drawing board and refashioned the computer into something you might actually envy. The company unveiled the new HP Envy Curved AiO 34 on Tuesday at CES. Google Glass may have crashed and burned — and set face-worn wearables back by a few years — but that doesn't mean the dream of turning into the Borg is dead just yet. The column, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes an anecdote about the first time Hamill and Fisher met, before filming the original Star Wars film, at dinner in London. Finland is offering free money to some citizens as part of an experiment aimed at cutting government red tape, reducing poverty and boosting employment. Starting this Monday, the two-year trial will see 2,000 randomly-picked unemployed citizens receive €560 (£477/$587) each month, with no constraints on how to spend it. The amount, which will be deducted from any benefits the citizens already receive, would keep coming even after citizens find employment. LAS VEGAS — The history of home robotics is littered with the carcasses of unmet promises and potential. It's 2017 and we're still not close to having a Rosie the Robot or C-3PO in our homes. Kuri, the autonomous home robot, might change that. The 14-pound, 20-inch robot from Mayfield Robotics makes its debut this week at CES in Las Vegas. Bitcoin is having a good 2017. The digital currency traded at $1,029 on Tuesday, its first day of trading in the new year. The price was bitcoin's first over $1,000 in three years. The jump in value was attributed to increased demand in China, which is where most bitcoin is traded. Analysts speculated that more people in China were using bitcoin to circumvent the Chinese government's strict regulations on money leaving the country, BBC reported. This is the only superhero parody you'll ever need to watch. Saturday Night Live Korea created a brilliant parody of Marvel's Doctor Strange, ripe with street magic and two incredible hype men. This week, as you dream up ways to improve yourself in 2017, give yourself a pat on the back: You've already made a significant change this year, from deep within your belly. Irish researchers have confirmed that the mesentery — a fold of membrane that connects the intestine to the abdomen — is its own continuous organ, and not a series of fragmented parts like experts had previously thought. The discovery could create a new field of "mesenteric" science and may help doctors better understand and treat abdominal diseases, said Calvin Coffey, a professor of surgery at University of Limerick's Graduate Entry Medical School. Louisville had possession of the ball to open the second half. Walz had his players take the court as if they were trying to score on one basket — but, in fact, Louisville was tricking Duke into defending the basket where it was trying to score. The result? Gun violence in Chicago spreads like an infectious disease — and now, researchers have figured out a way to predict who’s most likely get sick next. With infectious diseases, predictions are fairly simple: The more relationships an individual has with sick people, the more likely he is to be infected. The longer it’s been since exposure, the less likely infection becomes. Now, researchers at Harvard and Yale have adopted that same type of mathematical model to predict potential victims of gun violence in Chicago. In 63 percent of the shootings they studied, they found that social contagion played a key role. Their study was published Tuesday in JAMA Internal Medicine. Read more...
