This phone has a built-in tricorder. Really.

LAS VEGAS — The smartphone is often called the real-world version of the handheld communicators from the original Star Trek, a nod to how prescient the TV series was about personal technology.

Well, another Star Trek gadget is on the verge of becoming common. The tricorder — the device that Spock and Dr. McCoy would use to analyze all kinds of objects and materials on the show — is becoming a real thing. And it's coming to smartphones.

At CES 2017, Consumer Physics showed off the world's first smartphone with a built-in molecular scanner. The scanner itself is actually an even smaller version of the stand-alone handheld scanner, the SCiO, which the company revealed at last year's show (and went on to win a Mashable CES award). Watch the beautiful, horrifying trailer for Hulu's 'Handmaid's Tale'

The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood's iconic 1985 novel, imagines a bleak future ravaged by environmental disasters and plummeting birth rates. The United States has fallen, replaced by the totalitarian Republic of Gilead, where women are treated as property of the state, and the few who remain fertile are forced into sexual servitude in an attempt to repopulate the world.

Hulu has adapted the beloved book into a lavish series starring Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel. Moss' character, Offred, provides our window into this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life. The plot hinges on her attempt to maintain her identity in a world designed to erase it.  Read more...

News broadcast about Alexa ordering a dollhouse makes Alexas order dollhouses

Don't watch the news with your Alexa.

After airing a broadcast about a child ordering a $160 dollhouse through her family's Amazon Echo, the San Diego station CW6 heard from viewers that their Amazon devices had done the same.

The mix-up happened when a TV anchor said, “I love the little girl, saying ‘Alexa ordered me a dollhouse,’" CW6 reported

Alexas around San Diego listened and ordered dollhouses, according to the station.

It's been a busy few weeks for Alexa. The smart assistant recently tried to play porn to a child talking to an Amazon device.

Amazon has emphasized that there are ways to prevent mistakes like these from happening, including turning off the ability to purchase via voice only or requiring a confirmation code.  Read more...

Samsung's Gear smartwatches now work with your iPhone

Better late than never.

As CES 2017 winds down, Samsung is making good on a promise it made at CES 2016: It's releasing an iOS app for its Gear smartwatches so they'll work with the iPhone.

Samsung said almost exactly year ago that it would bring iOS compatibility to its latest smartwatch, the Gear S2, and it's since debuted a newer, thicker model, the Gear S3. Both watches will work with the new app, simply called Gear S.

When it initially announced the move, Samsung said it would happen before the end of 2016. The smartwatch market has cooled since then, however — the market has been in decline for months, with market research firm IDC reporting in October that overall smartwatch sales down by over 50 percent.  Read more...

Here's why you'll be seeing pink 'pussyhats' during the Women's March on Washington

When packing for the Women's March on Washington, don't forget your knitting needles and bright pink yarn. They are, after all, unexpected essentials.

An innovative form of "craftivism" is going viral in the final weeks leading up to the Jan. 21 march in protest of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. The aim? Outfit every single one of the projected 200,000 protesters at the Women's March on Washington in pink "pussyhats."

The Pussyhat Project — a clear reference to Trump's infamous "grab her by the pussy" comment — provides simple patterns to guide march attendees and supporters in knitting, crocheting or sewing bright pink "pussyhats." The result is a simple hat with two peaks on top, resembling cat ears. Read more...

Subscription box was designed for those who can't leave the house due to chronic illness

Living with a chronic illness often means being stuck inside for long periods of time.

Whether a person is healing from medical procedures, living with a suppressed immune system or needs substantial amounts of rest, having a long-lasting illness or condition often requires dedicated self-care — or, simply, cures for boredom.

A subscription box service called Be Brave Box was designed specifically to "brighten the bad days" of those living with chronic illnesses. The boxes, created by 16-year-old Taylor Nadraszky, are filled with items that come in handy when subscribers are too sick or tired to leave the house. Read more...

This restaurant will pay you to eat soup if temperatures fall below zero

Here's some help for getting through the winter.

A Chicago-area cafe, Mather's — More Than a Cafe, is offering a cold-weather deal at its three locations that will have anyone hungry for a bargain checking the weather forecast.

If temperatures dips below zero in Chicago over the next two months, thrifty if not freezing residents can get paid to eat a bowl of split-pea soup. If it's a little higher, they'll only have to hand over some spare change.

Whatever the day's temperature forecast, that's the price for a bowl of soup. On Friday, it was a 14-degree high, so soup was a dime and a few pennies (plus tax). The soups will be offered at the day's high temperature through January and February, which sees an average high of 33 degrees.  Read more...

4 things we learned about Hulu's upcoming 'Handmaid’s Tale'

Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale may have been published more than 30 years ago, but the cast of the upcoming series says the story could not be more relevant in 2017.

The 10-episode series, which debuts on Hulu on April 26, follows people in a dystopia called Gilead — a totalitarian society, once part of the U.S., rooted in twisted religious fundamentalism. A place where a class of women are subjugated and used only for reproduction.

"I think ... whenever people read [the book], people say it's timely," Bruce Miller, the show's executive producer and writer, said at Hulu's Television Critics Association presentation in Los Angeles Saturday.  Read more...

Revealing quotes from HBO's Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds documentary

There's no doubt that Bright Lights — HBO's heartfelt and hilarious documentary on the singular relationship between Debbie Reynolds and her daughter Carrie Fisher — takes on special significance in the wake of the actresses' tragic deaths

The film, directed by Alexis Bloom and Fisher Stevens, premiered last year at Cannes. Many critics noted the bittersweetness of Reynolds' determination to perform as her health declined in their initial reviews at the time, but the thought of losing Fisher seemed unimaginable.

Indeed, much of the film is concerned with Fisher and her brother Todd trying to reconcile themselves with their mother's failing health, with neither of them quite ready to reckon with the possibility of living in a world without her.  Read more...

Everyone thinks this Belle doll looks like Justin Bieber (and they're not wrong)

To the internet's extreme delight, there appears to be a Belle doll out there that's basically Justin Bieber in a yellow dress.

The upcoming live-action version of Beauty and the Beast is due out in March, so as it does, Disney is doubling down on associated merchandise. The film stars Emma Watson as Belle, but she seems to have bitterly offended someone — how else can you explain the doll's giant forehead and remarkable Bieber resemblance?

Found photos capture generations of people posing for portraits on flimsy paper moons

IMAGE: COLLECTION OF ROBERT E. JACKSON

These studio portraits, gathered from various sources by collector Robert E. Jackson, feature one of the most popular props in early 20th-century informal portraiture: the paper moon.

Jackson, who has assembled more than 12,000 pieces of vernacular photo ephemera over two decades, often discovers recurring pattens and motifs among the images, from comical photo-manipulated decapitations to proud displays of vinyl records.

The paper moon was most commonly found in cheap photo studios at fairs and carnivals, offering couples and friends the chance to commemorate their festive time together with a souvenir postcard of their trip to the heavens. Read more...

Study says zombies would wipe out humans in less than 100 days

The zombie apocalypse won't take long.

A new article in a peer-reviewed student journal finds that the zombie hordes would take Earth's population down to a mere 273 survivors in 100 days.

The paper, published in the University of Leicester's Journal of Physics Special Topics, was a fanciful use of the so-called SIR model, which is used in epidemiology to simulate how diseases spread over time. It's not the first time zombies have been used as a public health metaphor. In December 2015, for example, the British medical journal The Lancet published a tongue-in-cheek paper titled "Zombie infections: epidemiology, treatment, and prevention." And a viral blog post from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged zombie-apocalypse preparations as a metaphor for real-life disaster preparedness Read more...

In 1913, suffragists crashed Woodrow Wilson's inauguration to demand the vote

In late 1912, the American movement for women’s suffrage was facing a frustrating lack of progress at the national level

At the annual convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), Alice Paul (who had survived imprisonment and force-feeding while fighting for British women’s suffrage) and Lucy Burns proposed an audacious publicity action: a massive march on Washington to coincide with Woodrow Wilson’s presidential inauguration.

Their proposal was approved, and they set about organizing and fundraising for the march, which was set for March 3, 1913. Read more...

The 5 places that stole my heart in 2016

For a lot of people, 2016 was the kind of year that warranted a lot of getting away. So it’s no surprise that for me, a professional jet-setter, most of the year’s highlights were far away from home. Here are the five places that stole my travel-editing heart over the last 12 months —some classic, some new, but all ones you should consider for yourself, too.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

I’d long overlooked Cabo as a nightlife hub that was way farther from New York than low-slung Tulum. But I’m officially a convert to what’s really one of the great resort destinations on earth, second only to such places as Phuket or the South Pacific. Truth is, Cabo has some of the most compelling farm-to-table projects in Mexico, a ubiquitous knack for fried fish tacos, and—since they were all redone right after Hurricane Odile struck in 2014—one of the highest concentrations of gleaming, new five-star resorts under the sun. Pile on Cabo’s natural splendor (stunning rock formations, cliffside beaches, whale watching, waterfalls, you name it) and its propensity for excellent swim-up bars, and you’ll find a place where it’s hard to complain about anything. 'Constantine' is coming back to TV as an animated CW show

Constantine lives! The DC Comics hero is being resurrected by The CW for a new digital animated series that will debut on CW Seed during the 2017-2018 season, the network announced Sunday at its Television Critics Association press day.

The hero has walked a tumultuous path on the small screen — NBC premiered a short-lived live action series in 2014 which lasted only 13 episodes before being cancelled.

A spirited fan campaign then ensued to try and encourage another network to revive the show, with Warner Bros. TV attempting to shop the series elsewhere. Two years later, that fervor appears to have paid off, albeit in a slightly different form.  Read more...

Martin Shkreli's Twitter account suspended after he posted creepy photo collage

Martin Shkreli is kicking off 2017 with unsurprising flair.

The former pharmaceutical executive and Wu-Tang Clan fanatic's Twitter account was suspended Sunday, just hours after he updated his profile with a creepy photo collage of Teen Vogue editor Lauren Duca.

Shkreli had messaged Duca on Jan. 5 after the magazine editor sparred with Fox New's Tucker Carlson on his show, an exchange that ended with Carlson telling Duca to "stick to the thigh-high boots."

Shkreli — dubbed the "world's most hated man" for his decision to hike up the price of an anti-parasite drug used by HIV patients — invited Duca to join him at President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 21. Read more...
