All your questions answered about Inauguration Day on Twitter

Donald Trump is no stranger to Twitter.

The President-elect joined in March 2009 (according to his Twitter profile) and he, or whoever else controls his account, has sent more than 34,300 tweets over those almost eight years.

But Friday he and his administration will be inheriting a lot more power within the network. No longer will President Barack Obama — the man who oversaw and pushed a rapid embrace of digital media — run the @POTUS account

Beyond inheriting Air Force One, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the codes for roughly 4,500 nuclear weapons, Trump and his administration Friday will be the proud new owners of the @POTUS Twitter account, which currently boasts 13 million followers. Read more...

All-star catcher shares the heartwarming moment he made the Hall of Fame

The National Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday elected a trio of former All Stars including catcher Ivan Rodriguez.

The honor is well-deserved for "Pudge,"  as he's known around baseball, a 14-time All Star, 13-time Gold Glove Award winner and 1999 American League MVP. He's widely regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of all time.

And for as fierce a competitor Pudge was on the field, he shared this lovely moment yesterday, when he got the call officially electing him to the Hall of Fame.  Read more...

The CIA is telling us how the agency uses Americans' data

You can now read about how the CIA uses the data it has gathered on Americans.

The agency on Wednesday published its rules for data collection on American citizens, updating them for the digital age and making them readily available for the first time.

The CIA collects information in huge swaths that are perhaps impossible to comb through. The agency's guidelines lay out plans to ensure that the agency only holds onto U.S. citizen data it believes it needs to keep.

"...specifically designated officials must document the purpose of the collection activity, how the data was acquired, what steps were taken to limit the collection to the smallest subset containing the information necessary to achieve the purpose of the collection, and further determine how sensitive the acquired data is so that appropriate controls regarding access, querying, and retention may be imposed," the guidelines say.  Read more...

Abandoned theme park is Westworld IRL and it's just as disturbing

If you spent a good part of the last months of 2016 diving into the twisted plot of HBO's sci-fi epic Westworld, these wild yet disturbing photographs will take you right back.

But instead of being from the creepy theme park featured in the hit show, the photos show a place that exists in the real world. The location is an old, abandoned theme park just a few hours north of Tokyo, Japan, which has been captured by photographer Lee Chapman.

It opened in the 1970s in modest fashion under the name Kinugawa Family Ranch, but grew to rebrand itself as "Western Village" (remind you of anything?).   Read more...

'Grand Theft Auto' player builds a $1 million car to get justice against trolls

The trouble with online video games is that there's always someone out to ruin other players' fun. One Grand Theft Auto V player found out how to get payback — literally.

After getting fed up with other players blowing up cars in Grand Theft Auto V's online multiplayer mode, Aaron Reynolds documented on Twitter Tuesday an ingenious way to troll his trolls, Kotaku noticed. Reynolds suped up a car enough to value over $1 million...and then insured it. That forced the car-destroying culprits to pay him as high of an insurance premium as possible, hurting their wallets in retaliation.

He named it Operation: One Million Dollar Car (or O1MDC for short). Read more...

Donald Trump's official inauguration cups are essentially red Solo cups

On Friday, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as our 45th president, and he's selling some familiar cups to commemorate the occasion.

On the president-elect's official website, the Trump team is selling a 4-pack of "Official Inauguration 16oz. Cups" that, undeniably, look exactly like red Solo cups with some words on them.

That's right; Trump's inaugural cups look exactly like the plastic chalices filled with filthy water (and inexplicable hair) you used to grab a beer pong ball out of.

"Great for entertaining or sipping your favorite beverage poolside," the site writes of its product. "It’s not a celebration without these exclusive inauguration party cups." Read more...

The media's subtle way of trolling Donald Trump

It's a subtle jab when media outlets choose not-so-flattering shots to run with stories about public figures. For President-elect Donald Trump these images seem to pop up constantly, as something of a dig from the "dishonest" media outlets he continues to insult.

Back in November, Trump even told NBC News enough with the unnecessary double-chin shots. In a Politico story, a source said Trump told NBC News President Deborah Turness that "the network won’t run a nice picture of him, instead choosing 'this picture of me.'" He then made a double-chin face.

Trump knows the media inside and out, and is hyper-focused on his image and brand. His entire campaign seemed to be based off his "Make America Great Again" slogan and those matching red hats. Read more...

RIP, Biden memes: How the VP awakened the internet's most earnest humor

Joe Biden is leaving office, and with him go the Biden memes.

The internet, predictably, is already mourning. Even President Obama acknowledged the end of an era as he presented Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom last week. "This ... gives the internet one last chance to talk about our bromance," he said. (It took that chance, heartily.)

From now till 2020, can we keep Joe Biden memes alive to make me not cry?

It's do or die for Faraday Future

At CES 2017, Faraday Future was one of the biggest draws.

The upstart automaker gave the first buzzy (if not a bit nauseating) presentation of the show when it unveiled the FF 91, complete with a record breaking 0 to 60 mph acceleration down a test track.

It was an exciting moment — up until the event, the public had never seen anything close to a working production vehicle. While the autonomous system hit a few snags during its own demo, this was the first proof the automaker might be able to fulfill its initial promise to challenge Tesla's reign as the preeminent name in the all-electric car space. The number of LGBTQ-certified businesses has tripled in the last five years

The number of businesses identifying themselves as “LGBT-certified” has tripled in the past five years as large companies, including Northrup Grumman Corp. and Major League Baseball, seek more diversity among suppliers.

More than 900 companies are now part of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s program to certify their ownership as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, according to Justin Nelson, president and co-founder of the group, which released the tally Wednesday. That’s up from about 300 in 2012.

There's a serious danger to the soft climate denial pedaled by Trump's cabinet picks

Going into the cabinet hearings for President-elect Donald Trump's nominees, the story was clear: Democrats were going to press his picks for Environmental Protection Agency administrator, secretary of state and energy secretary for past statements revealing their climate-denying views

After all, they were chosen for their positions by a person who has called climate change a "hoax" orchestrated by the Chinese to damage the U.S. economy.

In hearing after hearing, Trump's cabinet nominees slipped through Democrats' grasp by uttering reasonable enough statements that still significantly mischaracterized the state of climate science, which holds that global warming is largely human-caused and is an urgent threat — one that can only be addressed by making drastic cuts to greenhouse gas emissions.  Read more...

The Galaxy S8's digital assistant may be more powerful than we thought

It's looking increasingly likely that Samsung's upcoming AI-powered digital assistant will be more than capable of giving Siri a run for its money.

Samsung's Bixby, the assistant reportedly set to debut with the Galaxy S8, will be able to search for items based on what you point the camera at.

You'll be able to access the feature with a dedicated "Bixby" button on the phone, according to Sam Mobile

You may be wondering why you would need such a feature, but Bixby's image recognition capabilities will reportedly have a few different applications. Trump wants the U.S. to make iPhones, but you shouldn't

At a fancy dinner in 2011, President Barack Obama asked Steve Jobs: What would it take to convince Apple to make the iPhone in the United States?

Jobs' response: Those jobs aren't coming back.

Fast forward six years, and a new president is asking the same question — and possibly finding a different answer.

President-elect Donald Trump reportedly said in an interview with Axis that Apple CEO Tim Cook has "his eyes open" to the possibility of a U.S.-made iPhone, adding that Cook wants to "do something major here."

Trump has referenced a desire to bring iPhone production back to the U.Ssince June 2016, part of his broad stance against companies outsourcing jobs overseas. Since the election, numerous companies have been touting their investments in the U.S. regardless of when those moves were first announced or planned.  Read more...

Uber agrees to pay $20 million to settle claims that it exaggerated driver pay

Uber has agreed to pay $20 million to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit alleging that it exaggerated how much its drivers could earn.

The money will be put towards refunding the affected drivers, though the agency hasn't decided how exactly it will be apportioned. The ride-hailing service is expected to help with the process as part of the penalty.

By settling out of court, Uber notably did not have to admit whether or not it was guilty of the charges.

After six years and 388 episodes, the final edition of West Wing Week went up on YouTube Thursday, and the last installment of our regular insight into life in the White House was a tearjerker.

From fond farewells to staff to poignant addresses to the nation, and of course that intensely emotional moment with Joe Biden, the clip is one final emotional memento of Obama's time in office.

Try not to tear up reading Obama's farewell letter to America

Obama signed out on his last full day in office Thursday with an eloquent thank you to the American public, in a short note whose eloquence contrasted sharply with the rhetoric of his successor.

Pausing to reflect on the people he's met during his eight years in office, Obama insisted in the humble missive that "all that I've learned in my time in office, I've learned from you."

He's seen the "decency, determination, good humor, and kindness" of Americans, he added in the hopeful note, "and in your daily acts of citizenship, I've seen our future unfolding." Read more...

'Overwatch but with Cats' is the only YouTube you need

It's Overwatch, but they're cats.

So instead of offense heroes McCree, Tracer, Sombra, Reaper, Soldier: 76, Genji, and Pharah ... you get Meowcree, Chaser, Clawmbra, Reapurr, Whisker: 76, Kittenji, and Furrah.

And get this: Furrah's ult is a hailstorm of yarn balls. It's adorable.

The animations — which recreate each's hero's actual highlight intros from Overwatch — are the work of Dillon Gu, a former Rooster Teeth animator and owner of the dillongoo YouTube channel. He nailed the kitty-fied heroes so well that "KatsuWatch" picked up a share from the Overwatch Twitter, which is apparently on fire today. Read more...

Hardcore retiree defies knitting group rules by trolling Donald Trump

Who knew the seeds of the revolution would not be sewn in shady, dark backrooms but in a Facebook group called "Addicted To Knitting?"

A tweet from a knitting enthusiast-cum-political rebel named Elsie Hay Cook has gone viral, rallying social media against the "short-fingered vulgarian," Donald Trump.

Cook posted a snarkily worded anti-Trump dig and accompanying found photo to the knitting Facebook group.

The post picked up considerable traction on the site, but things really blew up when Twitter user @Francesca_Crit shared a screenshot.  Read more...

The deplorables have arrived in Washington, but they're not exactly united

When Hillary Clinton said she believes "half of Trump's supporters" can be put into "the basket of deplorables," no one could have predicted the way they would embrace the term.

Clinton prefaced the phrase by saying she was being "grossly generalistic," but Trump fans had all they needed.

"Deplorables" appeared on mugs and T-shirts. It became a marker to point to the elitism of Clinton and a rallying cry for those who would vote for her opponent. They called themselves deplorables, and they were proud of label. And now, with an inaugural ball called the "Deploraball"on Thursday and an event by a similar name set for Friday — the day of Trump's inauguration — the deplorables have made their presence known in the nation's capital.  Read more...

How to lose your verified account: Pretend to be communist Jackie Onassis

Jackie Onassis, the First Lady to U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has been kicking up a bit of a storm on Twitter in the past few months. So much so, that she's had her account suspended, blue tick and all.

All this, despite the fact she passed away back in 1994. Way before the social platform existed.

Apparently, she was sending out some very risque tweets about shooting capitalists and abolishing private property on her verified account.

'Thin doesn't mean unhealthy': Zoo's ridiculous defence of skeletal sun bears

An Indonesian zoo which has come under heavy criticism after videos emerged of its shockingly gaunt sun bears has defended itself, saying that thin animals are not necessarily unhealthy.

Many demanded the closure of the zoo after footage emerged from an animal wildlife group. In the disturbing videos, the starving bears in spartan concrete enclosures were seen begging visitors for fruit and even eating their own faeces.

Yet the Bandung zoo has defended the animals' living conditions.

"Does being thin mean being unhealthy or not having enough food?" said Sudaryo, a spokesman for Yayasan Margasatwa Tamansari, the zoo's operator. Read more...

Here's why those tech billionaires are throwing millions at ethical AI

Worried about a dystopian future in which AI rule the world and humans are enslaved to autonomous technology? You're not alone. So are billionaires (kind of).

First it was the Partnership on AI formed by Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and IBM.

Then came Elon Musk and Peter Thiel's recent investment in $1 billion research body, OpenAI.

Now, a new batch of tech founders are throwing money at ethical artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems (AS). And experts say it couldn't come sooner.

LinkedIn founder, Reid Hoffman, and eBay founder, Pierre Omidyar (through his philanthropic investment fund) donated a combined $20 million to the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund on Jan. 11 — helping ensure the future's more "man and machine, not man versus machine," as IBM CEO Ginny Rometty put it to WSJ Thursday. Oops! You can't 'launder' India's new Rs 500 note

India’s bold move to invalidate much of its cash and issue new bills to fill the void within two weeks may have come at a cost.

Ola thinks it has the perfect trick to compete in Uber's fastest growing market

There's only so much you can differentiate when you are a cab ride hailing company that is competing with Uber. You could possibly ensure better cars, better service and better pricing.

Having tried most of these, with mixed results, India's Uber rival Ola is looking at making cab experience more entertaining for riders, hoping it would make riders hop on to its cabs more often.

In November, the Indian company announced Ola Play, a a connected car entertainment platform, through which it gave the controls of the in-car entertainment system to passengers. Amazon Prime Dash Buttons go virtual

Where Amazon Prime's Dash Buttons are going, they don't need physical buttons.

A year and a half after their introduction, Amazon's one-press product ordering system is entering the next plane of existence. Now, instead of ordering physical buttons for products that affix to walls, washing machines, bathrooms and fridges so you can order necessities like Play-Doh, laundry detergent and condoms on a semi-frequent basis, new Amazon virtual Dash Buttons live in your computer and mobile device.

The company quietly rolled out the new Dash button option on Friday morning.

When Amazon launched Dash buttons in July of 2015, each one cost $4.99. Soon Amazon was reimbursing Prime customers for the cost of the button on first purchases of the Dash-connected product. By last summer, Amazon had dropped the Dash button price to 99 cents and was still giving out a $4.99 credit on first purchases with each Dash button. Now, because the buttons can be digital, they're free and you can use them to just start ordering. You can still order physical Dash buttons. Read more...

God Bless Vic Berger at Super Deluxe.

President-elect Donald Trump held his inaugural concert on Thursday, a star-studded bash with celebrities like 3 Doors Down and professional actor Jon Voight. During the party, musician Lee Greenwood performed his patriotic smash hit, "God Bless The U.S.A" and Trump was feeling it.

The Trump family barely moved at all during the entire bash, but when this song came on Trump belted out the chorus.

The Secret Service agent sitting directly behind Trump was all business though, as he should be. But that didn't stop Vic Berger from Super Deluxe from doing what he does best, and splicing together the short clip with hilarious zooms and cuts. Read more...

With the minutes of his presidency dwindling, 44th President of the United States Barack Obama sent what are likely his final tweets from the @POTUS twitter account on Friday morning, leaving the White House as he entered it: with a message of inspiration and hope.

In the midst of the tweets, he also revealed the website for his Obama Foundation, which will be the focal point of his activities now that he's leaving the White House.

What does Samsung's Galaxy S8 need to make us forget about the Note7?

It's a new year and you know what that means: New phones!

Though not expected for another few months, rumors for Samsung's next flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, have started to leak out, little by little, day by day — to the point where we sort of have a rough idea of what to expect.

On this week's MashTalk, Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal, Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff and I break down the rumors we've been hearing about the S8.

With so many rumors, it's hard to separate the real from the fake. From what we've heard so far, the S8 might come in two models, both with larger curved screens than the S7 and S7 Edge. Read more...

Samsung Note7 fires caused by irregularly sized batteries, report says

With 96% of the discontinued Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphones off the street, we may finally know what caused some to catch fire or explode.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal points to irregularly shaped batteries that led to overheating.

The report comes just hours after Samsung announced that it had identified the cause and would reveal its findings in Seoul, Korea on Monday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET. Samsung, which reportedly concluded its own exhaustive investigation late last month, "will discuss the findings of the investigations and unveil new measures Samsung has implemented in response to the incidents," the company said in a release. Two teens freaked out the internet by 'eating' ramen from a toilet

Ahh, teens. What will they think of next.

18-year-old Taylor O’Dore and 19-year-old Hannah Hepler are best friends from Lynnwood,  Washington. Over the weekend, the pair attended Hepler's sister's 21st birthday party. There, predictably, everyone got very drunk and pretended to eat Ramen out of a toilet bowl.

The birthday party ended up in the hotel they booked for the weekend and everyone was microwaving cups of Ramen noodles with their limited resources. O'Dore told Mashable that, since everyone kept forgetting the cups of noddles around the hotel room, she and Hepler decided to pour the forgotten noddles into the toilet to save time cleaning in the morning. Even Boston’s famous ducklings are wearing p*ssy hats

Pussy hats are the go-to accessory for the many women’s marches planned for this weekend, and now even the famous Make Way For Duckling statues at Boston’s Public Garden are sporting them.

It’s not known who outfitted the statues in their pint-sized protest gear or when it happened. The first record of the Mrs. Mallard and her crew wearing the tiny hats is from Jan. 11. They were spotted again by Instagram Allie Kroner on Thursday morning and have since been celebrated all over the internet.

Twitter has some opinions about Kellyanne Conway's 'revolutionary' inauguration outfit

On a very overwhelming inauguration day, Twitter is abuzz over — you guessed it — a distinct piece of outerwear.

Kellyanne Conway wore a red, white and blue Gucci coat (which can be yours for $3,600, if you're interested) to Friday's inauguration festivities. In a brief interview with NBC, she described the piece as "Trump revolutionary wear."

Turns out, Twitter thinks it's pretty, uh, revolutionary, too.

Man adds himself to annoying 'real people' Chevy commercial

The Chevy "real people, not actors" commercials always seem to find the most optimistic, down-for-anything people to come in and make little comments about their cars.

YouTuber Zebra Corner decided to do a realistic version of one of these Chevy commercials, because people just aren't that chipper all the time. The commercial he chose was one in which the host asked the "real people" to comment on a Chevy car using emoji. That's rightEmoji. Because it's well known in the car industry that the emoji technique sells cars. (No.)

We are glad someone is taking the time to point out how ridiculous these commercials can be. Read more...

Nintendo isn't planning to release any other games for Wii U after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The console-straddling release that will usher in the new — it's a Switch launch game — is also a fond farewell for Nintendo's short-lived Wii successor.

Confirmation of the Zelda release plans came from Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, in an interview with Polygon.

Netflix drops 'House of Cards' teaser and release date moments before Trump's inauguration

Frank Underwood hates to let another politician steal his thunder. In the spirit of its nefarious political antihero, Netflix released a House of Cards Season 5 teaser and official release date just half an hour before Donald Trump's inauguration.

The teaser begins zoomed in on an American flag as a chorus of children (never not creepy) recites the Pledge of Allegiance. As the camera zooms out on a stormy Washington, we see that the flag is flying upside down.

The U.S. flag is not to be flown upside down, except in cases of "dire distress" or danger. Given that the text accompanying the video was "We make the terror," things may be getting pretty dire in this alternate reality of Washington, D.C. Read more...

NBC's 'Powerless' is the superhero comedy you've been waiting for

Gators jumps in boat to remind humans not to mess with it

Watch the U.S. Army show off its 'hoverbike' prototype

Last week, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) took one of its coolest-sounding projects out for a spin to show off for Department of Defense officials. It's the joint tactical aerial resupply vehicle (JTARV), an electric quadcopter drone that researchers have dubbed "the hoverbike."

While the project looks to be little more than a high-powered drone for now, its potential for the future is what so excites researchers and defense officials.

Developed in a joint effort between Army researchers and the Marine Corps, the hoverbike has been in the works since summer 2014. The project also tapped the UK's Malloy Aeronautics and SURVICE to bring the concept to a full-scale prototype.  Read more...

Dad tries very hard to narrate his daughter's makeup tutorial

He tried. He really did.

YouTube user Sophie Alder posted this video of her hilarious dad trying his best to narrate her makeup tutorial. And while he certainly makes a good effort, it's clear he's not quite up to speed on beauty terminology.

A few selections from the official Dad Makeup Dictionary:

  • "Large eyelash of a cow" = fan brush

  • "Sun in a dish" = highlighter

  • "Tangerine" = makeup sponge

  • "Box of chocolates" = eyeshadow palette

  • "Snow" = white eyeshadow

  • "Doo-dik-a-twisters" (sp?) = tweezers

To be fair, the sponge does look like a tangerine. We'll cut this dad some slack.

More than 40 celebrities, including Rashida Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ilana Glazer, are joining host Judah Friedlander for the Inauguration Day counterprogramming to support the ACLU, Planned Parenthood and Earthjustice. Wow, Obama's outgoing letter to Trump speaks volumes

A traditional final act as president is writing a letter to the new guy, congratulating them on their achievement and detailing the responsibilities that will follow.

And though Barack Obama and Donald Trump have had their differences, it didn't stop Obama from breaking that special tradition. The full letter is below. (Or at least what we imagine the letter looks like.) Get the tissues ready.

This is President Trump's first tweet as @POTUS

Drum roll, please.

We've all been waiting for it, for one reason or another. Maybe you're excited, or perhaps you're nervous. You're eager to have @POTUS tweeting at you on a whim, or you're alarmed. Either way you probably wanted to know what Donald Trump would say, the man who has made a nation pay attention to Twitter.

Before Friday, Trump was still, in some sense, just a guy. A loud guy who holds very popular rallies, but still just a guy. Now, though, he's the president of the most powerful country on the planet. Here's what he said in the first tweet from @POTUS: Read more...

Rick Perry was casually blowing bubbles with his gum at the inauguration

Rick Perry, the former Governor of Texas was spotted attempting to blow bubbles with his gum during Rabbi Marvin Hier's reading at President Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday.

From what we can see, Perry seems to be a closed-mouth gum chewer, but he definitely enjoys blowing a bubble or two. The bubble was actually pretty bad. We're going to guess that the gum was old, tasteless and a bit tough. SAD!

Twitter chewed it up.

The internet can't get enough of this insane 'Super Mario Maker' level

An insanely difficult Super Mario Maker level has been making the rounds on the internet, and it's one of the most stressful 60 seconds of Mario imaginable.

The level is called "P is for Pain" and consists of nothing but spike traps, P switches and trampolines carrying P switches. Something that is notably missing from that list: anything solid to stand on.

After the first patch of ground right at the start, Mario has to constantly jump and move to avoid death. P switches only offer a brief moment of respite before they disappear completely, so there is no spot to catch your breath anywhere on this level. On top of that, there are no powerups, so Mario dies in one hit. Read more...

These Michelle Obama memes are the internet's coping mechanism

Though Michelle Obama has kept it cool and professional throughout Friday's inauguration ceremonies, the internet's pretty sure she's actually screaming internally.

While President Donald Trump was sworn in during Friday's inauguration, Obama was on the sidelines saying it all with her pointed looks.

The internet feels you, Michelle.

Expedia trolls Trump inauguration with ad about travel broadening the mind

Expedia launched a brand new TV ad Friday, timed to drop during CNN's coverage of the Trump inauguration, and it has a very different message than the new president's 'America First' rhetoric.

The clip sees a woman travel the world learning about other cultures, helping refugees and fighting for causes she believes in. The theme: Travel broadens the mind and breaks down barriers.

If you look over your neighbor's fence, and go see the world, the voiceover promises, "You'll narrowly influence narrow minds. You'll bridge continents, puncture prejudice ... and look back and see that you've made this world a better place." Read more...

Party planes full of 'nasty women' are heading to DC

The crowds at Trump’s inauguration were sparse, but the planes heading toward our nation's capital are teeming with women who are planning to protest our new President on Saturday.

Massive numbers of people are expected to gather for the Women's March on Washington, but they've started the celebration early on flights chock full of attendees en route.

One Southwest crew lit up their plane cabin in pink. But even plenty of pink pussyhats—the unofficial accessory of the march—were proudly on display on other flights.
